References to Previous Final Fantasies in Dawntrail

Or, how 9 + 11 + 6 = 14, somehow. (SPOILERS, OBVIOUSLY)

I've played every mainline FF, plus a few others, so one of my favorite things about playing XIV is seeing what they do with previous FFs, and how they incorporate it into the world/story. Dawntrail very very much did this, to the point that I could literally predict plot points before they happened. (THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT I LOVED THIS)

So I figured I would put down my fanboying in text form, for people to read the insanity of a madman who has played too many JRPGs from a single series.

Note: I have not completed every single side quest, but I have done the entire MSQ, every dungeon, and 3/5 of the role quests. This isn't a complete collection, just what I noticed :)

Krile's "real name" is Maya. The original Krile in FFV was Krile Meyer Baldesion. (XIV might also have the middle name but I don't remember! I'm gonna put it here regardless!)

VI

Valigarmanda is the first Esper you encounter in VI, right at the start of the game. Its summon attack is Tri-Disaster. I really liked how they kept it frozen in ice, just like the original, and because Tri-Disaster is a SMN ability, they changed it to Tulidisaster to fit the Tural location.

Pictomancer was first in VI as well, being Relm's job. She even got to be in XIV as well, being credited as the Archon who created the art (HA). Shoutouts to the Relm reborn joke it needed to happen

IX

One of the two most important games in this expansion. There is A Lot here.

The preorder bonus/deluxe edition had a Wind-Up Zidane and Garnet, the two main protagonists of FFIX.

Alexandria is lifted directly from IX. The name, the style of the buildings, and even the castle with the crystal popping out of the top, shown in the dungeon and in Yesterland in Living Memory.

(This is the Dissidia NT version, but I wanted a picture that showed the castle and the roof architecture)

Solution Nine is named after one of Zidane's Dyne abilities. While not direct, Living Memory, the final zone, is very reminiscent of Memoria, the final dungeon of IX. I wonder if you can get a special sword by completing the entire MSQ in under 2 hours?

Living Memory also features quite a few locations from IX. The Canal Town looks very similar to Treno, and features a location called the Daguerreo Medical Collection, named after the city as well. Underneath Proto Alexandria in Yesterland, where the data terminal lies, looks very similar to the part of Alexandria Castle where Steiner can grind to level 99 (I don't know how else to describe it if you know you know). In the Windspath Gardens lies the Cleyra Museum of Nature, also named after the IX city.

Some quest text in Living Memory tells you about other locations in the Unlost World. Lindblum, the city that holds hunts and is very technologically advanced; Conde Petie, where the Dwarves are from (mentioned by a Milalla who said he was from there), and the Iifa Tree. There might even be more here, that I either missed or haven't done yet.

Another quest has you go on a treasure hunt for a password. This password? "I Want to Be Your Canary", the play from FFIX.

Solution Nine has a couple buildings with monsters from IX as signs. One building features a Mu (Which is also mentioned in Living Memory), and another building features Yans, both friendly and not friendly.

Another monster that I noticed a reference to was the Gimme Cat, which is featured on the popcorn in Living Memory. It's also mentioned as an energy drink, but called a "Gimme Bat" instead? I guess it does have bat wings.

While XIV doesn't have any direct plot important characters from IX, the ones we do have are very reminiscent of its cast, and clearly are done like that on purpose.

Otis is Steiner (with maybe a little tiny bit of Beatrix depending on how you look at it). Captain of the Knights of Alexandria, he speaks in an older fashion, similar to Steiner, and is very loyal to his princess.

Sphene is an interesting mix. The most obvious one is Garnet, both being Queens of Alexandria, being named after stones, and loving their people. The other one, which might be argued isn't intended, is Garland.

(No, not those guys. The other one.)

Garland in IX is an artificial being whose purpose is to continue his world's life. To do this, he would try to fuse Terra (his planet), with Gaia (the main planet), and control Gaian souls for Terra instead. What did Sphene do? Try to fuse her reflection with the Source, to use their souls for her own people. I personally think this is a very clear similarity.

