Harry Greb won the world middleweight title by outpointing Boston southpaw, Johnny Wilson, over 15 rounds in front of a relatively small crowd of 11,000 at the Polo Grounds, New York, #OnThisDay in 1923. They had made him wait until he was 29 years old, but finally he had the championship. What nobody knew by then was that he was fighting under an incredible handicap. Greb had lost the sight in his right eye, following a foul-filled No Decision bout a seriously tough light-heavyweight, Kid Norfolk, in 1921. As the decade wore on, so the sight in his left eye began to deteriorate too to the point where he said with deep regret: “I can’t tell a dame from a priest until she’s close enough to smell her perfume.”. Greb, known for his busy schedule, had won the American light-heavyweight title famously against Gene Tunney, lost it controversially to Tunney and defeated Wilson for the world middleweight crown all in the space of 15 months. At one point or another, Greb outfought them all. The 'Pittsburgh Windmill’ had just past his twenty-ninth birthday and had been fighting professionally for nearly 10 years and had fought close to 200 fights. When the decision was announced the crowd showed it’s approval boisterously while Greb's handlers, more excited than the crowd, boosted the new champion shoulder-high and the, with startling suddenness, dropped the smiling fighter to his feet. Still beaming, Greb left the ring and headed for his dressing room jubilant at winning the elusive crown after 10 long years of ring service. For 13 of the 15 rounds Greb fought like a perpetual motion machine and pummelled Wilson to the crowd’s delight. When the final bell ended Wilson’s misery, the former champion was a sorry sight. The bridge of his nose was cut, his mouth was bleeding, his lips were swollen and raw, he had swelling under the right eye and his left eye was almost closed. #boxing #BoxingNews #BoxingHistory #HarryGreb #JohnnyWilson (at Polo Grounds) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnJ7uE5BsNG/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=11eiuf4kvzcdy

Harry Greb was magnificent: a marauding, fun-loving maverick who broke all the rules, fought his way to the top and died young. He was the only man to beat Gene Tunney. In sparring and weighing just 162lbs, it was said he gave heavyweight champ Jack Dempsey nightmares. In more than 300 fights he took on anyone, anywhere, at any notice, whatever the weight he had to concede, and yet was middleweight champion for three years until, blind in one eye and with sight dimming in the other, he lost a contested decision to Tiger Flowers. Greb was a one-off and should never be forgotten. He was born #OnThisDay in 1894 in Pittsburgh, and lived all his life there. His wife and childhood sweetheart Mildred tragically died in 1923 after a lingering illness, but they had a daughter, Dorothy, who was raised by Greb’s sister Ida. He turned pro at 18 years old and only lost inside the distance twice – to Joe Chip and Kid Graves (Greb suffered a broken arm) – both times as a fledgling professional. Hi workrate was phenomenal: in 1917, he had 33 fights, in 1918, when he spent time in the US Navy, he cut down to 26, and in 1919, he had an astonishing 46! It was a stray thumb from tough heavyweight Kid Norfolk in 1921 which caused Greb to lose sight in his right eye. He didn’t complain. When he eventually defended his world middleweight crown against Flowers in 1926, it was Greb’s seventh fight of the year. Flowers, an awkward southpaw, won a split decision. The rematch was Harry’s final fight again he was outpointed in a fierce contest, and retired. Two months later he was dead. He never recovered from the anaesthetic after an operation on scar tissue over his eyes and to aid his breathing after a car crash. Greb died officially, and ironically for one of the bravest fighters ever, of heart failure on October 22, 1926. He was 32 years old. It was discovered that he had been blind in one eye for five years and had a glass eye for the last two months of his life. #boxing #BoxingNews #HarryGreb (at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)
