Jonathan’s stomach was leaden as he walked out of his home and out to the car with the lieutenant. 

He purposely ignored thinking about the look on Jennifer’s face when he tried to reassure her that he would be safe. Reassurances that sounded hollow to his own ears. Robin could slip a knife between his ribs and it would cause less pain than losing Jennifer. 

He didn’t know how to explain that to her - to burden her with his own very real guilt that, once again, she was in danger because of him. 

Instead, he resolved to fix the problem.

ii. Jennifer had seen the look in her husband’s eyes, and it terrified her to the marrow. 

He thought he could shield her but she knew him better than that. She saw guilt and terror that she might be next on Robin’s list.

He was determined to keep her safe.

How did she explain to him how lonely and frightening it was in the ivory tower he’d placed her. She was removed from danger, surely, but she felt painfully disconnected from him as well. His hand in hers was cold, his kiss distant.

It was as though Robin had already succeeded.
