Konkan Kada — A Marvel In The Heart Of Sahyadri
I don’t put myself in the category of “Adventurer” or if I have to use even more cheesy word “Wanderlust”, but yeah, I do enjoy trekking, travelling, whenever I get a chance to do so.
Travelling really does transport you to different zone altogether, and sometimes, if you are lucky enough, it leaves you with experiences to cherish. So I am always keen to pick up my backpack whenever I get the opportunity.
On my very first trek itself, I had heard one of my fellow trekker going all gaga about Harishchandra Gad and Konkan Kada. And since that day, Konkan Kada was on my wish list, and last weekend was the day when I put a check mark on it.
Tumblr media
Konkan Kada! It is actually really difficult or rather impossible to describe the magnitude of it’s exquisiteness. A photograph can secure the moment, but I doubt if it can actually convey the contentment which we felt when we were sitting there literally on the edge. It is an experience which can only be experienced.
Although, the state of contentment is the end result of adversity.
It involves sweat, hell lot of water, soreness, a lot of fucks, a lot of “Why on earth did i even bother to come out of my cosy fucking bed?” And on some special occasions a drop of 9 committed co-trekkers out of 12
Yeah!
And when you realize 9 out of 12 of your fellow trekkers have bailed on you, your morale on the day before the trek is skyrocketing. *Sarcasm*
But as they say, “Trek plan simply cannot be cancelled.”
And then, there were three. We managed to defeat the object which has massive gravity in the morning i.e bed and caught a 4:24 AM Khopoli Train from CSMT (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus)
One thing I love about trekking is, it’s direct correspondence with public transport. Of course you can hire a private car and have a chilling conveyance with your buddies, it has it’s own kick. But public transport has it’s own rawness. Rawness of people living in raw world with raw experiences, raw perspectives, a contrast to our safeguarded world.
If you are lucky enough a 5 min conversation with a stranger in a local train or a local bus can actually bless you with a whole new perspective to look at things in life.
So….. After catching a local train at an ungodly hour, it’s an hour trip to Kalyan and then a trip of 2–2 1/2 hours from Kalyan to Khubi Phata via ST. A roller coaster ride towards Malshej Ghat with lots of lots of turns which were only felt by us as we were mastering the art of napping.
One of the best nap I ever had.
And we reached Khubi Phata by 9:00 AM
Tumblr media
And still we had 4–5 Km to cover before we reach the base village- Khireshwar. You can test your luck with local villagers’ cars as an alternative to reach base village otherwise be ready for long walk.
And finally we reached the base village, had our breakfast and geared ourselves up for Tolar Khind which is the route towards Harishchandra Gad, with “Eye Of The Tiger” in the background. Well…. it sounded much better in my head.
Harishchandra Gad! A little about this marvel.
Harishchandra Gad is a fort in the Ahmednagar district of India. It’s a very ancient fort. Various Indian Ancient Scriptures Matsya Purana, Agni Puranaand Skanda Purana have references of the fort. It is said that The Great Sage Changdev who created Tatvasaar used to meditate on fort in 14th Century. Harishchandragad was captured by the Marathas in 1747 from the Moguls. The fort is blessed with incredible sculpted caves and temples and of course the main attraction Konkan Kada.
After our breakfast it was all about 3–3 1/2 hours of hearing your breathing, feeling your elevated pulse, letting your sweat merge with red soil of rugged nature, falling on the rocks, bearing the scars, letting your muscles go stiff and sore, and enjoying lime water on occasions.
Tumblr media
As they say, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. And I must say, when you come across a stall with guy selling lime water on it in the middle of the trek, its not lime water that he is selling it’s actually nectar.
The trek sure is physically demanding, but thankfully with constant arrow marks made on rocks saves a lot of time and energy. And sometimes if you are lucky enough you can be accompanied by a guide like Moti. Which is even better.
When we reached the top, the first thing which we noticed was Harichandreshwar Temple. A beautiful piece of architecture right in the heart of the fort.
Tumblr media
We stretched ourselves up a little inside the temple. The contentment which we experienced inside the temple is indescribable. We absorbed that art as much as we could and we left the beautiful architecture for another one. Kedar Ling.
