Scenic Route 4/47

Jessica was both overjoyed and terrified when she recognized Rey’s voice over the phone. She was shouting with a mixture of glee and rage about something along the lines of worrying to death and never being happier to hear something in her life.
Noticing Jessica’s sheer levels of anxiety, Rey strategically omitted certain details. She confirmed that she had arrived safely and had spent an unforgettable night in a luxury hotel—all at Finn’s expense, of course. She also downplayed the fact that her phone had run out of battery.
On the other end of the table, Ben Solo was trying very hard to pretend that he wasn’t listening. Rey knew that he didn’t miss a single word she said. She didn’t like the idea of being indebted to him, so she cut the call short, simply asking Jessica to tell the others that she was doing just fine and was having a splendid holiday.
Except for Finn of course. Finn could go die for all she cared. In fact, she really hoped he would.
She handed the phone back to Ben, who was still pretending to be disinterested.
“Problems with the boyfriend?”
Rey narrowed her eyes, dismissing the question as inappropriate.
“None of your business. Thanks for the cellphone. How much do I owe you?”
“Your digits. Then we’re even.”
Was he actually flirting with her? Rey sighed disdainfully.
“After nearly killing me with your Monster Truck, you’re trying to flirt with me? You have some gall, don’t you? Have a nice day, and thank you for the call.”
Picking up her damaged suitcase again, she waved politely to the waitress, who waved back. Then she headed over to the door. At the shopping center, she withdrew 500 dollars in cash, some of which she used to buy an adapter and a shoulder bag. She judged the new bag to be more suited to her trek across the country than her current roller model (which wasn’t doing a whole lot off rolling anyway).
The encounter with Ben Solo kept gnawing at her. The man was both intoxicating and insufferable, like over-sharp cologne that gave you a headache and made it harder to think. He was a bullish, arrogant show-off—and yet something about him mesmerized her. The way he chewed his lip when he was deep in thought, the constellation of beauty marks on his face, or the involuntary grace in the way he ran his fingers through his hair. It made him seem vulnerable, utterly human. A far cry from the apathetic snark he pretended to be.
Emerging from the shopping center, she peered around the corner to make sure the pickup was no longer parked there. Reassured that it had disappeared, she walked over to the Night Owl café in relief now that Ben Solo had left the premises.
The new customers were hipster types, likely students, clad in harem pants, plaid, and oversized glasses. They typed away on their laptops, sipping from fancy drinks graced with floating scoops of ice cream.
“Hello again, can I hang around here while I recharge my phone? Should I order something else?” She asked, approaching the waitress again.
“No need, go ahead and make yourself at home. You can stay as longs as you want. I’m sorry about that annoying customer. Are you alright?”
Manners dictated that Rey should simply have responded fine, thanks, but the words that left her lips instead were “It’s absolute hell, I want to die.”
She blushed immediately, chewing on her lip. What had possessed her to open up to a stranger?
The waitress looked up at the clock mounted on the wall.
“I’ve got some time before the lunch rush, wanna talk? I can make you some fresh squeezed orange juice, it’s loaded with vitamins, it’ll help you recharge,”
“I—well…alright. That’s kind of you. By the way, I’m Rey,”
“I’m Rose, nice to meet you. I have a feeling your trip hasn’t gone to plan. Have you been here long?”
“Since yesterday,” Rey sighed, taking the glass of orange juice that Rose offered. She plopped down onto a bench and when Rose sat across from her, she told her everything: Finn, the wedding, the annulment, Poe, Jessica, the honeymoon trip, Ben Solo and his pickup.
Rose listened attentively, occasionally nodding mhm to encourage Rey to keep going. Finally she asked, “But how much money do you have for this trip?”
“Not much, really” Rey shrugged, “Finn and I took out a loan to pay for the wedding, but now I have to reimburse the suppliers, give back our apartment, and whatever else I have to budget for the next five years. I’m generally better off the less I spend. It wasn’t the idea of the century to go on a two-week holiday with barely a quid to spare.”
Rose pursed her lips, assessing that last sentence. “I know someone who could use your services, if you’re interested. The job will make you some cash and take you pretty close to San Francisco.”
Rey hesitated. Silent alarm bells went off in her head, a gut instinct to pull away. She responded without thinking, “Is it prostitution or something? Because even if I’m penniless that’s out of the question,”
“No, not at all! It’s completely harmless. It’s just that I don’t have time to do it because of the café and all. No one will force you into anything.”
“Is it drug trafficking? Cannabis? That’s legal in Colorado, isn’t it? Will I make enemies in the police department?”
