it is once again my oc diego’s birthday so here are some scenes of him and mana kissy
There’s a long scar crossing Mana’s collarbone. When they wear that one boatneck shirt they have, you can see the tip of the scar peek out.
“Oh, that?” Mana rubs at their eyes, waking up from a nap. “I got in in a car accident as a kid. Dunno how it’s stayed so long without fading…” They yawn, stretching their arms above their head.
“Do you have any others?” Zero asks.
“A couple,” Mana mumbles, getting out of bed. The sheets tangle around their legs, and they tug at them futilely. Zero reaches out to free them. The shift of Mana’s shirt reveals more of the scar, as though it’s looking out for attention, and Zero presses his lips to it. Mana laughs, and throws their arms around him.
Mana sighed, a wobbling sound like their unsteadiness reached into their throat. Sniffling, they rubbed at their eyes, still red from crying. Diego didn’t touch them, not yet. It was awful to feel like he couldn’t comfort them, but he didn’t know what would be too much.
“I’m tired,” Mana said at last, in a small, fragile voice. Diego nodded. “I need to…” They gestured vaguely with their hands. “Brush my teeth.” Slowly standing up, they made their way to the bathroom. Diego stared at the spot where they sat on the couch, listening to the sound of running water. It stopped, and he heard Mana’s soft footsteps as they crossed the hall. Their drawer rattled as they opened it, and their clothes rustled as they got changed. Diego finally stood up, and walked over to Mana in their room. Their eyes landed somewhere slightly to the left of his face, maybe on his ear.
“Do… do you want me to stay?” Diego asked carefully. Mana swallowed, their Adam’s apple bobbing.
“...Can you lay with me?” Mana asked, wringing their hands together. Diego nodded quickly, going to the closet for his spare clothes as Mana got into bed. He turned off the lights, and Diego carefully got underneath the covers with them. Mana was staring at the ceiling. “Thank you for being so patient with me,” they said quietly. “It really meant a lot that you were just… there for me.” Lights from cars on the street slid across the ceiling.
“Of course,” Diego said. Mana turned slightly towards Diego. He was starting to see their face in the darkness.
“Can I kiss you goodnight?”
Diego felt his heart beat against the inside of his chest, pressing against his ribcage as if reminding him it was still there. He loved Mana, with everything he had.
“Yeah.”
Mana leaned in, and pressed their lips against his forehead. Their lips were a little wet, and slightly cool against his skin. Diego felt himself holding his breath subconsciously, staying completely still. As Mana pulled back, Diego breathed out slowly.
“I love you,” Mana murmured.
“I love you,” Diego echoed.
“Diegooo…” Mana peeked into the bedroom. “Breakfast is ready!” Diego shifted slightly, eyes still closed. Mana walked over to the bed, and brushed Diego’s bangs out of his face. “Are you still sleeping?” Leaning down, Mana kissed Diego’s forehead. Pulling back, they saw him watching them with one eye, which he quickly shut. Slowly, he smiled, like he was thinking of a sly joke. Mana poked at his cheek. “Come on, I saw that!” Diego mumbled something, rolling onto his side.
It’s hot. Diego’s phone says today’s temperature will be 101°F. He sinks back into the couch, feeling somewhat sleepy in his contentment.
Maybe having fallen asleep for a moment, Diego wakes up when the door unlocks with a click. He hears Mana come in, plastic bags crinkling and rubbing together. His eyes slide open and he takes them in, slipping off their shoes, wearing a green tanktop and white running shorts. They look up at him, mouth half open mid-sigh, and smile.
“I brought snacks,” Mana says, somewhat breathlessly. “And a few drinks?” They shuffle into the kitchen to put everything away, and Diego barely see them over the counter basking in the cold of the open fridge for a few minutes.
Mana never complains about how hot Diego’s apartment is. If they think it would be overwhelming, they don’t come over.
“I’m not gonna complain about something that makes you happy and comfortable,” they once said. “It makes me glad when you can go along with my specific ways of living, you know?”
