"Dad? Dad, are you home?"
Luke Lane turned to the next page in the paper as he heard his front door knob turn, and his child, Lukas burst through the door. The news was dull as of late, but Luke had his schedule to keep. Each day, he would read the paper, have a cup of coffee, and then meditate until his partner, Alex, came home. Some people thought he was dull and exceedingly boring, especially with the life he'd lived, but Luke cherished the serenity in his life and the peace that came with his schedule. It was always nice when his children dropped by to see him either way, especially Lukas. Lukas' visits had become rarer now that they were raising living teenagers and actually doing their job as required. It was hard to schedule visits when his child was a deity, charged with protecting the living realm.
"Dad! Dad, something crazy is happening! I'm stuck in my second incarnation, and something bad is happening to Izanami, and there's these ghosts that-"
Luke nodded, while still flipping through the paper. Lukas was a lot like their father, Linus, and over the years, Luke had learned to tune out Linus' paranoid, excitable ramblings. The less attention he gave his ex-husband, the more Linus would calm down and be reasonable. As much as he would have loved to raise Lukas from birth, that hadn't been an option, given that Lukas had been created as a fully formed adult deity from a fetus that Linus had never told him about. It was remarkable how similar Lukas and Linus were, despite neither him or Linus knowing that they had a deity child until their deaths. Luke had loved Lukas from the moment they met, and had loved seeing the same brightness in them that shone in Linus, but the Reeves side of the family was often difficult to manage, and Izanami would often trade knowing looks with Luke when chaos developed at the dinner table or the living room, or just about anywhere else in the afterlife. It was fairly common for Lukas to burst into his home, usually accompanied with their half-brother Reese, only to run out again with a bottle of wine from Luke's wine rack and a jumbled goodbye. Lukas was the perfect embodiment of Life: eager, hopeful, and more than a little bit wild and their father loved them for it. Luke had hoped that Lukas would have outgrown the amount of petty theft attributed to them over the centuries, but after nearly losing Lukas like they lost Riley, there was nothing that couldn't be forgiven. Having the twins and finally marrying Izanami after literal millennia of pining had calmed Lukas somewhat, but there was always the unpredictability of Life gleaming in their eye.
"So Reese is going to go look for Adam Darktide for me since it's so hard to find anyone in this damn place and it should be nothing for a reaper to track him down. I've never really dealt with ghosts before, have you? Most of the time, the reapers take care of them before I even know that they're there. Do you really think that the dead could be returning in earnest to the living world? Have you ever seen anything like this before?"
"Hard to say, kiddo. Lots of dead things can infiltrate the living world. Just look at vampires or zombies or even ghosts."
Lukas stopped speaking to glower at their father.
"Dad, you're not even paying attention. I've been talking about ghosts here," they complained. "Tell me one thing I've said since I got here. God, you do this all the time. What's so important that you can only find in a newspaper? Just use your phone, the reapers have a constant news stream about afterlife events that's been around for centuries now. You're living in the past."
"The past is a good place to live," Luke replied casually. "How else would I keep up with your exploits without the newspaper? You seem to be in this a lot these days."
Lukas frowned, but it came across as a pout. Any time they got tired of teens staring at them like they belonged in a museum, all they needed to do was talk to their father and they would instantly feel about twelve years old.
"I'm kind of a god, Dad. People are interested in what I do with my god husband in the realms they live in. I'm kind of a big deal, it's only natural that they write about me."
"And the repeated theft of expensive royal jewelry? That's part of being a deity too?"
"Well, no, but-"
"Sit down and have a coffee with me, kid. We'll talk about what's happening in your life, and you could maybe even ask about mine. It's been too long since you last stopped by."
'Did you want a coffee too? I have the hazelnut blend you liked at Winterfest."
Lukas paused to consider this option.
"No, I don't have time, I think. I'm supposed to meet Izanami at home when he's done talking to Anakin and there's no way those two can make conversation long enough for me to finish a coffee."
Luke poured himself a cup of coffee, but left enough in the pot just in case his child changed their mind.
"How is Izanami? You two are doing okay together?"
Lukas scoffed at the idea that they and Izanami could be anything but perfect for each other. Sure they'd been stupid when they were younger and it took the two of them far too long to find each other again, but going forward, Izanami wouldn't be anywhere but beside Lukas.
"Yeah, I'm not going to burn down the afterlife because he lied to me again, if that's what you're asking," Lukas replied sharply. "We're made for each other. Our love is destined to last for eternity."
Luke took a slow slip of his coffee, giving Lukas a wary look.