In general, because of this similarity, the latter half of Dawntrail shares very similar themes with IX's plots, dealing with death and souls. I also think it's pretty funny that both start out pretty happy and cartoony, and end fairly depressing and existential.

Another plot point used in the MSQ is the play sequence. While IX's is based off love, and XIV's is the history of Alexandria, both feature a sword fight scene. (99 out of 100 nobles approve).

Finally, several songs from IX are used in Dawntrail. In the above mentioned play, Swords of Fury plays, just like the original. And a few scenes later, Vamo'alla Flamenco (previously used for the DNC quests) plays, though it should have been during the sword fight!! Prima Vista Orchestra and Fleeting Life are used in several scenes, usually involving Sphene. Something to Protect also appears, but in a scene I can't recall. Finally, the Court Jesters' theme gets a remix as the main song in the Strayborough Deadwalk.

X

There is a singular joke in Heritage Found made about dodging lightning bolts right before the flash so they don't hit you. The person who wrote this line wanted to induce PTSD in as many people as they could with only a single line of dialogue.

XI

The other most important game in the expansion. In a way, Dawntrail FEELS like it could have been an XI expansion in another lifetime. I might be looking too much into it, but I feel as though this was foreshadowed back in the first patch of Endwalker, as Dawntrail takes A LOT from the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion.

In Endwalker, the Alzadaal's Legacy dungeon was based off of the Alzadaal Underwater Ruins in Aht Urhgan. The dungeon used many models from XI, such as the Rampart, the Xzomit (hell yes!), and the Acrolith. The dungeon had a visual similarity, as well as the areas in the dungeon being named after zones in Aht Urhgan (Bhaflau Thickets, Arrapago Reef, and Mount Zhayolm). I know this is Endwalker and not Dawntrail but trust me it's important for the foreshadowing.

Gulool Ja Ja was a boss in the Besieged mode of ToAU, leading the Mamool Ja Savages to assault Al Zahbi. Both incarnations of this character are VERY different from each other.

Similarly, Gurfurlur was also a boss in Besieged, leading the Troll Mercenaries. It's very funny to me that both of these warmongers became such nice people in Tural.

The Yok Huy as a whole are actually Trolls from XI. The different name I assume coming from the fact that Trolls are already an enemy in XIV, in Labyrinthos.

While this isn't direct, and is probably unintentional, the fact that the final boss in Vanguard was a naga/lamia like entity only makes me wonder if it was somehow a callback to Medusa and the Undead Swarm, the last remaining Besieged invaders.

Zoraal Ja is a Notorious Monster in the areas around Aht Urhgan.

To continue on with Mamool Ja facts, Mamook is an area in ToAU. They don't look very similar, but they do both share the title of Autarch as their ruler. Mamool Ja in general come from XI, so it's no surprise that in the expansion that well, expands on them, it uses XI for inspiration.

This next one might be a little insane. The general plot of Treasures of Aht Urhgan, is that after killing Promathia, a god that wishes to end all life, the Adventurer goes to a completely different area to have a relatively calmer adventure. Here, they meet a female member of royalty named Aphmau. Her brother, Razfahd, unable to rule over the country, has a conquering nature, and uses an Automaton body to control Alexander for his goals. This... can't be a coincidence, right?? We kill the Endsinger, who wanted to end all life, go to a completely different area to have a relatively calmer adventure with our female member of royalty, Wuk Lamat, and we fight against Zoraal Ja, her war hungry brother that is unable to rule, so he uses the power of Alexandria (a mech suit) for his goals. You... you see what I'm cooking here right??? RIGHT!?!?!

To piggyback off of this, Wuk Lamat very much fits the role of the XI heroine. A girl who is very clearly the main character of the story, and hangs around you more than anyone else.

Edit: one last thing that I forgot to put down before posting, one of the hunts uses the Magic Pot model from XI. We love Magic Pot.

I THINK that should be everything I found? I know for a fact we're going to get more since the Alliance Raids are based of off XI (I'm so excited)

XIII

A couple enemy models were used from XIII.

The Silver Lobos in Urqopacha use the XIII model. I'm fairly sure they've never been used in XIV yet, but I could be wrong.

