Cut magazine interview, march 2023 issue
Feature; films from 2023 that no one has seen yet ; zom100
The popular manga <Zombie 100 ~ 100
Things I Want to Do Before I Become a
Zombie>, written by Haro Aso and drawn by Kentaro Takahata, will be made into a live-action film on Netflix.
Eiji Akaso plays Akira Tendo, a protagonist
who works as if he were dead at a black
company and later becomes active in a
zombie-infested world.
Akaso always seems to radiate joy when he
talks about the roles he's played. He said, "It
was good to be in this production, it was
good to be able to play this role". He says so,
but I want to say to the character of the
story, "It's really good that you acted by Akaso san" In this work, which is called a
'refreshing comedy zombie horror', how did
Akaso love his role and survive the world as
Akira? And, in future interviews about this
work, I'll be asked again and again, 'What are
the 100 things Akaso san wants to do
before he becomes a zombie?' As a result of
asking the question faster than anywhere
else, the answer was more impressive than
expected! i look forward to.
(Looking through his interview in the
December 2022 issue of <CUT>, which
appeared last time) … That's right… Oh,
yes! i look forward to.
In the last interview, you talked about how
you felt uneasy about the timing of the
NHK serial TV novel "Maiagare" which
overlapped with other things.
That's right, I've been reading it for a while
now, and I thought, 'I'm thinking about it~
around this time'. It already feels like a little
bit of memories (laughs).
It was a few months ago because it was
covered in the fall of 2022, but has your
mindset changed a lot since then?
It's changed, it's completely different.
Previously, I had no time to deal with
multiple works at the same time. There were
times when I felt like I was shrinking as I took out what was in the drawer called me… I wonder if I've been able to afford it a little.
There are a lot of things to learn in the field
now, so I really enjoy every day because l
have a good input and a good output.
What do you think is the biggest reason
why you changed your mind so much in
such a short period of time?
I think I got out of trouble. I think it's because I got into it after thinking, thinking, and doing everything I could, so I was able to
acknowledge myself.
Thank you for your powerful words.
Expectations are gathering that Akira in
<<Zoom 100> will be a very powerful role,
completely different from the warm and
delicate role of Takashi Umezu in <Maiagare!>, which is currently on air.
Have you read the original manga?
I read it zom100 has a strong survival
element, but Akira shines as a positive
protagonist who says 'do what you want to
do and die'. It was a work that made me feel
that the world can change depending on my
mind under any circumstances.
In the original work, instead of being afraid
of the zombie-infested world, Akira is
depicted in a comical way.
I haven't seen it because it's not finished yet,
but the video I saw in the camera check has
a reality to the zombies… I think there will be
a comical part, but I'm looking forward to
how it will be completed in the end.
When it comes to acting as Akira, do you
have any sense of doing it out of the
ordinary for fun?
Each of the characters is living their best life
in their own way. Maybe I should say it's
comedic when I look at that serious side
from a distance, but it's fun. So, as an actor, I
acted without trying to be funny.
'Isn't (this) fun?' It's not that I'm acting with
the feeling of saying, it's fun that I'm acting
really hard.
Just having a bunch of zombies around
Akira, who is thrilled after being freed from
the black corporation, makes this a fun
scene! I thought. Even though I'm stepping
on my bike with a smile, in fact, zombies are
chasing me from behind. The same thing is
interesting.
How did you calculate and act the
temperature so that it can be fun when
you look at it with a sense of bird's eye
view?
I consulted with director Ishida (Yusuke) in
detail about both the image from a bird's eye
view and the subjective feelings as Akira. I
really enjoyed the discussion with the
director. The director is a passionate person,
so maybe he was more like Akira than I am
(laughs). Be full of energy.
What did you hear from the director?
The first thing I heard was "It's the eyes". You
said you wanted to express Akira with the
light in your eyes. When he was at the black
company, his eyes didn't have any light, but
then the light gradually increased as if it was
contrasting… or the strong power felt in his
eyes. You said that you wanted to capture all
of Akira's expressions in your eyes.
When you heard the phrase "acting on the
eyes", did you do the same exercise in
front of the mirror and strain your eyes?
No, I didn't (laughs). Even if it's the eyes, I
don't think there is anything that shows the
inside of a person as much as the eyes, so like accepted that saying "with the eyes" means "do it with the heart" on the contrary. Of course, I think there will be scenes where
you have to physically strain your eyes, but I
still think that the important thing is the
heart.
In the original work, in addition to the fun
of overcoming the worst situation with an
unexpected development, the scene
where a family member or a loved one
suddenly passed by in the heart was
impressive even in an extraordinary
space. Is there such a description in this
work?
I think Akira's human side will be drawn
more prominently. Not only are the tense
scenes with the zombies drawn, but the
parts where Akira is depressed or faces
other people with human emotions are also
drawn with great care. If Akira's guidelines
such as "I want to enjoy this situation" and "I
want to treat my colleagues with respect"
are shaken even a little, the viewer will not
be able to follow along with "What is this
person thinking?" I think it's the same. In
order not to become a character who just
looks forward and runs and breaks through, I
talked to the director several times about the
delicate parts of his heart, and I was paying
attention even when I was acting.
You were conscious of remaining human.
I thought that it would be difficult to
sympathize with if I acted with the feeling of
being too (flat) 'character'. I hope that you
will empathize with 'A normal person would
think this way in a situation like this' or 'Take
an action like this', and experience (like
Akira) how to look forward together in this
world of zombies, find the light and live. I acted with that heart in mind.