"I had a destined love too, you know," he reminded his child. "Your father and I were destined to love each other so that you could be created; you've told me that yourself. I loved that man with every fiber of my being, but relationships take work and patience to maintain, even if they are destined. I don't want you to follow in my footsteps and lose Izanami the way I lost your father. I can see how happy he makes you."
"Dad! Izanami is nothing like Linus! He's kind and sensitive and he'd do anything within his power to make me happy. He would never tell our children that they're abominations that he couldn't even stand to look at. You don't have to worry about him being like Linus. He's a good husband now that he's learned to be more honest about his feelings and what he needs from me. I can't even imagine a better husband than him. He's everything to me."
Luke smiled earnestly. It was a joy to see Lukas so smitten with their husband. They'd spent many unhappy centuries without a genuine love for their partners and it filled Luke's heart with happiness to see his child content and at peace with their life.
"I'm glad to hear that. Were you saying earlier that something was wrong with him?"
Lukas filled their father in on the last few months of insanity, taking care to avoid how miserable they were with being stuck in their second incarnation partly due to the resemblance to him.
"That sounds like quite the predicament," Luke said at last. "Death being ill, you unable to shift incarnations, and ghosts all at once? That's a lot to deal with."
"Does any of it make sense to you?" Lukas asked hopefully. "Do you know how ghosts are escaping the afterlife? Have you heard anything about demonic plans in this realm?"
"No, I stay out of all that nonsense," Luke replied, avoiding direct eye contact with Lukas. "I know what you must think of me because of the past, but Alex and I lead a quiet existence. I've given up on ever recovering your sister, and since Linus disappeared, ninety percent of my problems have disappeared with him. The only thing I can think of regarding you and Izanami is that the Ocean is up to something. Only he would have that power. As Alex has explained to me with complicated research papers, only he has the ability to control deities and demigods. You answer only to him, so it makes sense that he's behind all this."
Lukas stared at the kitchen counter for what felt like an eternity, gathering the courage to ask their next question. It was something they needed to ask, but wasn't sure if they wanted to know.
"Dad? Do you think I'm stuck like this for another reason? Maybe demons again...or someone as powerful as my son? They weren't the Ocean, but they were able to hurt me before and...and I can't lose Izanami or our kids, or even worse, have to leave them when they need me the most. I think I'm stronger now, and I've learned so much in the past few decades about what I can do, but I-I'm afraid."
Luke's heart broke seeing his child suffer in any way. He knew that kid better than Lukas ever thought he did and he could see the panic and desperation in their eyes. He placed his coffee mug on the counter for a moment, staring kindly at his child.
"Lukas, I know you're terrified about losing control over your existence again, but I promise you, nothing like that will happen again. I know you're strong enough now to survive this test, and if you somehow aren't able to on your own, I'll be at your side in a heartbeat. I know this incarnation brings you pain, and truthfully, it does the same for me. I don't know if you're able to remember anything from that day, but I was the one who found you when your son...rendered you comatose. I found you in a pool of your own blood, lying on the floor of your office and I wanted to die myself. After losing you the first time, and then Riley, I wanted nothing more than to die with my children before I had to suffer for eternity without them. You looked so much like me that incarnation, staring at your broken, comatose body was like staring in a mirror back when I was alive during the war. You were my mirror image in a way I'd never wanted you to be. I wanted you to be happy and safe, not trapped in a perpetual cycle of violence and danger. It's okay to be uncomfortable with being forced into reliving your second incarnation and you need to give yourself permission to feel that way. A lot of very bad things happened to you during that part of your life. It's okay to have complicated feelings about being forced to confront the past."
Luke picked up his mug again quickly, before Lukas could respond to his heartfelt statement. He was a Lane after all. His own mother hadn't been emotionally honest with him in centuries, and his twin brother had been a lost cause even when they were alive.
"Thanks, Dad," Lukas murmured quietly, equally uncomfortable about expressing familial feelings.
"Luke? I'm home. Destiny and I have been working on a paper on the theoretical exchange of energy when a soul is reaped by a reaper and the implications of that on field work. It's probably going to take us more than a week just to study our volunteer reapers, so I'll be home late tomorrow and probably the day after."
Luke's partner, Alex Alocasia appeared in the door, waving cheerfully as he entered the house. Both Luke and Lukas looked up excitedly, glad to have a distraction from their talk.
"Alex! I'm so glad you're home! Lukas decided to stop by and they have some questions that you may be able to answer. Theoretical, existential questions that I don't have the training to answer."
"Gladly," Alex replied cheerfully. "It's nice to see you again, Lukas. What are you currently researching? Something related to your master's thesis on the abilities and duties of the Life deity? That was an excellent read."
