The water a clear, sparkling teal. From up here Kai could see that the cliffs went deep, deep down; beneath that it was too cloudy to make out anything else except the large, indistinct shadow that lurked under, spreading from the easternmost cliff formation like an ink stain. His throat tightened.

“Found it while diving a few days ago,” Joao said quietly. He had come up behind Kai and was staring at it now, too, with that mix of fear and wonder that people always wore when they saw a Jaeger for the first time. The memory hit Kai like a slap, then: Julian in the hangar, looking up and up and up at Cherno, dappled in shadow by the floodlights, that same look on his face. Is she ours? “It’s a small miracle, that no one’s found it yet.”

Miracle implied that Kai had some sort of divine favour on his side, which he found so amusing that he smiled despite the ache in his chest. “Can you take me to her?”

“Of course,” Joao said immediately, kicking off his slippers and turning an expectant look on Kai.

Kai blinked at him, uncomprehending. “What?”

Mischief crept onto Joao’s face, a much more familiar expression than the solemn, quiet look he’d worn the whole walk here. “Kai,” he said. “You have to jump.”
