“Dance with me.” Daniel says, holding out his hand to you.

You shake your head, “Daniel, you know I don’t dance.”

“Oh, come on, just one song. I won’t take no for an answer.” He says, and you sigh, taking his hand reluctantly and allowing him to drag you onto the dance floor.

You always tried to avoid moments like this. The last time you had even set foot on a dance floor was so long ago you couldn’t even remember. But even more than that, you avoided being alone with Daniel at all costs.

It wasn’t because you didn’t want to spend time with him, far from it, but because every time the two of you were together you always managed to make a fool of yourself somehow. It definitely didn’t help that you were unbearably and embarrassingly in love with him.

You weren’t sure if he knew or not. If he could tell from your awkward mannerisms, the way you blushed bright red when he complimented you, or the way your eyes always found him whenever you made a joke to see if he laughed or not. You tried to hide your infatuation, to keep it a secret so that no one would catch on, but you found it almost impossible to hide your emotions, particularly when it came to your feelings for Daniel.

Naturally, this had meant that some of your more astute friends had caught on immediately to your feelings, and had seemingly dedicated their lives to trying to set the two of you up. But every time they had made an attempt, you had almost instantaneously shut them down. While you would very much like Daniel to see you as more than just a friend, you valued him far too much to see things become awkward between the two of you. You didn’t want to lose him, and actually discovering that your feelings were unrequited would ruin it all. He wouldn’t want to hang out with someone who had a cringeworthy crush on him, and you would never be able to look him in the eye again due to embarrassment.

It was simply easier to just ignore it all as best you could. Sure, you would never know if he liked you back, but it was better that way. Not knowing meant that you never had to face the possibility that he would never see you as anything more than a friend. And that was fine. The ambiguity made being around Daniel just a little easier for you to stomach, even if, right now, your stomach was doing flips at the feeling of his hand in yours.

“I really can’t dance, you know. I was born with two left feet.” You say, and Daniel chuckles.

“Just follow my lead.” He responds, and you gulp, looking up at him as his free hand settles on your waist.

“That’s easier said than done, the only dance I know is the Macarena.” You say, and Daniel smiles at you, shaking his head.

“Just sway your hips to the melody, and when I step forward, step back. Hold on tight.” He says, and he takes a step towards you.

You take a tentative step back to match his movement, placing your hand on his shoulder and gripping his shirt for dear life.

“Now, as I step back, you step forwards.” He says, and you manage to execute the move without injury.

“See, you’re a natural!” He says, and you blush, finding yourself suddenly thankful for the darkness of the room.

“That’s all there is to it?” You ask, and he nods.

“That’s all there is.” He echoes, stepping in towards you once again.

This time, you anticipate his move, and you both move in unison, becoming one as you move to the beat of the music.

“This is easier than the Macarena.” You say with an awkward chuckle, and Daniel shakes his head with a smile.

“Nicer, too.” He says, tightening his grip on your waist and pulling your body closer into his.

“Yeah, it is.” You say, gazing into his deep brown eyes which were fixed firmly on your facial features.

“You know, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you keep trying to avoid me.” Daniel says, and you feel your stomach tie itself into knots.

“Not avoiding you, no, never, I…” You say, but Daniel cuts you off, lifting your hand that he was still holding and placing it around his neck.

You adjust your grip on him, and he snakes his now free hand around your waist to rest it just above your arse.

“I’d be sad, if you were avoiding me, that is. If it’s something I did, just tell me and I’ll grovel like an idiot for forgiveness.” He says, and you gulp.

“No, no, you didn’t do anything, it’s just… no, it’s stupid, forget I said anything.” You say, shaking your head as if to shake your previous words away.

“I bet it isn’t stupid. Just tell me.” He says, pulling your body closer to his as you continue to sway your hips to the music.

“I can’t.” You say, burying your head into his neck to avoid his gaze.

“You want me to say it for you, then?” Daniel asks, and your head shoots up, a nervous look on your face as you pray that he doesn’t know your secret.

“Say what?” You manage to stutter out, your attempt at faking nonchalance failing miserably.

“You’re in love with me.” Daniel says, and your feet fuse to the dance floor.

“I… I don’t…” You stutter out, but in your absolute panic you had lost your ability to speak English.

“Max told me.” He says, and you tut. Fucking Max, of course he blabbed. If you weren’t slightly terrified of him you’d give him what for the next time you saw him.

“Fuck, Daniel, I…” You begin, but Daniel cuts you off, pressing his finger to your lips.

“No, let me first,” he begins, “Max made me promise not to say anything because you were so scared that I’d laugh at you for it, or that I wouldn’t want to hang out with you anymore, and that made me sad. It made me sad because, honestly, I thought you knew me better than that. I’d never laugh at you, or anyone, for having emotions, or feelings. They’re things we can’t control. But it also made me sad because, all this time, we’ve both been dancing around our feelings for each other.”