Lukas blushed at the compliment. They'd written their master's thesis while learning as much as they could about themselves and what their purpose was and their step-mother Destiny had helped edit it for them. Destiny was the wife of Linus, though she had moved on from him after he had disappeared after breaking Lukas' heart. Lukas honestly preferred her over their biological father, enough that they had named their daughter after her. Destiny was the only known child of an angel and had several doctorates in complicated fields, usually studying the inner workings of the universe. She was the one who had introduced Luke to Alex, and the three of them spent a lot of time together. Most days, she and Alex continued to work on their understanding of the universe by writing an endless stream of academic papers.
"Okay, so this is all kind of a lot," Lukas began, pulling Alex to the side of the room. "First of all, I'm stuck looking like this. I can't change out of this incarnation."
Luke was just about to take another sip of his coffee, when there was another knock on the door.
"Who else is going to drop by unannounced?" he wondered aloud as he stood to open the door.
"Dad! Great to see you! How have you been?"
Luke was suddenly swept into a hug from his son Hayden, Lukas' oldest brother. Hayden had been the product of a loveless relationship with a woman named Nicole, designed to hide his feelings for Lukas' father in a world that hadn't always been as accepting of same sex relationships. Obviously, the relationship hadn't lasted long, and Nicole ended up dying in the war that had decimated most of Luke's early life, taking the knowledge of their triplets with her. Luke had discovered that he had two sons and a daughter he'd never known about in the short period after one war had ended and before the next one started.
Lukas had been created without Luke's knowledge in the years before he had discovered Hayden and his siblings, and Lukas had confessed more than once to following Hayden around, especially when he was around their father. It was the nature of Lukas' job to watch the living, but they had had an obsession with following their parents and any of their half-siblings around, dreaming to be included in the family they'd never known. The Ocean had forbid Lukas from interfering with their living relatives while they lived, something that Izanami had confirmed made Lukas more obsessed with shadowing their family and dreaming of being a part of their lives. But it would have been disastrous to reveal themselves back then, just as it was still dangerous for Lukas to do now. The past had been less open minded, and exposing Lukas' star crossed same sex parents would have destroyed their standing in society, cutting them off from the battlefields that needed them. It would have devastated and complicated their parents' relationship with each other as Luke had never known about the pregnancy that the Ocean used to make his child. Lukas belonged with them, but they would always be an outsider in the family by their very nature, which drove an obsession in Lukas with the children Luke was allowed to know about in life.
"Oh, this is a surprise," Luke said, watching to see if Lukas had noticed their half-brother's presence yet. "Your sibling is over here too, speaking with Alex. Please keep things civil. Please, Hayden. Lukas doesn't visit as often as you're able to."
"So do you think you and Destiny will be able to help? Both of you know things I could never know about the universe."
Alex nodded thoughtfully.
"You know, if you read our published papers every year, you might come close to knowing more about the universe," he teased. "I send you a copy every Winterfest. But seriously, we'll do our best. I might have more questions for you later, though, so expect an email or two later on."
Some of the tension released from Lukas' shoulders, and they released a relieved sigh. For the first time, they felt like something tangible was happening to fix this situation. Their stepparents were competent, intelligent researchers, and they'd already discovered so many things about the inner working of the universe over the centuries. With Reese helping track down difficult to find souls and their stepparents researching what could possibly be happening to them, Lukas felt at least somewhat in control of the situation.
Just when they thought they could finally breathe, an all too familiar voice was complaining loudly behind them. Lukas would know that voice anywhere.
"What the hell are you doing here, Hayden?" Lukas demanded, crossing their arms. "Shouldn't you be somewhere where you can pretend that me, Riley, Leander, and Katie Lee don't exist? This is my time with our father. You can come back when I'm gone, since it's not like you have anything important to do here or anything. Some of us are working on things critical to both the living realm and the afterlife."
"I see Dad every Tuesday to catch up because I'm a good son," Hayden sneered. "If you're so important, then go fulfill your godly duties elsewhere. Some of us humans are trying be with their family."
"You're both family!" Luke shouted, giving Alex an exasperated look. "You! Sit at the table! You sit beside him!"
Lukas and Hayden took a seat as commanded but refused to look at each other.
"I didn't do anything wrong," Lukas huffed irritably. "I was here first, getting help to save lives and afterlives."
"Who cares about that? I'm older, and Dad's been a part of my life since my twenties. We have a better relationship because of that, plus I'm not related to Linus, so Dad doesn't have to be reminded of his sociopathic ex whenever he looks at me. You've always been jealous of me because you know it's true. I've seen your little disguises where you dye your hair red and pretend to be me, and it's sad. Don't worry so much about all your daddy issues since he's barely your dad. He's just the sperm donor to the Ocean's most useless deity."