Similarly, the Strayborough Deadwalk uses the Gremlin/Ahriman enemies. I do not think they've been used before this, feel free to yell at me if I'm wrong :)

Type-0

While not like, direct, the concept of erasing the memories of anyone who has died (especially seen as a blessing) was a major plot point of Type-0's world.

I think that's everything? My memory isn't the greatest, so I'm sure there's something I noticed that I missed, and again; I haven't done everything, so there might be even more out there that I've yet to find!

In all seriousness, there's a couple I feel that end on a higher note. Forsaken, Silver and Gold both come to mind. I have a few one shots floating around that lighter in humor as well.

I haven't no. I'm not a huge fan of them.

Not on Ao3 no, but back on FF I have. Woke up one morning to a flood of emails from concerned readers flagging a fic that matched one of mine word for word in some areas. Issue was resolved quite quickly though. Bless my readers who kept an eye out for that.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I had some older Robin Hood fic that were translated into Finnish actually! That was a pretty cool experience. So long ago now I don't remember where it was posted (FF I think, and one other site), but it was big thing at that time, esp since I was still in high school.

Several times yes! It can be quite a bit of fun, esp when working to match styles of the other writer(s).

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

Once again – Ace, so I'm not too invested in such a thing. That being said, for RDR2, other than canon ships, I do see the appeal of Sadie/Arthur as well as Charles/Arthur, though I write (nor read) either really.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

We're not going to talk about my four unfinished fics, because I'm going to finish them eventually.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I've been told I tend to capture the likeness of certain characters, including dialogue and inner thoughts. I feel like I keep good pacing over longer stories, and that I have the ability to paint vivid scenes to help readers immerse themselves in the story.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I have the inability to write a short fic. Anytime I tell myself 'Oh yeah, that'll only be x words/chapters, it nearly triples in length. Looking at you, Silver and Gold, (aka minibang fic)

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I've done this before with some Spanish when characters were in appropriate situations, where they weren't supposed to know/understand what was being said. I think I've done it once with German, but I could be wrong. I feel it add flavor when done a sparse amount, and not have it be too overbearing for the reader to muddle through.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Lord of the Rings was the first fandom I wrote and actually posted for, though Jedi Apprentice from Star Wars was what got the fanfic train rolling. I rewrote an ending to something that really annoyed me and I felt like I could write it better so I did. That was in the pre-internet era though, so it never made it online. (FF didn't even exist yet!)

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

I'm fairly partial to Learning Hurts. It has a mix of what I enjoy (Hurt, comfort, reassurance, growth) and I love the play of the title. Several characters end up learning something over the course of the story, and as implied, those lessons all come with a bit of hurting.

This sort of thing has kinda been getting to me too lately. Along with the rest of that Midlife Crisis: Special Disabled Edition bundle.

I mean, at this point? There isn't really one single thing going on that you could really point at and say, "yep, that'll keep you from being conventionally Productive".

Meanwhile, I keep getting frustrated at how basically any medical professional I end up having to deal with basically goes, "My, aren't you a COMPLEX hot mess? What should we do with you?!"--and acting like it's amazing that i'm moving around at all or even want to. Seriously, they keep acting like I'm 100 years old and holding on by the couple of fingernails that haven't already crumbled away to dust.

Still got strangers acting oddly surprised that I can put my own socks or jacket on, or look at my own foot unassisted--much less pick up the thing I just dropped in the floor, ffs. (Legit recent examples.) When I was in the process of doing the thing until they grabbed my socks away from where I put them and was already reaching for them. I am not even kidding one bit. It's weird as hell, and more than a little condescending.

(Which yeah, if that's how you're actually viewing and dealing with elderly people? I wouldn't particular want to be relying on you as a genuine old person either. What kind of quality of life or autonomy are you thinking is appropriate for an older person to even expect?! Similar to the "don't treat $ADULT like a child" thing. If that's how somebody really thinks it's appropriate to deal with kids, I hope they stay the hell away from actual children for everybody's sake. Nobody needs that shit. Actually respectful help with things anybody needs and wants help with, sure.)