“No, none of that,” Rose giggled, “It’s actually just taking a car up to California. And knowing your situation, I thought you could really use a ride. But if you don’t feel like it we can figure something else out.”
“And what does that entail exactly? What’s in this car?”
Rose jotted down a number on a Night Owl business card, handing it to Rey.
“You can contact Leia Skywalker using this number, she’s a friend. She’ll explain everything. I would do it myself but like I said, I just don’t have the time. And it would be a two-way trip for me anyway. You would only be driving one way, it’s totally convenient.”
Rey slipped the card into her pocket and drained her glass, rising to her feet.
“I’ll think about it, thanks a load,”
“You’re welcome, thank you too. I hope it all works out for you…”
Rey threw her bag over her shoulder, taking out her phone, she made her way to the exit.
“Yeah, I hope so too...”
She found herself on the road again. Inside her pocket, her fingers fiddled with the glossy edges of the business card.
The thought of that card in her pocket distracted her throughout the day.
She went to the Black American West Museum on California Street, to broaden her horizons on a culturally and historically relevant fieldtrip. She didn’t retain anything however; distracted by hard realities like not knowing where she was going to sleep that night.
She ate a cheeseburger and an Oreo milkshake at this “Jack in the Box” place, where the hundreds of options at the soft drink machine left her feeling indecisive. Looking at the advertisements, this Jack fellow was an odd mascot who only appealed to American sensibilities; his prim suit contrasted comically with his ballooning head, which looked like it was decorated by a child no older than five.
She travelled on foot to the Santa Fe Art District, where she wandered without really admiring the bright murals and art galleries. It was getting late and she was feeling tired due to the lingering jet lag. She needed a room for the night.
Worn out from her day-long walk, she slumped onto a bench. It was there that she saw the poster, in the corner of a shop window across the street.
Howl at the Moon presents: Kylo & the Knights of Ren, June 30th to July 4th: Free admission
Where had she seen that name before? Kylo and the Knights? What a bizarre name, but why was it so familiar?
It dawned on her. Kylo Ren was written on the bumper sticker of that pickup. The one belonging to what’s-his-face Ben Solo. It was a rock band.
Well, then! Instead of finding a place to sleep, she had stumbled upon the perfect place to spend the evening…
When she made it through the doors at 7 PM, the place was still quiet. It was too early for the show and the scene was deserted. Rey ordered a beer and a club sandwich at the bar. Gritting her teeth, she sat down at a small, empty table in a quiet alcove. She had a good view of the stage while taking up as little space as possible. Why had she come? Objectively, she had no desire to see Ben again, the unbearable arse. And yet—and yet she was curious. If he was any good, she could ostensibly revise her judgement.
The venue filled up slowly as the music blared. The crowd was tight-knit, greeting each other with smiles and pats on the back. The drinks kept flowing all night. At first Rey thought she would garner attention, a girl sitting all alone with her beer. But the crowd thickened, and soon she was safely just another silhouette in a sea of hundreds of others.
The sound of a few stray guitar notes made her look up. The band was onstage. There were seven of them—four women and three men. Clad in that many shades of black, they left no doubt that they were a rock band. They had it all, the leather and denim, Doc Martens, miniskirts and crop tops. Their hairstyles ranged from expertly shaved to long flowing locks and intricate braids. In center stage was Ben Solo (or was it Kylo Ren?) microphone in hand. He chewed on his lip and ran his fingers through his hair, habits that Rey had already picked up on after just two encounters. He had an unusually deep, almost guttural voice—Rey would be lying if she said that her interest wasn’t piqued. The music was a perfect sort of chaos—the melodies hypnotic under the savage rhythm and relentless beat. Rey surprised herself by singing with the crowd, repeating the refrains that she hadn’t memorized yet but which descended upon her ears and lips as though they had always been there.
Realizing that she was finally smiling, Rey thought of how the past hour had rid her of her worries for the first time in a long while. It was cathartic—she felt alive again. She had no desire to leave this place, to go back out there and find a room, as common sense would dictate. She wanted nothing more than to stay there a little while longer, a carefree spirit enjoying the music as she basked in the anonymity of the crowd.
She stayed for just about the entire evening. The band descended into the crowd after the show to drink a few beers with a small group of regulars. They laughed like old friends. Rey couldn’t help but notice their guitarist. Her style was gorgeous punk, complete with an immaculate mohawk and studs in her nose and ears that contrasted beautifully with her ebony skin. She never left Ben’s side. Shoulder to shoulder, her hand on his arm, her subtle touches and accidental brushes seemed to multiply.
