Imagine if Arthur had also been keeping a diary this whole time. It'd have been all "Jack Jack Jack Jack" and from the 29th on he'd have to be like ~Dr John Seward~
I quite like the idea that Arthur has been keeping a diary this entire time, only Mina didn't include it with the documents for some reason. Possible reasons include:
His spelling is appalling and his handwriting is illegible, so it would be too much effort to type up.
It is so embarrassingly soppy about literally everyone that even Mina I-heart-my-husband-forever Harker thought that it was a bit much to share.
It is extremely explicit and makes it very clear that Arthur and Lucy did not wait until marriage before getting it on, and in fact did so at every possible opportunity.
It's full of unprintable and defamatory bitchy gossip about the entire upper crust of British society.
Literally the entire thing about about his dogs, like "Thinking about breeding Rascal to Scamper. Will need to wait for Scamper's hurt paw to heal, though. The veterinarian thinks this may need to be Scamper's final pregnancy, but Tibbles should have her first season soon so we'll be able to continue the bloodline there. Mr Snuggles on excellent form. Puddle caught three rats this afternoon. Stocks up 2% since Wednesday. VH says Lucy may be a vampire."

“Okay guys, let’s wrap up for today. Both teams did great!” The coach called and everyone got out of their positions, stretching out the tense muscles and walking out of court. “Nuh uh, minus you two Juyeon and Y/N.” He called again making you stop in your tracks. “You’re gonna take the volleyballs and net to the equipment room and pump up the basketballs. That’s what you get for arguing and swearing at each other every five minutes even during practice.”
You cursed under your breath sending a death glare towards Juyeon, who just looked at you expressionless. ‘Stupid son of a bitch.’
The coach left the court with the remaining of your team mates that waved at you from afar. You waved back and went to collect the scattered balls letting the boy get the net, since he was taller.
“If you weren’t so annoying, I could be going to my dorm right now.” He said when you walked past him on your way to the equipment room. You thought in giving a rude reply but bit your tongue not to curse back at him, already feeling your blood boil. “I'm talking to you.” You turned on your heel to face him.
“What do you mean? It’s your fault! You were throwing the ball too far for me to catch it in time!” You snarled.
“Isn’t it the whole point? Make the ball touch the floor on your adversary's side? I think you're just complaining because you're not that good of a player." Juyeon had just finished getting the net out of the first pole and glared at you with a raised brow. He really was getting under your skin.
"For your information, I'm the second best in the female team. I just can't deal with bullshit coming from a jerk like you."
Fuming, you turned your back again, walking away to fight back the temptation of throwing one of the balls in your arms directly at his annoying handsome face. Juyeon knew exactly how to get on your nerves and you couldn't stand having to be in the same room with him for too long without getting annoyed or bickering.
You were looking into the lockers searching for a second air pump, since there wasn't any other way and you had to pump up the balls, the best option was to you two do it separately so you could go home as soon as possible. While you were at it Juyeon entered the equipment room bringing the net and you quickly thought of a way to get yourself out of that situation.
"Here, the air pump." You handed him the object, to which he accepted but kept looking at you puzzled. "I didn't find another one, so, you do it."
"And what you're gonna do?"
"Go home!? What else do you expect me to do? Blow out the balls like they're balloons?" Your eyes rolled at how he scoffed at you, arms crossing in front of your body.
"I mean, I know something else you'd like to blow." A cheeky grin grew on his lips and past scenes of his dick on your mouth flashed through your mind.
“Shut the fuck up, will you? You’re so fucking annoying.” You raised your voice taking the boy aback for a moment, your jaw clenched and brows furrowed. “I can’t even stand looking at y-"
The words died at your throat as Juyeon dropped the air pump to grab your jaw firmly, pushing you up against the nearest wall. He was close, his tall figure towering over yours as he looked down at you with dark eyes.
“If you want to yell at me so bad, then I'll give you a reason to do so.” He muttered through gritted teeth and you could feel he was getting mad as well.
“Fuck you.” You scoffed trying to masquerade the fact that your heart was beating fast.
“Oh, you just did on semi-finals night, darling.” Juyeon let go of your face to brush his knuckles against the skin of your cheek, trailing south till it reached the side of your neck. You wished you didn’t shiver at the light touch, making it obvious to him that you enjoyed it. “Speaking of which, where have you been these past weeks? Were you too busy with that asshole from the basketball team?”
You didn’t even notice when you started to hold your breath but you were already feeling intoxicated by the low tone of his voice, knowing exactly what he was implying. His longs fingers wrapping around your throat not helping at all, and you thanked the sound of your racing heart wasn’t audible.
“Why? Jealous much?” It took everything in you to let that out in a disinterested voice, sticking to an attitude not to let him win in any circumstance.
“C'mon, doll, you know I'd never date you; this is just for the fun. You’re just someone to hook up with.” He took a step closer, few inches away to press his body against yours. His skin was still glistening from the after practice sweat and you could almost say he looked hot, even though your mouth told otherwise.
“And that’s all you can get after all. You’re good in bed but you’re as charming as a rock. No surprise you’re single.” Juyeon quirked a brow, his eyes dark as ever.
“Aw, you’re not attracted to me? Yeah, keep lying to yourself, darling. This is the most fun you can have besides taking your clothes off, isn’t it?” His breath fanned at your lips as the grip on your throat tightened, making him chuckle when a small moan dared to scape you. “Gosh, I really missed your pretty little pussy swallowing my dick and you screaming my name.”
You hated Juyeon to the moon and back with your whole being. He was arrogant, full of himself and egocentric, but what you hated the most was the fact that he knew how to touch you and make you feel things in a way you’d never experienced before, and you’d never admit that out loud. You'd never admit to his face how you also missed him pounding into you while you hooked up with other guys.
It was hard to recall when or even how you two started having this type of relationship, an 'enemies with benefits' kind you could say, because you clearly weren’t friends at all. You would pay not to have to spend the practice time looking at his face, and Juyeon would rather die than bumping into you in the hallways.
But both couldn’t deny the sexual tension, and maybe that’s what led you to it, or maybe that was only a tactic to release stress, and you just happened to be there for each other. What’s a better way to calm your nerves than fucking your enemy? The sex was great after all and you couldn’t name any other boy who has ever made you cum so hard. Perhaps the hate towards each other really did add fuel to the fire and made things more interesting, competing who could make the other orgasm the fastest.
