“Neil Young Heart of Gold”, a 2015 book by #harveykubernik 1) #buffalospringfield - rehearsing at home in Malibu, 1967. “Neil played their debut album to members of #theguesswho at Christmas 1966 when he came back to Winnipeg to visit his mom. The band then cut one of his contributions, “Flying on the Ground is Wrong,” in London in March 1967. Neil was absolutely thrilled that his old pals had recorded their first cover of one of his tunes. (Is that #brucepalmer , front left? I see #stephenstills , #neilyoung , I believe #deweymartin with a guitar and #richiefuray on the right.) #rockandroll #the60s #sixtiesmusic #atcorecords #canadianrock #canada🇨🇦 https://www.instagram.com/p/CVqAXUnLu7O/?utm_medium=tumblr

The fifth chapter of #harveykubernik’s 2015 book “Neil Young: Heart of Gold” … “More to the Picture than Meets the Eye” 1975-1979. 1) US tour with Crazy Horse, Palladium, New York, November 1976. “My career is built around a pattern that just keeps repeating itself over and over again. There’s nothing surprising about it at all. My changes are as easy to predict as the sun coming up and down.” - NY, 1995 #neilyoung #rockandroll #nya #neilyoungarchives #theseventies #neilyoungandcrazyhorse https://www.instagram.com/p/CZXb9YkOgF0/?utm_medium=tumblr

Words from the 2015 book, “Neil Young: Heart of Gold” by #harveykubernik : On the 1974 #csny tour, the musicians, the road crew, even promoter #billgraham, were driven to near-hysterical outbursts by the extravagance, insensate consumption, the wholesale whoring for pride of place before such rapacious egos. Zeke Young, a mere toddler, accompanied #neilyoung on the road, a possibly misguided attempt to keep at least one of the shooting stars grounded. Commuting to shows in a maxed-out motor home, desperate to stay as far as possible from the madding crowd, Neil managed to keep his own intake within the bounds of decorum. #rockandroll #theseventies #rockandrolltour #DavidCrosby #stephenstills #grahamnash #nya #neilyoungarchives https://www.instagram.com/p/CZIFd5WOoTs/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Lonesome whistle on the railroad track / Ain’t got nothing on those feelings that I had” (“Mellow my Mind” from ‘Tonight’s the Night’). Portrait by #henrydiltz, 1971. From “Neil Young: Heart of Gold” by #harveykubernik. “….I mean, I was already a fan of some heavy, underground rock—my favorite bands at the time were #therollingstones, #thewho, #alicecooper — things like that. But I never heard anything that was so willfully broken and raw and so wrong in such a right way. I had never heard music so human and honest and both beautiful and terrifying. #SteveWynn 2015. “I remember playing ‘Mellow my Mind’ over and over just to hear the way his voice cracked. It was a revelation. SW, 2015. #neilyoung #tonightsthenight #the70s #seventiesmusic #repriserecords #mellowmymind https://www.instagram.com/p/CY7C46SroJw/?utm_medium=tumblr

Neil Young - Time Fades Away. From the 2015 book “Neil Young: Heart of Gold” by #harveykubernik . 1) Pictured, on the ill-starred #timefadesaway tour, with #thestraygators, #neilyoung has replaced Old Black, his iconic 1953 Les Paul guitar, with a Gibson Flying V. “I thought “Time Fades Away” was a very nervous album. And that’s exactly where I was at on the tour. If you ever sat down and listened to all my records, there’d be a place for it in there. Not that you’d go there every time you wanted to enjoy some music, but if you’re on the trip it’s important. Every one of my records, to me, is like an ongoing autobiography. My trip is to express what’s on my mind. - NY, 1975. #rockandroll #seventiesmusic #theseventies #canadarock #gocanada https://www.instagram.com/p/CYw5JLnu-fw/?utm_medium=tumblr

#neilyoung taking a walk around #brokenarrow with his dog Winnipeg, 1971. Along with cars and Lionel model trains, dogs are one of Neil’s great relaxations. (From #harveykubernik’s 2015 book “Neil Young: Heartof Gold”) “Actually, “Heart of Gold” was never intended for single release. We went into the studio to cut the album and I guess we were hot that night and it was a good cut , but it’s gone now. I’ve seen a few artists who’ve got hung up on the singles market when they’ve really been album people … it’s easy to do, but if you’re wise, you stay with being what you really are … I just hope there is not a single off my next album. Neil Young in the early 70s. 1) A picture from Harvey Kubernik’s 2015 book “Neil Young: Heart of Gold”… Performing on ‘The Johnny Cash Show’, February 1971. “I told them I wouldn’t do a show unless I could bring in quite a few rock stars. I really liked Neil—he was real country and very intense—so I had him on my show twice.” - Johnny Cash, 1997. #rockandroll #johnnycash #theseventies #neilyoung #harveykubernik #the70s https://www.instagram.com/kjmr97fm/p/CYPBFaRL5SJ/?utm_medium=tumblr

