Prisoner of Azkaban
The stranger was wearing an extremely shabby set of wizard's robes that had been darned in several places. He looked ill and exhausted. Though quite young, his light brown hair was flecked with gray.
. . . Professor Lupin appeared to be holding a handful of flames. They illuminated his tired, gray face, but his eyes looked alert and wary.
Professor Lupin looked particularly shabby next to all the other teachers in their best robes.
Lupin smiled vaguely and placed his tatty old briefcase on the teacher's desk. He was as shabby as ever but looked healthier than he had on the train, as though he had had a few square meals.
Professor Lupin was back at work. It certainly looked as though he had been ill. His old robes were hanging more loosely on him and there were dark shadows beneath his eyes . . .
A ray of wintery sunlight fell across the classroom, illuminating Lupin's gray hairs and the lines on his young face.
Close-up, Harry saw that [Hermione] looked almost as tired as Lupin.
. . . [Hermione] had shadows like Lupin's under her eyes, and seemed constantly close to tears.
Order of the Phoenix
Though still quite young, Lupin looked tired and rather ill; he had more gray hair than when Harry had said good-bye to him, and his robes were more patched and shabbier than ever.
Harry remembered how much shabbier Lupin looked these days and his dislike of Umbridge deepened even further.
[in a flashback, whilst sitting for his O.W.L.s] He looked rather pale and peaky (was the full moon approaching?) and was absorbed in the exam: As he reread his answers he scratched his chin with the end of his quill, frowning slightly.
Next to Tonks was Lupin, his face pale, his hair graying, a long and threadbare overcoat covering a shabby jumper and trousers.
Half-Blood Prince
Harry's sixteenth birthday celebrations were marred by grisly tidings brought to the party by Remus Lupin, who was looking gaunt and grim, his brown hair streaked liberally with gray, his clothes more ragged and patched than ever.
Remus Lupin, who was thinner and more ragged-looking than ever, was sitting beside the fire, staring into its depths as though he could not hear Celestina's voice.
Deathly Hallows
. . . Lupin grayer, more lined. . .
[in a photo taken during his time at Hogwarts] On James's left was Lupin, even then a little shabby-looking, but he had the same air of delighted surprise at finding himself liked and included. Or was it simply because Harry knew how it had been, that he saw these things in the picture?
[upon sharing the news of his son’s birth] "I can't stay long, I must get back," said Lupin, beaming around at them all. He looked years younger than Harry had ever seen him.
[as he appears to Harry in the Resurrection Stone] Lupin was younger too, and much less shabby, and his hair was thicker and darker. He looked happy to be back in this familiar place, scene of so many adolescent wanderings.