That digression aside, the "complex hot mess" thing is only considering some of the straightforward and really obvious physical stuff. Though the fucking allergies and probably-EDS which barely get considered at all by anyone outside this household are more troublesome most days on that front, anyway.

But yeah, there's also the mixed bag of neuroweirdness that I do not care to discuss with any type of professionals ever again, if I can help it. I did have other unaddressed physical health shit going on at the time, but one rather spectacular burnout was what did actually get me on SSI on the first try 20+ years ago. I didn't know that ever happened without appeals and lawyers, but I got ”lucky”. (And also I apparently scared the fuck out of the assessor they hired, who happened to be someone my mother used to see. Small areas...)

The unaddressed physical garbage certainly helped set the stage for that episode, but yeah it was The 'Tism--still getting called everything but that--which got me disability benefits that I really did need then. I've had at least one more "minor" TBI--and the good old grey matter took another hit from freaking sepsis--since then.

These days, I feel like the physical shit that normies I've never seen before keep getting in such an ableist tizzy over is usually more of a petty background annoyance to consider. I've lived with MUCH worse. (While nobody much seemed to notice or care--excepting my partner.)

At least I'm not anywhere near so fatigued with some insulin and certain vitamins in my system now, or running around in constant distracting-level pain these days. I am physically in MUCH better shape than I was five years ago, and at near-zero risk of dying over even the medium term from anything that is currently going on with my body. Keep me in insulin and prosthetic supplies, and I'll be fine enough. It's still the neuroweirdness that's mainly keeping me from getting shit done on my own itinerary.

These days, alongside the whole "foreigner who can't speak the local language too well yet, and has barely any paid employment history after crashing out of college decades ago" shit enchilada. That'll get you hired ASAP for things that don't require so much self direction or executive function in general.

Yeah, my personal baseline is set a little different from most people without any up-close experience of chronic conditions. I just keep on ticking, because wtf else are you gonna do? It still sort of gangs up together, and has its own complex interactions going. But, there is also plenty of other shit going on that also does not help with "productivity". Maybe I really should cut myself some more slack over getting shit accomplished.

Slack won't help pay any bills, but it'll probably help keep me more functional and flirting less with further serious burnout. I sure as hell wouldn't ride anybody else's case like this. Also wouldn't be surprised if they snapped on anybody who did.

Stolas wanted nothing more than to be reunited with Octavia that entire episode! That man only had ONE worry, and that was OCTAVIA!

I have screenshots and receipts and ya'll just be on my feed testing my ass.

Firstly, Stolas was incredibly stressed due to Stella. Let's not act like Stolas even completely forgot about Via, he just asked for a moment to sort BS out with fuckin' Stella. Octavia needs to understand that parents can get busy, especially when stressed ffs.

ANYWAY

Stolas expresses genuine anxiety the entire time Octavia is missing. He shows up on Blitz's doorstep in DEMON FORM, PISSED OFF.

Blitzo: So, your daughter came by, took your book, and teleported off to who the fuck knows where, and we have no way of getting either of them back, okay?! Okay! Good talk, byeee!

[He looks progressively more worried as he speaks and quickly puts the phone down when he's done, backing away slightly.]

Blitzo: Oh, that actually went better than I thought.

[The door blows up and Stolas stands inside in his full demon form.]

Stolas: *demonically* BLITZO!

Stolas is worried SICK, and completely engulfed in anxiety the entire time, but what do I expect from anon's. Ya'll do not like to watch the dang show.

Stolas: How could this happen?! Do you just let anyone waltz into your office and grab infinitely powerful artifacts?! *clutches at his hat worriedly* Why would she do this? How are we supposed to find her? Where would she go?

He's pacing and freaking out, getting pissed at Blitz for not fucking guarding the Grimoire bc wtf.

Ya'll act like this isn't the face of a deeply terrified and concerned dad who just wants his daughter to be fucking safe. Stolas's biggest anxiety tell is when he holds his hands to his chest and makes himself "smaller".

As seen here in his human form. He fidgets to handle the anxiety and the big thing is clutching to his hat or fidgeting with his hands close to his heart, always. The man is worried and he does give a fuck.