#neilyoung triumphantly returned to Massey Hall, in Toronto, to headline two sold-out solo concerts played back to back on Jan. 19, 1971. As noted in 2015’s book, “Neil Young: Heart of Gold” by #harveykubernik …. “Massey Hall was one of the quietest concerts I’ve ever been to. It was very stark. I can say it was like watching Neil naked.” - Larry LeBlanc, 2014. 1) “I fell in love with the actress” (A Man Needs a Maid” from ‘Harvest’). #carriesnodgress’s Oscar-nominated performance in “Diary of a Mad Housewife “ (1970). #rockandroll #theseventies #harvest #canadarock #ohcanada🇨🇦 https://www.instagram.com/p/CX1uBEXO420/?utm_medium=tumblr

1) Keeping things tight rehearsing with CSNY. However, #neilyoung was increasingly preoccupied with his next solo album, #AfterTheGoldRush. From #harveykubernik ‘s 2015 book “Neil Young: Heart of Gold”. “Deja Vu was supposed to be a unified group. It wasn’t. “Helpless” was a Neil Young song on that album the way “Julia” was a #johnlennon song on the Beatles’ White Album. Neil was never a team player and this is another example. You got the sense Neil was saving the best stuff for a solo album, but this one leaked out.” - James Cushing. #rockandroll #theseventies #seventiesmusic #csny #repriserecords #DavidCrosby #stephenstills #grahamnash https://www.instagram.com/p/CXl_O2ZL1Wv/?utm_medium=tumblr

Always good seeing a Crazy Horse pic, with Danny Whitten. From the 2015 book, “Neil Young: Heart of Gold” by #harveykubernik 1) #neilyoungandcrazyhorse live at the #fillmoreeastnewyork , March 1970. Left to right, #jacknitzsche #neilyoung #dannywhitten #billytalbot and #ralphmolina . “I don’t know how it happens, but when I’m singing and playing with Crazy Horse, I’m a different guy. I write a different thing, I see things differently, I see deeper pictures, I’m able to write and express myself much deeper in a certain way than I do with anybody else.” - NY, 2012. #rockandroll #theseventies #crazyhorse #crazyhorseband https://www.instagram.com/kjmr97fm/p/CXHRj1IOGT1/?utm_medium=tumblr

1) Neil moved out of Los Angeles in late 1966, first to Laurel Canyon and then in 1968 to Topanga Canyon. As noted in #HarveyKubernik ‘s 2015 book “Neil Young: Heart of Gold”. “I think living in Topanga is a way of telling yourself that you don’t live in Los Angeles. The fact is, you are always a part of the big city. You are only cut off by your choice of being cut off. #neilyoung could live there and still record in #hollywood.” - Tosh Berman, 2014. #rockandroll #thesixties #nya #neilyoungarchives #canadianrock https://www.instagram.com/p/CWQ4e_uLsvB/?utm_medium=tumblr

From “Neil Young: Heart of Gold”, a 2015 book by #harveykubernik - 1) pictured, their 2nd album, Buffalo Springfield Again, released in November 1967. “On #buffalospringfieldagain the songs were so strong, and so were the performances. We had two massively prolific writers, #stephenstills and #neilyoung and there was constant tension between the two — creative tension that would manifest itself in either one of them, you know, losing it for a few minutes. And then they would get back together and hug like crazy and do the songs.” - #brucebotnick , 2014. Note: "Expecting to Fly" (Young). Recorded May 6, 1967, Sunset Sound, Los Angeles, California. Lead vocal: Neil Young. Arrangement: #jacknitzsche (Rest of group absent). #rockandroll #sixtiesmusic #atcorecords #richiefuray #brucepalmer #deweymartin https://www.instagram.com/p/CV-x0e7rjFH/?utm_medium=tumblr

More from the “Expecting to Fly” chapter of #harveykubernik ‘s 2015 - Neil Young #heartofgold book. (Great song BTW, “I tried so hard to stand. As I stumbled and fell to the ground.”). 1) #buffalospringfield at their pulsating best, with #richiefuray and #stephenstills front and center, at the #whiskeyagogo October 1966. “The real core of the group was the three Canadians - me, #brucepalmer and #deweymartin We played in such a way that the three of us were basically huddled together behind, while Stills and Furay were always out front. ‘Cause we’d get so into the groove of the thing, that’s all we really cared about. Time meant nothing. We were ready.” - NY, 1997. #neilyoung #rockandroll #thesixties #sixtiesmusic #canadianrockers https://www.instagram.com/p/CVQd8NdrHmm/?utm_medium=tumblr
