Lesson #5.5

Now, Class, let’s move onto our next example of electric technology: the Shinkansen, also known as the Japanese bullet train.

Over the years, we’ve had different representatives in the race. There has been Hashimoto (橋本), Nakamura (中村), Yamamoto (山本), Nintendo (任天堂), and Manga (漫画). 

(Old race brochures often had the misprint “Hashamoto,” but the correct English spelling is Hashimoto, which translates as “base of bridge,” i.e. 橋 = bridge, 本 = origin/base.)

The history of the Shinkansen spans several decades, but we will focus on a few areas of interest for this lesson.

“Shinkansen” comes from the Japanese words shin (新) and kansen (幹線) which translate as “new mainline.” The nickname of “bullet train” came from one of the proposed names, dangan ressha (弾丸列車).

They are so reliable when it comes to punctuality that on average train delays are 24 seconds.

The first generation of Shinkansen trainsets were the 0 Series, which were first in service in 1964 starting with the Tōkaidō Main Line.

As with many National champions, the Shinkansen racers are the power cars of electric multiple units. The number of cars will vary from trainset to trainset, but many Shinkansen can have configurations involving buffet or restaurant cars, first-class cars (”Green cars), and/or standard-class chair cars. 

The original trainsets had 12 cars, but, depending upon model, the number on a set can be as few as 4 (such as the Q sets built in 1997) or have up to 16.

Specific trainsets may have special cars, such as the Children’s Saloon cars on some of the R sets from the 0 Series.

As previously mentioned, first-class cars are called “Green cars,” and these are distinguished by stylized four-leaf clovers.

This is the newest drawing I did for the edo arc of my Stex fanfiction. I wrote new lyrics for the song from Disneys Mulan "Be a man" when Honda tries to encourage Rusty not to give up. (Lyrics are in german, this is the only line in english here) For the pose I used a reference from a art of Boris Vallejo.

StEx Appreciation Month Day 25: The Japanese Engine

OKAY so I'm literally the one who created this but I forgot Zero had a separate day to Volta!!!! I love the National Engines so I thought I'll do one of them today (and I'll do the rest of them later haha!).

Favourite Actor I like Mikey Eborall and Jake Bishop! I got to see them live and they were so good! But for those who I have not seen live, I love Mayo Kawasaki and Kouta Otsuka. Favourite Songs/Scenes I love watching him in Race 2 and when he crashes into the pit. I was sat right next to the pit when I went a few months ago and 😳 Favourite Costumes I think the current Manga costume is a lot better (in my opinion!!!!). But I did love the colours on Hashamoto. Favourite Ships I ship Manga with Turnov Nintendo/Hashamoto I ship with Volta! Headcanons He does karate moves (or something similar) on stage so I like to think he teaches it to little trains! Also I headcanon him to be good friends with Ruhrgold! Unpopular Opinions I don’t have any but I think we can all agree that the OLC costume was… yikes </3

Headcanons about the Japanese Engine?

This is a lot, cause Hashamoto, Nintendo, and Manga are all separate Japanese national champions to me.

Hashamoto is old fashioned and traditional. But by no means cranky or stern. He kind of has that Uncle Iroh personality to him. He could wreak havoc, but he chooses to be peaceful and friendly. And he also loves tea. He particularly enjoys traditional Japanese theatre.

Nintendo (named so because he's sponsored by Nintendo) is the first transgender National to make it to the finals. He's VERY proud of this fact! He also enjoys video games, especially Mario Baseball, because he finds American sports to be fascinating. He's determined and a hard worker, but also likes to have fun.

Manga is by far the most laid back of the Japanese nationals. Racing comes easy to him and he does it because it's fun, not necessarily because he wants to be the champion. It was a pleasant surprise for him that he got to the finals! He particularly enjoys sharing his culture with everyone else and fraternizing with the other champions.

is it just me or does anyone else think that the japanese engine has just had worse name changes as time goes on? like. he went from hashimoto (although technically first he was hashamoto with an a but they changed that) to nintendo, to manga? idk i just think they peaked with his first name and the changes just sound eh

Starlight Express but it's a Farmer's and Craft Market au! I've been rotating the idea around in my head for a few days now (and shared it in some servers!) There are a lot of (mostly) friendly rivalries going on between the vendors. They also barter and trade goods amongst each other!

Here's a map of the general layout of the stalls:

The two stalls on the top row directly to the right of Momma and Rusty were empty for a long time until Pearl started vending in the neighboring stall. About a week later, Electra set up shop.

I've also listed the stall types for each character under the cut (if you can't read my chicken scratch lol)!

Rusty and Momma- Your standard homegrown produce, Momma specializes in chicken and duck eggs

Greaseball- Cured meats, jerky, and BBQ sauce. His younger sister steps in to run his stall sometimes >:)

Electra- Spice blends and dried herbs

Pearl- Handcrafted jewelry

Dinah- Baked goods and jams

Buffy and Ashley- Honey, beeswax, and syrup

Carrie- Handmade bags (totes, handbags, coin purses, etc)

Brandi- Homebrewed beer and mead

Tassita- Succulents, stationary, and greeting cards. He also does custom calligraphy

Memphis Belle and Bonnie (Belle Jr.)- Quilts and crocheted crafts. Bonnie specializes in making plushies

Dustin- Polished and painted rocks

Flat Top- Sometimes he makes miniature sculptures out of welded nuts and bolts to sell at Dustin's stall. He's mostly there just to hang out with Dustin and get free jerky samples

Rockies- Pottery and custom mugs

CB- Foraged mushrooms (are they edible? Who knows...)

BV- He runs a shell game where he can rip people off

Slick- Gourmet olive oil

Porter and Lumber- Woodburn art. Lumber also does whittling on the side

Hydra- He's not a vendor, but he really wants to form a partnership with Rusty and show him Hydroponic Gardening

Wrench- Upcycled furniture

Volta and Joule- Soap, bath bombs, and candles

Purse and Krupp- Flowers

Killerwatt- He doesn't have a stall, he assists Electra

Zero- Smoothie stand (in a food truck set-up)

Espresso and Bobo- Wine and cheese (they used to have separate stalls until their rivalry turned into romance)

Coco- Handcrafted jewelry (uh oh, Pearl's got a rival)

Turnov- Knit goods (scarves, mittens, hats, etc.)

There’s a Train for That #54

Hey, remember how Hashamoto/Nintendo wore that yellow costume once upon a time?

Would you believe there are actually yellow trains on Shinkansen lines?

Meet Doctor Yellow (ドクターイエロー; Dokutāierō), the high-speed test train.

These maintenance trains monitor the tracks and overhanging wires on lines, hence the nickname. They are built similarly to passenger Shinkansen, and “line inspection is carried out at full line speed (i.e. up to 270 km/h or 168 mph on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen).” ~ Wikipedia

Aside from the power cars, the middle cars can include non-powered track-recording cars, and depending on trainset, they can have 4 to 7 cars in total. They were first built in 1963, were put in service in 1964, and continue to be used as testing vehicles until today.

(If Electra can bring his own repair truck, could a Japanese champion bring a Doctor Yellow to service him or her?)

Another old stex fanart. I am currently writing the Edo arc, where Rusty trains with Honda Hashamoto (the name I gave him in my fic). This is an idea for the training to learn "Locomotive Karate". (Yes the idea came partly from the "Fish-man Karate from one piece)

@all-alone-in-the-moonlight claims to hear ‘Strike’ and while I do hear like that ‘i’ sound in there it doesn’t make much sense for that name to go with a mail coach/van?