Sadly due to Blitz's stunning resemblance to Brandon Ragers they are held captive for a while and yknow what yes, Stolas had a singular moment where he fell in love with Blitz all over again, but you know what they did right after that??? WENT LOOKING FOR OCTAVIA.

They IMMEDIATELY get back to looking for the girls because that's what they came to do and funfact that's a thing Stolas cares about in a man. He cares if they'll care about his daughter and Blitz being a decent father actually GIVES A FLYING FUCK.

On top of that, earlier Blitz was sure to send Loona to check on Octavia and look for her! It's not like no one was looking for her. Blitz sent Loona to go looking for her due to Stolas's anxiety! Stolas is the catalyst for that even happening!

Also we all know 12 pairs of eyes are better than fucking 2 so again idk why we are hellbent on just Stolas looking for her. The man went to Blitz and seeked out help for fucks sakes.

Now I want to note that when Blitz and Stolas set out to find Octavia it was really sunny out on Earth.

By the end of the episode it is night time. That means both Stolas and Blitz were looking for Octavia all fuckin day and dealing with all the obstacles that came with it.

These fuckers were out searching for her along with Millie, Moxxie, and Loona! Loona just so happens to be the only smart one to up Sinstagram!

Stolas was beyond worried about that girl and he spent the entire day just trying to get back to her. He felt AWFUL when he realized he had forgotten about his promise. Just absolutely awful when he realized.

Stolas: I'm just relieved you're okay! But, what would possess you to do such a thing? You know I haven't taught you spells like this yet.

Octavia: I just wanted to see the stars you promised.

Stolas: The stars? *gasps* Azathoth's tears! Oh, no. Oh, my dear sweet Via. I am so--

He feels bad and awful, but that man spent the entire day trying to get back to her and make sure that she was okay. Unlike other parents who yell at their kids when they run away, Stolas was just relieved she was okay! He cared so much about her safety the entire time!

If this isn't a hug of pure love and worry I don't know what is.

Ya'll can keep trying to lie to yourselves that he is a bad father, but he actually gives a damn about this girl. Spending an entire day searching for her. Dropping EVERYTHING he was doing to make sure that she was safe first.

I wish a lot of you would take Loona's advice here. Stolas is trying. I want to remind everyone he is in an impossible situation. Abuse victims can't take up to 7 tries to finally leave their abusers. The man is fighting to do right by himself and his daughter.

For fuck's sakes, cut the man some slack.

He may not make the perfect choices or say the right things, but damnit he is in the worst situation and doing better than most of us would be doing in his damn shoes.

Lately I have been struggling with the Duolingo's German tree a lot, and for reasons I haven't understood until just now.

Only one part of the problem is that my tree got yet another update recently and it again wiped out some of my progress. Once before I managed to get the golden owl, then my whole progress was wiped and there were so many totally empty skills, starting from even the basics. I did all those and then there was another update that wiped out some of the added skills and meant a big part of the progress I did after the update, was again wiped out because suddenly none of those skills existed anymore.

Then I started working on those remaining skills, eventually getting everything to the 1st level at least. Until there was yet another update a few days ago and now there is a 6th checkpoint which is completely empty. So, I have AGAIN a set of skills to get to the 1st level, most likely lots of stuff that I have already done before, maybe even more than once.

And then the other problem that I noticed much more recently. In fact: today. Just now. So I have this problem with the German tree that I can't progress. I keep making stupid mistakes that cause me to lose all the hearts on app, or my motivation on web. Often those are not even my mistakes, but stuff that is still lacking from Duolingo because the content is still so new. This other day I lost a heart because the word was "Mütze" and I wrote "beanie", and got marked wrong because it wanted the word for "hat". Which in German is "Hut", and "Mütze" is a specific BEANIE-LIKE HAT AND I LOST A HEART FOR USING THE CORRECT WORD FFS

Today I realized that there is also a third (fourth fifth sixth..?) problem: the English used. I am fluent in English but Duolingo is now actually using lots of English words and saying I have never heard before and therefore I can't even KNOW what they mean in German if I don't even know what they mean in ENGLISH, and have to check my dictionary which often does not even know what those are in Finnish because the English word is, say, in spoken language or even slang. It really makes it hard to get through this tree, and discouraging to even try because I'm supposed to be learning German and not English here.