“Both?” You echo, a shocked expression on your face.

“Have you never noticed how I always make sure to compliment you every time I see you? Or to laugh extra hard when you make a joke? I guess we’re both oblivious idiots, huh?” Daniel says with a chuckle, and you smile.

“I guess we are, yeah.” You say, and Daniel smiles widely at you, and you feel your heart skip a beat. He had such a beautiful smile, and you always relished in the moments that you had been the one to make him do so.

“You ready for your next dancing lesson?” He asks, and you furrow your eyebrows at him.

“This isn’t it?” You ask, and he shakes his head.

“Nope. I’m going to dip you, and then, I’m going to kiss you, and everyone on that table over there is going to go wild.” Daniel says, gesturing with his eyes towards the table of your friends who were all chatting with one another, taking the odd glance towards the both of you.

“Okay.” You say, and Daniel gives you a concerned look.

“We don’t have to, if you don’t want to.” He says, and you shake your head.

“No, no, I do want to, I guess I’m just… surprised, that’s all. This isn’t exactly how I saw this evening going.” You say, and Daniel smiles.

“Baby, this is only the first surprise of many, just you wait.” Daniel says with a smirk, before spinning you around to the steady beat of the music, making sure to wrap his hand tightly around your waist, and dipping you you low.

You linger there for a moment, his face just centimetres away from your own. You gaze into his dark brown eyes and take a deep breath in and out before he presses his lips to your own.

The kiss only lasted for a few seconds, but it was easily the best kiss of your life. As Daniel pulls away, he looks out at the table where your friends are seated, and you hear them whooping and cheering. Whatever plan they had made, they were happily relishing in the fact that it had paid off, culminating in a kiss between the two of you that you had been dreaming about for so long.

Daniel brings you back upright, pulling you closer to him than ever before as your hands wrap around his neck once again.

“So… how was that?” He asks, and you bite your lip, feigning deep thought.

“Hm… it was good, but we might need to try it again, for science.” You say, and Daniel smiles at you.

“Who am I to say no to science?” He says, before pressing his lips to yours once again for a longer, much more passionate kiss.

As he pulls away, he sneaks in another small kiss to your lips, then another, then another.

“You’re going to kiss me to death, Daniel.” You say with a chuckle, as he presses another kiss to the side of your mouth.

“I’m,” kiss, “making,” kiss, “up,” kiss, “for,” kiss, “lost”, kiss, “time,” Daniel says, before pressing his forehead to yours as you sway to the music together.

“Then maybe we can make up for lost time in your room?” You suggest, your eyebrow raised.

“I like your thinking, let’s go.” Daniel says, grabbing your hand and attempting to pull you away from the dance floor.

“Wait, let’s finish this song first.” You say, pulling him back and placing your hand on his shoulder.

“You’re getting into this dancing thing then, huh?” He asks, and you shrug.

“I’m trying a lot of new things tonight, and so far I’ve enjoyed them all.” You say, and Daniel chuckles.

“Well, when this song’s over, we can go upstairs and try out some more new things?” He asks, and you offer him a smile as sweet as sugar.

You press your lips up to his hear and speak quietly, not wanting to be overheard by any of the other couples on the dance floor, “if your fucking is as good as your dancing, then I know I’m in for a good night.”

Daniel was most definitely blushing at your words, you could tell even under the dim lights of the dance floor that his cheeks were flushed red.

He clears his throat, straightens his bow tie, and then, as the song ends, he drags you away from the dance floor.

•Sadly, seeing you comes with seeing Malleus. So, most of the time seeing you ends in a large fight with Leona and your brother.

•Lilia finds this very amusing.

•Vil accepts his feelings pretty easily, though he knows it's for the best bot to act on them, especially with his huge fan club. Putting you in danger with his jealous fans isn't something he wants. 

•Though, of course he ends up not being able to stop himself, and soon enough you're talking and hanging out everyday. The rumors that spread from this isn't something he likes, but he's content with you. 

•He likes doing your hair and Makeup if you'd let him. Also thinks it's cute to see a bow wrapped around one of your horns. 

•Lilia doesn't have an opinion on your relationship. As long as you're happy he's happy. 

•Malleus also doesn't mind this relationship. In the end you're still his little sibling, and in his eyes a random guy isn't going to tear your bond apart. 

•He already knew not to trust Lilia's food the minute he saw it. Politely declines every time Lilia asks if he wants anything. 

•When his fans find out you're both together, it goes better than you'd both expect. Though, that was partly because your draconian and Malleus is just intimidating as hell.  

