silt verses blah blah chitchat
i just finished chapter 5 and am really enjoying myself so far. something i find especially amusing is the way Hayward sounds like he exists in a different genre from all the other characters.
like, Carpenter and Faulkner are in Eldritch As I Lay Dying and Hayward is in the english dub of the Death Note anime? does that make sense?
i think it's weirdly fitting for Hawyard's character. That incongruity (?) works.

When Doug Hawyard was the master of Mount Street all sorts would come and go (with an unscheduled fittings for a suit or coat that wasn’t at all planned often part of the visit). I was in good company at 34 Montagu Square, which is where I have been based, when the broadcaster and Beatles guru, @geofflloyd (@siriusxm, @bbcradio4, @bbc6music...) dropped by last year with Martin Freeman to record an interview that would feature in one of Geoff’s Podcasts. Martin is also steeped in Beatlemania so was naturally more than happy for this to be recorded at a place which, as previously shared, various members of the band, including Sir Paul McCartney, called home at one time or another. When I joined Martin and Geoff, for whom I made a wedding suit, to chat they wanted to know everything about the suits, jackets, trousers, and waistcoats I have made over the years for Sir Paul, who, even after a Christmas, will not be much different in size to what he was back in the day. For all Martin’s wealth of knowledge much of what we covered was fresh ground for him. As for a new suit or coat he might have inadvertently ordered in a way that was commonplace at Doug's, rather like a gentleman's barber, tailors know when you have been “unfaithful”. Consequently, Martin did not stray. At the same time, for all the closeness that there is between a client and his or her tailor, the relationship isn’t like marriage. Maybe next time we can persuade him to join Geoff and be a bit promiscuous. Especially if he needs something for the office.
Thanks to a superbusy @colourfulwatson for pointing me to this one. 😘

I just finished the latest WandaVison episode and hooo boy, do I have thoughts
FIRST OF ALL, why the hell did Agatha betray her coven? Gimme the deets on that
I assume that brooch Agatha’s mom was wearing gives the wearer ultimate power of the magic in the coven as well as immortality
I frigging love how Agatha actually takes a shot at Wanda switching back and forth between different accents. If that’s not a fourth wall break I dunno what is
Okay...necromancy spell....so does that mean X Men Quicksilver was already dead?
AGATHA YOU STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM BILLY AND TOMMY
Wanda and Pietro’s parents look so much like them; and lil Wanda and Pietro look so adorable
HOLY FRICK, WANDA USED TO WATCH SITCOMS AS A KID AND THAT’S HOW SHE AND HER FAMILY LEARNED ENGLISH THAT EXPLAINS SO MUCH
THE! FRIGGING! BOMB! I KNEW IT! I KNEW THEY WERE GONNA SHOW THE BOMB “At the end of the episode, it turns out to all be a bad dream” rip my damn heart out, why don’t you?
So the bomb didn’t go off...because of Wanda?
IT’S HER IT’S HER IT’S HER SHE SAW THE OG SCARLET WITCH WHEN SHE TOUCHED THE MIND STONE!!! DID THANOS KNOW ABOUT THIS? DID LOKI KNOW? HAS A PREVIOUS SCARLET WITCH USED THE MIND STONE BEFORE AND THAT’S WHY WANDA’S CONNECTED TO IT?
How did the mind stone cut out the cameras?
How does Agatha know what an infinity stone is??? Did she research this?
I’m sorry, the Mind Stone amplified what was already there???
Awww, awkward Vision being awkward and adorable and crushing on Wanda
"What is grief, if not love persevering?" again, who said you could rip my heart out?
Serious props to the script writers of this show, the dialogue is so well written, it shines so well in this episode. And props to Elizabeth Olsen’s acting, she’s able to convey so much just from her expressions alone and it makes Wanda feel so much more real.
I wonder if for a split second Wanda thought about using her powers to threaten the guy and that’s why she looked at her hands and smirked
Holy smokes, the look Wanda gives the security camera when she’s at the front desk
Wanda you poor baby you didn’t even get to bury him
“I’m his next of kin” Oh frick she’s right that didn’t even occur to me
Okay, I know Vision is a robot and not actually human but that scene where they’re working on him is still VERY disturbing and creepy. I really felt Wanda’s pain
Also the fact that she didn’t even recognize his body at first
“He’s not yours” FUCK YOU HAYWARD YES HE IS
“I can’t feel you”.......remembers “I just feel you” in Infinity War, the second to last thing he ever said to her
Oh my god....I....they were gonna settle down and move to Westview....
SHE DID THE GODDAMN DROP TO HER KNEES THING LIKE SHE DID WHEN SHE REALIZED PIETRO WAS DEAD
So her grief over losing the life she never got to have with Vision and desire to live that out literally created the whole show....my God, how powerful IS she?
Wait wait wait wait wait hold the fothermucking phone....did she make an illusion of Vision? Did she manage to ressurect him? Whatever she did, she clearly sure as hell didn’t steal his body which either means someone else did and Wanda’s the suspect or (more likely) Hayward’s got beef with Wanda and is lying to take her out...
AGATHA I TOLD YOU TO STAY AWAY FROM THE KIDS
The way Wanda tries to reassure her sons it’s gonna be okay...she’s such a good mom
“You have no idea how dangerous you are.” Huh? “You’re supposed to be a myth, a being capable of spontaneous creation” Say what now?
“This is Chaos Magic, Wanda. And that makes you...the Scarlet Witch” HOOOOOOOOLLLLYYYYYYY SHIIIIIIIIIT