Tumblr media
This is exactly how it is there in the photograph. The water around the Shivling is stone cold and 3 out of 4 pillars around the Shivling are shattered and only one pillar is still intact. As per the myth, the 4 pillars represent 4 Yugas (Era) Satyayuga, Tretayuga, Dwaparyuga and Kaliyuga. Every time when an era comes to an end the pillar representing that particular era gets shattered. The last pillar representing the current era i.e Kaliyuga will get shattered when this era, Kaliyuga, will come to an end. Spooky right?
After seeing various caves around the fort we finally set ourselves up for the main reason for which we bared all that physical exhaustion, Konkan Kada!
After a 25–30 min of walk from Harichandreshwar Temple, we reached the marvel. And as it was expected we were stunned!
Tumblr media
A stunning vertical cliff facing west and looking down upon the Konkan. The cliff is not just vertical it’s an overhang. Hence it literally looks like a Cobra’s Hood if one sees it from its front.
After all the photo sessions for social media, we just sat there in silence and watched the sun dissolving in that orange blue sky, while wind constantly singing it’s own song in our ears.
That larger than life miracle of nature made me realise, how our existence is equivalent to a particle in this beautiful and humongous mess of nature. I just wanted the time to stop there and there itself. It was all about soaking up that moment. It was exactly like what Rumi said,
“The Moment Is All There Is.”
One of the things about trekking which I find fascinating is, how we can actually relate it with life.
I mean isn’t it all about conquering our own mountains so that we can experience the beautiful peak of life?

Cloud special Harishchandra Gad Trek
Overview Short Info: Region: Malshej. Height: 4500 ft. (approx.) Grade: Medium. Base Village: Khireshwar. Cost: Rs.1800/-   About: Harishchandragad: The fort is quite ancient, considered to be from the medieval period.  The various Puranas (ancient scriptures) like Matsyapurana, Agnipurana and Skandapurana include many references about Harishchandragad. The Great sage Changdev (creator of the epic Tatvasaar) used to meditate on Taramati/Rohidas in 14th century. The caves are also from the same period. Harishchandra gad was captured by the Marathas in 1747 from the Moguls. Taramati: Also known as Taramanchi. This is the top most point on the fort. It is the second highest peak in Maharashtra after kalsubai. Leopards are seen in the forests beyond this peak. From here we can have a glimpse of the whole range of Naneghat and the forts near Murbad and Napta twin peaks,Ghodishep (865 meters),Ajoba (1375 meters),Kulang fort (1471 meters)in the north near the Kasara region. Konkan Kada (Konkan cliff): The most fascinating spot on this fort is this cliff, which has always fascinated many people from many years. The cliff faces west and looks down upon the Konkan with a breathtaking view of the surrounding region and sunset. This cliff is not just vertical; it is an overhang, almost like a cobra’s hood. One amazing phenomenon that can be observed at this place is the vertical cloud burst, in which the clouds nearing the cliff get sucked into the pit fall area below are thrown vertically into the sky reaching more than 50 feet (15 m). Kedareshwar: The cave of Kedareshwar has a big Shivlinga, which is totally surrounded by water. It is quite difficult to reach the Shivlinga because the water is ice-cold. There are sculptures carved out here. Local legend holds that when the forth piller breaks, the world will come to an end.   INCLUSIONS/EXCLUSIONS What we'll give. What we won't What is included in the tour Meal: Sat/Sun Breakfast: Theplas or Kanda-poha & tea on availabili... Read more

When the concrete jungle of Mumbai starts to make us cringe, we leave aside everything and wish to escape someplace where the level of oxygen in the air isn’t harmful and the place emits good vibes and calmness.
On one such occasion when the city chaos started closing in on us and choking us, we tried escaping to a hidden gem of Maharashtra.  Around 150 Kms away from Mumbai lies the hidden gem – Bhandardara in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra. It is also home to Mount Kalsubai which is the highest peak of Maharashtra and is also referred to as the “Everest of Maharashtra” Considering we both knew this place it wasn’t a tough decision to decide and shortlist our escapade this time.  We drove down to Bhandardara during our mini Diwali vacation on our 2 wheelers. We started at 4ish in the evening and managed to reach here by 8:30 with a few food breaks.
