"They're bloodthirsty and deranged."
Vaggie, Hazbin Hotel (Happy Day in Hell)
A Hazbin Hotel based devotional
Vaggie is not speaking about demons. She's singing about angels. And she's not saying this as your average run of the mill demon, who's only encounters with angels are during extermination. She's saying this as an angel who used to live in heaven. An angel who knows and is known by other angels.
I've talked before about the parallels between the angels and the church, and the church has abandoned many Vaggies. It has left many bruised and bleeding, emotionally and physically.
John 13: 34-35 says:
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (NIV [source: Bible Gateway])
These are red letter words. But the church is not known for love. We are certainly not known for loving one another. I am a Christian and I tend to avoid Christian groups and events, because I'm more likely to be in danger there.
We are in fact known so well for our hate, that many would prefer an eternity in hell then one anywhere near us. I can't blame them. So if Jesus' disciples are known for their love, what does that make us? Well 1 John 4: 19-21 doesn't pull any punches.
"We love because he first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister." ( NIV [source: Bible Gateway])
What have we done?