"I hate you so much." You said trying not to moan again when Juyeon pressed his torso against yours, sneaking his knee between your thighs, to which you rolled your hips grinding down on it.
"It's reciprocal, I just like to fuck you dumb." His hands went to your waist, grabbing hard and pulling you more into him. You were already melting at the tip of his fingers and didn't think twice before crashing your lips together and tugged at his hair with force as he moved his leg to cause more friction on your core. His big hands roaming all over your body roughly and squeezing your ass. A hiss came out of Juyeon's lips when you scratched his back underneath the shirt, sure to leave red marks. "Don't start a game you know you're gonna lose."
Juyeon pulled you by the wrist to the old desk to careless bend you over it. You couldn't lie saying you didn't like how everything was rough with him, it made a shiver run down your spine every time he kissed you hard and pulled your hair as you cursed at him digging your nails into his skin. He never cared about whether or not he was leaving bruises on your hips, neck and inner thighs, but neither did you. You secretly enjoyed admiring them later in the mirror.
“Here? Really?”
“It’s not like we haven’t done this before. Plus, everyone left, you can scream all you want.” A hand came down hard on your right ass cheek making you yelp. Another smack on the left side and you winced in pain arching your back. “You look good in the team's uniform, but look even better when I'm filling you up.”
He massaged your ass before harshly pulling your tight shorts down to your ankles and you stepped out of them, feeling his hands travel up your legs and holding your hips to press his hard on on your clothed core. You sighed grinding against him, your mind already getting hazy.
The boy brought you up to leave hungry kisses down your neck and bit on the curvature. Your breath hitched when his short nails raked the skin of your belly and you let your head rest on his shoulder, closing your eyes lost in the sensations. “Now tell me, is it still me that makes you sweat? Did you think of me when you were in bed with them?” He growled in your ear biting your lobe, making you grind harder.
“Not even for a second, didn’t even cross my mind.” Lucky you your mouth worked faster than your body so you didn’t dumbly nod agreeing with him. “You’re good but not the best.” You weren’t even ashamed in lying.
Juyeon let out a dark chuckle and grabbed your throat while the other hand squeezed one of your breasts. “We both know I've got a hotter touch, a better fuck than any guy you’ll ever meet. Or else you wouldn’t be coming back begging for my cock whenever you feel horny.”
“You wish.”
“Then why are you still here?” He teased licking your neck and smirked when you shuddered.
“Didn’t you say you missed my pussy? Then fuck me already.” You huffed impatient to which his only answer was to rub circles in your clit over your damp underwear. Juyeon pushed you back to bend over the desk, quickly and roughly pulling your panties down that you’d had stumbled if you were standing straight. “You’re gonna rip my panties, you asshole.”
He scoffed, slapping you once again. “You didn’t complain the other times I did.” His hand palmed himself through the shorts while the other went to your core, fingers playing with your wet folds. You whimpered when he slid one digit inside and added a second right after already moving, making your back arch. “Think I need to remind you that you’re just a fuck toy, not some porcelain doll. They must’ve treated you so nicely, but you like it rough, don’t you?”
Juyeon removed his fingers from you and pulled his own shorts down just enough to free his member and teased your slit with the tip, making you bite your lip in anticipation. Your breath got cut short when he gripped your waist and pushed in in one quick thrust, his cock disappearing into your warmth and your pussy clenched at the feeling of every inch of him stretching you open.
He didn't give you time to even take a deep breath and started moving in a fast pace, grabbing your hips with force. You could feel your whole body getting hot, sweat starting to form on your temples, skin prickling. "How someone so annoying like you have a pussy so good?" He groaned giving a hard, sharp thrust making you gasp and lifted your right leg to put over the desk. You were there so open for him; bent over that he could do anything. And you enjoyed every part of it.
Breathy moans were leaving your lips mixing with obscene wet sounds from your dripping cunt and his hips slamming yours recklessly now, going deeper and deeper inside you. Juyeon was holding you so strong and digging his nails in your skin that you were sure it'd leave bruises. "F-fuck, Juyeon!" You screamed out when he pulled almost all of his length out just to pushed it back in with a quick motion. He smirked to himself and kept repeating it, just to see you writhe and lose your mind.
His hand pulled your ponytail to which you winced but couldn't contain a moan. Your knuckles were turning white holding onto the desk for dear life as Juyeon completely rammed into you. "Not so talkative right now, huh?" He grabbed both your arms, pinning them behind your back with his own hands. "Look at you clenching so desperately. Gonna cum on my cock like a good slut?" His voice was low, watching your whole body shake as you approached your high, loud and breathy sounds escaping your lips.
You came crying out his name, shaking violently and trying to roll your hips back to get more of him. Juyeon pulled out slowly, feeling your walls fluttering and you whimpered at the emptiness. Even though you were sensitive, Juyeon's dick was so good that it never failed to make you want more and more.
A last sigh left you before you got pushed to your knees facing his cock. "Now be the good little slut and you are and put this mouth to a better use."

Did Sam have to sign the Accords when he and the other Secret Avengers got pardoned? I think he would have had to as a condition of being a government contractor.
Okay, I realise this might not be the answer you were looking for but I haven't done a thorough meta on Sam for some time. I think someone asked me previously about Sam's characterisation being different in TFATWS and I've now had a good think and...yes, I'd agree.
Sam, like Bucky, had very limited dialogue prior to TFATWS, but like Bucky, he had character defining moments within those few lines. His introduction in CATWS was just as significant as Bucky's reintroduction. Where Bucky's story mirrored Steve's, Sam's story is a parallel but Sam's actually a few steps ahead of Steve in his life. TFATWS chooses to ignore most of what pre-existing canon has said about Sam, in particular his moral values, just as it did for Bucky.
If you loved Sam's characterisation in TFATWS and cannot tolerate any critical analysis of the way he was written in TFATWS, please stop reading, you have been warned.
And sorry guys for the super long post...