Stars, I’ve never seen a girl more madly in love, too bad for her that he doesn’t look like he will ever reciprocate it.
And as though it was meant to contradict her, Ben’s hand shifted to rest on the girl’s hip, subtly pulling her against him. Rey raised the beer bottle to her lips, and found herself eye to eye with him as he looked up.
He was so shocked to see her that he began looking around, perhaps to make sure that it wasn’t one of those tacky hidden camera shows. As nothing continued to happen, he got up and walked in her direction.
The guitarist let him go, but not without seeking a reason for the sudden desertion. Her eyes locked on to Rey. Suddenly, Rey felt that she hadn’t exactly made a new friend.
“Good evening! Lovely concert there, Kylo Ren,” Rey said sweetly as Ben towered over her.
“What are you doing here?”
The question could have been unexpected if she wasn’t so naively spontaneous. Rey took a large swallow of her beer.
“I saw the light and I wandered in, what a small world, right?”
“Denver is a small town. And the nighttime rock scene even is even smaller. I didn’t realize that you liked rock music.”
“Well I don’t mean to brag but I have all sorts of hobbies apart from throwing myself at moving vehicles, really. But we never got around to that. How long have you been playing?”
“A few years.”
He wasn’t talkative and Rey pursed her lips as she scratched her brain for topics of conversation. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the rather impatient guitarist and seized upon the opportunity to ask him about her.
“Lovely guitarist you’ve got there, is she your girlfriend?”
“None of your business.”
Rey took the blow. It was fair play. She finished her beer and turned to leave.
“Well, then! Alright Ben Ren, Kylo Solo, or whatever your name is, thank you for the evening—it was a memorable performance. I had a great time but I ought to leave.”
She rose and slung her bag over her shoulder again, as it caught Ben’s eye.
“New bag? You were right to buy it, your other one was completely useless.”
“Yeah, someone was nice enough to tell me that it didn’t match my outfit. Goodnight, then.”
She had only taken a few steps toward the exit when he called out behind her:
“Where will you be staying tonight, Rey from England?”
“Nowhere. I’m a free woman in the Land of the Free.”
Her response was drowned out by the voices of late-night conversations between party diehards and smokers who congregated in packs near the door. Rey was feeling lightheaded and tipsy; she took a few wobbly steps onto the sidewalk before he called her name.
“Rey, wait!”
She turned around to see Ben cutting through the crowd in her direction, as she hit the lamppost hard. I must really be drunk then, she reasoned before giving in to the darkness.

How I Fit All My Life Possessions in Two Bags as I Travel the World.
About this post: Looking to embrace a digital nomad lifestyle? After 5 years of long term travel, I write about my digital nomad packing list, including my travel gear, gadgets, single-use plastic alternatives and things that make my digital nomad life sustainable. This digital nomad packing list will assist you in packing for long term travel, especially as a minimalist.
A few years after I had quit my full-time job in Singapore and embraced a life of travel, I posted a picture of myself zip-lining above the stunning Indian Ocean. That photo received many comments from friends, one of which startled me. It was from an ex-colleague who tagged my former boss and commented, quite innocently, “Shivya used to wear the same dress in office and look where she’s wearing it now!” At the time, I was a bit embarrassed by her observation of my sparse wardrobe. But now that I recollect that moment, I can’t help feeling pretty satisfied owning nothing more than a few clothes and essentials that snugly fit into my two bags.
Over five years ago, when I gave up having a home base to go back to, I sold or gifted away most of my belongings. Since then, I’ve attempted to fill my life with experiences and memories, rather than materialistic possessions. As I wrote in my recently released book, I couldn’t help but wonder whether we humans own things, or our things own us.
Many readers have asked me about what I carry as I travel, so on popular demand, here’s a detailed breakdown of all my current life possessions and some tips on how you can de-clutter your life too:
My travel gear
My Osprey convertible rucksack and backpack.
Convertible backpack (rucksack)
Back when I still had a corporate job and started travelling during leaves and weekends, I remember picking out a hardy-looking, affordable backpack (rucksack) in a supermarket basement. I had no idea then about the toll that backpack – and others I’ve tried over the years – would take on my back and shoulders over time, as I ran last minute to catch trains, buses and flights.