"Hayden! That's enough! I don't want to hear you talking to your sibling like that ever again. Lukas is my child, just as much as you are. I can't believe that two grown adults who are millennia old can act so childishly. Both of you apologize to each other. Now."
Both half-siblings mumbled something under their breath that sounded somewhat like it could have been an apology. This was probably the best result Luke could hope for. He had no idea why his children were so competitive and immature. Lukas' full blooded siblings, Leander and Katie Lee, didn't seem fond of Hayden either, but Luke had never had to physically separate them from their half-brother. Lukas and Hayden were much closer in age and had come of age in a world far more violent than the current one. Luke reasoned that this might be the reason only Lukas and Hayden were so volatile, but over the many centuries, the world changed, while Luke's children did not.
Luke didn't know the solution to this dilemma. He couldn't ask just one of his children to leave while the other stayed, nor could he leave the two of them in the same room in case a brawl started. Both of them would cry favouritism at the sign of any kind of compromise, and the look on Alex's face told volumes about his intended plans for the night that didn't involve separating squabbling adult children.
"That's it. Both of you need to leave before I call your husbands and tell them how childish you're being. You can schedule a lunch date with me sometime this week after you've had a chance to cool down. I love both of you and would live to visit with you together if you could promise me that there'd be peace, but I think we all know how likely that is. Hayden, come back tomorrow and bring Cadence. She hardly comes to visit her grandfather unless it's a holiday, and I know she's spent the past two centuries partying with the reapers at those clubs."
"Tomorrow's fine," Hayden replied, sneering at Lukas. "I'll be sure to bring my daughter, who loves her grandfather dearly. It's too bad that Lukas doesn't have any children here willing to spend time with them. I mean, you have all those bastard reaper kids who despise you that you could ask. Do you even remember any of their names? Though, if you're looking for children who are actually memorable, I suppose you killed him. I don't know, I always thought that Luke Jr was a chip off the old block, just like his father in all the important ways."
Hayden disappeared from his seat with a faint pop. Alex stood with his right hand extended, next to an enraged Lukas who looked ready to tackle Hayden to the ground had their brother remained.
"Neat little trick a reaper taught me, cataloged in 'Reapers and the Manipulation of the spirit.' It certainly comes in handy," Alex said, winking at Luke. "And for my next trick-"
With another pop, Lukas vanished from their seat, startling their father.
"That works on deities too?" Luke asked, astonished.
"Deities are simply piles of energy that burn brighter than us mortals. When everything around you is energy, it's not difficult to manipulate the energy around in ways even gods struggle to fight."
Luke beamed at his partner, thanking the Ocean and anyone else who might have played a part in him meeting this brilliant man.
"Well, the kids are gone for now," he replied, grabbing Alex's hand. "I'm sure at least one of them will be back tomorrow, listing off reasons why they hate each other. Now that we're alone, I can think of a better way to spend our time."
Alex returned Luke's passionate glance with one of his own.
"I couldn't agree more."

SEC Charges Caz L. Craffy - Defrauding Gold Star Families
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c88cb53c5e7276ec7c2024d27dba75b6/d408d8d114f08b01-a8/s540x810/23e9262444baa497ed0572bbb355df5bba864b32.jpg)
SEC Charges Former Army Financial Counselor Caz L. Craffy, Who Defrauded Gold Star Family Members Washington, DC (STL.News) The Securities and Exchange Commission Friday charged former U.S. Army financial counselor Caz L. Craffy for defrauding Gold Star family members and others by engaging in unauthorized tradingâincluding of life insurance and family survivor benefits they received following the death of an active duty service memberâand for recommending excessive trades and higher risk strategies that did not match customersâ investment profiles. According to the SECâs complaint, Craffy of Colts Neck, New Jersey, was permitted to provide general financial education to service membersâ families through his job as a U.S. Army financial counselor. However, as alleged, between May 2018 and November 2022, Craffy used his position and access to manipulate grieving family members by directing them to transfer their benefits into brokerage accounts he managed outside of his official duties with the U.S. Army. Once the funds were deposited, Craffy engaged in unauthorized trading and trading that did not match his customersâ risk profiles and investment objectives and exposed them to higher risks of loss from excessive trading, concentration, and lack of diversification. In that 54-month span, Craffyâs customers incurred more than $1.64 million in commissions and fees, most of which Craffy pocketed, while the accounts he managed suffered approximately $1.79 million in realized losses and faced additional unrealized losses of approximately $1.8 million. In one particularly egregious offense, Craffy misappropriated $50,000 from the IRA account of a minor child whose parent had died on active duty. âRather than help Gold Star families best use their survivor benefits, we allege that Mr. Craffy manipulated them to profit from their grief,â said Gurbir S. Grewal, Director of the SECâs Enforcement Division. âWe owe an incredible debt of gratitude to these families who have sacrificed so much in service to our country. I am grateful to the SEC staff for holding Mr. Craffy accountable for his shameless conduct and delivering some measure of justice to these incredible families.