In CATWS, Sam connects with Steve by recognising that Steve was still carrying the war with him. This leads to the group session, where Sam discusses how to carry that trauma. The following discussion, where Sam reveals his loss of Riley, is the moment Steve recognises their very similar experience of losing their partners in battle. They then go on to have this exchange:
Sam: I had a really hard time finding a reason to be over there, you know. Steve: You happy now, back in the world? Sam: The number of people giving me orders is down to about zero, so hell yeah.
Two things here: Sam admits that with the loss of Riley, he lost the reason to continue fighting and this made Steve reflect on whether he wanted to keep fighting with Bucky gone. I'm not saying this with a Stucky lens: Steve looked so stumped that Sam asked if he's also looking at getting out. It's also important to note that Steve recognises Sam is further ahead in the recovery than he is, and asks Sam if there's happiness down the track. I'm not going to spend too much time on this point, but veteran trauma was a big part of Sam's introduction, both as something that made him more compassionate and stronger, and as something that drastically changed his life path. This aspect is omitted for the entirety of TFATWS.
But the bigger character moment here is Sam saying he's happy no one can give him orders. We're never given the reason Sam quit the military, but a recurring theme (prior to TFATWS) is his cynicism when it comes to authority, which suggests that he a) understands that power can be abused, and b) no longer wants to fight battles someone else picks for him.
Personally, I think this is a more defining trait for Sam than the (?fanon) belief that he is a cheerful optimistic level-headed peacemaker. Yes, Sam reasons with Steve a few times when it comes to Bucky -- "he doesn't know you", "(he'd do it for you) 1945 maybe" -- he's playing devil's advocate because he knows Steve can't be objective about Bucky.
Everywhere else though? Sam's just as ready to give a middle finger to selfish leaders and broken organisations as Steve is. While Sam is fairly optimistic about people, he has a stubborn cynical streak when it comes to organisations.
See this exchange when Sam signs up with Steve:
Steve: So how do the two most wanted people in Washington kidnap a SHIELD officer in broad daylight. Sam: (throws down his file like a gauntlet) The answer is you don't.
Or this better remembered exchange when Steve firmly tells Fury that SHIELD can't be salvaged:
Steve: How many paid the price before you did? Fury: Look, I didn't know about Barnes. Steve: Even if you had, would you have told me? Or would you have compartmentalized that, too? S.H.I.E.L.D., HYDRA, it all goes. Sam: Don't look at me. I do what he does, just slower.
The other two people in the room are Maria and Natasha, who by nature of their knowledge and their background would rightly be wary about trying to salvage SHIELD.
But Sam, the ex-military vet, unequivocally taking Steve's side? Firstly, he shelters Steve and Nat when they confess they're being hunted by "everyone", even before he knew what was going on. At no point does he doubt or question Steve's motives. Secondly, Sam offers to break the law and kidnap a federal officer based on a brief conversation he heard between - sure, two famous Avengers - two people he had just met. Thirdly, as Steve says, Sam "had gotten out for a reason", but a fight against a corrupt government agency was enough to convince Sam to take up arms. And fourth, Sam says “I do what he does” immediately after Steve questions Fury about compartmentalisation and military veterans paying the price. I don’t think the placement of Sam’s line is accidental - it’s very likely that he’s had first hand experience of these same issues, either before or in relation to Riley’s death.
Something - we may never know but this is the story that Sam deserved to tell - has happened to turn a passionately patriotic and optimistic man like Sam into one deeply distrustful of government authority, to the point that he was ready to lay down his life for a near-stranger against a government that he had fought for only a few years ago.
Let's move onto the Sokovian Accords discussion in CACW.
Rhodes: Secretary Ross has a Congressional Medal of Honor, which is one more than you have. Sam: So let's say we agreed to this thing. How long is it gonna be before they lojack us like a bunch of common criminals? Rhodes: 117 countries wanna sign this. 117, Sam, and you're just like, "Nah, it's cool." Sam: How long are you gonna play both sides?
Firstly, low blow Rhodes, and Ross has a long history of unethical dealings so the congressional medal means nothing. Secondly - look at Sam's prescience; within days everything happened exactly as he predicted. It started with they need to report to the UN and ended with Scott and Clint going under house arrest for years while the rest went on the run. Thirdly, Sam has no qualms in calling out Rhodes' hypocrisy in playing for both sides, just as he mocks Tony's hypocrisy later in the movie when Tony asks for the Siberian location.
Sam knew this was the way things would play out because rules are often made by powerful people to benefit themselves. Is it his previous experience with the military or his experience as an African American? Either way, what is clear throughout CATWS and CACW is Sam does not trust authority figures because he predicts (correctly) they will inevitably abuse their power. It is also clear that Sam takes no bullshit, whether that's from allies like Rhodes, adversaries like T'Challa or Tony, or enemies like Rumlow. And finally, Sam understands and cares strongly about veteran trauma because he has had first-hand experience, and he had poured his energy into supporting others like himself.
Final warning if you can't take any criticism of TFATWS’s portrayal of Sam, CLICK [X] AND EXIT THIS PAGE.
So how do we reconcile this Sam, who took over a year of persuasion from Steve to even agree to signing up with the Avengers - another group of authoritative figures who could potentially abuse their power - with the guy who appears at the start of TFATWS killing Libyans (or French?) in Tunisia for the American military? How do we reconcile the Sam who staunchly opposed the Accords with the Sam who is gunning for the same military that put him in the Raft? I don't know.
How do we reconcile the Sam calling Rhodes out for arguing for both sides, with the Sam who tells Karli he agrees with her cause then carries her body down into a street filled with the American military and NYPD? How do we reconcile the Sam who took no compromises in a three-man revolution against SHIELD, with the Sam who compromises with the GRC by giving a speech that spoke nothing of specifics, and compromises with the US government by getting a statue but no recompense for Isaiah's men? How do we reconcile the Sam who passionately throws himself into becoming a counsellor and who gently steers Steve towards recognising the trauma he carries, with the Sam who's unable to acknowledge his own anger or grief over Steve's absence, and who is unable to recognise Bucky's or Walker's military-related traumas? (Because I'm sure someone will come at me, I'm saying "recognise" not "treat" or "accommodate".)