It's very simple. Do i think Hawyard, Mason, Daggler, Mercer, Gage, and Shrue deserve the political power to enact self-serving violence that their communities have granted them to enforce social controls? Absolutely not. Would i be comfortable having them as in-laws, regulars at my favorite bar, or members of my intramural softball team? God no. Do i enjoy their vibes, the comedy their banality creates in tension w their morally reprehnsible actions, and the scathing social commentary they embody every time they're on stage? God yes, and dearest beloved, i want the capacity and the social permission to enjoy bad guys for you too
#the silt verses#don't tell me i don't understand this show#you don't write a character like Hayward and then give him a foil like Daggler for nothing#you're SUPPOSED to empathize w the villains in this show bc you're SUPPOSED to be challenged#and reflect on your own complicities when you see yourself in them#if not what the hell is Paige for

Final Predictions for WandaVision
1. Doctor Strange is going to show up at the end to take "custody" of Wanda.
I know that a significant amount of people are hoping for Strange to swoop in and save the day (or something). But this episode is at most an hour long and cramming in an introduction of Strange is a bit much. If he showed up at the end of episode 8 like Giles did in the penultimate episode of season 6 of Buffy, I'd be all for it. But he didn't so I think he's only going to show up at the end, if not a mid credit scene.
2. Mid-credit scene: Hayward is going to hint at something to do with the upcoming Spider-Man movie/FFH.
Ok so it is my headcanon that Hayward/SWORD commissioned EDITH from Tony and Tony agreed to do so only after ensuring that the Avengers/Peter has primary control of her. So when Hawyard's plan inevitably fails, he will do something to dismiss the power of the remaining Avengers. Like say, tell a ragtag team of disgruntled ex-Stark employees about the existence of EDITH. Or move forward with legislation further restricting superheroes.
3. In Episode: "Fietro" is going to be revealed as either Jimmy Woo's Witness or he's Agatha's Son
I know that everyone is hoping that "Fietro" is in fact Peter Maximoff from the X-Men movies, but I doubt it at this point. It doesn't look like Agatha has the kind of power to break the multiverse nor does it look like Wanda randomly broke the multiverse to bring a random Pietro over. I do like the idea that he is still a mutant that the FBI stashed away for some reason, so I do hope that happens. Also it would make sense if he's Agatha's son, purely for convenience sake. Like I'm having a hard time imagining her walking around Westview being all "OK does this dude look enough like Pietro. No ok does this guy look like Pietro." Makes more sense if he was her son.
4. Shot in the Dark: Ralph is Mordo
It seems like every major villain already revealed in the show is concerned with destroying Wanda purely because she is too powerful. This is totally up Mordo's alley since he's made it his life's goal to get rid of all the excess sorcerers in the world. I don't know why he would necessarily pair up with a witch as dangerous as Agatha, but he could either A) doing so because they have the same goal or B) planning on betraying her at the end
speaking of
4A) Mordo steals the glowing book in a mid-credit scene.
I feel like that book is more important for Doctor Strange 2 than anything else and given the brief description we have of the movie, it totally makes sense that Mordo would steal the book only to use it later in DS2.

