Before s4 I never found Vanya/Viktor very interesting (he had some cool moments but overall his story/relationships didn’t interest me as much as the others). This season he was the only one of the siblings that I could watch without second-hand embarrassment - his general character development has reached the dysfunction everyone else started at in s1, and I missed those vibes. Everyone else this season was disgustingly ordinary and boring, and it was painful to watch them interact (or rather not interact).
Viktor had been a member of the team for stuff that happened in s2 and 3, and then they all fell apart and went their separate ways without continuous contact for a number of years, to reunite for an end-of-world team up. Which is how everyone else started in season 1. Sure, Vanya/Viktor was there too, but with a fully separate arc - she’d never been part of the family in that way, she hadn’t been part of the team that fell apart but rather was looking in from the outside. Everyone else in season 1 was a misshapen puzzle piece and it was engaging to see them try to piece the whole picture out of those pieces, only to blow it all up when someone’s issues reared their heads.
Now Viktor’s going through every girl in town and can’t hold a relationship to save his life, avoids family gatherings like his ass is on fire, tells ugly truths like he sees it, has a road trip with Reggie, and it feels like he had been part of something and is now a jaded and bitter asshole because he had it blow up in his face… and ok maybe it’s not the same level of interesting as klaus starting a cult or five having trauma from the apocalypse that is symbolised by his mannequin wife, but at least it’s something.
Put back the dysfunction into the rest of them, I don’t recognize these ordinary characters 🔥😬