The thing is, Sam - just like Steve - is a BAMF who has no time for BS, and is adept at seeing through powerful organisations trying to manipulate the masses, and he doesn't compromise. While Tony almost talked Steve into signing the Accords, Sam never budged, because he knew what the ramifications of having their freedom compromised means -- a perfect segue into how Sam’s experience as a Black veteran has shaped this view.
The path Steve embarked on in CATWS should have led into a disengagement from the propaganda image of "Captain America". Steve has to realise that to truly represent the core values of truth, freedom and justice, he will need to fight the ultimate battle against institutions buried in America's government that work to ensure these values remain inaccessible to the masses. Just as Sam was a few years ahead of Steve on the trauma recovery path, pre-TFATWS Sam is also a few years ahead of Steve in his recognition and opposition of corrupt institutions.
Unfortunately, the MCU has been acquired by the very corporations Steve and Sam would have been fighting against, and the pro-military/pro-authority undertones of the franchise have...well, become overtones. Sam was allowed to hold anti-authority views as a side character, but as the protagonist in a Disney franchise? His moral stance had to be rewritten to fit Disney's pro-military messaging, and that's a bigger travesty for Sam's character and the Captain America franchise than arguing over whether his advice to Bucky was correct or not.

solitude | fyodor dostoevsky x gn!reader
part 3 of broken, continuation of savior
summary: for the first time in a long time, you're free of fyodor with him in prison. however, you find yourself wondering if this is what you truly want
word count: 1.1k words
contains: stockholm syndrome-ish (depending how you look at it), slight manipulation
anon: Hi ! First, I hope that you’re okay, I wanted to tell you that your work is soooo great, I really support you. Then I wanted to ask you if you could write a part 3 of « broken ». I really loved « broken » and « savior », you are very talented.
a/n: ahh i'm so flattered but thank you !! broken was actually my first fyodor fic so i'm surprised people like it and asked for a sequel. i was kind of on the fence with how to end this series because y/n and fyodor's dynamic is a bit complicated but i hope it came across here!
you're loathe to admit it, but every time you heard a doorbell ring or a knocking on the door, you hope that it's fyodor finally returning home.
it had been more than two weeks since fyodor had enacted his master plan using cannibalism to get the port mafia and armed detective agency to turn against each other. you weren't completely privy to all the details of fyodor's plan or the bigger organization he was working for, but he did let you know that being sent to jail was a part of it.
"you're free to use this space, especially since the special division and armed detective agency are cracking down on the rats of the house of the dead," fyodor told you one night.
"is that so?" you raised an eyebrow at him. "i see you're playing favorites then."
"you've only noticed my favoritism now?" fyodor chuckled. you found it almost funny in hindsight how your relationship had evolved from him manipulating you to playful banter between the two of you.
"you won't be seeing me for a long time," he hummed, absentmindedly twirling a piece of your hair with his index finger. it had become a habit of his that you didn't find entirely unwelcome. "should i leave you a little souvenir so you don't miss me?"
"you're already leaving me your place," you scoffed, waving a hand at him. "that's enough. i have to lay low for the next couple of weeks too."
"that would be advisable," fyodor nodded, letting go of your hair and sitting a little farther from you on the sofa. you hated that you almost wanted to move a little closer. "i've made sure to take care of my tracks. they shouldn't inspect this place."
"alright," you said, paused, before adding "thank you."
the next morning, he was gone before you even woke up. aside from the emptiness of the apartment, you were left with an ambiguously melancholic feeling.
now, he was gone and you had more than enough room to breathe. if you wanted to, you could even finally run away after making sure the coast was clear. but you had already established a while ago that there was more benefit to you staying with fyodor.
maybe the decision you were grappling with was whether or not you actually missed fyodor.
'impossible,' you thought, physically shaking your head as if trying to correct yourself. and despite what you told yourself, there could only be one explanation as to why you frequented fyodor's study so much and took care to wipe his cello case clean every night.
in fact, you began staying in the study more often each day. the desk was as neat as fyodor had left it with his laptop and several files and books stacked neatly on the table. one book in particular, caught your eye.
"the complete collection of t.s. eliot poems," you read aloud. suddenly, you remembered one of the first time you and fyodor had talked in the library, back when you were just a college student and he was just a handsome stranger.
of course, you could tell that the placement of this book could only be deliberate. "of course you'd leave something for me," you spoke out loud, as if he could hear. carefully, you opened the book and found a space neatly cut into the middle of the pages and a flash drive embedded inside.
...
"well, if this isn't quite ironic."
fyodor doesn't look surprised at all to see you standing in front of his jail cell. in fact, it looks as if he had been patiently waiting for you all this time. and that's because he has.
"you couldn't have left your escape plans in a more obvious place?" you sighed at him.
"but that was obvious," fyodor blinked innocently at you. "i knew you would find it at the right time."
did he know you'd be spending most of your time in his study? it was embarrassing to be known that well but you read intently through the plans he had encoded in the flash drive. you couldn't believe what fyodor was asking of you this time because surely he overestimated your abilities.
"couldn't you have asked someone else, someone more capable, to do this for you?" you asked him.
"what for? i have complete confidence in you," fyodor smiled. he was dressed in the white clothes all the other prisoners wore. you could tell that he had lost quite a bit of weight due to his stay and both of his hands were cuffed. and yet, he looked absolutely delighted at seeing you.
and that gave you a deep sense of satisfaction.
you pressed a hand to the bulletproof glass of his jail cell. "remember that night? when you broke me out of jail?"
"of course i do," fyodor hummed, leaning back and closing his eyes as he savored the memory. "that was sloppy work on your part. anyone could tell that you had an ulterior motive to get yourself caught."
"yeah, yeah. i'm aware," you rolled your eyes.
"ah, but look at you now," fyodor cocked his head. 'you've changed,' was on the tip of his tongue and you could only agree. even if fyodor wrote up the plans for his escape, you were still the one who snuck into the facility and incapacitated more than a few security guards to break him out.
who would have thought this is where you'd end up?
you keyed in the passcode on the door before stepping inside the jail cell. fyodor held his cuffed wrists out to you and you sighed and crouched down in front of him.
"you couldn't have at least picked the lock on your cuffs?"
"i'd rather you do it for me," fyodor smiled at you.
you didn't even need to be told twice. he was the one who had taught you this skill after all and your fingers worked quickly at the lock. of course, you were aware of fyodor intently staring at you and the way his fingers brushed at the inside of your wrist. finally, the lock clicked open and his metal cuffs fell away.