•His fans find out the hard way not to fuck with you. Not only can you kick ass, but so can all of your family members. 

•In general, your relationship is wholesome and no one minds it. 

~Rook Hunt~

•He also is very fast to accept his feelings. In fact, out of everyone, he's the quickest. 

•He's very interested in your family. Def spies on Lilia, and Lilia pretends not to notice at all. Despite the fact he indeed does notice. 

•Sebek does not like Rook. He gets too close to Malleus for his likings. 

•Speaking of, Malleus thinks it's amusing how curious Rook is about Fae's. Though, he's happy to answer any questions this Blond bob-cut Hunter has. 

•He is flabbergasted when he sees your tails and wings. Asks you to speed your wings, wiggle your tail. He touched and caresses them so curiously.

THIS SHIT IS GAY. I’ve never read something that makes me feel like I’m reading an Inuyasha level anime but where all the characters are grown ups who make rational decisions. The twists and turns on this story got that roller coaster quality that keeps me hopeful it will get better and wondering how it can get worse for all of these people who are trapped together in a magic bubble super war. Every character is thoughtfully fleshed out and it’s hard to pick a favorite when everyone gets to have their moment, you’d think all these moving pieces would be a hinderance on story telling, but hey, it’s chess and every piece counts! Love that everyone has two hands and that means you never know who they might end up dating [except for Syl, Syl’s hands are for kicking ass and I love that for them] and that even though everyone is having a terrible time, they find reasons to push through and find hope for their future. 10/10 would recommend if you love high fantasy, if you wish there was a Naruto vibed story for adults, if you love big tiddy trans femmes and sexy powerful trans mascs and if you want a story that gives you plot AND all of your favorite characters kissing each other for literally a billion chapters. It takes like 60 chapters to make it to the war and these writers make sure every chapter endears you to their huge cast of characters before they punch you in the throat with the tragedies of war, historical erasure, betrayal and the limits of what a human psyche can endure before a person absolutely loses it and makes not one, but many terrible decisions

Anyway have some fun facts about the gods:

The moon god's gender changes along with the cycle of the moon

The sun goddess' body produces a lot of heat (for obvious reasons). Sun burns are a sign of high status because it means you were invited into her personal space. Also darker skinned people are ones whose family has been very high status for a very long time, because they've live closer to the palace and so in a much hotter climate. Basically social power is all about how close you are to the sun goddess

The only exception is that magic users/priests have higher status than everyone, despite the temples usually being on the furthest edges of the kingdom, because their connection to the sun goddess is more profound than mere physical proximity. They have specific attire to demonstrate that status

The sun and moon gods are simultaneously toxic yuri and foundational fratricide, because they were like. "Married" but also theyre the two gods who existed at the dawn of time or whatever so they basically "grew up" with each other. Pseudo incest win!

The history that people are taught is that the moon god created the kingdom and humanity but needed to put their soul into humanity to bring them to life, so they basically died and the sun goddess took over ruling the kingdom to honour them

Im still working out the details of what really happened but it involves the sun putting the moon into a magic coma so that she could have total power over their kingdom

Where the kingdom meets the ocean, near the Palace of the sun goddess, are the Salt Wastes. These are a stretch of land where the tide washes in, but the heat from the sun goddess rapidly evaporates the water, leaving behind thick layers of salt and making the land toxic for vegetation. Because the tides are associated with the moon, this is symbolic of the push and pull for power between the two gods, and the devastation they leave in their wake

Theres gonna be some sort of climax where the sun and moon goddess have to fight. Or something. Idk but what I do know is that there'll be a solar eclipse when it happens

The sun goddess is kind of a cruel ruler so there's gonna be some kind of resistance once the moon wakes up, which is looking to usurp the sun and give the moon control of the kingdom. But like. While the moon is more benevolent than the sun, they're still ultimately a god and therefore divorced from human life and they have a lot of power to abuse, deliberately or not. The idea is to set them up as the perfect ruler to take over, and then to slowly reveal that this is far from the case

This is reflected in their relationships with the leading priestess, Sidera (my favourite character my babygirl my anguished lesbian). As a priestess of the sun goddess, she has a secret fucked up toxic devotion relationship with the sun goddess, which. Remember how people end up with sun burn in her presence? Yeah so Sidera gets very badly burned when they have sex, and the sun goddess often removes the burns immediately after just for extra mind fuckery. Sometimes Sidera's unsure whether they were even there in the first place. But Sidera eventually finds and wakes the moon goddess, and gets to know them in secret, and learns that she can have a better relationship with a god than what she and the sun goddess have. That's what shakes her loyalty and causes her to switch sides to help the revolution, becoming the first priestess of the moon instead