These days, I think of most backpacks as the equivalent of flying economy class. So a couple of years ago, I decided it was time to upgrade to a first-class Osprey Ozone Convertible 75L, which can be dragged around on wheels, converted within seconds into a bag with straps to carry on my shoulders (looks a bit bulky but the lumbar support is incredible), is seriously waterproof, comes with a small backpack which I use as my laptop bag and offers a lifetime warranty! Since I bought my Osprey, I’ve had to convert it and carry it on my shoulders only a handful of times – while climbing stairs, walking on mucky streets or crossing uneven mountain paths. I love it and highly recommend the investment if you’re serious about a life of long term travel.
In the past, I’ve also used a Wildcraft 60L rucksack (good lumbar support) and a High Sierra explorer rucksack, which are more affordable than the Osprey Ozone Convertible.
Laptop Bag
I’ve gone through a range of laptop bags over time, including one with a solar panel that I could use to charge my devices when I found myself off-the-grid (similar to this)! It stopped working at some point though and I couldn’t find anyone to fix it. I’ve tried out bags made by Wildcraft and Mountain Warehouse, and had to supplement them with a rain cover when I chased the monsoon.
I’m glad I finally switched to the Osprey day pack as my laptop bag, for it’s entirely waterproof, has great lumbar support (can’t emphasize how important that is when you travel for extended periods of times) and comfortably fits in all my gadgets.

What’s in my laptop bag
A glimpse of what’s in my backpack, including my new MSI PS42.
When I began down-sizing my possessions, I wasn’t really sure which things were worth hanging on to. Or which ones I’d miss.
Turns out, those arbitrary decisions on what to keep and what to leave were not life-defining. The components of my bags have evolved with time, as have I.
GADGETS
Laptop: I’ve been a long-term Macbook Pro user, but when it began dying on me, I accepted an offer to try the first professional laptop by MSI. Even though the switch to Windows is challenging, I love that my new MSI Prestige PS42 is super sleek, ultra-light (1.19 kg) and looks really cool. The battery life can survive a long bus journey and it has never hung. I’ve been using it for over a month now, and it looks like I’m going to stick with it.
Phone: The first ever smartphone I owned was an iPhone 3GS, and I’ve been a loyal Apple user since. I’m currently using the iPhone 10 XS MAX, and love its portrait mode and photography features so much that I use it as my primary camera.
Camera: I’ve been a Sony user for a long time, and currently own a Sony RX100 M2 – though I’ve only ever used it for night and astro-photography in 2018, taking all my photos with the iPhone instead.
Hard disc, pen drives: Ever since I lost a ton of data and photos to a laptop mishap in Gujarat in 2016, I’ve acquired a Seagate 2 TB hard disc to back up my data weekly. I highly recommend doing this if you work online.
Tripod: I’ve been using a small, flexible Loha tripod, but plan to upgrade to a long but light Amazon Basics tripod based on the recommendation of several friends.
Headphones: I love my Sony MDR ZX310 headphones – they are light and affordable, look cool and offer great sound quality.
Portable USB battery pack: I use a Swiss Mobility Universal Powerpack 4000mAh (similar to this), which is small and lightweight, and allows about 2 full recharges of my iPhone on the go.
OTHER ESSENTIALS
Books: 1-2 books to read, 1 diary for notes.
Water bottle: I recently acquired a Vinod steel water bottle, and love that it’s leak proof and not too bulky. Mine’s smaller, but I’d recommend a 1L.
Bamboo straw: I picked up mine with a cleaner at a resto in Thailand (for the fresh coconut water), but you can easily get it on Amazon or Ecotrunk.
Wellness: Energy bars, emergency medicines – usually paracetamol and a painkiller – and hand sanitizer. I love the alchohol-free sanitizer by Tree Wear.

Instead of putting my clothes and shoes directly in my rucksack, I segment them to stay sane by using waterproof Quechua bags for clothes (I picked them up at a Decathlon store; can’t seem to find them on Amazon), reusable hotel laundry bags for shoes, and a pouch for toiletries.
CLOTHES FOR ALL WEATHERS
In the span of a few months, I could go from the freezing German Alps to tropical Thailand – which means I need to be prepared with clothes that work for all weathers at all times. I manage this by ensuring I have many layers that can be added on or removed, and choose clothes which are light weight and easily washable. A summary of my current clothes:
Shirts: 4 T-shirts and 2 Tops: Of these, two are from No Nasties in Goa and one from TreeWear – both eco-conscious brands that use plant-based, chemical-free ingredients and dyes.
Pants: 1 Pair of jeans, 1 harem pants, 1 yoga pants and 1 semi-formal pants for when I need to look a bit more presentable.