"finally. they tightened those a bit too much," fyodor sighed, rubbing the red marks on his wrists.
"you must have said something to offend them, like always," you emphasized.
"how was i to know they were going to be offended?" he scoffed as the two of you practically strolled out of the jail cell and into the hallway. "i assume you've been enjoying your time alone at the apartment."
"the silence was definitely a plus. although admittedly..." you trailed off and caught fyodor's glance. "i do miss the sound of your playing."
"is that so?" he chuckled amusedly and flexed his wrists. "i'm out of practice but, i think i can arrange something for you when we get home."
you nodded with a bemused smile on your face. "when we get home."

Zuko & Katara's Relationship Dynamic
This is like the third or fourth time I've tried to write up this post so please bare with me.
Oh wow. That video. Hopefully everyone has seen it now. Not only did it articulate arguments I've been making for years, but it also brought up ideas I had never thought of or noticed before. Watching that and watching the second half of Book 3 again (because it's my favorite) made me want to redo my zutara dynamic post.
I'm going to be using the tiny bits and pieces the show gave us to see how Zuko and Katara's relationship looks and how it would look if they gave us more because...Bryke really fucking hated zutara. I mean, I guess they did.
Katara is compassionate; Zuko is empathetic
Tumblr media
A lot of anti-zutara arguments have said that Zuko and Katara could never be together because they would constantly fight and hate each other and it end sooner than later. Not only does this actually describe maiko, but that argument would need to ignore the characters' actual character.
One of Katara's biggest character traits is how compassionate she is. She has a drive to help others and ease their pain. Whether it's getting Aang out of the iceberg or healing a Fire Nation fishing village, Katara will go out of her way to help someone in need.
Katara: No. I will never ever turn my back on people who need me.
Zuko is very emotional and passionate person. As much as he tried to hide it to appease his father, Zuko does want to open up and connect with people. Unfortunately, aside from his uncle, most of the other people he knows are like Zhao and Azula. Not the most understanding of crowds. But because of this he can pick up what people are really thinking and feeling. Think of it as a defense mechanism he developed growing up around people like Azula.
Tumblr media
Get these two kinds of people together and you get the crystal catacombs scene. Katara lashes out at Zuko until she breaks down. When she does Zuko opens up with empathy since they have something in common. This creates the beginning of an understanding between the two. Zuko uses that to finally open up to someone who isn't his uncle and Katara listens and reaches out to help. Contrast to the first episode of Book 3 when Zuko tries to voice his thoughts and concerns to Mai and she...doesn't really care.
Something similar happens during The Southern Raiders. Zuko figures out that Katara is taking out her anger of being separated from her father by The Fire Nation onto him and even connecting her mother's death to him.
It's not the first time Zuko has done this either. He easily figured out that Sokka was planning on going to The Boiling Rock. He does it again during Sozin's Comet when he tells Katara that Aang needs to figure out what to do about Ozai by himself.
There's a noticeable pattern of behavior by the time Sozin's Comet arrives. Zuko voices his concerns about meeting his uncle again and Katara is right there to help him through it.
Zuko's empathy combined with Katara's compassion creates almost a cycle of understanding and emotional vulnerability that the two can't really get with anyone else. One notices the other having concerns or problems and goes to give comfort by words or by actions.
Zuko still has a temper but so does Katara
Tumblr media
Even after Zuko's fever dream character change thing, even after The Day of Black Sun, he still has it in him to yell at anyone who commits even the slightest transgressions against him:
Aang: That one felt kinda hot. Zuko: Don't patronize me. You know what it's supposed to look like. Aang: Sorry, sifu hotman. Zuko: And stop calling me that!
Sokka: So all we have to do is make Zuko angry. Easy enough. *pokes him with his sword* *annoying laugh* Zuko: All right! Cut it out!
Maybe it's the firebender in him or maybe he really is just like that. Basically if you annoy him, he'll let you know. What people sometimes overlook is that while it takes Katara a bit longer, she also gets worked up when people upset her.
Tumblr media
Toph: What's the matter? Can't handle some dirt, Madame Fussy Britches? Katara: Oh, sorry, did I splash you, mud slug?
And remember, it was Katara getting angry at Sokka that even broke the iceberg that revealed Aang.
Katara: Ugh, I'm embarrassed to be related to you! Ever since Mom died I've been doing all the work around camp while you've been off playing soldier! Sokka: Uh... Katara? Katara: I even wash all the clothes! Have you ever smelled your dirty socks? Let me tell you, NOT PLEASANT! Sokka: Katara! Settle down! Katara: No, that's it. I'm done helping you. From now on, you're on your own!
The point is that it is both Zuko and Katara that are very passionate and emotional people. One of them isn't emotionally dominating the other because they both wear their emotions on their sleeves.
This also comes in to play when they set goals for themselves. When Zuko sets a goal, he puts everything into it. Katara is the same way. The difference is that Zuko's drive sometimes gives him a one-track mind while Katara is more flexible. Like for example Zuko being so focused on finding Aang before Sozin's Comet that he ignores Toph's story about her childhood versus Katara wanting to go to the North Pole but taking time to stop and help whoever they come across.
This passion also fuels their values and how strongly they stand by their beliefs. I already put The Painted Lady quote up above but Zuko's morality is what is making him so angry at himself during The Beach. He knows what he did was wrong, but he couldn't face it yet.
Sometimes their emotions get the better of them, but it's only because they are passionate about what they're doing.
Their natural teamwork is amazing
Tumblr media
I can't provide a lot of clues in this bit because it's more of a visual thing. Just consider how flawlessly their plans worked during their attack on The Southern Raiders. Especially when you consider that it was a stealth mission so they barely even said anything to each other during and it still went incredibly well.
You could see it again during their mock battle with The Melon Lord. Sokka must have noticed because he paired them together to deliver some "liquidy-hot offence." And they pulled it off, again, without having to say anything.
They've only been a team for a few weeks(?), days(?) but they act as if they've been doing it for years.
