Quarantine Adventures

Since I’ve been stuck in quarantine for over a month, I’ve been very, very bored. I have been doing things from my list of activities I wrote in my first entry. I learned to spin a pen in my fingers, I’m teaching myself the piano, and I have learned to draw Kermit the frog from memory at any angle. And on the piano, so far I have learned Golden Winds, Never Gonna Give You Up, the Gravity Falls theme, Drift Away from the Steven Universe movie, and the Minecraft theme, Sweden. I have also been using this extra time to work on my art. I saw a video on YouTube where artist Rae Dizzle recreated the Mona Lisa using crayola crayons, and decided to try it for myself.

And it did NOT turn out well. It was HORRIBLE. Her forhead was huge, and her hands were so tiny...

There were so many things wrong with it.

But lets move on...

So another thing I’ve been doing to pass the time is reading. If you haven’t tried the Harry Potter series yet, I highly recommend it. The fantasy world that J.K. Rowling has creating is amazing. It seems so real, and it makes you wish it could be reality.

Why Minecraft is an Enjoyable Game

07/16/20 - Everyone has their own standards for what a video game should be like. While not everyone has the time to sit down and play, or they simply don’t want to, you can always tell what you like and dislike in a game. A good video game, or any piece of media, is nearly impossible to perfectly craft in a way that it appeals to every single audience. However, there are a few certain criteria a game could have that can cater to anyone.  One of the most well-known is Minecraft: Minecraft is so enjoyable to a huge audience due to its lack of ending, learning opportunities, chances to meet new people and friends, freedom and customizability, and how it caters to every demographic and enforces creativity.

Having no ending in a game might sound pointless at first, but for many people, other video games cause more stress than fun. Constantly believing that the only benefit you get out of a game is to "win," sets you in a competitive and aggressive mentality. The idea of losing at a game you spent so much time at would cause anyone to form an unusual amount of anger, ruining any fun it provided for you originally. Minecraft doesn't have a set ending, or any way to permanently lose. There is an infinite respawn feature, and there is no way to leave the world you worked so hard on. Without the constant fear in the back of your mind that there is a possibility you could lose everything, the game you're playing will become much more enjoyable. There is no chance to become burnt-out over Minecraft because of competition or fear. The pace of the game is based on your preferences, and yours only. 

It wouldn’t be uncommon for someone to begin to expect benefits out of playing a video game. A main one that Minecraft provides is the enforcing of creativity. An entire “gamemode” being created based on the popularity of the freedom and creativity you are given, having a 3D terrain with hundreds of blocks to choose from and no chance of dying is something anyone would appreciate. Like a blank canvas, it would be impossible to not become inspired staring at the infinite sandbox before you.Whether it's building your dream house, replicating the entire city of New York, or crafting the Mona Lisa with blocks of clay, you will always have a new project ready to work on. Anyone with Minecraft has access to this version of the game, and it's easy to spend hours designing and constructing whatever you please. Some users have even made working smartphones, which accept real calls, and calculators in-game, helped by the advanced redstone feature, which is essentially simplified in-game coding. Minecraft’s diverse creative mode is guaranteed to have something to suit your niche. 

Connecting to the previous criteria, Minecraft has such a broad spectrum of features and difficulties that it can cater to every single demographic of video game players. Minecraft is a simple, calming game that you can fall asleep to while playing, but it can also be a genuine challenge. With many difficulties to choose from, like peaceful, easy, normal, hard, and hardcore, the most causal players to the most competitive will have their needs pleased with this game. Your world can either spawn with zero monsters, or become infested with zombies who break down doors. The important thing to mention is that any difficulty chosen is entirely up to you, and can be changed at any time in-game. Working back to the previously mentioned challenge of Minecraft, despite causing rage and rivalries, some people might appreciate the optional competitive side of Minecraft. The game offers an entire community of tournaments, competitions, and practice servers for competing with other players. No matter the age, or no matter the play style, Minecraft is an accessible game for everyone. Along with the gameplay itself, the controls and visuals are also very simple and easy to get a grasp of. Minecraft is also available on most platforms, including your smartphone, so even if you can’t afford a computer or a Playstation, you can still have a chance at playing. 

If playing by yourself in your own world isn’t your idea of fun, Minecraft also features a multiplayer option. It is super simple to connect with others: You can play minigames on public servers by just typing in an IP address, and then you are instantly connected to a community of over 1 million daily players. You can create and join an array of custom maps, including almost every genre, like horror, adventure, and puzzle. More servers are popping up everyday, with diverse games, languages, and play styles. If you're interested in a certain mini-game on a server, you can be positive that there is someone else out there who shares your interest. Even if you don’t like playing with strangers, you can simply play in a private world with just your closest friends.

Minecraft also features an educational and academic side to it. Minecraft: Education Edition is being used by teachers to teach simple concepts of science, math, and even general lectures by hosting a server and making a virtual classroom. This version features a complete periodic table with reactive and interactive elements, books, and everything you need to create a lab. This can appeal to students who learn best by having visual references. The creative freedom of Minecraft is one that is appreciated by many children, and can encourage learning by thinking their own way and not being restricted by certain guidelines. 

A feature any good video game should have is freedom. Having to follow a set of rules or a certain story can get redundant to most players. Minecraft is completely customizable, both within gameplay and outside of it. You can create your own avatar pixel by pixel, you can customize your own texture back, adjusting the appearance of the game, and you can even download mods and datapacks, completely transforming the game and adding new features for free. If you want to make the grass pink and the sky red, it’s possible. If you want to have the entire cast of Harry Potter as you and your friends’ avatars, it’s possible. If you want to add an extra 150 animals with a mod on top of the already plentiful assortment of animals in the base game, it’s possible. Nothing is stopping you from creating and designing the game as your own, and there are no rules to tell you what you can and cannot do. Minecraft wouldn’t be the free and creative game it is if it had a list of rules or a story mode you had to follow, which is probably the reason why it keeps increasing in popularity each year. 

Again, you can never please everybody when making a video game. Some people like to play casually, some like to play competitively. Some people enjoy a purely fun experience, while others might want to learn and benefit from the game they are playing. A good and enjoyable video game can take all of these criteria and combine it into one, forming a game like Minecraft. To create an enjoyable video game to suit everyone is to take into account all of the little details that certain groups might enjoy, and with the freedom and customizability of Minecraft, everyone can find their place in the game.