Summer wear: 1 skirt, 1 pair of shorts and 2 summer dresses.
Wind and rain wear: 1 Light sweater and 1 waterproof rain jacket with waterproof pants.
Winter wear: 1 winter sweater, 2 heat tech thermals and 1 heat tech leggings from the Japanese brand Uniqlo, 1 muffler, 2 winter beanies.
Jacket: I own an ultra-light, foldable down jacket from Uniqlo that works till 0 degrees Celcius; although the brand states that it sources duck feathers from ethical suppliers, I won’t buy a down jacket again, simply because “ethics” are often relative and I’d rather not wear any animal products. I’m eyeing the Save the Duck jackets, which ensure warmth with recycled plastic and synthetic – my friend Kuntal even climbed the challenging snow-capped Lhotse peak outfitted in one!
Undergarments and socks: 4 bras, 1 sports bra, 8 underwear, 2 pairs of warm socks, 4 pairs of regular socks.
SHOES
Hiking shoes: 1 pair. I highly recommend opting for hiking shoes with no leather or animal by-products (seriously, who wants to wear the skin of dead horses or cows?)
Casual shoes: 1 pair; I still love Converse!
Flip-flops: 1 pair.
TOILETRIES
Shower bars: 1 bar each for soap, shampoo and conditioner, cut up to fit into a little steel box (and the remaining wrapped up dry in paper). I’m so glad I’ve been able to replace single-use plastic bottles with bars without plastic packaging – they last longer, take up less space and are eco-friendly. I always keep a lookout for handmade, vegan bars, especially at local farmer markets. I’ve been using Lush shampoo and conditioner bars – they come without plastic packaging, many of them are vegan and they’re great for the hair. And I recently stumbled upon Soulflower, an Indian brand which also makes plant-based shampoo and conditioner bars; you can contact them to find out which products will suit your hair and request for the bars to be sent without plastic packaging. Can’t wait to try them!
Face wash: I like Biotique as well as Body Shop products – and appreciate their commitment against animal testing and animal ingredients. I hope they’ll offer their products as packaging-free bars soon.
Lip balm: I love the Lush rose lollipop lip balm which comes in a reusable tin box, doesn’t contain beeswax or any animal product and lasts (almost) forever!
Hygiene: Bamboo toothbrush, toothpaste, hair serum, nail cutter.
Menstrual stuff: Cloth pads – I like mine from AseSnappy in the US, and have heard great things about EcoFemme in India. Menstrual cup – I’ve finally had a breakthrough, phew! I got myself a Lena Cup in the US, and among Indian brands, I’ve heard good things about the Boondh and Rustic Art cups.
I don’t use makeup for I prefer it au natural
OTHER ESSENTIALS
Portable blender: Ever since I turned vegan and fell in love with healthy and tasty smoothies on the go, I acquired a portable blender by Vitamer. It’s small, very light and ensures I can have fresh fruit smoothies wherever in the world I am, often sparking much envy from hosts and fellow travellers.
LifeStraw water filter: I decided to get a LifeStraw filter over a LifeStraw bottle fitted with a filter because I don’t like the drinking (sucking) mechanism on their bottles – and only need to use the filter while hiking or during the rare times when I’m not able to find filtered drinking water.
Snack pack: I’m always prepared with energy bars, nuts, seeds, long-lasting vegan goodies and flavored tea bags gathered from around the world.
Takeaway box: I bought a collapsible silicone box but it broke quickly. I’m currently using a small steel box to pack leftovers and for takeaways – and saying no to a ton of single-use plastic as a result.
Foldable bags: A handy Mountain Warehouse bag for being outdoors, a foldable 30L Quecha bag when I need to carry extra stuff than fits in my bags (like ferrying a whole lot of vegan goodies, gifts, etc) and a foldable cloth bag for any grocery shopping needs.
Medical kit: I always have a small set of medicines – Crocin (for fever), Ibugesic Plus (for pain, menstrual cramps), Allegra (for allergies), Burnova Aloe Vera Gel (for sunburns to which I’m so prone), Volini (for muscle pain), Bandaids and Soframycin (for cuts, wounds), Vitamin B-12 and Vitamin D3 supplements.
THE EXTRA STUFF
There are some things I need occasionally, that are expensive but just too bulky to fit into my bags long-term. For example, snow boots, a snow jacket and an old faux leather jacket I love but only works for spring / fall weather. I end up leaving these things in the homes of kind hosts, friends and family, hoping to retrieve them as and when needed.

