Mizutani and Shizen

Images ignite dialogues or something like a dance-off. When my supervisor saw my work in progress, it reminded her of a Japanese photographer known for his bird work. I am now a fan. Not so much for the birds' work (though interesting for its Pop style), I'm mostly drawn to Yoshinori Mizutani's Shizen (Nature in Japanese) - his unique language and vision of the natural world. His Sakura series's delicate, colourful hues and textures of the infamous cherry blossom season is a visual meditation. The Voices of Flowers series (images below) is so poetic with its soft natural colours and forms, but we can identify car wheels and posts, which indicates we are not in nature inclusively. He lives in Tokyo but is in constant search of nature, of connecting with the green spaces. This is where I am in my research. I'm seeking where nature seeps into the urban areas.

I am also enjoying one of his most recent HDR_nature series (images below). Since last semester I have also been playing and experimenting with HDR. I worked with a series of still frames of the one image with different exposures but Mizutani generated these surreal HDR images from camera movement and unfocused images.