Gordon Hayward TO SIGN 4-YR $102 MILLION deal with the HORNETS | CBS Sports HQ
youtube
Gordon Hayward has reportedly found a new NBA home. The veteran forward is signing a four-year, $120 million dollar deal with the Charlotte Hornets, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Hayward had a player option for $34.1 million with the Boston Celtics for the 2020-21 NBA season that he turned down earlier this week in favor of free agency. In order to make space for Hawyard’s new deal, the Hornets will waive Nic Batum, per Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer.
Charlotte will be Hayward’s third NBA home after stints with the Jazz and Celtics. Charlotte’s interest in Hayward isn’t necessarily new, as he signed an offer sheet with the Hornets in 2014 as a restricted free agent, but the Jazz ultimately matched the offer and kept him in Utah. Hayward went on to sign a four-year, $128 million deal with the Celtics in 2017. The Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks were also both reportedly interested in signing Hayward.

‘Edvard Munch: Love and Angst,´ British Museum
The exhibition of Edvard Munch´s printmaking at the British Museum is easy to poke fun at but very much worth seeing. It´s organised too like Bergman themes in a Scandi noir and makes one wonder if the categorisation of the work comes from the work itself or from a received understanding that renders for easy if a bit clichéd structuration, The show is titled Love and Angst with subcategories such as ´Free Love´, ´Despair´, ‘Jealousy’, ´’Loneliness´, ‘Love and Torment’, ´’God and Humanity’ ‘Anguish and Isolation,´ ‘Sickness and Death’ etc. It is ripe for satire: ‘Laugh Along with Much’! Luckily there are forays to Paris and Berlin. The prints are very striking, there are a few paintings as well and his work as a designer for theatre (for works by Strindberg, Ibsen, Gunnar Heiberg) is well documented.
Ive been going through the publication for the manga exhibit and it is truly excellent. One of the things that fascinates me is all the ´boy love´ manga, written by women for women, a bit like those Kirk/Spock drawings Constance Penley used to write about, though even more fragile and more delicately drawn. There are also various types of manga explicitly addressed to gay men, including a series where a Japanese man falls in love with his Canadian brother in law. And of course a very long tradition of cross-dressing heroes and heroines. For those of you interested i´m posting images from the exhibition and from the catalogue here:´
Kiss My Genders at the Hawyard Gallery: a series of extraordinary images, all of which have the effect of interrogating binary discourses of gender whilst nonetheless often juxtaposing elements associated with binary discussions of masculinity and femininity to demonstrate and argue for a more fluid and more inclusive discourse.
Light at the Piazza at Queen Elizabeth Hall
Ciinephiles might have heard of this as a 1963 film, one of Arthur Freed´s few forays into drama, the very last film produced by the very greatest producer of musical films. Yvette Mimieux played the young girl who´d been kicked in the head by horse and rendered ´backward´’, George Hamilton is the Italian who falls in love with her, Rosanno Brazzi is the father of the boy who initially sees an opportunity but backtracks. Olivia de Havilland starred as the mother who wants to give her daughter a chance to love. It was not a big hit in 1963. And it´s not been a big hit as a musical remake. Which is a pity. Adam Guettell´s score, particularly when played by a large-ish orchestra is simply gorgeous. And the singing, by Renée Fleming, Dove Cameron, Rob Houchen, Alex Jennings and Celine Shoemaker, is wondrous. A subline evening of musical theatre.
A further note on Sauvage:
I was watching some of the extras of Camille Vidal-Naquet´s ´Sauvage´. There´s joint interviews with the director, cinematographer and editor where they speak about cuts, choices of lenses, filters etc. And there was a moment where the director is discussing the first scene of the film and says ‘we wanted the moment where Léo opens his eyes and looks up to be a moment akin to the the curtain going up in the theatre´, the beginning of the drama after the overture. And it struck me that part of the problem with criticism is that filmmakers themselves offer analysis of their own work that are considerably more complex than most film criticism offers. They do a fantastic analysis also of how they tried to symbolise freedom through money in Leo´s pocket, a moving zoom shot, and Félix Maritaud´s walk. To generalise, when film criticism seeks to unpack complexity they go to theory or philosophy (particular works of cinema don´t seem worthy enough) whereas fimmakers have no problem articulating the dense, the complex, the symbolic, the poetic…at least on the level of intentions. #ducks
Amazing Grace:
The Midlands Arts Centre has the best projection system in town and one of the best sound systems. It was mostly full and the audience was mostly black. Seeing the film was akin to a religious revival. Aretha´s voice would soar, and the audience couldn´t restrain themselves from whooping and clapping. In a cinema. Lots of Wows were heard throughout. That voice, that singer, singing those songs. It´s like all pain and sadness is transmuted into joy and hope. And one really is left agog that a person can do that, with such freedom and such control. Even her father was rolling in his chair in amazement. See it in a cinema if you get a chance. It was a form of communion.
Medici: Master of Florence is the kind of EU transnational production we may not see much more of in the future. The majority of key actors are British; most of the rest of the production people Italian. It´s quite trashy but also sumptuous and glamorous. Richard Madden is very pretty in it. And it was lovely to see Steve Waddington as a horny bishop, Frances Berber, Brian Cox and even Dusting Hoffman in smaller roles. Ostensibly a huge hit in Italy.
Late Night
It was amateurish and inept. All good intentions, feminist rah rah, but terribly done. Not a good laugh in it, and overly sentimental. Worth seeing only for Emma Thompson, who is fabulousl.
I didn´t even know this graphic novel existed. It´s fab.
Everyone´s been saying Dark Phoenix is terrible but I wanted to see for myself. Everyone is right. A director who gets this budget and this cast and comes out with only this movie doesn´t deserve to make another one. Jessica Chastain is the only actor who makes an impression.
José Arroyo
José´s Week in Culture: ‘Edvard Munch: Love and Angst,´ British Museum The exhibition of Edvard Munch´s printmaking at the British Museum is easy to poke fun at but very much worth seeing.