Reducing single-use plastic in my bags
My attempts at reducing my single-use plastic consumption.
The truth about plastic that’s only good for limited use – like shopping bags, bottles for shampoo and other toiletries, toothbrushes, toothpaste, straws, bottled mineral water etc – is that it harms our environment. Much of it lands up in the ocean, where it enters the body of marine animals or chokes them to death. Some of it goes into landfills and pollutes the soil and groundwater. Some is burnt, releasing harmful toxins, and even the tiny amount that is recycled can only be down-cycled.
So, saying no and reducing our consumption is the only way forward. In my bags, I’ve replaced the following single-use plastic:
Plastic toothbrush – with a bamboo toothbrush.
Plastic shopping bags – with a foldable cloth bag.
Plastic containers for food – with a steel takeaway box.
Plastic bottled water – with a refillable steel water bottle and Lifestraw filter.
Plastic bottles of shower gel, shampoo and conditioner – with bars for each.
Plastic straws – with a reusable bamboo straw and cleaner.
Non-biodegradable pads – with cloth pads and a menstrual cup.
You can easily find these replacements on Amazon or EcoTrunk (an online store dedicated to sustainable products).
Things I want to replace but haven’t found plastic-free alternatives for yet:
Facewash
Hair serum
Toothpaste
I also have a couple of ziplock bags in my bag which I’m reusing till they’re worn out.

Joys and challenges of living out of 2 bags
Carrying my life possessions as I say goodbye to the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia.
JOYS:
It’s easy to pack and unpack.
I never have a hard time deciding what to wear.
An uncluttered life means using very little mental space worrying about my things.
I have little to no shopping expenses; all that money saved goes towards travelling.
This lifestyle is a conversation starter for a minimalist life, wherever in the world I am. We have to fight consumerism, one conversation at a time.
By owning few things and sourcing plastic-free alternatives, I’m trying to reduce my carbon and environmental footprint.
CHALLENGES:
Laundry – I have to do it atleast once a week.
The temptation to buy new things I don’t need; I find the best way is to stay away from malls and fancy stores!
Sometimes I feel judged for wearing the same stuff all the time, but I’ve grown to not care.
Physical gifts I receive, for there is no space to fit them in and carry them along. So I end up re-gifting them.

Can you downsize your possessions too?
The digital nomad life – my sleek MSI laptop, Sony headphones and a creative cafe space.
Absolutely. Whether you travel long term or not, you can make a conscious choice to cut down how much you own. I mean, do you really need 10 pairs of shoes?
Where to begin
Consciously look at everything you own. Things that you haven’t used in the past 3-6 months are probably just extras that you can comfortably live without. Clear out your cupboards and give away things in good condition to people who could use them. Re-purpose what you can, especially plastic stuff you already own. If you’re the organized type, make a list of your belongings. Even writing this post made me feel like I still have way more than I need.
The next time you’re about to buy something, ask yourself, do you really, really need it?
Figure out what works for you
As with anything else in life, competition is futile. Some people can get by on much less, some need to own way more. Experiment and figure out what works for you, what makes you feel mentally at ease.
Choose experiences over possessions
When our possessions occupy less of our mind and wallet space, we can focus on spending our mental energy and money on experiences that have the potential to shape our perspective and sometimes even change our entire life.
I’d like to believe I’m making that choice everyday. You?
Do you think you own more things that you need?

✰ Haruki’s Good Day
Haruki opened his eyes blearily, immediately pulling his covers up over his head when his vision met the bright sun. “Noooooo,” he moaned, closing his eyes again in hopes that he could maybe sneak a few more minutes… or hours. To his dismay, his alarm started to blare at his bedside– from the sound of the ringtone, it was his third one, of more moderate importance. He certainly should get up, but his lazy bones did everything in their power to keep him in bed, at least until his fourth alarm sounded.
“God… okay, fine–” he huffed, tossing his duvet aside and grabbing his phone. He pulled his stuffed panda and tucked it comfortably in the crook of his elbow, mostly to serve as something to shove his face onto while he checked his notifications. He really had no right to complain about getting up as it was already well past 11, but if it was a day off he'd be sound asleep til at least 1 and every minute earlier than that was just cruel. Unfortunately, a busy guy like him had a packed schedule, even if he only had half of his life to attend to today. He had to get to Tokyo by 12:30 for an ZYX Tour rehearsal, and he always preferred to be on time rather than deal with the others' crowing when someone was late. Cognizant of the time, he checked the most important notifications (confirmation to Lux he was coming, a reply to a merch supplier, a good morning text to Kami) and left the others for later. With a heavy heart and a yearning look at his bed, he quickly tucked the panda under the covers and headed to his closet.