They trust each other's judgment
Tumblr media
Piggybacking of the previous point, Zuko and Katara have only been a team for a while but there seems to be a level of understanding in terms of judgement. They both know that whatever the other chooses is going to be a well-thought out decision. Maybe it's because they see each other as the mature members of the group even though Sokka is the same age as Zuko? I don't know.
Aang disappears right before they embark on their fight against the Fire Lord, and out of nowhere, Katara puts Zuko in charge.
Zuko: Get out of the bison's mouth, Sokka. We have a real problem here. Aang is nowhere to be found and the comet is only two days away. Katara: What should we do Zuko? Zuko: I don't know. Why are you all looking at me? Katara: Well, you are kind of the expert on tracking Aang.
and that wasn't the first time in that episode that she went along with one of Zuko's decisions
Katara: Aang, don't walk away from this. *She begins to walk towards him as a hand touches her shoulder to stop her from doing so.* Zuko: Let him go. He needs time to sort it out by himself.
As a lot of people have pointed out during the entirety of The Southern Raiders, Zuko never gives a suggestion on what he thinks Katara should do. Aside from making it a stealth mission, he follows her lead the entire way.
Katara teases Zuko (and he lets her)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fun one. This one has two parts: pre and post The Southern Raiders.
Before The Southern Raiders, Katara was tolerating Zuko. She was still angry with him about the betrayal at Ba Sing Se. Getting little jabs at him was the only thing that was really helping her from loosing her cool around him.
Katara: I'm sorry. I'm just laughing at the irony. You know... how it would have been nice for us if you lost your firebending a long time ago? Zuko: Well it's not lost. It's just weaker for some reason. Katara: Maybe you're just not as good as you think you are. Toph: Ouch.
He just finished yelling at Aang and Sokka but all he does is glare at Katara. She does it again, but to be fair, he kind of set himself up for it.
Zuko: It's a sacred form that happens to be thousands of years old! Katara: Oh yeah? What's your little form called? Zuko: ...The Dancing Dragon.
Then comes post The Southern Raiders and...yeah, she's still picking on him and he still lets her. Granted it's a lot more playful this time around.
Zuko: They make me totally stiff and humorless. Katara: Actually, I think that actor's pretty spot on. Zuko: How could you say that? Actor Uncle: Let's forget about the Avatar and get massages. Actor Zuko: How could you say that?! (Cut back to Katara wearing a satisfied grin on her face and she looks to an expressionless Zuko as he slouches in his seat.)
I love pointing it out every time. She teases him and he does nothing about it.
Katara: Er, no. I was looking for cooking pots in the attic and I found this. Look at baby Zuko! Isn't he cute? Oh lighten up, I was just teasing.
And she admits it!
-
So what can we take away from this? From what little time they were given together (thanks, Bryke) it seems that Zuko and Katara really understand each other on an intimate emotional level. They can sense when the other is distressed and offer comfort. They're both passionate in and out of combat, for better or for worse. They're comfortable with each other as if they've known each other for years even though it's such a short time. Katara also likes to add a little bit of playfulness in there with Zuko letting her have her fun, again, showing how comfortable they are with each other.
I do think their relationship could have gone to romantic sooner than later if you would have given it a bit more time. Like first half of a hypothetical Book 4.
To me, at least.

soo im not sure if you ever answered this before but who do you think had a stronger connection ron and hermione or harry and ron? i've seen you answer this only between harry/hermione and harry/ron and also harry/hermione and ron/hermione but sorry if i missed something
I don’t think either had a stronger connection to Ron because they’re different.
Like, it could be argued that in the first three books Harry was closer particularly since they were a unit before Hermione, she wasn’t even a friend of theirs at first and they found her incredibly annoying
‘I couldn’t help overhearing what you and Malfoy were saying –‘ ‘Bet you could, Ron muttered. ‘– and you mustn’t go wandering around the school at night, think of the points you’ll lose Gryffindor if you’re caught, and you’re bound to be. It’s really very selfish of you.’ ‘And it’s really none of your business,’ said Harry.
and in Prisoner of Azkaban as I keep mentioning, neither he nor Harry talk to her and they seem perfectly fine with that
Hermione, who remained convinced that she had acted for the best, started avoiding the common room. Harry and Ron supposed she had taken refuge in the library and didn't try to persuade her to come back.
although even when they aren’t speaking, Ron still keeps track of Hermione’s movements and notices that she’s taking too many classes while Harry doesn’t really care to explore that or find that interesting:
"How's she doing it?" Ron muttered to Harry one evening as Harry sat finishing a nasty essay on Undetectable Poisons for Snape. Harry looked up. Hermione was barely visible behind a tottering pile of books.
                           "Doing what?"
"Getting to all her classes!" Ron said. "I heard her talking to Professor Vector, that Arithmancy witch, this morning. They were going on about yesterday's lesson, but Hermione can't've been there, because she was with us in Care of Magical Creatures! And Ernie McMillan told me she's never missed a Muggle Studies class, but half of them are at the same time as Divination, and she's never missed one of them either!"
Harry didn't have time to fathom the mystery of Hermione's impossible schedule at the moment
but when Ron thinks that Crookshanks killed Scabbers, Harry aligns himself with Ron
Personally, Harry was sure that Crookshanks had eaten Scabbers, and when he tried to point out to Hermione that the evidence all pointed that way, she lost her temper with Harry too.
"Okay, side with Ron, I knew you would!" she said shrilly. "First the Firebolt, now Scabbers, everything's my fault, isn't it! Just leave me alone, Harry, I've got a lot of work to do!"
and even when Harry feels bad for Hermione, he still aligns himself with Ron
"Can't you give her a break?" Harry asked Ron quietly.
"No," said Ron flatly. "If she just acted like she was sorry -- but she'll never admit she's wrong, Hermione. She's still acting like Scabbers has gone on vacation or something."
The Gryffindor party ended only when Professor McGonagall turned up in her tartan dressing gown and hair net at one in the morning, to insist that they all go to bed. Harry and Ron climbed the stairs to their dormitory, still discussing the match.
"Harry!" said a voice in his right ear. Harry started and looked around at Hermione, who was sitting at the table right behind them and clearing a space in the wall of books that had been hiding her.
"Harry, if you go into Hogsmeade again...I'll tell Professor McGonagall about that map!" said Hermione.