â âAs our complaint alleges, Craffy repeatedly defrauded families whose loved ones gave the ultimate sacrifice to their country,â said Antonia M. Apps, Regional Director of the SECâs New York Regional Office. âIn so doing, he violated not only the antifraud provisions of the federal securities laws but the Commissionâs Regulation Best Interest as well. The SEC will aggressively use all tools at its disposal to pursue and hold accountable bad actors who victimize investors whether in the military or otherwise.â The SECâs complaint, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, charges Craffy with violating the antifraud provisions of the federal securities laws and Regulation Best Interest. The SEC is seeking permanent injunctions, disgorgement of allegedly ill-gotten gains, plus interest and civil penalties. The SEC appreciates the assistance of the U.S. Attorneyâs Office for the District of New Jersey, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the Army Criminal Investigation Division, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, the FBI, and Homeland Security Investigations. The SECâs ongoing investigation is being conducted by Michael Ellis, Bari Nadworny, Roseann Daniello, and Ariel Atlas of the SECâs New York Regional Office under the supervision of Hane L. Kim of the Retail Strategy Task Force and Sheldon Pollock of the New York Regional Office. Alex Lefferts of the Enforcement Divisionâs Office of Investigative and Market Analytics assisted with the investigation. The litigation will be led by Hayden Brockett, Ms. Nadworny, and Ms. Atlas. The SEC's Office of Investor Education and Advocacy has information to help service members and their families make informed saving and investing decisions and avoid common scams. Hayden Fox caught a 7.92-pound fish, the biggest catch of the day for the under 12 age group. Hayden Fox caught a 7.92-pound fish, the biggest catch of the day for the under 12 age group. PINEOLA â On June 18, the pond at the Old Hanes Plant in Pineola drew in a crowd for the High Country Sportsman Coalitionâs annual Kids Fishing Day. This year, 287 children under 16 years of age registered to participate. As always, the event was free, and the sponsors provided bait and fishing poles, according to Steve Hicks of the High Country Sportsman Coalition. At the end of the day, they passed out free poles for the kids to take home. Hicks said he hopes this event encourages children to spend more time outdoors. Debbie and Bobby Blalock from Montezuma heard about the event the night before on Facebook. Theyâve been to one Kids Fishing Day before, they said, and since their 7-year-old granddaughter Lucy was staying with them for the week, they decided to bring her. While Lucy didnât catch any fish in Pineola, she said she caught â15 or soâ fish at the pier one time, and Blalock said she had a great time anyway. Hayden Fox caught the biggest fish for the under 12 age group, and Jaylee Shew caught the biggest fish for the 12 and up age group. Foxâs fish was 7.92 pounds and Shewâs was 4.85 pounds. Both will receive a lifetime fishing license as an award from the High Country Sportsman Coalition. The event always takes place on the third weekend of June, Hicks said. While the event is free, they accept donations, which fund for the next yearâs event. They raffled off several guns, coolers and gift cards as well. The pond is stocked beforehand and the kids are welcome to keep their fish. If they donât want to, however, the organizers make sure to give them to someone who will clean and eat them, Hicks said.

Also in that convo with valerie, she could mention that hayden has been spending a lot of time with that gwen girl and recommends that she hook up with her bc she knows hayden misses tracy and having a close female friend who she falls in love with
okay first of all valerie always low-key hoped that hayden and tracy would get together bc shes always known liam was a punk bitch so when hayden starts hanging out with all the time (whenever hayden was gone for long periods of time chilling with the chimera pack shes like yeah dont worry i was just haning out with tracy) valerie is like ;))) Â
of course all of the sudden tracy suddenly stops showing up (no one tells valerie anything) and valerie gets worried bc she assumes they had a big fight so shes super excited when hayden starts mentioning shes hanging out with this gwen girl (hayden cant exactly explain that its to protect her from ghost riders) bc hayden needs some close female friends!