Hiding the truth in jokes: Why it is not funny
There is this favourite joke of mine that a student in China once told me:
Imagine you are leisurely swimming in the sea on a sunny day. Suddenly, you see that you are surrounded by sharks.
What do you do?
Think for a minute. Seriously, what do you do?
You are swimming in the sea, and then suddenly you see that you are surrounded by sharks.…
Answer (read backwards): .gninigami pots uoY
It appears utterly profane. It is. It is also deeply profound.
For the world of science and scientists the joke would go like this: Imagine there is an objective reality and an objectively existing material universe in which linear causality determine relationships between cause and effect and time is an arrow pointing forward. Imagine this universe is just a random assemblage of physical objects behaving according to constant laws of nature. Imagine this universe and the world we live on are just inanimate matter without consciousness or spirit or anything like that. Imagine that what we call our consciousness is just an aberration, some kind of delusion caused by the electric activity in our physical brains and nerve systems. Imagine that all individual separate physical objects are not connected to each other in any way beyond those that are measurable. Imagine that this material realism is really the way everything is.
Now, suddenly you are surrounded by problems: contradictory theories, research results (in quantum mechanics) that don’t make sense; endless and expanding knowledge, but less and less ability to bring it to use; runaway technology and loss of its social control. Suddenly we are surrounded by climate change, species extinction, resource depletion, growing antibacterial resistance, deforestation, soil erosion, nitrification, epidemics, abject poverty next to ultimate wealth, pollution, over-fishing, obesity pandemics, collapsing ecosystems, collapsing consensus narratives, collapsing economies, collapsing nation-states, and a host of other social, ecological, economical, and cultural crises that together evoke a nightmarishly dystopian zombie-apocalypse vision of the future.
What do you do?
Answer: Yes, you go it. You stop imagining.
Repeat: Stop imagining!
Remember, before this list of problems, we started with paragraph stating the premise: “Imagine…”.
The great unspoken human premise is always this: “Imagine this is real…”.My favourite lines from Thomas Hobbes’ 17th century classic “Leviathan” are these (paraphrased): “When I’m dreaming I consider myself awake. But when I’m awake, I know that I’m not dreaming.
”In other words, when we wake up in the morning and shake the sleep off; after we’ve sorted the few remaining thoughts buzzing around our mind into “real-life memories from yesterday” and “snippets of last night’s dream”, and settle back into waking life, we subconsciously attach the master prefix “Imagine this is real…” to everything that we experience that day, until we lie down again at night and drift off into dream world.
This applies to the religious devotee who says his prayer or gives his offering to his god, the secularist who is happy to wake up in a god-less universe, the paranoid schizophrenic who must live with the people who follow him and monitor his messages and phone calls, the child who plays with her imaginary friend, the soldier who is fighting the enemy of the state, and the scientist who is statistically modelling the spread of COVID-19.
Human brains universally prefix the lines “imagine this is real…” before anything they experience and do in waking life. Most people can’t even switch it off if they want to, for example when they go to see a movie.
We cry when we experience tragedy, clinch our fists from dramatic suspense, shudder from violence and gore, and shriek from surprise, even if it’s all just acting, fake blood, and props. And we know perfectly well that it is, because we’re in a movie theatre. However, we are operating in “waking-life-imagine-this-is-real mode”, so we have physical and measurable responses.
The few exceptions to this universal phenomenon of prefixing are enlightenend sages, philosophers, and artists, in other words, people for whom the questions of reality and imagination become their meditation, their raison d’etre, or their creative expression.
Anyways, to come back to the joke, which is really a joke but it’s also dead serious, the point is that we have vast powers of imagination. We can imagine one world and we can imagine a different world, no joking!