BUT thanks to the shitty relationships they both had with the sun, Sidera has ended up with an extreme need to devote herself to someone entirely (if you think that sounds similar to another character of mine shhhhh) and the moon has ended up with control issues so they kinda make each other worse, culminating with Sidera sacrificing herself to the moon in order to give them the power to defeat the sun. So like. The moon is better to Sidera than the sun was, but still not good

Also on that note, ultimately the story will show that neither the sun or the moon are good enough rulers, you need a secret third option: earth, as in humans. But Sidera's name was taken from the Latin for "stars", so she's always been associated with celestial bodies and although she's instrumental to defeating the sun she was never destined to live in the human-led world that results from it. She's too deep in the habit of worship for that

Also I'm considering whether I want there to be multiple nations, each with their own gods and maybe even their own magic systems but idk how to like. Handle that in the story lol. But it's inspired by misunderstanding an episode of jrwi apotheosis and briefly thinking there were loads of different pantheons each tied to different countries

so it all started happening when me and @obsclete watched Bly Manor together and brrrr the brainworms went insane

so in my head it wouldn't be a 1:1 AU, because there are intrinsically different stories and characters, and trying to change MDZS to fit into this mold would be a disservice, so i'm going more for "similar plot and vibes" but definitely not trying to replicate every plot point, sideplot or character relationship

i wrote a whole thing just now that i decided to shove into a google docs bc it got too long, but the general idea is: Modern AU (21st century), Bly Manor is actually Luanzang Gang Manor someplace in China, which belongs to Wen Popo and Uncle Fouth. A-Yuan is the child (just one) who lost his parents.

yes the manor is actually built on top of the old Burial Mounds, but the story isnt the same as MDZS, and i wouldn't call it a reincarnation AU either

there is, however, an ancient demonic Yiling Laozu, and his spirit (or what's left of it) is the Lady of the Lake

Wen Qing (cleaning and such that wen popo cant do anymore) and Wen Ning (house cook) live in there with Wen Popo, helping to take care of the house and a-yuan, who became traumatized after his parents death and an incident with two ex-workers from the manor (i'm thinking xue yang and xxc with something similar as peter and rebecca). there are ghosts (hi a-qing). uncle fouth takes care of the adminastrive and money stuff, but he has to live in another city bc of the wine brewery he owns

it's hard to say who in wangxian are dani and jamie, i found it hard to fit them in a mold. just know that wangxian knew each other from their teenage years (manchester chinese center in england, music lessons), then became close friends in college, until something Bad happens between him and probably wen chao, and he has to drop out in the first year and run away as to not affect the jiangs. lan zhan graduates with a teaching degree and moves to china, then he learns about the live-in postion in luanzang gang and takes it for reasons i still need to think better about. it turns out wei ying was there too, working as a general maintance guy who also gives a-yuan music lessons. these wens prob heard about what happened in europe (and likely knew wy personally in manchester idk) and decided to take him in and help him

i have a lot of ideas to how it evolves, but i have One scene stuck in my head, which is the one where the Lady of the Lake is taking Flora away, and Dani goes after them yelling "it's me, it's you, it's us!" i keep pictuing a faceless, dark, resentful ghost of the yiling laozu who finally found "a-yuan" again (same way Viola did when she found children who she thought was her child) carrying him to the blood pool (which became just a lake now... or is it) as wei ying run desperately after them, screams the words and takes the yiling laozu into himself to save a-yuan..... yeah....

(the backstory of this yiling laozu will probably have something to do with this post)

anyway yeah, there'll be a lot of stuff about grief, memories, time, probably some references to Hill House as well and idk... i just love the vibes!! it's like "modern au -- no magic (or is it?)" and "reincarnation au? but also not?" and feelings feelings lots of feelings!

also i just woke up so my day just started and i have a lecture in like 20 minutes so im getting ready for that HAHAHAHA ^^

hey bestieeeee it isn't super stressful just like been running around a lot an trynna figure everything out, a lot of it was just cause of the holidays and shit. but tmmrw i'm gonna take my HSE test which i'm so nervous and excited for!! once i get that i feel like i'll finally be able to start moving my life in the direction i want it. but like getting my life ready to live on my own and as an adult is so much like i don't even have my permit yet and i'm almost 18 it's quite embarrassing but the permit test makes my anxiety sky rocket and tbh driving in general does. and my psych says that when i turn 18 my diagnoses will fs change cause they don't like diagnosing personality disorders under 18 which i think is so dumb like if you think i have it now is it gonna magically change once i hit 18??? like no- idk i don't get it but it's wtv and my "partner" has been so fucking distant since we decided to take a break and started actually taking the break seriously which i mean ig i get but like i miss them:( and i feel so alone and weird and not like a person without them and they never wanna come over anymore so it feels like they're leaving me ahskjhg but other than that nothing rlly LMAO