"Can you hear someone talking, Harry?" growled Ron, not looking at Hermione.
"Ron, how can you let him go with you? After what Sirius Black nearly did to you! I mean it, I'll tell --"
"So now you're trying to get Harry expelled!" said Ron furiously. "Haven't you done enough damage this year?"
Hermione opened her mouth to respond, but with a soft hiss, Crookshanks leapt onto her lap. Hermione took one frightened look at the expression on Ron's face, gathered up Crookshanks, and hurried away toward the girls' dormitories.
"So how about it?" Ron said to Harry as though there had been no interruption. "Come on, last time we went you didn't see anything. You haven't even been inside Zonko's yet!"
Harry looked around to check that Hermione was well out of earshot.
"Okay," he said. "But I'm taking the Invisibility Cloak this time."
Like there is very much a male camaraderie, BFF vibe between Harry and Ron that whether they know it or not could be argued takes precedence over either of their relationships to Hermione.
But the moment that attraction and romantic feelings become more apparent and more involved, the Romione connection evolves and Hermione starts to mean something different to Ron and while friendship is at the core of their connection, it’s an emotional intimacy between the two of them that’s necessarily different than Harry’s connection to him and while I’ve mentioned before that Ron and Hermione had a way of communicating with each other that always excluded Harry even in the first three books, there are more dimensions to that the older they get and it’s shown in their physicality, particularly in the Deathly Hallows
Her arm curved to the floor, her fingers inches from Ron's. Harry wondered whether they had fallen asleep holding hands. The idea made him feel strangely lonely.
Tumblr media
"Wait," said Bellatrix sharply. "All except.... except for the Mudblood."
Greyback gave a grunt of pleasure.
"No!" shouted Ron. "You can have me, keep me!"
Hermione gave a weak smile as Ron gave her a one-armed squeeze.
Hermione took the chair beside the dressing table; Ron sat on the arm.
but even before that like in Half-Blood Prince
Ron, he saw, was now holding Hermione and stroking her hair while she sobbed into his shoulder, tears dripping from the end of his own long nose
and of course
"Then the poisoner didn't know Slughorn very well," said Hermione, speaking for the first time in hours and sounding as though she had a bad head cold. "Anyone who knew Slughorn would have I known there was a good chance he'd keep something that tasty for himself."
"Er-my-nee," croaked Ron unexpectedly from between them
Everyone else had spoken and he didn’t repeat their names but she speaks and he naturally responds to her
so I don’t think the two are really comparable, I think they both also strengthen over time but differently.

The Rest That’s Still Unwritten - pt. 2 (Of Hats and Bandages)
Read it on AO3
Fandom: Bungo Stray Dogs
Characters: Dazai, Chuuya
Summary: Dazai wakes up from flying through half a forest, and Chuuya sees something he shouldn't have. Things go from there.
Notes: Follow-up to part one featuring Book!Dazai, and that should really be read first. Warnings apply for Dazai-typical suicide references. Can be taken as pre-relationship or gen.
...
Dazai is still preoccupied with the sensation of air burning back into his lungs, too preoccupied at first to notice the way that being thrown back like that through the trees that he could still remember catching at his arms and legs had affected him.
He groans, a hand reaching (painfully, and oh but he hates this, because he hadn't planned on being thrown through the forest like that again any time soon) for his forehead, thankful that there isn't any sign of bleeding coming from his head, or having come from there at all.
(His neck hurts, he thinks, and ah, so that's what did it. It's a statement of fact, and a little bit disappointed at that, that it didn't work, but then again he supposes there are still things to do, the story isn't over yet.)
He hears a sharp inhale of breath, and he tenses, because maybe Chuuya already knows about the fact that he can't stay dead, but that doesn't mean he enjoys someone being that close to the truth of who (what) he is.
He's ready to put the masks back on, wave in Chuuya's face and make a nuisance of himself, when-
"Dazai," he hears Chuuya say, in the exact same low tone that's threatening not to stay level as he'd heard the first time Chuuya had seen him die and come back to life, "what the fuck?"
And that's familiar, too.
Dazai's hand drops from his face, and it's then that he realise that he can feel air touching directly onto his skin, instead of having the constant barrier of bandages wrapped around his arm, the tug of one frayed end just coming loose from where it was held making it obvious that one of the tree branches must have caught the wrappings and pulled it loose, perhaps even causing his (temporary) death.
He looks up at Chuuya, from the ground, because apparently Chuuya had been the one to get him down, had been about to cut that last bit of bandage free, when he'd seen-
Chuuya had seen-
The world slows down and in an instant, possibilities lay themselves before him, all sorts of potentials for how this might play out, and perhaps once he might not have been afraid, but Dazai is just as much a part of the story now as anyone else, carried along on the pull of its ebbs and flows, and whatever Chuuya chooses-
Whatever he chooses to do, to say, who to go to, Dazai can't stop, can't change, can't-
"That's not- those aren't just scars, that's ink."
-control
"I'd say 'that's some fucked up tattoos you've got there', but they're moving, and... the hell."
anything-
"Dazai?" Chuuya had used that tone before. Each time he had, someone had wound up half dead. "Dazai... why can I see what I'm saying on your arm?"
-at all.
He can't take back what Chuuya's seen. He can only grab at the frayed end of the cut bandage, and hastily wind it back around his arm. He doesn't say a word. Not until he's satisfied that he's properly covered up once more.
And then, expression as blank as one of Kunikida-kun's unused sheets of notebook paper, he turns to meet Chuuya's eyes.
"Why do you think you saw what you saw, Chuuya?'
The smaller man, his ex-partner, huffed and looked away. They'd been on the same side, once, and now they weren't, but at the same time... could he really be said to be on anyone's side, given that he was what he was?
"Hell if I know. Why else would I be asking you, dimwit? The only thing I can think of is that damn Book shit, and there's no way-" Chuuya's eyes narrow, and he looks back. "That thing's stronger than any human ability. Did it do something to you?"
"No," Dazai says, because it's the truth.
The possibilities are narrowing down, which makes focusing on the one that he's living through that much simpler, and less headache-inducing.
Chuuya is still mafia, one of the last ones suggests, loyal to Mori, not you, and even if one doesn't know the full truth about the Book the truth about Dazai's link to it would be enough to override Mori's willingness to simply let him be. It would only take a single misplaced word....
