When I say "Louis Tomlinson haunting the Haylor narrative is my favourite genre" I need people to know that I mean it. And I mean it when I say the dude HAUNTS the Haylor narrative, like he's the ghost of Christmas past; there are so many examples of it, but my absolute favourite is the compass, because it's just... So much.

So. H got the ship, right? At the peak of Haylor, when they were the IT couple everybody knew (which. Isn't it ironic that then Mr Styles spent the consequent... 5 years of songwriting? Or something?, talking about a relationship that was mostly secret? And everyone was like "this is about TS"? Anyway).

And the thing is. The thing is. The Haylor narrative had always been hilarious to me bc they truly did The Most. Honestly, no one did as much as those two pr teams combined did to make a relationship believable, and no one did such an AWFUL job (with the exception of hiddleswift, which was more tongue-in-cheek and self-aware anyway) in the history of pr relationships. Their story was so backwards and convoluted it doesn't even sound like they proofread the blurb of the narrative they were going to put out. I'm sure miss Tree is still having nightmares about it twelve years down the line and she wasn't even involved.

And I truly truthfully love how they both embraced it completely. Like, miss swift does her little thing where she'll write a song about someone, and sometimes she'll be very tongue-in-cheek about it, but nowhere she did it as much as she did with Harry, and H was Definitely up for the challenge, considering he named a whole ass track 'Trouble' and the nonsensical mentions of 'thirteen' just for the fun of it.

They had their fun building a narrative from scratch and I love that for them!

Because there is no fucking way IKYWT is for Harry. Like. It's 2024, I hope we all know that song was not for harry and I'm sure HE knew the song had nothing to do with him, but by god did they TRY to convince us of the contrary.

Did it make sense timeline-wise? Absolutely not, even if you try to grasp at straws, but oh, did they try.

Now, I'm sure we all remember the VMAs, highlight of my career, cameras panning to Harry absolutely unbothered, moisturised, clapping and chewing his gum as Miss Swift dedicated the award to the person who inspired the song, all while our homeboy was seething with passive-aggressiveness (dude didn't even clap! Their one-sided feud gives me life). Truly L was one with the larries in being a Haylor anti.

But we're not here to discuss that.

Because at least by then TS and H had broken up and it made some modicum of sense for her to be dedicating a song about a failed relationship to him. I mean, it made no sense to think she had written it with Harry in mind (Red was made while they maybe had seen each other once, not to mention it's famously about another relationship), much less to think she had made the video with him in mind (they were off gallivanting together! Why the fuck would she make a video like that about him). But that's the narrative that was circulating! And the funniest part is: the ship was used as evidence.

I'm sorry if I bring back some unwanted memories, but this is like. My absolute favourite thing. No headline has headlined the way this headline headlined. Notice that the ink was basically still fresh on the lovely boat (six fucking am in the morning, L hadn't even done his yet i think) and they were already putting out feelers so that H's tattoo would be linked to the video, which would link him to the song.

I'm not even saying he couldn't have been influenced by that tattoo (maybe he saw it and thought it was a cool idea), but you do see how "the removable tattoo a guy had for the music video about a sad song my gf wrote" is so far removed from "romantic tattoo idea to remember said gf" it would almost be insulting? They didn't care. They were doing The Absolute Most in pr terms, and it didn't even work!

Because, like a real presence haunting the narrative, Louis Tomlinson got the fucking compass that very same day. He truly was like "did you think this was about his fling with Blondie? Think again!" and that? That is so lovely to me. That is such a good way to haunt and counteract the narrative. Nothing will ever beat that and I'm grateful I got to witness it.

“I think that’s because they messed up his smile.”

“Ugh. Looks more like Satan than Santa.” He cringed and then kissed her forehead. “I love you, weirdo. Wouldn’t wear this for anyone else.”

“Awww, I love you, too,” she said with her arms around his waist.

Harry smiled as he held her cheeks. “Now, what movie should we–”

The buzzing of his phone on the table cut him off mid-sentence. Y/N would have asked him to ignore it if the messages didn’t keep on coming. They were all from a group chat.

“Looks like an emergency,” she said.

Harry looked guilty. “You want me to read them?”

She nodded. “Go ahead.”

“Kay.”

Harry grabbed the phone and they both sat down together on the couch to read the messages from his friends.

Niall: Harry what the fuck? You didn’t forget, did you?

Layla: Hello???? Styles???? Are you coming or are we not friends anymore???