  Mumbai to Bhandardara
After a Scenic and smooth ride through the Mumbai Nashik highway, one needs to cover a very rough patch of Road towards right from Ghoti Naka leading to this hidden gem, Bhandardara.  A place that gives you good vibes and calms your soul.  The road is adventurous and scenic since we crossed Kasara Ghat and then the edgy rough patch till Bhandardara with a view of Kalsubai, Ratangad, Harishchandra gad fort etc.
The specialty of this getaway is the Arthur Lake that is formed by a dam constructed during the British rule on river Pravara. It is a very clear and placid lake which is bounded by thick canopied forests of the Sahyadri hills. It provides a natural environment, mountains, waterfalls and countless other historic spots near the dam.
  Upon reaching Bhandardara, we, as usual, went without any pre-bookings ventured out looking for stay options, after discovering a decent accommodation to dump our bags and get freshened up we went galavanting around spending the major part of our night on the pier of the lake. The temperature started dropping drastically while we enjoyed our long chats and some light snacks under the star-spangled sky. We finally wrapped up and went to our respective hotel to catch some sleep before our long adventurous day to begin.
Stay/ Accommodation
There are ample of lodging and a few hotels/ resorts available in Bhandardara but it isn’t  too commercial which is the whole beauty of this hill station.  You will find options from budget to mid-range  accommodations
MTDC Holiday Resort: It is one of the most popular accommodations in the hill station. It offers clean rooms that are affordable. Being a state govt option they naturally provide the best view of the location, its right up on the hill and overlooks the lake. It has options from Dorm to budget rooms to family suites that overlook the beautiful Bhandardara Lake.  It also has a cafeteria type restaurant that serves basic comfort food and nothing fancy.
Anandvan Resort: It’s a mid-range hotel offering good rooms and amenities. They even have a buffet spread in their restaurant and the location is perfect for relaxation. Though it is right next to MTDC, it doesn’t have the full view of the lake.
If you decide to take a stroll in the area behind MTDC you will discover a more populated market area with various accommodation which is very easy on the pocket too. Though they won’t offer a view if it’s only for dumping your bags and exploring further, these options are pretty reasonable with a variety of restaurants around.
We had the most reasonable and scrumptious Veg & Nonveg food at a local restaurant in the market are.
On day 2 we started around 9 am, had our breakfast at the same restaurant and started our journey of completing the circle around Arthur lake. The road stretches to 50 km encircling the Arthur Lake in a closed loop pattern, a tour to this road will take you to various attraction points with a spectacular view throughout the journey. If you leave post breakfast it will take you roughly 7 hours to cover the entire patch, view most of these sites and be back after a good long bathing at the lake.
Bhandardara Encircled Road
On your journey of covering the loop of Arthur lake, you will also find a lot of small villages and huts after every few kilometers with the villagers.
After our gala time and refreshing bath at the lake, we headed back to our hotel rooms. The dip at this lake will ensure giving enough nourishment to your skin and hair as the same is unpolluted.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
  We had our dinner at a local restaurant and headed out to find a camping spot. We spent the night in tents and bonfire that was set ahead of MTDC resort giving a more clear view of the lake and a spectacular sight to witness the sunset, you are assured to wake up to an amazing sight of the locals washing their clothes, children diving into the lake and people doing their mundane chores collaboratively.
  Sightseeing & attractions  – Randha Falls, Umbrella Falls, Ghatghar, Kalsubai Peak, Ratanwadi village, Amruteshwar temple, Ratangad fort etc
Wilson Dam: Built-in 1910 across River Pravara, Wilson Dam is situated at a height of 150 m above sea level. It’s one of the oldest dams in the country. The opening of gates creates two 60 to 80 feet cascades of water that plummet to the rocks below. It’s a spectacular view. Tourists can amble in the circular garden located at the base of the dam. Two waterfalls also cascade down the dam during the monsoon.
Randha Falls: Randha Falls is a good waterfall to visit. The roaring River Pravara descends down from a height of 170 ft into a gorge. However, the waterfalls are best viewed during monsoons and is dried on other parts of the year.
