Matthew 2:1 - 2:23

The Visit of the Wise Men

1 So Jesus having been born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod’s kingship, look the astrologers from the East being in Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is the one having been born the king of the Jews? Because we saw his star in the East and we came to kneel before him.” 3 And hearing this, the king Herod was troubled and all of Jerusalem with him, 4 and having gathered all the temple leaders and scribes of the people, he asked of them where the Messiah is going to be born. 5 And they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea. As it has been written through the prophets

6 And you, Bethlehem, the land of Judea, you are by no means least in the leaders of Judea. Because out of you, the one leading will come out, who will shepherd my Israeli people. 

7 Then Herod secretly having called the astrologers, he asked of them exactly the time of the shining star. 8 And sending them into Bethlehem, he said, “Having traveled, search carefully for the child. And when you may have found him, message me, and I having come may kneel before him. 9 And the one ones listening to the king went out and look, the star, which they saw in the East, lead them until having arrived, it stood over where the child was. 10 And having seen the star, they rejoiced greatly with exceeding joy. 11 And coming into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and having fallen to their knees they revered him and having opened their treasurerys for him, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been divinely instructed through a dream not to return to Herod; they returned though other roads into their country.

The Flight to Egypt

13 So as they were returning, look! An angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph saying, “Awaking, take the child and his mother and flee into Egypt and be there until I speak to you. Because Harod is going to seek the child to kill him.” 14 And having awakened he took the child and his mother during the night and they departed to Egypt. 15 And they were there until the death of Herod. In order that the thing having been spoken by the Lord through the prophets might be fulfilled saying, “I have called my son from Egypt.”

The Slaying of the Infants

16 Then Herod having seen that he had been deceived by the astrologers, he was greatly enraged and having sent out to kill all the children in Bethlehem and in all the region of it from two years old to under, from the time which he had learned from the astrologers. 17 Then the word from Jeromiah the Prophet was fulfilled saying

18 A voice in Ramah was heard, weeping and wailing greatly; Rachel crying for her children, and she did not wish to be comforted, for they are not alive. 

The Return from Egypt

19 And Heord having died, look, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20 saying, “Having awoken, take the child and his mother and go into the land of Israel. For the ones seeking the life of the child have died.” 21 So he, having awoken, took the child and his mother and went into Israel. 22 And having heard that the Archelaus rules Judea in place of his father Herod, Joseph was afraid to go there; but having been divinely commanded in a dream, he withdrew to the lands of Galilee. 23 And having come, he settled in a city called Nazareth. Therefore the word of the prophets was fulfilled that he will be called a Nazareen.

Today was a great day as we finally made it to Jerusalem. On the way, we first explored Magdala, near Tiberius on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, a first-century synagogue. We then visited Harod’s Spring where God whittled Gideon’s mighty men down to 300. There were incredible ruins at Bet She’an which was one of ten Roman cities in the time…

May 10 Israel

May 10 - Tel Aviv to Haula Valley - May 10 we said goodbye to Tel Aviv and headed north. Our first stop was Cesarea, an ancient harbor with Roman and Byzantine ruins. We took an extensive tour of the excavated area and were impressed with the beauty of the ruins and the preservation process. In one restored amphitheater there were building adaptations along with a sound system where concerts are performed in this amazing site. We saw where King Harod, from the Roman times, 30 B.C., built a palace and offices overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. A hippodrome, where chariot races took place, is part of the Cesarean complex along with a current excavation of Roman temples. Our second stop was north of Haifa in the Druze village of Julis. In the village our guide arranged for a lunch in a Druze home and we participated in the preparation of the meal while learning about the Druze religion and beliefs. The Druze are not Muslim and use the Old Testament along with other beliefs such as reincarnation. There are about 1.5 million Druze worldwide with the concentration in Israel, Lebanon and Syria. Our group enjoyed our Druze cooked lunch and then it was off to Safed. Safed is located in the far north of Israel near the Sea of Galilee and is located on the mountaintop with panoramic views. Safed is one of the four holy cities in Israel and where Kabbalah was founded. Kabbalah is the understanding of the meaning of the Old Testament and becoming better people in the world. In Safed we visited two synagogues dating from the 16th century and walked some of the narrow cobblestone streets. After a short visit to Safed we were off to our hotel for the next two nights. Our stay was in the Haula Valley between the upper Galilee Mountains and the Golan Heights. In the valley we were able to see how amazing it was for the Israelis to reclaim this once swampy valley and transform it to a verdant area for farms with wheat, citrus trees, corn and many other crops. Our hotel was built in 2016 and has all the modern conveniences - beautiful pool area, weight room and well appointed rooms. The buffet dinner was a culinary delight of Israeli dishes and a nice way to end the day.
