How can one half-ass a supposedly classic Disney villain? I am still disappointed in this movie. Who knew that the best classic Disney villain in a movie about wishes would be Big Jack Horner from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
If I hadn't seen Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes last week with the character of Dr. Volumnia Gaul, who uses theatrics, and rainbow snakes, to hide their villainy, evil, and cruelty that is more Disney-esque than the actual Disney movie's villain.
I just watched disney's wish, and... I have some thoughts (especially on king Magnifico)
Obviously, SPOILER WARNING
I find it so funny that they didn't give us the backstory for king Magnifico. It's just, oh yeah, my family was murdered and my town ruined, and I learned magic to prevent this from ever happening again. Done? Done. Let's not mention that EVER AGAIN.
He has literally done NOTHING bad before Asha's interruption. He's a stuck-up narcissistic, sure, but he does exactly what he says, keeps wishes safe. Why??? No idea! Because up until he turns big bad (supposedly from his magic book?), he has no use for them! SO, WHY DO THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE.
The movie is not even 1.5 hours long, and yet IT DRAGS ON. And don't even get me started on the "Asha is actually the fairy godmother, and Magnifico is the enchanted mirror because that's some of the LAZIEST writing I have ever seen in my life.
Anyhow, shout out to Alan Tudyk for not being annoying. The second I saw his character, I thought "yup this is going to be the worst part of the movie." He isn't, he's simply alright.
Great success disney. I have an alternative movie title suggestion for you. It's "HEY, REMEMBER, WE MADE THESE OTHER MOVIES TOO? BUY OUR STUFF. "
#imagine this being your big anniversary movie#what a disappointment#wish#wish 2023#king Magnifico#disney wish#disney villains#magnifico#I think I'm going to rewatch Puss in the Boots: the Last wish because that movies actual knows what hell its doing and is morally complex#The magic system in Wish is just beacause and the writers didn't think things through#like Manificio could have been a jackass genni or monkey's paw type wish granter or gone the route of Lotso and his crapsccharine world#Why did this movie bring up the point of not granting wishes that are vague; a question that the movie doesn't wish to answer#the movie makes the statement that there are no bad wishes#have the writers seen other wish granting media of vauge wishes or wishing for someone dead to become alive again#which was brought up in fucking Aladdin by the fucking Genie or wishing for someone to love you#or hell the movie brought that wishes can change; WTF writers what are wishes in this universe are they simple just hopes or aspiration#for life that they could be purpusing themselves like most of their wishes were pretty mundane#and I hate to bring it up but WW84 as shit as it was it have the point of being careful what you wish for you may think you want this thing#however in actuarially you don't; however Wish refuses to engage with ANY of this#To me it feels like King Magnifico in one draft was an anti-hero/anti villain type character who had motivation and a point to why he uses#magic the way that he does;however somewhere in the production like NOPE we need a classic Disney Villain!#Like why include so many damn moments of him being good and rejecting evil in the first place? And then with Queen scene of going like NOPE#irrdeemable EVIL to the audience that scene stood out to me#if anything it reads like not as a classic villain but a corruption arc#So many face palms#It feels like designated villain and I can see the hand of the writers and it doesn't organic and it feels forced#if go over the top shoot for the high heavens in theatric for your damn villain#It feels half asses and half baked concepts; I can see the bones of a good Disney movie but the C-suite rushed this movie out of production#and it SHOWS#This is far the worst movie I've seen all year and I have seen The flash and Shazaam at least those movies were so bad its good in places