One of the words they use is "to get worked up". And I still don't completely understand what it means, I had English natives (or others who know the word?) to explain the word for me so I kinda understand it now, but the problem is that I always forget about this when the German word appears. And then I use an alternative in English, and Duolingo says no. It just has to be "to get worked up".

And just now I also got another word or saying like this that I can't remember anymore, but it was something I had never heard before and still don't understand the tone of. And somehow I was supposed to know what it means in German. When even an English-German dictionary did not know what it is in German or could not explain it to me.

Btw, are "to concentrate" and "to pay attention" not synonyms? I, also, got marked wrong for writing "konzentriere" for "pay attention" when it should have been "pass auf". But with this I have to blame Finnish. In Finnish we have one word that means both in the context of that sentence ("Pay attention to the homework!"), and then we have another that actually means "to pay attention" but it is used in different contexts only.

Uh, it can be really exhausting to be trilingual and still not speak the 2nd language perfectly either...

Saints row character creator thoughts!!!

Let's get this out of the way:

CONS: - body types still work the same way as in 3 and 4, still no real customization of your body shape. It's not bad, but sucks that they done nothing with it

-- almost no sliders! You select face options from a (very small) list of presets, you can customize them but it basiclly does nothing and there is very little you can play around with. BAD!

-- they abolutley nerfed the breats/groind sliders. In previous game, max boob slider gave you comiclly cartoonish pair of honkers. In here, max breast is just avarage C-cup-ish size. You can argue about sexualization and yada yada, but it's an adult game with violance and sex. They want you do have "freedom in making characters", yet you cand make a guy with big tits. bad.

-- groin slider just makes the crotch area inflate??? It looks really weird when put under any revealing clothing. Im not expecint them to make a realistic cock bulgde ofc, but ffs, it looks like a tumor under your clothes, it's weird.

-- BODY HAIR IS SUCH A GREAT ADDITON! Why is it in cons? Becuse you can't really control it - it's all or nothing. You can't make your character have hairy legs or arms, it's either no body hair or you are hairy all over. It's not some sort of big deal, but i still think it would be cool to let you customize it more, especially since it would not be that difficult to just segment the hair and let you pick on/off which parts you want.

-- hairstles and beard styles are really, really lacking. Im hoping that it's just for the demo and the full game will have some more, but for now... eh. Also, why can't i flip the hair? The game already has asymetrical face editing, let me flip my bangs bro.

-- Clothing styles are not there. Come on volition, let me pick if i want an open shirt or a closed shirt! Zipped up hoodie or zipped down! It's not that much, please!!! let me have this!!

It is a great character creator, don't get me wrong! I had a lot of fun playing with it, mostly with all the clothes combinations you can pull off. It's still a fun saints row creator!

But that's the problem! After the initial novelty wore off, i can't shake the feeling that i could make the exact same character in the other games. After all the promises of how much of the customization aspect is built for making super unique and craaaazy characters, i feel let down. You can't really play that much the crazy aspect since almost every slider is gone from the game now. And exluding that, it just feels the same as the creator from 3 and 4, just with few near features added on top of it - and a lot of features removed.

It's fun, you can make a lot, but it still feels like there could be even more freedom - especially since all the trailers were talking about that freedom, and it's just not really there.

Again - it's fun. But it's like getting your favoured burger with one extra ingidient - it's great, but becuse it's the same thing with extra shit on it - you can barely feel the difference.

I know they said somethjing about the boss maker not having all of the features from the full game, which gives me hope and interest for the full thing. But still, i doubt it will be much different for maybe, more hairstyles and some bonus clothes. Not beliveing that they saved key componets for the full game, its dumb.

Still waiting for the game, still "somewhat" interested. We'll see how it playes out.

PART 1) I'm the anon that asked about tips on how to be a better writer. I just wanted to say thank you. I have not started writing yet, but just reading through the tips page you linked me to, I already feel better about the concerns I have about my writing. I want to start writing because, as much as I love the EXO fics I have read, there are still things that I would like to read, but I just haven't found yet or has not been written. And if there is one person, there is bound to be many more.