and valerie is not going to let this friendship fall apart (listen she knows hayden is an independent adult but she makes some questionable decisions⊠cough liam cough) so valerie starts constantly inviting gwen to eat dinner with her and hayden or go shopping with her and hayden or go see a concert with her and hayden and gwen is honestly so confused bc her and hayden arent actually like bffs but she doesnt know that valerie doesnt know that so of course she just thinks i mean i knew hayden had a crush on me but i didnt know she had this massive of a crush on me
and haydens not sure how to fix this without explaining the supernatural to valerie or telling gwen that her sister is probably trying to set them up (valerie= not as subtle as she thinks she is) and she knows gwen already thinks she has a crush on her and shes trying to convince gwen she doesnt and that really wouldnt help her case
and everything is getting awkward and hayden cant deal with valeries lack of subtly anymore (hey gwen what sports do you play did you know that hayden was voted mvp of her soccer team yeah shes got some moves have you seen her muscles) and so when valerie is like we should go up to our aunts lakehouse for the weekend and invite gwen hayden panics is like um we totally shouldnt bc actually gwen and i are dating surprise so i dont want you to third wheel all weekend bc hayden figures that will make valerie stop + she can just pull a yeah i want to hang out with gwen alone and valerie will totally accept that
and as long as valerie and gwen dont interact hayden can totally keep this up and not tell gwen
except for a couple weeks later hayden happens to be hanging out with liam and gwen in the mall and by the worst stroke of luck ever they run into valerie who whispers to hayden thats its nice shes still hanging with liam after their break up (bc of course she doesnt know liam has super hearing)
and liam cant help be like wait what we broke up?
and valerie is like wait what hayden how could you not tell him youre with gwen
and gwen is like wow hayden you didnt tell me we were dating but really at this point shes not even surprised
and hayden is like oh shit
at this point i dont even remember what the orginal ask was anymore but *slams fist on table* give me gwendyn fake dating au

Arkhelios Adventures
"Welcome to the Academy, young apprentice. All of your belongings have been placed in the dorm, where you can move in when you're ready. Do you have any questions?"
Ewan Maricourt beamed with pride when introducing his school to a promising new apprentice. Pleasantview had a strong generation of magic users at present, and Ewan couldn't be prouder of them. As much as he was wary about his son's demon boyfriend and affinity for blood magic, Theo was talented and he brought out the best in his son's spells. Adam producing the Maricourt wand at his age was a point of pride that Ewan made sure to mention at length to the other parents of students. Remy was also doing well, even if she wasn't as engaged with the subject matter as her brother. Elowen also stood out in class. As much as Ewan was relieved to be divorced from her, Edana raised her children to be exceptional magic users.
"No, I think I'm good," the student said, appearing to look at the school with what could only be described as apathy. "Once you've seen one school, you've seen them all."
"Attention, students! We've got a new student joining us today. Please welcome to the Academy, Hayden Hanes. They scored extremely high on our entrance exam and will be an excellent candidate to join the Pleasantview coven upon graduation. Please make them feel welcome."
Ewan left the students together to introduce themselves and retreated to the staff quarters to collect his thoughts. No one had ever looked upon his academy with apathy. No one. Not even when he was a student himself. Hayden's exam score was the only reason that they'd been admitted mid semester. It wasn't uncommon, Adam's boyfriend had had a similar entrance to the school, but Hayden's lack of academic knowledge was still baffling. Theo had had to be introduced to basic magical theory and academic structure when he joined at age six. Hayden was sixteen and had about the same level of academic experience. They knew very little about how to set up a cauldron for potions, but their potion work was exceptional. Their abilities rivaled Ewan's himself, which was incredible for a teenager.
"Hi, I'm looking forward to working with all of you," Hayden said with confidence. "I've heard a lot about some of you. Some of you even practice old, extinct magic from what I hear. It's rare to meet someone else who can perform blood magic."
"Of course they're only interested in Theo," Lexy sighed. "Every single person who walks through the door only wants to talk about Theo and blood magic. He's turning our school into a side show."
"I did some blood magic too," Adam insisted, missing Lexy's point. "And Hayden can too, apparently. Maybe the one holding the school back is jealous people like you."
Remy tried to listen to her twin, but she was distracted. Adam had finally decided to raise his voice since reading their parents the riot act at the Maricourt meeting and now he couldn't be stopped. It was always "Theo this" and "Theo that" and "isn't Theo great?" It was enough to make a sister want to vomit. Adam was insufferable and Theo only made things worse.
But this new kid had potential. Maybe Remy could get on Hayden's good side and have them tutor her so she could finally make Adam shut up about her skills. Hayden was also easy on the eyes. She wasn't about to cheat on Malika, but a girl could still appreciate beauty when she saw it.
"Thanks for coming, Edana. I need your opinion on something."
Edana Darktide-Traver glared at her ex-husband, but couldn't deny being curious as to what could possibly need her input. Since the meeting, things had been frosty between the ex spouses. Adam's outburst had divided the two, as most of his blame had rested on his mother, while Ewan seemed to get a pass despite sharing her opinions on Theo.