“Mana,” Diego calls out. They look over, and he beckons them over with one hand. When they get closer, kneeling down to be face-to-face with him, he can see the sweat on their forehead. Gently, he wraps an arm around their shoulders and pulls them in for a kiss.
Mana was handing over a packed lunch to Rei, smiling up at him. Rei noticed Diego first, scowling and half rolling his eyes. Mana noticed his reaction and followed his gaze, then broke into a wide grin.
“Oh! I didn’t know you were working today!” They half jogged up to Diego, taking his hand in theirs. “How are you?” Diego smiled gently back at them, and squeezed their hand.
“I’m good. Are you just dropping by?” Mana nodded.
“I gotta go back soon,” they said, checking their phone for the time. “It was just for my lunch break.”
“Mana,” Rei called for them. “If you’re gonna leave, I have to head back too.”
“Oh, okay!” Mana ran up to Rei and hugged him. “I’ll see you later.” Rei gently ruffled their hair before walking off back to his office.
“Talk to you later, Mana,” Diego said, approaching them. Glancing over, Rei’s back was still facing Diego. “Mana,” Diego whispered, drawing their attention.
“Hmm?” Leaning in, Diego pressed a quick but firm kiss against their lips.
“Text me when you get home,” he said with a wink. Mana blushed a little, eyes darting over to Rei’s still retreating back, and they broke into laughter.
Being part of the extermination division has never been fun and games. Well, except for division game night, but with how competitive some people are, even that’s not fun and games. But the point is that working in the extermination division means fighting monsters, and no one is ever completely unscathed in a fight.
“I know that,” Mana mumbles. “It’s like being a firefighter. But against shadow monsters.” They mutter something to themself maybe not entirely in English as they rummage around in their bag.
“Sure,” Diego agrees.
He had taken painkillers early to make sure they were in effect by the time Mana visited, but his body still feels awkward in bed. His knee is bothering him, like his leg is twisted funny. Looking over, Mana is still digging through their bag, expression increasingly distressed.
“Hey,” Diego calls, reaching out his hand but not quite touching them. “It’s okay. I’ll get better. It’s gonna be okay.”
Mana looks at him. They sigh, and can’t quite say something. Taking his hand in theirs, Mana kisses the back of Diego’s hand, and closes their eyes. Pulling their hand over, Diego kisses theirs in return.
Rui looked up from her phone, tracking Diego coming out of the bathroom and approaching the kitchen. A quick glance, his hands seemed dry. Still, a bold move.
“Mana,” he called, reaching a hand out, gently touching their shoulder.
“Muh.” A warning sound, like the growl of a lion.
Mana was still mixing the batter for the muffins, so Diego wasn’t trespassing onto holy territory yet. Mana could probably make muffins in their sleep. Rui craned her head to see over the kitchen counter. She hoped Mana was putting chocolate chips in them.
Diego reached out, going for the waist. A gentle elbow to his chest. Back off. Mana was not to be confined in the kitchen. Diego looked up, catching Rui’s eye. She slowly shook her head. He gave her a thumbs up.
“I’ll be sitting on the couch,” he said.
Leaning in, he kissed the side of Mana’s face. Not looking away from their batter, Mana tried to kiss him back a little, their lips brushing his skin. Diego made his way to the empty couch, where he kind of draped himself in a position where he could relax and watch Mana. He would learn someday, Rui thought.
“Oh, it’s midnight…” Mana turns their head, looking up at Zero and blinking slowly. “Happy birthday,” they say softly, cuddling closer to Zero. He holds their gaze for a long moment, and they smile. “What is it?”
“Sorry. You’re just… so adorable,” Zero says, and Mana laughs. Zero leans in to kiss them, and Mana wraps their arms around his waist.
“Were you gonna go see your family?”
“This weekend.”
“Mm… what do you wanna do today…?” Zero presses his lips to Mana’s hair, taking in the scent of their shampoo.
“I just want to sleep in with you for now.”