"Are we practicing the dance routines today…?" he mumbled to himself, pulling out a grey pair of harem pants and a flowy cropped shirt with a hem that barely skimmed the waistband. He picked out a flannel to tie around his waist, a sleeveless hoodie and several wristbands– he may just look like a hot mess, but whenever he made these sorts of decisions he's always lauded as a fashion icon. He quickly changed, catching a look at himself in the mirror. Not having much time left, he threw his hair into a messy side braid. It really was getting long. He pulled on a pair of shoes, grabbed his bag and phased about a block away from the rehearsal space.
Once the coast was clear, he changed frequencies to the RG and merged into foot traffic seamlessly. He was in the middle of thinking about how good he’s gotten at this when he bumped right into another pedestrian.
“Oop–”
“Haru!”
Haruki stopped in the middle of the sidewalk, staring dumbly at Lux, who grinned like he knew a bit too much.
“Oh, sorry. I didn’t see you.” Haruki awkwardly gestured for the two of them to keep walking, which Lux thankfully went with.
“I guess you didn’t, huh? Geez, Haru, it’s like you appeared out of nowhere or something…” Lux sighed wistfully, scratching his cheek. Haruki’s cheeks turned the slightest shade of pink at the nickname– when he will get over it, he does not know– and he glanced away to keep from bumping into anyone else.
“Magic.” Haruki offered in response.
“Must be. Like you say, you’re immortal, right?” Lux snickered, and Haruki’s slight discomfort around Lux raised by a notch or two. Whether they know the UG or not, those that teased that knowledge always gave Haruki ulcers.
But hey, at least he cares enough about that now.
“You know me,” Haruki said in a flat tone as teasingly one can get. He opened the door, leading the way to their regular practice room in the studio. He was greeted cheerfully by the rest of the call group for the day– Mabumabu, Yaburu, Tenhi, Gintoki, and a few others– and the pair being the last to arrive, the group began their rehearsal promptly.
The first half of rehearsal went smoothly. The choreographer helped them rehearse their dance numbers for their solo songs as well as some of the groups. Urata noticed something glinting in the light on Haruki’s abdomen and, astonished, pointed out that he had a belly button piercing. That led to Sakata tugging Haruki’s waistband down without thinking to confirm the existence of the hip piercings he thought he saw when he twirled earlier. It was certainly a lot of (probably straight) men staring at his stomach and hips, commenting on how brave he was and how they wished they could “be that casually erotic”. Oh, if only he told them about his other piercings.
“Haru-chan, are you able to make it to film a video next week?” Mabumabu asked during their break.
“Ah… I don’t think I can.” Haruki knew that the next week was a Game, and he was lucky to even be able to show up to rehearsal that day.
“Not at all next week? I was hoping to get other Utaite into this video, we were going to play a team based board game–” Mabumabu picked up his phone and opened the calendar app. “It’s okay if you can’t, though.”
“N-not at all next week, no. I have something for work.” Should he change the subject? He felt a wave of unease wash over him.
“Huh, you’re never free the first week of the month. Do they work you that hard?” Yaburu asked. Haruki felt a little self conscious at that, he knew that he was one of the few Utaite in this friend group that still had a “job” outside being a singer– unlike his friends, he wasn’t able to be a proud hikikomori and stay at home with his non existent cats.
“It’s okay. We can reschedule it to the week after, right? Whatever Haru-chan has, it must be important.” Lux gave a smile towards Haruki, one that unsettled him more than reassured him.
The rest of the rehearsal went without an issue, other than the group of friends whooping when Lux was a bit too handsy with Haruki during their duet practice. Once they wrapped up, a few of them headed off in their separate ways leaving the rest of them to search for dinner.
“Haru-chan, you should invite your boyfriend too! If he’s free.” Gintoki suggested, grinning. Haruki instantly went pink, glancing to the others for their input before he actually asked Kami. The rest of the group echoed Gintoki’s suggestion– they were strangely fond of Kami, though Haruki always wondered if they were all just intrigued because all of them were single, for the most part. In the end, he called Kami and invited them along, and after waiting a plausible time period, they showed up at the restaurant to join them.
“I can’t believe they keep inviting me,” Kami whispered to Haruki as they were seated.