Liam: CHRISTMAS PARTY AT LOU’S

Louis: Bring your girlfriend if you must

Trix: Hey, guys, watch this cat TikTok!

“I wanna watch that cat TikTok,” Y/N joked. Harry said nothing. He gave her an apologetic look and she knew right away what he wanted to say. “It’s okay.” She smiled. “Let’s go to the party together.”

Still, he didn’t look any more relieved. “I feel terrible,” he said. “I should have told them I was gonna spend time with you tonight.”

Y/N shushed him as she leaned in and kissed him on the lips. Cupping his face, she said, “It’s okay. We can leave early and watch the movie when we get back.”

“Yeah?” Harry’s face brightened. “Thank you for understanding, love. I’ll go change.”

“Change?”

Harry froze as soon as he got up. When he gestured to the sweater, Y/N replied with a raised eyebrow, challenging him to even ask the question.

He let out a sigh as his shoulders slumped. “You’re gonna make me wear this to the party, aren’t you?”

“Well, that’s your punishment,” she said with a shrug.

He blew out his cheeks and smirked, standing with his hands on his hips like a dad. “Oh, the things I’d do for you. I fucking hate myself for that.”

“Don’t worry.” She beamed, leaning back into the couch. “I’ll love you for both of us.”

Just like how the Great Wall of China was visible from space, this party was audible from space. Y/N knew Louis was rich and he only shared a flat with Liam and Niall to get the full ‘college experience’, but it wasn’t until tonight that she discovered he wasn’t just rich, he was ‘paying his neighbours so he could play music so loud you could practically see the sound waves’ rich. When Harry opened the door, the noise sucked Y/N in like a black hole. She couldn’t just hear the music, it was pounding inside her body, making my heart thump in rhythm with the beat. She hated this already.

“You good, love?” Harry asked, squeezing her hand. He could always sense when she was getting nervous in public without her having to explain herself. She was thankful for that.

“I’m good. We’ll leave early anyway,” she said, reassuring herself with a forced smile.

Harry nodded and pulled her closer. They let themselves get dragged into the orbit of people, slipping in between bodies, suffocating in a blanket of smoke and aftershave. Ew. This was why Y/N hated parties.

The one thing that put her off the most was Harry looking almost out of place as her. At first, she couldn’t figure out the reason why he seemed so anxious; he was always the life of the party. Hands grabbed him and people called his name, but he didn’t respond to anyone. It took her a moment to realise that it must be the ugly matching sweater she’d made him wear tonight. As embarrassing as it was, Y/N found it quite hilarious.

They finally made it to the kitchen, which heaved like a living organism with people slithering over one another, back and forth between the fridge and the door. Harry held her hand tightly as they skittered around a couple who were basically dry humping against the kitchen island. His friends were standing by the freezer with several bottles of vodka in their hands. Trix was the first to notice Harry and Y/N because she was the only one who’d been daydreaming instead of taking part in the convo.

“Harry’s here!” Trix cheered as she gave Harry and then Y/N a bear hug.

Sitting on the counter, Layla flipped her hair over her shoulder and eyed Harry up and down with a corner of her mouth arched. “Well, well, well, isn’t this Santa Claus? What the fuck are you wearing?”

“Clothes.”

“Whose?” Louis asked, tittering like a schoolboy into his fist.

“Your mum’s,” Harry answered dryly, causing Liam to burst out laughing.

“Aww, matching sweaters,” Niall pointed out as he gestured between Y/N and Harry with the hand that was holding the bottle.

“Oh, didn’t see you there,” Layla told Y/N with a smirk. “Santa’s favourite elf.”

“Can you not be mean for one night? It’s literally Christmas’ Eve,” Harry said calmly yet Y/N could make out the annoyance in his tone. It wasn’t unusual that he had to stand up for her to Layla. Y/N couldn’t tell that the girl was brutally honest or just unapologetically mean. She could see herself becoming friends with Trix and the guys, but she wouldn’t dare to dream of getting to know Layla Scott.

“You don’t get to act like a victim, Styles.” Layla cocked her head. “You ditched us for her then showed up when the party’s almost over, dressed like my dad on family portrait day.”

“Family portrait day?” Liam sounded surprised.

Niall gave a nonchalant shrug. “Rich people thing.”

“We do that,” Louis added. “Awful awful day.”

“I wanna see the portrait!”

“Later, Trix.”

