WEEK 31

DE FEITEN dag 211-213: Long Beach ( 81 km, totaal 9817 km)

Na ons bezoek aan Robert & Margie brengen we de laatste dagen in de VS door in Long Beach en gebruiken we enerzijds om te relaxen en anderzijds voor onze laatste voorbereidingen voor de terugreis. De eerste dag fietsen we naar het strand, drinken we bier in een Engelse pub en koopt Bob nieuwe schoenen en een extra lange broek. Na toch nog behoorlijk wat fietskilometers komen we als tomaten 'thuis' want we zijn vergeten de zonnebrand mee te nemen..... De tweede dag kopen we voor Sjors, de zoon van Bep en Ruud (vrienden van ons op Curacao) een apple computer bij de apple store in Long Beach. Eenvoudige handeling zou je zeggen, maar omdat het een speciale actie voor scholieren is, waar allerlei voorwaarden aan zitten, moeten we ons in allerlei slinkse bochten wringen om het voor elkaar te krijgen. Maar .... het is gelukt. De derde dag fietsen we eerst naar het vliegveld, omdat het online niet is gelukt in te checken. Op het vliegveld blijkt dat geen enkel probleem. De rest van de dag doen we weinig en om 16.15 uur nemen we afscheid van onze host en vertrekken we met bepakte fietsen naar het vliegveld. Voor het eerst worden onze fietsen in de groene plastic hoezen zonder problemen geaccepteerd. Met enige hulp van een collega worden vervolgens onze tassen en fietsen voor een spotprijs ingecheckt door een vriendelijke medewerkster van JetBlue (de fietsen worden beschouwd als 2e tas wat ons een hoop dollars scheelt). Curaçao, here we come!

dag 214: Long Beach - Curacao (0 km) Onze vliegreis brengt ons eerst naar Salt Lake City waar we na een korte pauze vervolgens weer in hetzelfde vliegtuig stappen naar New York. Hetzelfde geldt uiteraard voor onze fietsen die dus gewoon in het vliegtuig kunnen blijven. Tenminste, dat zou je denken....... Na een tweede stop in New York vliegen we uiterst comfortabel naar onze eindbestemming: Curaçao. 

Daar blijkt dat onze bagage, tassen én fietsen, niet is meegekomen. Een vriendelijke lokale medewerkster van JetBlue noteert alle gegevens en geeft aan dat we ook nog een vergoeding krijgen van de luchtvaartmaatschappij. Dat is mooi meegenomen, maar ondertussen wordt ons het moment ontnomen waar we zo naar hadden uitgekeken: op de fiets van Hato wegrijden naar ons onderkomen bij Bep en Ruud. Bovendien heeft Ellen haar badpak niet in de handbagage gestopt, dus zwemmen zit er voor haar niet in. Na een paar uur krijgen we een telefoontje dat onze tassen en fietsen in Salt Lake City zijn gevonden en zaterdag op ons logeeradres worden afgegeven. Het is wat het is. Evengoed genieten we volop: we zijn blij Bep en Ruud na zo lange tijd weer te zien, genieten van een boottocht door Piscadera Bay en eindigen onze eerste dag met een heerlijke barbecue.

dag 215-217: Curaçao (0 km) We komen lekker bij van alle drukte van de vorige dag. Beetje zwemmen (Bob), wat spulletjes kopen, naar de supermarkt, beetje internetten en genieten van heerlijke Amstel Bright-jes. Of onze spullen zaterdag daadwerkelijk komen, is nog wat onzeker. Na het lokale telefoontje dat het in orde zou komen, krijgen we uit Amerika het bericht dat onze tassen nog altijd niet boven water zijn.... Ach, we merken het wel. Uiteraard houden we zaterdag nauwlettend in de gaten wanneer het vliegtuig uit New York op Curaçao landt en zorgen we dat we 'thuis' zijn om onze spullen te omarmen. Na enige uren wachten komt het verlossende busje het terrein oprijden: 2 fietsen en 2 tassen! Behalve een krom fietssleuteltje, enkele scheurtjes in de fietshoezen en een gescheurde tas is alles in orde. Nog voordat Bob de fietsen weer helemaal heeft afgesteld, ligt Ellen al in het zwembad in haar zojuist afgeleverde badpak. Genieten!

Day 2

Vrijdag 25/11

Dag 2 van Us By Night, en wat een beleving weer. Ik en Paula namen samen de trein naar Antwerpen-Centraal (met vertragingen uiteraard)  en gingen door de koude naar de hangar. Vandaag sleurden we beide met een grote camara en tas waar al ons schoolgerief in zat. Door ons inkombandje kwamen we weer makkelijk binnen en konden we weer een inspirerende dag beleven. Eerste stop was terug de gratis wafel van Adobe want ik was hangry (=hungry + angry). Dan zijn we even gaan pingpongen met een tweeling uit Nederland die na een tijdje opgaven omdat ik en Paula echt extreem slecht waren. Hierna gingen we naar de oldschool videogames en hebben we verschillende spelletjes gespeelt. We hebben hierna snel nog een 20 tal minuutjes van de presentatie van United Visual Artists gezien maar wel jammer dat we een stukje gemist hebben. Hierna hebben we de spreker Hato gezien maar eerlijk gezegd heb ik bijna niks begrepen van wat hij zei. Hij was niet zo goed in spreken. Hierna ben ik bij Adidas een gepersonaliseerd T-shirt gaan maken. Je kreeg eerst een hele uitleg (in het Engels) waarna je dan je eigen creativiteit kon loslaten. Ik heb via de computer een soort mandala gemaakt en dit op mijn tshirt gezet. Jammer genoeg bleek de tshirt mij achteraf niet te passen. Ik vond dit persoonlijk het leukste van heel Us By Night omdat dit echt een eigen creatie was. De bus waar ik in mijn eerste post over sprak was ondertussen zo goed als helemaal al betekent/ besprayt met allemaal verschillende dingen (zoveel artistieks zat er niet tussen maar bon) . Er was wel een jongen echt fanatiek bezig met er wel iets kunstzinnig op te zetten, maar heb eigenlijk niet gelet op wat het uiteindelijk is geworden. Wat ik altijd fijn vond is eventjes stoppen bij de tutorial stage omdat ze daar altijd alle tips & tricks van photoshop aan het uitleggen waren. Hierna hebben we rustig nog iets gedronken en een paar beelden gemaakt met de camera die we uitgeleend hadden van de school maar toen was het weer tijd om naar huis te gaan, maar uiteraard ben ik eerst nog eens een gratis wafel gaan halen oops 😊 .
