NO NEW FRIENDS Rafael gets 5 stars for saying exactly ZERO words to me for the duration of this trip. I can't help but notice how nosy so many drivers are. I'm often asked things like, "so where are you headed?" I answer with the physical address thinking maybe there's been a glitch with the GPS. And they respond with, "but like... WHY are you headed to this place? Is it your work?" "Any plans for tonight?" "What do you do?" "Where are you from?" They might as well start asking me about my life insurance policy! (Not that my life is together enough to actually have one of those.) Listen drivers, unless it's organic and/ or reciprocal, let's keep the talking and question asking to a minimum. I'm just trying to get to Lassens to buy more paraben free laundry detergent- IM NOT HERE TO MAKE FRIENDS!

Riding In Cars With Strangers
My name is Hayley Marie Norman and I’m the girl with the hair from that one movie and in that other show. I live in Los Angeles and in March of 2015 I decided to give up my car... in a city that prides itself on needing one. It was a leased Mercedes and my home away from home. My office. My dining table. My own personal karaoke booth. Whether I was popping to the store for a single recycled paper towel roll (oh, the irony), or driving to Santa Monica during rush hour for a Charmin toiler paper audition, it’s engine was never cold for too long. My payments broke down as such:
Monthly payment- $418.12/mo
Car Ins- $171.75/mo
Registration- $392.00/yr
Gas- $200/mo
Parking tickets from being stuck at an audition in West Hollywood after you’ve been waiting for an hour and your meter is up in five minutes but now you’re next (even though you’ve been next for the past 45 minutes) and you had to park 10 blocks away and you don’t want to have to walk that far in the stripper boots and hooker dress you’re wearing cuz you’re auditioning for an episode of Anger Management with Charlie Sheen especially when YOU’RE NEXT- $ to $$$ to $$$$$-&%#@!!!!
Moving violations because you have no choice but to glance at your agent’s text during pilot season while headed to a network test at Disney in Burbank and why do they have so many police there anyway! - $65 to $1,000 (Cuz you missed your court date when your agents couldn’t reschedule your last minute Producer’s session and NOW you have a failure to appear.)
My lease was up and I found my mind constantly wandering to a dream world where I didn’t have to deal with annoyances like parking tickets, moving violations, being slumped over a steering wheel for hours, road rage, or being scared about getting gas alone at night anymore. And so I decided to do the most un-LA thing ever and stop driving. I get it, these aren’t third world problems. I know I’m privileged and have a good life. But hey, it ain’t always easy in the city. Life here can be stressful and claustrophobic and rarely seems to make any sense. If I can eliminate even an ounce of stress, I’ma do it. (Unless it’s stalking the social media profiles of all my exes until the wee hours of the night in which case I will do that regardless of reaching maximum stress levels.)  Uber Pool (the carpool version of UberX), was new and promising and prices were at an all time low. Was I worried about how I would do things like transport groceries? Sure. Get to the valley for my class? Mmhhm. Be sexually assaulted by a creeper of a driver? Absolutely. Everything about it scared me and that’s why I had to do it. I turned in the keys to my car and decided to commit my next year to riding in cars with strangers. In this blog I’ll share stories like the time I was riding back from a same day Jergens audition in Santa Monica (It cost me like $30 to get there and back. I didn’t book it.) and everything was going great until the driver pulled out his laptop, placed it on the dashboard, and started watching a live stream of Sofia Vergara on the Ellen show WHILE STILL DRIVING ME! Or the time I took an Uber to the weed store (cuz hey, a girl's gotta sleep). I'll detail the ever changing features of the various apps and how they work (Lyft is 50% off every Monday in LA right now), get to the nitty gritty of cost efficiency and viability. I’ll share what not having a car has taught me. Now that I have to actually think about how much I want to go somewhere in terms of dollars and cents, will I find that I have more time to do the things I actually want to be doing?
Stay tuned!
