Scarred for Life: The Harvey Dent Story

[From Batman: The Audio Adventures, Season 1 Episode 2 "The Skylight in the Nursery"]

Here is a version of Harvey Dent's backstory (specifically from Batman: the Audio Adventures aka probably my personal favorite iteration of the character). I figured that for anyone newish to Batman fandom, that this might be useful to see! Or well... Hear in this case. Though usually it isn't Penguin who puts him through this, but rather one of Gotham's many, many crime families are usually the ones to disfigure him. Regardless, I hope you enjoy! Personally I just REALLY like Harvey's voice actor here and could listen to him talk all day. ૮⸝⸝> ̫ <⸝⸝ა

Also reading through the transcript now and thinking about it... I wonder if the Penguin paid Mr. Pratkins extra to compliment him and say impressive things about him and his casino and lounge to the jury, and more importantly to his crush (Harvey)... Probably, let's be honest.

Jack Ryder: It's one of Gotham City's most tragic tales. A lion-hearted litigator becomes a fractured fiend. Once a beacon of hope for a brighter Gotham, former district attorney Harvey Dent is now one of the city's most erratic public enemies. As Two-Face, he's believed to run a vast criminal empire within Gotham City. But a canny combination of legal genius and vicious intimidation has thus far allowed him to evade arrest. Harvey Dent was born to a modest household in the Gotham Narrows. His father was a domineering--

Jack Ryder: The date was February 2nd. The place was the old Gotham courthouse. Harvey Dent had shocked the city by finding a witness willing to testify against a prominent Gotham businessman and suspected crime kingpin, none other than Oswald Cobblepot.

Jack Ryder: Some call him the Penguin, though rarely to his face and never more than once. It would have been the biggest conviction of Harvey Dent's storied legal career. Instead, it was the last case he ever tried.

Harvey Dent: Can you please state your name for the record?

Jackson Pratkins: The name's Jackson Pratkins.

Harvey Dent: Jackson Pratkins, are you also known in the Gotham underworld as the contract killer called Jack Sprat?

Jackson Pratkins: Yeah, that's me. Jack Sprat, by baseball bat, by knife, or gasoline.

[crowd murmurs]

Jackson Pratkins: That was my gimmick. But that's not me no more. I done some bad things, but I want to make it right.

Harvey Dent: That's what we're here to do today, Mr. Pratkins. Now, when did you first accept payment for illegal activities from Oswald Cobblepot?

Jackson Pratkins: I'm sorry, Cobble-who?

Harvey Dent: Oswald Cobblepot. You may know him as the Penguin.

Jackson Pratkins: Oh, the casino man, impresario extraordinaire Oswald Cobblepot. I never met him.

Harvey Dent: You nev--[chuckles] Mr. Pratkins, I remind you you are under oath and in your sworn statement, you detailed numerous criminal transactions initiated by Oswald Cobblepot.

Jackson Pratkins: Oh, you misunderstood. Sure, I said Mr. Cobblepot oughta be in jail 'cause he robs me blind every payday at that socko casino of his. You know Stoveplate Sullivan plays there every Saturday night? Exclusive engagement.

[laughter]

Jackson Pratkins: Beat that, folks.

Harvey Dent: Mr. Pratkins, you are gonna be charged with perjury, and your plea deal will be void unless you tell this court the truth. Isn't it true that you…

Jackson Pratkins: [muttering]

Harvey Dent: Murdered Gotham City Councilman Hubert Wainwright on orders from Oswald Cobblepot?

Jackson Pratkins: [sighs]

Harvey Dent: And isn't it in fact true that Oswald Cobblepot himself was present at the scene of the crime as evidenced by this article of his personal property recovered by the police? This very distinctive custom-made umbrella. One more chance, Mr. Pratkins. Can you testify that this umbrella belongs to the Penguin?

Jackson Pratkins: Well, since you put it that way, hand me that, uh, um-brella, so I can get a better--yeah, thank you, counselor. Oh, yeah, it seems I do remember something about Penguin's special umbrellas. I remember there's a little secret button here on the handle, hard to see, so take a real close look, handsome.

Harvey Dent: What are you--

Jack Ryder: We pause for a moment to warn our viewers that what you are about to see is extremely disturbing. Parental guidance is strongly advised.

Jackson Pratkins: Have an acid spritzer, Dent!

Harvey Dent: Ahh!

Sybil Pandemik: She is a career-woman and knows what she is doing. Sybil cares about her appearance and how she is perceived, she is the most likely to give a shit about her hygiene.

Myra Stump: She is a talk-show host on TV and has a large audience. She definitely cares a lot about her hygiene since she acts like a bossy mom.

Santa Claus or the elves: Smells like holiday cheer, one of the best scents.

Momma Bosco: Self-explanatory, she probably smells of 60’s perfume and definitely takes good care of her hygiene.