"It must be something important for you to call," she said. "Do you have another bastard kid that you found out about?"
"No, it's this new student," Ewan replied, ignoring Edana's comment. "There's something off about them and I just can't figure it out. Everything about them is weird and I can't put why finger on why exactly."
"A new student? So what? Expell them if you don't feel right about it. This isn't my problem."
Edana turned to leave, but her ex-husband reached out for her before she could exit the strange conversation.
"No, I mean it, Edana. I-I need your thoughts on the matter. You've always had a gift for seeing the intentions of others. If there's something dangerous about this student, I know that you can feel it."
"Oh? I wasn't able to see your intention to throw me under the bus with the kids. We both went to that meeting and Adam's only angry at one of us."
"You got carried away by yourself," Ewan snapped, crossing his arms. "It's not my fault that you were so hard on Adam."
"You were just as hard on him! You know what? Figure out this mystery on your own, Ewan. I'm done with this. We're not married anymore, and I'm not in your coven. I'm done with you."
"Edana, wait! I'm not wrong about this kid, I know it! I-Remy has a crush on this kid! It was clear as day from the moment they locked eyes. We need to get ahead of this for our daughter's sake."
Edana's eyes narrowed dangerously. He didn't seem like he was lying, but this too could be a trick. Ewan wasn't above lying to get what he wanted and he knew that she would do anything for her children. However, it would be just like Remy to rush into something with someone completely inappropriate; Watcher only knew that Adam was doing the exact same thing.
"Fine," she conceded, grinding her teeth to keep from hexing her ex. "What else is weird about this kid?"
"They can execute dangerously powerful magic, but they don't have a clue about the correct stances or potion etiquette. They were bored looking at the school for the first time and said they'd seen several other impressive magical schools."
"So? The whole world doesn't revolve around Pleasantview, you know. There are other schools."
"Name three," Ewan replied skeptically. "No, that's too hard. Name one. There hasn't been a school to rival ours in centuries. Centuries. It's weird."
Edana frowned, but refused to indulge her ex.
"You're thinking about time, aren't you? That demonic bitch and her inept warlock got to you with stories of time travel and alternate universes? Well, they're wrong. Time doesn't work that way. This kid isn't a time traveller or whatever else you think. They're unimpressed with your school because it's tired and dated, not because they've walked the halls of ancient schools of magic."
"They have no guardian," Ewan insisted. "Their emergency contact can't be reached. I'm not even sure that they paid their tuition fees, but the office insists their story is true."
"So this sixteen year old is mind controlling your staff? Can you even hear yourself? Give me something tangible to work with instead of your guesses."
"Just...just keep an eye on them," Ewan said at last. "I can't prove it, but I know we need to look into this kid more. Call it a hunch. Please?"
"For Remy's sake, I'll try," Edana sighed. "I don't want her to stumble because of your poor parenting."
"Hayden" made sure to memorize every picture on the walls as they made their way toward the dining hall. Many of them were familiar.
I met him more than once. I went to her father's funeral. That guy was such a pain in the ass, the stories don't do him justice.
"Okay, warlocks. How do warlocks act? They're all about the wands and crystals- no that's just that specific coven. Think. You can do this. How many warlocks have you watched? Tons. Just wave your wand around and act pretentious, it's only for a little while."
Hayden pressed their palms against the wood table, drawing their focus to the mission at hand. Just laying their hands on the once living wood of the table, they could feel the remnants of what had once been. This had once been a mighty tree until it had been ripped from its roots and hacked apart to serve the dominant species of the planet. The tree still remembered the nest of birds that returned year after year to shelter in it. It remembered the way that sunlight felt against its bark, the way squirrel nails dug into its bark as they fought in the branches. It was a carcass now, empty of life, the cold darkness of death filling its every atom.
I could change this. It's too easy, really. Would it look like magic to the witches? It's not a bad idea to get some practice in.
Under their fingertips, the wood of the table began to awaken. Death had held it for centuries, but a faint ripple of energy pooled beneath their hands, echoing the faint memory of life and the ebb and flow of the ocean's waves.
"What are you up to? Can I join? You look lonely."
Remy blinked, trying to formulate a response to this reply.
Lukas snapped to attention, embarrassed to have been caught off guard. They had a purpose here and the intoxicating memory of sunlight and waves had left them vulnerable. They were trying to pass as a warlock, while trying to dispel Death's power simply because they were nervous. Of course warlocks didn't have the ability to regenerate life in the way they did. This young witch had interrupted them before they blew their own cover, inadvertently helping their mission.