Ghatghar: Located 22 km from Bhandardara, Ghatghar is a viewpoint in the area. It offers views of the Sahyadri ranges.
Mount Kalsubai: from Bhandardara Tourist can see the highest peak of the Sahyadri range, mount Kalsubai. Kalsubai with its height and view is popular for trekking and so are the hills near Kalsubai. The trek is physically demanding, as Bhandardara is located on a hill and to reach this place one has to do lots of trekking.
Amruteshwar Temple: Amruteshwar Temple is dedicated to Shiva and is 8 km away from Arthur Lake. It is in a beautiful setting, surrounded by peaks. The temple is believed to be over 1200 years old and is carved out of stone. It was constructed by the Shilahaar family. Do pay a visit to this temple when in this hill station or just visit to admire its architecture that still stands strong even today.
Ratnagad:  Located near the MTDC resort, Ratangad Fort was captured by Shivaji and is over 2,000 years old. The fort offers a bird’s eye view of the hill station and has a natural rock peak called ‘eye of the needle’.
Sandhan Vally: Located 25 km from Bhandardara, behind Samrad village. It’s a beautiful valley amidst the magnifieciently beautiful shayadri range. Sandhan Valley, also known as Valley of suspense or Valley of Shadow, is one of the greatest canyons in the splendid setting of Sahyadri Western Ghats
The best time to visit Bhandardara is from September to February when the weather is convenient to explore the outdoors post monsoon. It is very hot and dry during the summer season from March to May.  We once visited this during May it looked nothing less than a mini Grand Canyon to us.
Things to carry- Comfortable shoes, extra clothes if you intend to take a dip in the lake, some extra sheets if you plan to go camping here.
    Boundless Beauty- Bhandardara When the concrete jungle of Mumbai starts to make us cringe, we leave aside everything and wish to escape someplace where the level of oxygen in the air isn't harmful and the place emits good vibes and calmness.

“Never measure the height of a mountain until you have reached the top. Then you will see how low it was”.
(Dag Hammarskjold)
#gallery-0-43 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-43 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-43 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-43 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
So, after the morning chores were completed, we had breakfast and tea and started preparing for the trek ahead. There was lot of excitement as it was everybody’s dream to climb mount Kalsubai, the highest peak of Maharashtra and the dream was about to come true. Around 8:30 we started our trek. Going through the village, we crossed a small water stream and reached the base of the jungle. One can easily identify the trek trails through the jungle. It was not raining but the clouds above and the beautiful rainy atmosphere gave us tremendous boost to move forward energetically. After climbing around 15 minutes, we had our first stop at the big kalsubai temple. This temple is built for the people who cannot make it to the top to take blessing of the original temple of kalsubai. So, they take the blessing from this temple and return.
#gallery-0-44 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-44 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-44 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-44 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
After half-an-hour we reached a plateau and that was also our first resting point. From there the view of surrounding mountain ranges, covered with clouds, was just awesome. From here one can see the ladders that are built on the rock patches to make the trek bit easy. Gradually and steadily we kept on climbing in the mud trail and jungle surrounding us. The showers in between were making our climb more joyful. Although it was monsoon, the humidity was a bit more and it was exhausting us quickly leading to consumption of water continuously. Water being the most important of the things a trekker carries in his back pack during summit, needs to be consumed judiciously as in almost all treks in Sahyadris, there are few potable water bodies. The climb was not tough. It was a bit steep but not difficult. But the walk was never ending. The showers in between the trek were adding up to refresh our mind and forget the lengthy trek ahead. The surrounding atmosphere was filled with amazing views of green nature and grey clouds. We were just travelling through the clouds now.