Agent Superball: He probably smells like a really good cologne and he takes himself extremely seriously.

Grandma Ruth: Ruth probably has that grandma perfume smell that is just extremely nostalgic. She definitely cares about her BO.

The Narrator: He is British and very sophisticated, he takes good care of “himself”.

Jurgen: He is very attention-seeking and cares how other people perceive him. He definitely collects the latest and most popular perfume.

Conroy Bumpus: Sure, he may be involved in animal cruelty, but he seems to care a lot about his appearance. He has a toupee on display with high-security soooooo…. he cares a lot.

The Director: She is a director known for being prestigious about acting and probably takes good care of her hygiene.

Darla "The Geek" Gugenheek: She definitely showers regularly.

Sam/Sameth: Sam definitely cares about his hygiene for the most part. He acts like a dad and probably smells like one and cares about how he is perceived.

Lee-Harvey: He is a henchman for Conroy Bumpus and looks well-kept.

Anyone in the toy mafia: These guys probably smell ok.

Satan: Weirdly I think Satan in this series probably smells alright. He always cares about whether his bald-spot is showing on camera during the interview in *The City That Dares Not Sleep*.

T.H.E.M.: They smell average.

Abraham Lincoln: Smells like stone? (Whatever that means)

The C.O.P.S.: The smell of machinery.

Roscoe Bosco: He probably smells average, maybe a little sweaty some days.

Sal: He is a cockroach but seems relatively well-kept.

Flint Paper: He probably showers, but cares more about cases rather than personal hygiene.

Lorne (the friend for life): He doesn’t shower as much as he should.

Mr. Featherly: He is a chicken, but he does seem to care about how he is seen and is very much an attention-seeker.

Sammun-Mak: He smells like dirt but like in a good way, like the nostalgic kind of way.

Trixie: Ehhh she smells well… like a giraffe with a layer of perfume overtop

Max/Maximus: We all know he is covered in so many germs, but Sam definitely tries to get him showered every once in a while.

Hubert Q. Tourist: He is a strange, strange fellow. I don’t know what it is about him, but he makes me uncomfortable and he probably doesn’t smell all that well.

Hugh Bliss: Bacteria

Bessie: She’s a cow…

General Skun-ka’pe or his minions: All I need to say is gorilla.

Bruno: He is a bigfoot, need anymore explaining?

Brady Culture: I don’t think I can explain why, but I think he just doesn’t smell good at all.

Anton Papierwaite: HE IS FRENCH! (Also his *secret* makes him smell worse probably)

Girl Stinky: She smells like really bad, but tries to haphazardly spray perfume to cover it up.

Charlie Ho-Tep: People don’t have the decency to wash their hands before playing with him.

Any sea creatures: I absolutely despise the smell of fish…

Any of the baby characters: Babies can smell really bad…

Jurgen’s Monster: He is basically Frankenstein’s Monster, so he probably doesn’t smell good.

The zombies: They are undead and *god* do the dead smell gross.

Eldritch horrors of any kind: They don’t smell very good.

Molemen or the Rats: These guys smell like shit and probably don’t care about showering. They live in the sewers.

Grandpa Stinky: It’s in the name, he smells absolutely rancid. He probably hasn’t showered in decades.

I saw a few other family trees and decided to make my own, This one being for the Calvin-Curtis family!

There are more details and names under the cut (Squiggly lines are siblings, Erased lines mean a couple is no longer together, And a halo/wing means that person is deceased)

Starting from the top left, We have Artemis and Anita Calvin. As you can probably imagine, The Calvins were a family that always had a connection to the military, With both Artemis and Anita having served (It's actually how they met).

They had two children, Marlene Calvin and Aiden Calvin.

Marlene eventually decided to work at the Wall, Where she met Evan Guardsmith. The two eventually got married and had Matteus Guardsmith.

Aiden on the other hand joined the military. Sometime before that though, He met Janice Houston, Who was an elementary school teacher. The two eventually had Charles Calvin.

Speaking of Janice, She has a sister named Laura Houston. Her wife's name is Claire Reilly, And they adopted their child Erin Houston.

Onto the Curtis side of the family, We have Louis and Emma Curtis. Louis was a newspaper writer while Emma was a crime photographer. They only had one child, Harvey Curtis.

Harvey began working as a writer when he met Caly Hamilton. She was a member of the Toppat Clan, Which he figured out sometime after they started dating. He knew this was probably a bad idea, Continuing to date a criminal. But they loved each other, And eventually had Burt Curtis.

Caly's brother, Maxie Hamilton, Was never really interested in having a romantic relationship with anybody. He did want to raise a kid though, So he adopted Alice Hamilton.

After Adien and Caly's deaths, Janice and Harvey eventually met and hit it off. Sometime after they got married, They had Harrison Calvin-Curtis.