"I was just thinking," they replied smoothly. "Thinking about the universe and the magic that governs it. Do you know how many generations of witches and warlocks came before us? You can feel their energy in the air around us, even if their names have faded into history. They're never fully gone from this world. Death thinks he's claimed them for himself, but the remains of their lives echo forever around us."
"Yeah. That's for sure. My dad may have written a paper on that, I'm pretty sure," she lied, watching the being beside her react to her reaction. "Do you want to talk about it over some coffee?"
"What is she doing? She can't possibly be flirting with the weird new kid. Isn't she dating your aunt or whoever?"
Adam watched as his sister continued to edge closer to the mysterious teen.
"They're practically running away from her, I think we're safe," Theo noted. "Do you get a weird vibe from that kid too? There's something not right about them."
"Yeah. Maybe they're some rare kind of demon. They looked like they were staring at you in class this morning, maybe the sovereign sent them to report on you. I know I've heard that name before, I just don't remember from where. Have you heard of a Hayden Hanes before? Maybe they're distantly related and famous or something."
"I've never heard of it before," Theo replied. "It sounds fake."
"I'm kind of seeing someone actually," Lukas replied truthfully. Their relationship with Death had started the instant they came into existence and would endure even when the sun burned itself out. Humans could never measure up to a deity who returned their intense romantic feelings and had known them for millennia. Death was everything to Lukas and that would never change. He had even given his weary consent to this plan as long as no one mysteriously vanished and Lukas never embarrassed their teenage children with this scheme. Seeing as their twins attended another school entirely, Lukas was confident that they would never suspect their parent was wandering around Pleasantview disguised as a teenager.
"Oh yeah, me too," Remy said quickly. "Me and Malika have been dating for a while now. My parents hate it, so naturally I'm probably going to marry her someday. Unless I can find someone they hate even more."
She chuckled nervously as her brain tried desperately to think of something cool to say to salvage this conversation. Nothing came to her.
"Hey Theo. Hey Adam."
Travis Maricourt walked by Theo and his boyfriend, interrupting their view of Remy and her poor decisions.
"Oh! Travis! I need to talk to you! How did you do on the deadly curses exam?"
Theo scurried down the hall after the teen, dragging Adam with him.
"So where are you from?" Remy asked, clearly not taking the hint that Lukas wanted some privacy to practice their disguise.
Lukas paused, thinking of how best to answer that question. It was a fairly innocent one that they needed to have a consistent answer for.
"My dad's side of the family is from Pleasantview," they said truthfully. "Are there still Brokes around? It's been a long time, they may have all died or moved away by now."
"I don't think so," Remy replied. "I've never heard of any at least. Are they magic users? Maybe they moved to a different country's coven. You could always check the records. Maybe you have a cousin or an aunt or something that your dad doesn't know about."
"Hmm. I think it's been a little too long. My grandmother's name was Brandi. She went missing long before I arrived in the world and it devastated my dad. I don't think he'd appreciate me tracking his relatives down."
And it would be thousands of years too late. My father died eons ago along with any remainder of the Brokes.
"Are you really close to your dad?" Remy asked. "You must miss your parents. Boarding school is hard on everyone. I know Theo's parents really struggle with it and so does he, even if he won't admit it. It's okay to miss your parents. Unfortunately for me, my dad works here along with my half-sister, so I see them all the time."
Lukas paused, tracing a pattern on the table with their finger.
"No, I don't speak to my dad," they answered. "We had a falling out a long time ago and he said some horrible things. I'm close with my other father though. It doesn't matter. I have my own family now."
Remy gave them a strange look, and Lukas kicked themselves for nearly blowing their cover once again.
"I mean, I have a found family," they corrected. "My...boyfriend and friends."
Certainly not my husband and three kids. Nope, no one needs to know about them. Or my two ex-wives and kids with them.
"Travis, can I borrow your notes for the test on Friday?" Theo asked frantically. "Adam and I skipped class to, uh, study for another test."
Lukas' attention snapped from Remy and zeroed in on Theo's conversation. Here was the reason for this disguise in the first place. What was the little demon up to? What business did he have with the adopted son of a reaper and the biological son of the very witch who tried to destroy the Grim Reaper? It was suspicious and Lukas vowed to keep an eye on any further interactions between the two.
"Hayden?"
"Sorry," Lukas apologized. "I got distracted. You were saying?"
"Come hang out with me and Malika this weekend," Remy repeated. "You can bring your boyfriend and we could double date. There's a new horror movie coming out that we could see."
"Why not make it a triple date?" Lukas pressed. "Bring your brother and Theo too. The more the merrier, you know?"
"You mean hang out with my brother? I guess," Remy replied. "Theo and Malika don't always get along, but you're new here so I think they can share a movie theater for your sake."
"Awesome. It's a date then."