The possibility fades into crumpled up draft paper, and the simple fact that it does causes Dazai to take a sharp breath, and when Chuuya looks at him, a dozen more possibilities are discarded, thrown away.
"You aren't going to tell Mori you saw that," he says, and although it comes out flatly, part of that is because he can barely breathe for not knowing what to do with this information.
"Only because I don't even know what the hell that was," Chuuya says, and sits down hard on the ground in front of him. "Fuck, Dazai. Anything else you wanna... I dunno. Maybe it'd explain a lot if you were somehow the human version of that book. You've both got messed up abilities and you always get everyone around you into trouble."
Dazai closes his eyes. The buzzing in his head from the branching off directions that things could go in quieting down by the second.
"You're supposed to laugh, you know." Instead, a sigh is what escapes him. "Dazai."
"Maybe I'm still concussed from being thrown through a forest."
"You're not concussed."
"But I could be."
"I've seen you concussed, idiot."
He finds himself smiling, remembering having been knocked unconscious and kept awake by an increasingly annoyed Chuuya by order of Mori. He himself hadn't been all that happy about it - the idea was, after all, that if one fell asleep while concussed, then they might never wake up.
The silence stretches, for a while, and although it's now silent in Dazai's head, it's no less comforting.
Eventually, Chuuya breaks the impasse by snorting, and then, a bitter sort of laugh.
"If you were some human Book... you mind telling me the fuck you thought you were up to a few months ago? Those Detective Agency friends of yours were being hunted down, you got yourself arrested, and I fucking lost people, you bastard-"
Dazai's eyes darkened, and he took ahold of the loose piece of bandage with his other hand. There's still an uncomfortable sensation of looseness there, which he can't do anything about until he can get around to fixing up his entire arm again. It truly is a pain.
"I couldn't control that," he says, absently. Or perhaps, not so much absently, as that he felt that he himself was absent, only hearing himself speak as if from a distance. Chuuya is still staring at him, eyes full of fire. Trying to pull him back down to earth. There's something else in them, too, which he can't put a name to yet, which flashes from the moment he admits that Chuuya's at one point joking suggestion was right. "We're two halves of one whole, after all. The Book, which is written in, that can change the story..."
"...and you," Chuuya finishes, flatly. Which sounds wrong wrong wrong, because Chuuya is never flat. He is short and he is angry and he always has had the best reactions, and none of the ones that Dazai likes (which are most of them) are flat.
He nods, however, with a smile.
"And me," he says, confirming the truth. "I'm what happened when the story in the pages of the Book came alive. Did you know, an author can create a set of characters, traits, ideas... and yet, it is much like expecting a pack of stray dogs to always do as they're asked, if they want to keep a certain storyline on track. Much like anyone, they do as they please." Much like people who aren't fictional, lies unsaid. Unspoken. But if if he looked under the bandages, he isn't completely sure that it lies unwritten. From the disquiet on Chuuya's face, he thinks that despite his partner's comparative shortcomings in the mental intelligence department, he can guess. Probably because he knew Dazai. Dazai, who with dark eyes and numb curiosity, tilts his head. "Do you hate me, Chuuya?"
Chuuya laughs, not looking in Dazai's eyes anymore.
"I've always hated you, dimwit." Ah, of course. And, no one liked to know that their story had been set in stone. That there was someone to blame for everything going wrong. In this case, Dazai himself was the closest any in this world had to that person. "I hate you for a hell of a lot of reasons. But..." Chuuya sounded - tired. Dazai closed his eyes, feeling the decision coming on. "Hating you for this would make me feel like a fucking hypocrite, open-book-dumbass."
His eyes fly open again, and now he's staring, looking at Chuuya like he's never seen him before, because he'd expected to be blamed for all of Chuuya's problems, for knowing or being able to know, and maybe that will still come later, but right now all he's able to do is laugh.
He'd spent all this time comparing the two of them in his mind, and at the very point that it became relevant, it was Chuuya who had the thought come to mind first.
"You're really weird, you know that," Chuuya's saying, but now that he's looking Dazai can see his mouth twitch, meaning that Chuuya's trying not to laugh too-
And then the dam breaks, and it's the two of them, two people who aren't even really people at all, just trying to be as human as possible with what they had, and finally, finally, seeing each other and recognising that.
It's a while before Dazai feels like moving again, and when he does he nearly falls flat on his face. Nearly, because he falls onto Chuuya instead.
"Chuuya... I think I twisted my ankle..." He makes a face. "I twisted my ankle and I need new bandages," he continues with a whine. "The trees stole some, and you helped them, so you owe me now."
"I should deck you and drag you back unconscious just for that," Chuuya says as he drags him upright again, cursing the way Dazai's ability (and although it was, it was also his nature, whether he liked the implications of that or not) made it impossible for Chuuya's own ability to make this any easier. "How'd you even get this far without someone seeing that, anyway?"
"I usually have enough warning to be able to hide it."
"Huh."
"But, it isn't comfortable, so I prefer not to have to."
It's hard not to stare at the site of the destruction that must have occurred after he'd been thrown through the forest (and died, temporarily), and Chuuya had gone to town. It's magnificent, truly, the way that there were small craters and broken trees simply from Chuuya using his ability without any need for Corruption.
The one they'd been fighting was taken care of, of course. Chuuya wouldn't have spent so long out of the battle, even with what had happened.
"...Oi, Dazai." He makes a sound to show that he'd heard, that he was listening, even though he wasn't about to stop watching where his feet were going. "This means you don't get to call me 'hatrack' from now on, got it?"
He blinks, and laughs. He still hurts all over, but it's worth it.
"Ha... only if you stop calling me the 'extra-stuff-that-comes-with-the-bandages'."
"Ugh." A beat. They both knew how likely either of those things were. As in, not at all. "You've got shitty coping mechanisms." Which, to be fair, Chuuya has known for quite some time now. "And no, that's not an invitation to start taking my hats, damn it!"
...Shame, Dazai thinks to himself, Chuuya's hats would probably look good on me.

#have to admit that i've lost track of whether i or someone else has made this joke before
Imagine if Arthur had also been keeping a diary this whole time.