For my part, I would suggest imagining a world that is imbued with spirit, or consciousness, or intelligence, or life, however you want to call it; a world that is both material and measurable as well as immaterial and immeasurable; a world that is both objective (kind-of) and a subjective experience; a world that determines our reality and, conversely, is determined by our reality, described best as a dance, or a cooperation, or a living, adaptive, mutually negotiated relationship; Imagine a world that is not random, but that follows patterns and orders, some of which we can understand and visualise, and others that transcend our perception. Imagine a world that is the embodiment of the intelligence inside nature, which is reflected in all natural phenomena, including those that we define as life, those that we define as ecological or planetary processes, for example the carbon, water, nitrogen, and many other cycles, and those that don’t fit into our mutually exclusive categories of life and death, such as viruses. Imagine that the human consciousness is not an aberration or a random occurance, but the “logical” outcome of a conscious universe, like Alan Watts said: “An apple tree ‘apples’, and a universe ‘peoples’”, suggesting to use a verb to describe the apple tree rather than a noun. In other words, an apple grows from a tree not randomly, but because the idea of an apple is integral to an apple tree, and because apples aid in propagating the idea of apples and apple trees. Conscious humans (and all sentient beings) are not a random phenomenon in the cosmos, but reflect the tendency of a conscious (or living) universe to propagate consciousness. Finally, imagine that everything is connected with each other, through time and space, that, in fact, time and space, are our (biocentric) attempts to map the connections and relationships between disparate seeming things. Imagine further that humans are rather blind and ignorant little animals in a world they largely cannot understand because most of it is beyond their perception. There’s a whole lot more you could imagine and details you could add, but I’ll stop here. I think you get the point.
The point is this:
It’s time to stop imagining. It’s time to begin imagining. A better world; Reality 2.0 A #New Story.
The end.
Interactive part.
Self assessment: On a scale from 1-10, where 1 represents ”not at all” and 10 represents ”completely”, how well do you relate to the messages conveyed in this text?
Answer: ______
Answer Key:
8-10: Congratulations! You are definitely part of the vanguard. You have the privilege and share in the joy of being part of a bright and unwritten future. You are a cocreator and important agent in exploring this novel and exciting paradigm. Unfortunately, you are stuck in a rather backward and repressive present together with the rest of us.
5-8: You are on the right path. Being critical to existing dogma is a start. Being open to new and unsettling ideas shows your courage and reflects your passion for exploration and adventure. Find likeminded people and travel the road to the new story with good and loyal companions.
3-5: Having read this far shows that you are a true intellectual. You use your mind like a parachute: you know it needs to be open for optimal results. You have perhaps not yet stumbled over key thinkers or certain critical literature. I suggest you take a look at Thomas Kuhn’s “Structure of Scientific Revolutions”, all books by Fritjof Capra, “Changing Minds, Shifting Worlds” by Jeremey Hawyard, “Biocentrism” and “Beyond Biocentrism” by Robert Lanza, “New Dark Age” by James Bridle, and many others.
1-3: You like to stand on solid ground and think in terms of tangible and time-tested concepts. Thank you! Without people like you, the world would be a mess. However, you also realise the importance of challenging your thinking. If you seek further challenge, read up on the concept of “paradigms”, in science and culture. You could continue to read about challenges to the Cartesian paradigm and read “Climate Change – A New Story” by Charles Eisenstein. In addition, seek other literature (see above) and continue reading people who challenge your thoughts.
1-10: Continue to hide the truth in jokes. Don’t hide the truth in jokes. It doesn’t matter. Wherever it is, it won’t remain hidden for long.