PART 2) I have seen a few cross group fics, but just not with cross group pairings I’d like, pairings within the group I feel like I don’t see enough of, and storied within genres I’d like to see more of. All that being said, I have my really big ideas that, if done correctly, will be awesome. But I’d like to start a little smaller. So can you list some things that you feel or that readers feel there is not enough of? Pairings or genres?

PART 3) I’m sorry to be so annoying. But I have one more question. I like smut. I like depictions of sex in the stories I read. I like it most when the sex comes from a build up of a connection between characters and leads to something. But I cannot even begin to think about how to write a proper sex scene that actually means something to the story. Any tips? Any links to explanations on how to do that? Again, so so so sorry!

I’m so happy that you found my reply so useful and that it motivated you to start writing! That’s amazing.

Now to address some things that you didn’t ask for, but I can tell they might interest you.

This is something I struggle a lot with. You finally come to terms with your insecurities and decide to start writing and your mind is overflowing with ideas and you start writing them down, and you’re so impatient to do everything that in the end... you do nothing. My point is to take things slow. Start with a story (a small story) and devote to the story, don’t let your mind wander aimlessly to other ideas. I mean, if you suddenly have an awesome idea then, of course, write it down, but before investing all your thought on it, please give what you started a chance.

And I don’t mean to finish everything you started. If you don’t like something, if something is not working out, if it stresses you out, if you’re not happy anymore with it then, by all means, abandon it. This is meant to bring you joy. But what happens to me is that when I encounter the first obstacle in my story, when I’m stuck, my mind goes to other stories. I don’t try to fix it. I reached a point when I didn’t finish anything. That’s why I recommend writing for fests, most of my stories are written for fests because it creates a sense of responsibility. When I encounter an obstacle, I try to fix it, because... I have to present something right? But this is my personal tip, do what works for you.

And trust me, not finishing your stories will happen to you if you don’t write things you like. Asking us for things that we feel we need as a fandom community is so subjective. What I feel we are missing is completely different to what admin Ana feels or admin Ellen, or any of our followers. And most important, you. And besides, what’s wrong with writing things that are common? Start with a small and fluffy domestic story. Or a funny high school au. Write what you like. If you don’t, then your mind will always wander around the “big” projects you want to write and the rest will be like a chore. If you want to start small, find an inspiration and write something small, no matter how common of a trope/ship it is.

Also, if your awesome ideas don’t work out because it’s something you feel the ff fandom is lacking and not something that you enjoy writing, then please abandon it. E.g. what we are lacking is omega/omega stories, that is a fact. But do you like a/b/o? And if you do... do you feel inspired to write an omega/omega story? Would you enjoy it more if you read it or if you wrote it? Don’t feel obliged to write it just because there are not enough stories out there like this.

And to answer the last question (you are not annoying don’t worry), if you can’t write a sex scene... it’s okay? You don’t need smut to make your fic worthy. And because I’m not an expert on this either, I don’t usually decide if a fic is going to be rated or not when I start writing it. As you said, I have to feel that it flows naturally, so if that happens then I write it.

Actual advice that works for me is listening to white noise. But maybe that works for me because I have ADHD, I don’t know, but it really helps me with rated scenes. The noise helps me to focus only on what I write and not get flustered or embarrassed or start thinking “what the hell am I doing”. I just write and I have to come to terms with what I created when I go back to edit, haha.

Studying what you like on other author’s rated scenes goes without saying. Just study a scene you reaaaally love and try to think why. Is it the pacing? The words used? The way the characters interact?

All my highest kudo'd fics are from various fandoms that aren't Musketeers, unfortunately, they're not my biggest rated ones. Though my first Muskies fic is 4th highest out of ten fics on that account.

I certainly try to, admittedly I don't respond to every single one anymore, but it depends on my mental health on the particular day I receive it.