#gallery-0-45 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-45 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-45 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-45 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
After climbing for more than an hour, we came across first iron ladder. Iron ladders are fixed by the Government to climb the difficult rock patches at some places. Some hardcore trekker still avoids the iron ladders and climbs the rock patches for additional thrill. Again, we start ascending towards our summit using the ladders and negotiating a few rock patches. From here the trek is bit hard. After a 30-minute climb, we again halted at a point. At this moment, we are completely inside the cloud and the visibility was hardly few meters. Our trek leaders were constantly counting the group members just to make sure that everybody is trekking together. It is certainly difficult and challenging to lead a big group and take everybody together to achieve the summit. The cloudy atmosphere and the visibility of few meters was adding to this challenge. But the hard-core experience of our trek leader was coming to help and we were maintaining a constant speed. After trekking for more than 2.30 hours, we came across a well full of cold water just before the striking distance of summit. We had a rest of around 5-10 minutes and washed our faces with the cold water. It was an uplifting and refreshing experience. On this spot, a vendor was busy preparing fresh Kanda Bhaji and Tea for serving the tired souls. At this point of summit, it was the right time and spot for some munching as the breakfast was already consumed trekking this much distance. Some of us had some kanda bhaji and tea from this vendor. Savoring hot plate of Kanda Bhaji (Onion Pakoda) and a cup of tea in such a beautiful atmosphere was certainly a delightful experience in itself. One should never miss such an experience even though the aftereffects of oily onion pakodas are known. Sometimes you need to compromise on certain things to relish the pleasure in life.
#gallery-0-46 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-46 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-46 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-46 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
After trekking through few rock patches and ladders we reached the final ladder to the pinnacle. A few ladders on the way were fiercely 80 degree vertical, and it was a testing time for some of our trekkers. The fear of monkeys while climbing the ladders was also adding up to the excitement. Finally, we reached the peak and we were up above the cloud now. Topmost point of Maharashtra! A staggering 5,400 Ft above M.S.L. We were exhausted but when we looked around, all the tiredness went away in a flash. The clouds were everywhere on the mountain ranges and a sense of being on the Everest of Maharashtra was progressing fast. Unbelievable!!!
There is a small temple of Kalsubai on the top. Pinnacle top is mostly covered with rock patches where you can sit down and enjoy the nature and clouds down below. And we did the same things. Just sat down quite, closed our eyes and got lost.
It was just mesmerizing to view the surrounding from the top. On the west side, there were beautiful peaks of Alang, Madan, Kulang. On the east side, there is Bittangad, Patta fort and Aundha. On the south side, you can see Harishchandra Gad, Ratan Gad, Ajoba, Kumabai’s Khind. Also, the view of vast backwaters of Bhandardara Dam was quite enchanting. I was really humbled by the vastness and beauty of the nature.
After a while, some of us went inside the tiny temple of Kalsubai and sat quietly for 5-10 minutes with eyes closed. It was quite an heavenly experience.
#gallery-0-47 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-47 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-47 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-47 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Once we had all the members on the top, we had a group photo in front of Kalsubai temple. The wind was blowing at a forceful pressure almost trying to blow us away. It took us 3.5 hours to reach the summit. The never-ending trail finally ended with the summit.
We were all hungry but still everybody was just roaming around soaking in the beauty of the nature. Somebody from us reminded all that we must finish up with lunch now and start descending as early as possible. We had packed thepala and pickle for lunch. Everybody enjoyed the lunch in the company of beautiful nature. After finishing the lunch, we had a small rest before we started descending. We spent around 1.5 hours on the top as the top has very limited space and was getting crowded.
Know how to backpack here
Descending was easy as compared to climbing. At certain points, the steep descends very risky due to wet surface. The ladders were slippery due to pouring rain and everybody cautiously negotiated them. It took us around 2.5 hours to descend safely and come to the Bari village. The time was 4.00 pm and it was time for proceed to Pune with great memories in mind of Kalsubai climb.
#gallery-0-48 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-48 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-48 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-48 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The highest peak of Maharashtra gave us some finest experiences of life. The endurance needed to trail the ˜seemed to be never ending trail” was given to everybody of us by the sheer determination of our mind. The best example of how much you can stretch your mind in a given situation. The four ladders taught us that the life’s journey is also like them. You need to look up while climbing the ladders of life and looking down will only lead you to negative thoughts of your past life. The small summit area and the vast expanse of the nature exhibited how a minuscule our life is. And finally, each and every aspect of great nature we met while climbing up or climbing down the summit, taught us the way of living together in adverse conditions.
            Happy and Safe Trekking guys….