What was the atmosphere like with the
performers?
There were many scenes where the three of
us were together :Shiraishi (Mai) and
Yanagi (Shuntaro)-kun, but there was also
the fact that the relationship changed as the
story progressed, so it was neither too close
nor too far away, but there was a sense of
distance… Basically, it felt like Yanagi-kun
and I were joking around, and Shiraishi-san
was watching over it. In the middle of
filming, the three of us watch a hypnotism
video and try it together, or watch viral
dance videos on social media. When the staffmembers call me, I reply with "Yes!" (playfully in a high voice) (laughs). … at the level of middle school students. Still, when we started filming, we talked properly, including the director. It was a place where the pace was well controlled.
Who initiated these pranks?
Everyone, no matter who they were. Is this
site a festival for each scene? Because it
was a luxurious set and location that made
me want to, I was able to shoot from late at
night until morning. Everyone was in high spirits that I felt like I was becoming an idiot little by little (laughs).
When shooting non-daily works, that kind
of atmosphere might be the correct
answer.
Yes. It feels like a screw is missing, and I feel
that the distance has narrowed from there.
Also, Mr. Kitamura (Kazuki) led the team well
in the beginning. Mr. Kitamura took the
initiative to create an atmosphere where
everyone could gather and talk, and after a
few people talked, it seemed that all the cast
were gathered and talking. The filming site
was fun, so I thought, 'Is it over already?' I
was about to think. I think it was thanks to
Kitamura-san that we were able to do that.
He really was a big brother.
In the last interview, you said, "People
around me say that I look like Akira" on set.
In which part did you hear that you
resembled him?
Tension was high during the filming, so I
guess people said it after seeing that. And at the site , I was always saying: "I want to light a bonfire!", "I want to bungee jump!" I kept saying what I wanted to do, so I wonder if that's the point.
By the way, Akaso san said, "100 things I
want to do before becoming a zombie"…
can't hear all of them, so may I ask you
about five today?
(Fingers folded) I want to see the Northern
Lights, I want to see the Pyramids, I want to
go to Machu Picchu… They all turn into
historical sites (laughs). Also, I want to ride a
large bike and, finally, I want to fly an
airplane. As expected, Tom Cruise was cool
(laughs). I want to become a pilot, but it will
be difficult to do from now on, so I thought it
would be okay if I borrowed a little bit before
becoming a zombie and tried to fly and
become a zombie as it is (laughs).
The airplane is a bit different, but
other than that, I think I could do it if I had
time.
Oh, I will…
No, I thought that was good. Because I
think you are doing what you can. As for
Akira in the story, he can't convey his
feelings to people he cares about until
he becomes a zombie, or there are things
he couldn't tell his family, and that's
something he can't do because of a
problem in his heart.
There are none of those things. In that
sense, I think I'm living without regrets to the point where I think it's okay to die now. I also convey what I think properly, and meetpeople I want to meet. There are so many things I can't do because I don't have time physically, so I really don't have enough time in my life. I want to live to be 120 years old…
I think it's great to be able to confidently
say, 'I'm doing what I can'.
To put it bluntly, it's about cleaning the
house, what I can't do (laughs). Other than
that, I feel like I'm doing what I need to do
right. No regrets.
This time, as a special feature of movies
that no one has seen yet, we are
introducing works that are scheduled to
be released and released in 2023,Akaso san, do you have any references or people to come across new works?
Lately, it's been rare for me to watch a movie
without seeing a preview, just following my
heart's desire, or watching the package
because I'm attracted to it. However, I am
watching it after receiving recommendations
from various people. Opportunities for me to
step out are dwindling.
Time passes in an instant just by looking
at the recommended items. It seems like
you travel frequently to shoot Asadora, do
you also watch while moving?
I watch anime a lot while on the go, so I've
been watching <BLEACH, Millennium Blood
Battle> recently. The drawing is better than I
thought, so I thought, 'Are you making this
quality into an animation? While thinking
that it must be difficult for the people who
make it.
While enjoying the work, the thoughts of
the person who makes it.
When looking at a piece of art, it's good to
think about how long it took, how much
sleep I didn't get… However, I also feel that
the hurdles that viewers are demanding are
getting higher and higher, so my heart is
struggling. Even though I myself have
nothing to do with the animation industry at
all, 'the artist here!' If the same thing is
posted on the Internet, 'That's okay!'
(Laughs). He makes wonderful works, but
thinking that he will work even harder to
respond to the voices of viewers, I feel a
feeling that cannot be expressed in words.
But now I'm scared of Takashi's loss
This is the first time we have interviewed
Akaso san since the December issue when he appeared on the cover. In terms of time, it
was only a few months ago, but maybe it's
because you've been digesting many works
in a row, from <Ishiko and Haneo>, <Maigare!>, and this time <Zom 100>,
"Something feels like it's been a long time. "
He looked back at the interview at the time.
However, since he is concentrating on each
work, even for a short period of time, you
may have felt from this interview that each
role is strongly alive and breathing within Akaso san Actually, Akaso,San even on the way to the location for the photo shoot, he talked about the work he appeared in and his
overflowing feelings for the role, and I was
happy to feel that "Oh, you really are working
on the work with love." . I'm really looking
forward to Akira 'Akaso' from <Zom 100>
from now on!
#this is a long but good interview#can't wait for this movie#seems a lot of fun and with a great budget as special of Nextflix#Looking forward