(While it's not really mentioned on the tree, Hubert Galeforce is basically Charles, Burt, and Harrison's godfather, Due to his connection to Aiden)

One of the most amazing and intriguing things for me about nature is the ability of an animal to make its home. Whether it's weaving intricate nests, secreting what they need to make a shell, or digging for miles underground to make a den, animals always seem to find a way to create a resting place. This to me is a particularly beautiful thing and I often like to look at human houses in a similar manner. We build, decorate, and live in these spaces that provide us what we need to live comfortably. We too always find a way to make a home. 

A prime example of this for me is seen in caddisfly larvae. During larval development these insects build cases to keep themselves safe (Mouro et al., 2016). Usually these cases are made of silk that they secrete in addition to materials from their surroundings such as sand and mollusk shells (Mouro et al., 2016). These insects have the natural instinct right from the beginning of their lives to create a home in order to stay safe. This for me shows that it is our nature to do so. Even though the stakes are a lot higher for wild animals (life or death) it is still nice to think about the similarities in our home building activities too. A particularly beautiful thing that I have seen in caddisfly larvae is actually a tie-in between art and nature. A french artist by the name Hubert Duprat actually supplied caddisfly larvae with gold and precious stones to see if they would use them to create cases; the results are pretty stunning. 

Another example of the amazing home-building behaviour in nature is seen in penduline tit birds. These birds, commonly found in Eurasia, North America, and Africa build hanging nests from tree branches that are very complex. The birds actually get their name from these nests as they hang like a pendulum (Peacock, 2023). These nests are small, hollow ovals with an inside portion completely enclosed (Peacock, 2023). They even usually have a fake entrance in case a predator were to enter! It leads them to an empty compartment of the nest. Seeing the complexity and thought that goes into creating a home to hatch young is a pretty beautiful thing. Going as far as to incorporate safety measures so that your young hatchlings do not get attacked by predators just adds to it. 

The last example I want to share is the underground burrows created by colonies of naked mole-rats. These rather funny looking creatures are eusocial species, they work cooperatively to survive, usually in colonies of around 80 individuals (Bromham & Harvey, 1996)! Naked mole-rats, who are basically blind, dig complicated burrows underground that can span four kilometers (Smithsonian, accessed November 8, 2024). These tunnels branch and interconnect and even have designated turnaround points (Smithsonian, accessed November 8, 2024). Working with a large colony to make a complex structure to live in and raise young is one of the prime examples of animals' abilities to make homes. 

Nature is full of many wonderful things and I could go on forever about all my favourite ones. However my favourite thing about nature is definitely the home-building ability of animals. It makes me really happy to learn about the different methods that different species use to create their homes and what they use them for.

I went to school with a girl named Edith; I don't recall anyone making fun of her for it. My cousins have one of the names above, and they were named after our grandmother.

The switch from the Paris Hilton era of beauty standards to the kardashian era of beauty standards gave me whiplash. It’s so fucked up that the expectations for women’s bodies change like clothing trends, but men have literally always had the same beauty standards basically. When I was 13, women were supposed to be stick thin and have no hips, and two years later we were supposed to be “slim thick” and it literally changes like every ten years. It’s an impossible game - if you were super hot in 2006, then it was physiologically impossibly for you to be super hot in 2016 because it required different fucking bone structure. All men are ever required to do to meet current beauty standards is be kinda tall (but wasn’t Tom cruise the “sexiest man alive” at one point?) and be in shape. Always. That’s it. A man who was considered hot a thousand years ago would still be hot! But women are supposed to radically change ourselves every decade, if we want to be beautiful. Fuck that.

Page 23. --- Get 15 Months for Attacking and Robbing Fruit Peddler at Reserve ---- Two Indian youths who attacked a fruit peddler and robbed him of 75 cents worth of bananas on the Caughnawaga Indian Reservation a week ago were each sentenced to 15 months in prison when they appeared before Judge Gustave Marín yesterday following previous pleas of guilty.

The two sentenced were Christopher White, 20, and John Bordeaux, 19, both residents of the reserve who were taken into custody by Chief John K. Jocks, special Federal police officer of the Caughnawaga municipality.

Fernard Trottier, the peddler, was enticed into a lane in the Indian village on the pretext that a woman wanted to buy fruit. Four boys, two of them juveniles, attacked him and knocked his fruit to the ground. After punching him they fled with their loot. Advised of the thefts and given descriptions of the attackers, Chief Jocks rounded them up at their homes a few minutes later. The boys claimed that they had at- tacked the peddler only "to scare him."

A. Williams, 31, charged with the theft of $800 worth of tires, and office supplies as well as with stealing a truck, pleaded guilty when arraigned yesterday before Judge F. T. Enright. He will be sentenced on January 23.

Detective-Sergeants Boyer, Pashby, Clarkin and Harvey arrested him on Wednesday morning when they raided premises at 765 Versailles street. The stolen merchandise was the property of Tire Distributors, 744 Mountain street.