“I’m sorry,” Harry sighed, combing his fingers through his hair. “I forgot to tell you guys I had other plans with Y/N, but we’re here now–Niall, did you just take a pic?”

“It’s for my story,” Niall said and quickly thrust his phone into his back pocket before Harry could grab it. “I wanna show everyone your sweater. Santa looks high as fuck. No offence, Y/N.”

“It’s ugly.” Layla crossed her arms as she gave both sweaters a look of disgust. “You’re a simp, Harry. That’s what you are.”

“Um, guys?”

“What Trix?” Louis asked. Everyone looked at Trix. Y/N could take Layla’s insults because Layla insulted everyone, but if Trix said something mean to her, she’d definitely cry.

“I actually love their sweaters,” Trix said, to everyone’s shock. “The picture of Santa Claus on Harry’s sweater might give me nightmares tonight, but I think it’s sweet that Harry’s wearing it simply because it makes Y/N happy. Would you wear an ugly sweater for Layla, Niall?”

Everyone knew Trix wasn’t being savage; she was just curious and straightforward. But Niall was already sweating. “Layla would never let me wear an ugly sweater,” he nervously chuckled.

Layla’s reaction was the opposite of satisfied. “It’s a yes or no question, Horan,” she snapped.

“Uh...”

“Unbelievable!” Layla gasped and hopped off the counter.

Liam and Louis tried to contain their laughter as they watched Layla storm to the door and Niall rushing after her to apologise.

“I feel bad,” Y/N said.

Harry laughed as he rubbed her back. “Don’t be, babe. Last week she was mad at Niall because he said he wouldn’t be friends with her if she were a worm.”

Y/N’s raised both eyebrows. “Oh.”

“They’re in love,” Louis said.

Liam nodded enthusiastically. “We’re still waiting for them to find out.”

The guys all laughed together, so Y/N did too. She felt much more at ease now. Harry could probably see that as he put an arm around her shoulders and kissed her temple.

Y/N wanted to thank Trix for what she’d said, but Trix had already disappeared. Liam and Louis also left to search for Layla and Niall, probably to film the pair arguing and put it on their Instagram stories. Even though they made fun of each other all the time, Y/N knew they were loyal and cared about each other. She wished she had a group of friends like that.

“What are you thinking about?” Harry’s voice pulled her out of her thoughts.

She turned back to him with a wide smile. “Nothing. I’m sorry I made you go out wearing this.”

“Nah, it’s fine.” He beamed. “I kinda like it now.”

“Liar.”

“It’s true.”

“Wear it on campus tomorrow then.”

“I will.”

Y/N blinked, taken aback by his nonchalance. “Really?”

Harry sighed as he took her face between his palms and kissed her once on the nose. “I’d walk around London naked if you told me to. Layla was right. I’m a simp for you, love.”

Y/N giggled, arms wrapped around his waist. “Well, I wouldn’t ask you to do such a thing. Don’t want all the ladies in London to go after my man.”

“Your man,” Harry said softly, a smile spreading his lips. “I like the sound of it.”

“Guys!”

Harry and Y/N both flinched and whipped their heads to the door. There stood a breathless Niall. “We’re watching a movie in the living room, if anyone wanna join,” Niall told everyone in the kitchen then narrowed his eyes at Harry. “Also, fuck you and your sweater, Styles. Now Layla’s mad at me. Not you, Y/N. You’re good.”

“I like him,” Y/N said as Niall ran off once again.

Harry rolled his eyes. “I don’t anymore,” he chuckled, gently petting Y/N’s hair. “Do you wanna stay and watch a movie with my friends or should we just go? Layla’s mad at Niall so she won’t notice our absence.”

Y/N shook her head. “No. I’d like to stay.”

Harry’s eyes went round when he realised she was being serious.

“It’s fun,” she added, stroking his hair. “I like your friends.”

“Really?” His eyes widened even more. “I was afraid they were too rude to you.”

“I know they were just teasing,” Y/N said. “Well, except for Layla.”

“Definitely not Layla,” Harry agreed. “She was born mean.”

Y/N giggled at the face Harry made with his tongue sticking out. “Well, your friends are so much fun. I like them. As rude and loud as they are.”

“That’s good, love,” Harry said with a sigh of content and relief. He pulled her into him again and kissed her twice on the forehead. “Let’s go, baby. There are still so many people who haven’t seen our ugly sweaters.”