The closest I've done to a crossover is putting characters from one source material into another universe (that I don't own either)

That's a lie, I did write a crossover that I haven't actually finished, but it was Captain America and Guardians of the Galaxy, which isn't that wild but when I started writing it, those two casts of characters hadn't interacted anywhere near each other yet

The crossed-out text above ^ I didn't necessarily receive hate on it, but an anonymous commenter asked that I remove the fandom tag for the universe that I had inserted the other characters into. Pretty sure I know who it was cause the fandom only had three fics before me and they were all the same person lol

That's a tough one for me cause romantic ships are a sort of "out of sight, out of mind" situation for me 😆 I can never remember one of the top of my head when asked, but when I see them together brain goes "!!!!!"

I have a Fallout 4 fic that's been sitting in my documents for 4 years. I want it to be done so bad, it's my longest fic to date, but I'm stuck really bad.

I'm not sure anymore haha I used to be good at conveying emotions and inciting emotions in my readers, I'm very out of practice lately sadly

Dialogue probably

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I try not to, and if you do it and knowing the translation is important, add it right there. There is zero chance that I'll scroll all the way down to the end notes just to parse together what's happening.

Way back in the day on an account I no longer have access to, I posted a Supernatural fic on ff dot net. On Ao3 though (my only fanfic site I use now) my first fandom was the Musketeers

Probably the one I mentioned a few questions ago, Live For Your Brothers. It was my first after a long drought of writing and it poured onto the page so quickly and easily (even though I was awake until like 3 AM writing it and had to be up for work at 6 😩)

I've got to be honest, I get where you're coming from but I think a lot of people reblogging this are coming from a different angle- they're not farming to subsist/survive, building houses, or doing other things that actually contribute real meaning and help to society {as one would've done before capitalism}. I think what's annoying to most is that we have the technology and awareness nowadays to make things so much better and progress so much, so that those necessities can be taken care of by things that don't manipulate people's lives to the point that they can't make meaningful contributions out of them, but instead they're selling luxuries, convenience, obsolete modes of work, and subservience to people who don't value those real hours put in and don't pay them enough to live comfortably {not struggling to make rent, getting healthcare when needed, etc.}

Nothing is black or white, there are likely those that fall in between or outside the two extremities of thinking, but this is my take: unnecessary labour, not enough pay to live, hours of life gone, meaningful contributions and ability to meaningfully pursue happiness EXTREMELY minimalized {and this just for abled people}, yet you have to show up with a smile and tell employers how much you love taking customer abuse and shucking your true personality for 40 hours a week {not in those words, of course} because nothing other than the current modes of society dictate it's either that, or homelessness.

There can be nice facets of the job you like, like certain customers or certain parts of your job that you like doing, but holding onto the little things as a way to make it through the day is a bit bleak when you know it doesn't have to be like this.

Also, this isn't meant to be condescending in the slightest, but please look up "wage slavery" if you haven't already.

I don't think I know everything and I don't think that I personally am above slave labour- I think that I CAN think and so I should, and that the way these things are approached in modern society can be damaging to anyone- I don't want to see ANYONE running themselves physically and emotionally ragged to barely afford an apartment and food and internet {including you, if that's your case}. Not even being merely above the poverty line is enough. No one should work that hard and give up that much of their life a week and not make enough to live in comfort. It wouldn't bother me if hard working fast food workers could afford houses next to those of surgeons. {The job of the surgeon is more important than the job of a fast food worker- but as long as there are people demanding there must be ff workers and as long as they are giving up as much of their lives and labour, what more are they supposed to give and why should they be punished for filling a role that people currently demand be filled?}. I don't care if my parents and their parents did it before me. Struggling to get by isn't some axiom to be obeyed, it's something humans wrote into law, and it's something that can be unwritten. This is known, consciously or subconsciously, by many.

But in interviews you have to be like yes! I love doing This and am The Best at it and I wouldn't want it Any other Way.

I think that's the angle, rather than thinking they're just Above Any Work.

i hate applying for jobs because the employers are always like: do you enjoy working in a stressful environment???? do you strive for unobtainable standards of perfection???? are you good at dealing with people that make you feel extremely uncomfortable??? do you mind losing real hours of your life in order to make minimum wage?? are you a fan of capitalism??? do you love selling your soul just so you can afford to live???