Saturday Sports Multiple: A Chelsea win the headline in a 5/1 weekend wager

Saturday Sports Multiple: A Chelsea win the headline in a 5/1 weekend wager Please share.
Andrew Hughes thinks Chelsea will beat Manchester United on Saturday and help to land another weekend multiple in the process “The most surprising thing about this United team is how un-Mourinho-like they are, because for the first time in his managerial career, he has been unable to construct a water-tight defensive structure.”
Not that long ago, this would have been the sort of fixture that Jose Mourinho would thrive on: a return visit to a previous employer, with the media writing him off. The formula was always the same: set up his team to frustrate and emerge with at least a point. But that is unlikely to happen this time.
The most surprising thing about this United team is how un-Mourinho-like they are, because for the first time in his managerial career, he has been unable to construct a water-tight defensive structure. Already this season, they’ve conceded three goals to Tottenham, West Ham and Brighton, and as Stephen Tudor points out, they are conceding 1.7 goals a game, mainly against middle or lower-ranked teams.
That tendency to leak goals makes the usual Mourinho game plan impossible, and he has been reduced to hoping for the best from his array of talented forwards. Against an unbeaten Chelsea side, with Eden Hazard and Olivier Giroud in such good form, United fans should brace themselves for the worst.
There’s another busy weekend of Champions Cup rugby ahead and you can catch up with all of the latest tips and previews on the Betting.Betfair Rugby Union pages.
Reigning English champions Exeter had a tough opener to their Pool 2 campaign and were held to a draw by Munster, and Saturday’s assignment doesn’t look any easier, as they head to the south of France to take on Castres at Stade Pierre-Fabre.
But there are reasons for optimism for Exeter fans. Castre have not been in the best form so far this season, losing three out of seven domestically, and they were well beaten by Gloucester last time. By contrast, Exeter have a perfect record in the Gallagher Premiership, including impressive away wins at Bath and Wasps. This will be a hard-fought game, but I’m backing the Chiefs to edge it.
The two big guns in the NBA East go head to head in what is already looking like a rehearsal for the Conference Finals next May.
Boston, with Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward back on the court, pulverized Philadelphia in Tuesday’s opening night, while the reshaped Toronto Raptors, led by Kawhi Leonard, easily disposed of last year’s Conference winners Cleveland.
Home side Toronto have been given favouritism here, but the Celtics have no apparent weakness. With the phenomenal young talent of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown backing up Irving and Hawyard, not to mention the experience of Al Horford at center, this is a team that can go all the way to the NBA Championship and challenge the Warriors next summer. Back them to win in Canada on Saturday.

Gordon Hayward's adorable daughters are very busy helping him recover at home
This is great.
Gordon Hawyard is home and resting after his surgery, and his wife Robyn posted the sweetest photo of him recovering.
Charlie's definitely a daddy's girl❤️. #babymullet

Hayward would obviously like to be on the court with the Celtics, but this isn’t so bad when you think about it. Having two of your biggest fans at home beats a full arena.
I know two little girls who can't wait to help their daddy feel better! #doctorbernie #doctorcharlie #daddyslittlegirls

One of the most poignant pieces of advice Kobe Bryant gave Gordon Hayward after his season-ending injury is that eventually he’d “find beauty in the struggle of doing simple things,” and that could well be true. For now he’s surrounded by love, and that’s all anyone could want.
