he associates the nickname with his family, with affection. and typically with outsiders, trespassers? their go-to's is curse-ridden insults hurled at him out of fear or anger or desperation.

'tommy'? that's one of the dearest things he has that's solely his own and can't be taken from him or tarnished. and it does confuse him and make him pause when he hears someone other than his family call him that.
