Ever since her conversations with Lex and Ainsley, and the lack of V in her veins, Daya had been mulling over her options and what that would mean for her relationship with Jasper. While she had wanted to hold off until after her birthday to have this conversation, she knew she was just stalling for time. So she blurted out that she was going to go back on V once the manufacturing was stable enough to supply the city.

Jasper was taken aback by the words, and he asked why she would do so if the V only made her feel worse? There was definitely also a wounded look in his eyes that Daya read as betrayal.

Daya explained to him that she does not, that she cannot end up like her parents, and she already has a genetic predisposition for addiction. The thought of succumbing to scene addiction and scarring her siblings much how her parents had scarred her when they left, she would never forgive herself for it. She implored him to understand, but it was clear that he didn’t, even though he was trying.

Daya tried to reassure him further with talk of proper dosages and mitigation of side effects, but the damage was done. She knew that this would put a strain on their relationship, had known that since she had made this decision for herself, but Daya was not going to apologize for avoiding addiction. Jasper didn’t understand, and she prayed that he will never have to. That addiction never touched his life in the way it had hers.

Despite the awkwardness and tension that was still encasing the room, Jasper gave more words of reassurance, telling her that he isn’t going anywhere. There was a part of Daya that doubted this, that secretly felt he would leave her because of this, but she was too afraid to voice it.

Instead, Daya asked Jasper to read to her, and he picked up a Tolkien novel and began to read as she slowly drifted off to sleep.

The day is quiet for the most part, as Daya has never made much of a big deal about her birthday. Usually she spends most of her extra money during the holiday season, so there isn’t much leftover. But the kids know, and Daya is sure to let Jasper know, and he insists on at least having a nice dinner and a cake. She doesn’t have the heart to tell him no, and truthfully it feels nice to be doted on.

Jasper makes as authentic of an Italian spread as he can manage, and the family has a hearty meal filled with good food and laughter. After the dishes have been cleared away, Jasper proposes a movie, but Daya has her own little gift first. 

She pulls them to the living room and sits at the piano that Bobbi had gifted to her. Up until this point, no one has heard her actually play, but she sits down and begins to play a medley of the songs that she had put on Jasper’s playlist that she had given him for his birthday. A full circle.

She vamps for a little bit, and jumps from one song to the next, her voice joining the melody and harmonizing. Jasper watches her in absolute awe and interrupts her halfway through the third song with a searing kiss. She breaks away with a giggle and has him sit on the bench next to her while she continues to play for a little while longer. 

Finally, she winds down and they settle for a movie. After the first one, Jakob shepherds the little ones off to bed to give Jasper and Daya some alone time. The couple watches another movie before relocating to their own bedroom for some quiet intimacy. Before she drifts off to sleep, Daya kisses Jasper soundly and tells him that this was the best birthday she’s ever had.

After the events of the previous night, and with Daya using a title with Jasper, the two continued their conversation the following morning. The moment is ruined briefly when Daya pushed things a little too far, sounding far too much like a pornstar for Jasper’s comfort. After some awkwardness, they got back on the right foot. Daya asked Jasper if he wanted to come over for dinner, and he agreed.

They texted on and off throughout the day and Jasper showed up at around 4pm as promised. The twins were ecstatic so see him and he split his attention between entertaining them and helping Daya with the food. When they finally sat down to eat, it was a nice, casual meal, and not wanting to leave just yet, Jasper offered to help clean up.

With two sets of hands, it didn’t take long, and she and Jasper, along with the twins, settled onto the couch to watch a movie. The twins decided on a movie, but within fifteen minutes, they were sprawled out across Daya and fast asleep. Daya whispered to Jasper that she would put him to bed if he wanted to find a movie that wasn’t necessarily kid-friendly. With Jasper’s mind in the gutter, he was unsure whether she meant an R-rated movie or an X-rated movie. When she returned, they started scrolling through the library to find a good movie.

Finally, they settled on Pride and Prejudice, and Daya was enraptured by the movie. She was drawn to the themes of family and love, and duty and expectation. Jasper was drawn to the pining, and the kind of love that was all-consuming in the face of anything else. When the credits started rolling, Daya looked at Jasper with solemn eyes, and she straddled him, just as she had been planning to do at the masquerade the night earlier. Before things grew uncomfortable. She confessed that she was tired of putting her life on hold, and that she hadn’t ever been able to want things, and she wanted to be selfish because she wanted him so badly. 

It only took a moment after they began kissing before Jasper flipped them so she was on her back on the couch. One thing led to another, and his fingers had slipped inside her while she struggled to keep quiet. Once he had coaxed an orgasm out of her, Daya wanted to return the favor with a blowjob. Neither of them lasted long at all. But feeling calm and content, Jasper stayed the night, the two of them curled up on the floor.
