Lesson 36 Otae to Shinpachi:

Lesson 259 Gintoki to Tsukuyo

"When it's time to cry, let em' flow. When it's time to laugh let one out from the belly. When you face starts to contorst because you gotta cry, then bawl and nothing less. But when you feel a laugh coming from deep down, then do with a stupidly huge grin on your face. That's all they want from you. They'll lend you an ear or a shoulder... carry a heavy load and walk beside you when you need it. That's good enough. It's more important than tossing away your sense of self just to die a spectacular death."

Lesson 379 Hasegawa and Katsura to Kintoki.

"That's us comrades. When you believe the path you're walking on is the right one, no matter how difficult it is, they walk it with you. However when a time comes that their path just doesn't sit right with you, no matter how perilous that path may be and even if you're all alone having turned everyone into enemies, a friend will stand in their comrade's way.

Katsura: We're friends Hasegawa: No doubt about it

Hasegawa: That's who we are. Katsura: When we believe you're taking the right path we stick with you no matter how hard it is. Hasegawa: But if you're taking the wrong path, we'll stop you, even if it turns the whole world against us.

Thoughts:

I find it amazing how Otae's explanation of Samurai Friendship had been reiterated one way or another by Gintoki, Hasegawa and Katsura. I've mentioned before in my Otae Masterpost that the four of them developed quite a close knit friend group over time. Hasegawa and Katsura are even finishing each other's sentences in Kintama Arc. As we can see above their views on friendship are very similar to each other. They even teach it to others when they're given the chance.

Otae imparted it to Shinpachi while Gintoki and Kagura listened to her and also joined her to save Taka-chin.

Gintoki imparted the wisdom to Tsukuyo.

Hasegawa and Katsura taught it to Kintoki while Gintoki, the ladies and the rest of Kabukichou listened,

Otae's the youngest among them and yet the whole friendship motif kinda started with her. Now that I think about, it's no surprise that they've all grown quite close. It's fascinating tbh.

A Gintama episode a day keeps the ending away…Episode 165

Episode Title: If It Works Once, It'll Work Over And Over Again

MY 15 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN EPISODE 165 (manga chap 246):

I had to perform some censorship of body parts to avoid being unappealably flagged by Tumblr. If one day my blog should disappear completely, you can be sure it’s 100% Kondou and his nakedness’ fault, with probably some help from Sacchan and Madao. 

1) The anime team’s attempt at live action, which was equal parts disturbing and oddly fascinating.

2) Honestly, I got kinda bummed out by Sunrise’s anime studio. Animators deserve a bigger, better and brighter office than that dammit. There shouldn’t be any clutter around because their office is so damn big there’s plenty of room for their crap.

3) I couldn’t decide if I was creeped out or impressed by Mannequin!Gin-chan’s abs, but I’m pretty certain I was just completely unsettled by Mannequin!Kagura. You know what? Never mind, the more I look at this picture the more I’m just creeped the fuck out, so creeped out wins.

4) I thought it was sweet of Kagura to make porridge for Gin-chan. Nevermind that she ended up eating it herself, it’s the thought that counts.

5) Shinpachi was skipping because he was so happy he spend time alone with Tae-chan. I don’t even need this for the ships tally because there was something even better.

6) SO CUTE.

7) This was kind of an unnecessary cutaway (and it wasn’t in the manga), and I have no idea if I even liked how Gintoki and Kagura looked cuz they seemed really uncomfortable, but I just wanted to include it cuz at least they’re wearing something different?

8) I loved that Gintoki and Kagura were acting all concerned because they just really didn’t want Tae-chan to cook. 

9) These two horny, weirdo stalkers.

10) I’ll probably still get flagged for this.

11) Tae-chan being mercilessly brutal towards poor Kondou as usual. 

12) Sacchan was absolutely super duper very clearly naked under that little sticker I had to put there; thi post would’ve been nixed for sure. I can’t believe the anime team got away with showing that on tv. This moment was in the manga too, but she looked like Barbie instead of well, a bottom-naked woman. 

 13) The whole Zura = Will Ill Smith = Obama = Messiah was just so freaking WEIRD, and I really don’t want to think too hard about Sorachi-sama’s intention behind all that cuz it was slightly uncomfortable, but it was somewhat amusing hearing Zura’s voice come out of Ill Smith/Obama.

14) I have no words.

15) I mean, I guess it’s a good thing that this ending was established as just a figment of Shinpachi’s imagination in the anime, because it was definitely less clear in the manga. Still, very wtf.

Honorable Mention:

Yet another piece of evidence that someone on the anime team absolutely ships my OTP (or maybe the entire team does) because the preview for the next episode was soooo unbelievably suggestive, as exemplified by this small snippet:

SHIPS TALLY:

Kondou x Otae: at least he got to sleep a few feet away from her for a brief moment.

Gintoki x Sacchan: her fevered dream lacked her usual quotient sexual violence...Sacchan must’ve been really sick. 

Shinpachi x Otae: his siscon level was going through the roof. 

Hasegawa x Otae: he came specifically to see her, as if he did that all the time. And -chan is also awfully familiar. 

Hasegawa x Zura: “Zura-chi”???? And how did he know Zura would be dropping by later? Do they like chat on the phone or actually get together often or something??