“They like you, I guess,” he mumbled back. The group immediately launched into a very heated debate about which Vocaloid could be considered the most useful in production (“IA is the only girl in this world, end of discussion”) which only certain members could really participate in. Haruki stubbornly took a sip of his tea, blocking out the insults his friends were feeding him about his queen. He glanced down at the leftover gyudon in his bowl, his stomach protesting at him for consuming so much meat in one sitting when he had been used to a steady diet of cake, eggs and bubble waffles for the past month.
“Full?” Lux asked, tilting his head knowingly.
“Nah,” Haruki replied, not giving him the satisfaction, “Saving it for later.” He had to be better at predicting when his friends would want to eat out so he could eat like a normal person and not the cake infused immortal static mass that he really was. He pushed it in front of him and set his chopsticks on top as if proving a point. Fortunately, he was closest to the waiter bringing them the bill and was able to snatch it out of anyone else’s grasp and pay it before anyone could react.
“Impressive, Haru!” Kami laughed, having been a witness to the friend group’s vicious fighting over the bill before. The friends / co-workers shared goodbye hugs and parted ways, leaving Haruki and Kami alone. Though they were all well aware of them dating, Haruki waited until everyone had filed out before sneaking his hand into theirs.
“What now?” he asked, checking the time. It was surprisingly early, around 8:30 pm and Haruki had barely been awake half a day.
Kami glanced around at the streets, which Haruki knew was to look for something sweet. His chest thrummed slightly at how thoughtful his boyfriend was, always eager to fuel his near addiction to sweets. “Oooh, there’s a new crepe place I’ve been meaning to try, they also have sweet taiyaki too–!” they said, pointing down the block. “Wanna go?”
“Sure,” Haruki replied, tucking his take out container with his leftover gyudon into his static pocket. He readjusted his grip on their hand and he let them lead the way.
“How was practice?” Kami asked, glancing up.
Haruki hummed. “Productive.”
“Thats good,” Kami chuckled, squeezing his hand. “You’ve got a Game coming up, right?”
“Unfortunately,” he sighed. “Gotta wait another few months before we can change things to every other month instead of monthly.”
“I can stay over again if you want,” they offered, “My schedule’s pretty free next week.” Kami reached forward and opened the door, letting Haruki go in first.
“Mm, if you want to–” Haruki said, a slight smile on his face. Upon a quick glance at the menu, he decided on ordering a custard and a green tea cream taiyaki, while Kami ordered an Oreo flavoured one. The two received their orders and sat down at a table, eating their taiyaki and chatting idly about their days. Haruki promptly burned his mouth on the hot custard and proved that he never learns by burning his mouth again. He shrugged his blunder off amidst Kami’s laughter.
The two eventually parted ways with a small goodbye kiss, as Kami had a meeting in a few hours back in Canada time. Haruki ordered another custard taiyaki to go and wrapped it up in napkins. Once the coast was clear, he phased back home and comfortably in his own apartment.
“Harucchi!” a cheerful voice chirped. Small thuds rapidly approached him as a tiny body hugged him from behind.
“Hey, Yoshiko– I got you something in Shibuya,” he said, rustling her hair. Yoshiko’s eyes sparkled as she squished her cheeks in awe. He presented her the taiyaki, earning him a pleased squeal. She rapidly updated him on what had happened over the day in between nibbles of taiyaki.
“Are you ready for the Game, Harucchi?” she asked with wide eyes, sitting with her knees tucked to her chest.
“Is anyone ever ready?” he replied, letting out his hair from its braid and shaking it out. Yoshiko giggled and finished off her bedtime snack, getting back to her feet.
“I’ll see you next week!” she cheered, giving him a kiss on the cheek and phasing away in a burst of sparkles. Haruki gave a faint smile after she left.
“Ah, I should shower before I go to bed…” he mumbled, checking the time again. It was just 10:30 pm but he was already longing for his pillows. He headed to the bathroom, stripping down of his clothes and letting them fall where they did, heading in for a quick shower. Quick– meaning a solid 45 minutes of just his hair routine, leading into another 30 minutes of blow drying and further product outside the shower. His quick shower also included a 15 step skin care regime, meaning that he wasn’t out of the bathroom until just after midnight.
“What do I even have to do tomorrow…?” he asked himself, checking his phone for the next day’s schedule. He had a recording session with Lux in the afternoon, but other than that his day seemed pretty free. With his hair in a loose braid to keep his waves intact, he climbed onto his bed and scooped up his stuffed panda in his arms, shuffling under the covers.
Goodnight! he texted Kami before placing his phone on his bedside table, ensuring that it was plugged before he turned over and quickly fell asleep.
