Why Teak Garden Furniture is Perfect for UK Gardens: Durability and Style
As the trend of outdoor living continues to grow, homeowners across the UK are increasingly investing in their gardens as extensions of their living spaces. Among the various options available for garden furniture, teak garden furniture has emerged as a standout choice, renowned for its exceptional durability and timeless style. This article explores the many reasons why teak furniture is particularly well-suited for UK gardens, focusing on its resilience to weather conditions, aesthetic appeal, and overall functionality.
Tumblr media
The Allure of Teak Wood
Teak (Tectona grandis) is a tropical hardwood that has long been regarded as one of the finest materials for outdoor furniture. Its unique properties make it an ideal choice for the unpredictable climate of the UK.
1. Exceptional Durability
Teak wood is known for its incredible strength and resilience. It contains natural oils that provide inherent resistance to moisture, decay, and pests. This characteristic is particularly advantageous in the UK, where rainfall is frequent and humidity levels can fluctuate. Unlike other woods that may warp, crack, or splinter when exposed to the elements, teak maintains its structural integrity over time. Homeowners can enjoy their teak garden furniture for many years, making it a worthwhile investment for outdoor settings.
2. Weather Resistance
The UK experiences a variety of weather conditions, from sunny days to wet and windy spells. Teak is uniquely suited to withstand these challenges. Its dense composition helps prevent water absorption, reducing the risk of damage from rain or snow. Additionally, teak furniture does not require extensive treatments or coverings, allowing homeowners the freedom to enjoy their outdoor spaces without constant worry about the effects of the weather.
3. Low Maintenance Requirements
One of the standout features of teak garden furniture is its low maintenance needs. Unlike other materials that may require regular staining or sealing, teak only needs occasional cleaning to keep it looking its best. A simple wash with mild soap and water is often sufficient to remove dirt and grime. Over time, teak will naturally develop a beautiful silver-grey patina, which many find appealing. For those who prefer to retain the original golden hue, applying teak oil periodically can enhance its beauty without compromising its durability.
Timeless Aesthetic Appeal
Beyond its practical benefits, teak garden furniture boasts a timeless aesthetic that complements a variety of outdoor styles.
1. Versatile Design Options
Teak furniture comes in a wide range of designs, from traditional to contemporary, making it easy for homeowners to find pieces that fit their personal style and garden theme. Whether it’s a classic teak dining set, elegant loungers, or stylish benches, teak furniture can seamlessly integrate into any outdoor space, enhancing its overall appeal.
2. Natural Beauty
The rich, warm tones of teak wood and its unique grain patterns create an inviting atmosphere in any garden. The natural beauty of teak adds a touch of sophistication and elegance, making it a preferred choice for those looking to elevate their outdoor decor. Its ability to blend with the surrounding landscape further enhances its appeal, allowing it to coexist harmoniously with plants, flowers, and other natural elements.
3. Enhancing Outdoor Living
As outdoor living spaces become more popular, teak furniture provides the perfect setting for entertaining guests or enjoying family gatherings. A beautifully arranged teak dining set encourages al fresco dining, while comfortable loungers invite relaxation. Teak benches can serve as focal points in gardens, offering a place to pause and appreciate the beauty of nature. With teak furniture, homeowners can create an inviting outdoor space that fosters connection and enjoyment.
Sustainability and Ethical Sourcing
In an age where sustainability is increasingly important, teak wood stands out as an eco-friendly choice for outdoor furniture.
1. Responsible Sourcing
Many reputable manufacturers prioritize sustainable practices when sourcing teak wood. They ensure that the teak is harvested from responsibly managed forests, promoting environmental conservation. By choosing teak garden furniture from a reputable supplier, homeowners can feel confident that their purchase supports ethical sourcing and sustainable forestry practices.
2. Longevity and Reduced Waste
Investing in high-quality teak furniture means that homeowners are less likely to need replacements in the near future. The longevity of teak reduces waste and minimizes the environmental impact associated with producing and disposing of outdoor furniture. This commitment to sustainability aligns with the values of many modern consumers who seek to make environmentally responsible choices.
Caring for Teak Garden Furniture
While teak is low maintenance, following a few simple care tips can help prolong its lifespan and maintain its beauty.
1. Regular Cleaning
To keep teak furniture looking its best, it is essential to clean it regularly. Using a soft cloth or sponge with mild soap and water will help remove dirt and debris. Rinse thoroughly with water and dry to prevent water spots.
2. Oiling (If Desired)
If homeowners wish to maintain the original golden hue of teak, applying teak oil periodically can help. This treatment enhances the wood's color and protects it from drying out. However, many appreciate the natural aging process, which results in the characteristic silver-grey patina.
3. Protecting from the Elements
While teak is weather-resistant, using protective covers during extreme weather conditions can help prolong its life. Covers protect the wood from heavy rain, snow, and intense sunlight, ensuring that the furniture remains in excellent condition.
4. Inspecting for Damage
Regularly inspect teak furniture for any signs of wear or damage, such as cracks or loose joints. Addressing minor issues promptly can prevent further deterioration and ensure that the furniture remains safe and functional.
Conclusion
Teak garden furniture is an exceptional choice for UK gardens, offering a perfect combination of durability and style. Its remarkable resistance to the elements, low maintenance needs, and timeless aesthetic appeal make it an ideal investment for outdoor spaces. Additionally, its sustainability and ethical sourcing make it a responsible choice for environmentally conscious consumers.

To reduce the visual impact on the site, the stadium height was minimised by combining a flat roof and a compact arrangement of seats.

They also offer functional benefits, keeping out the sunlight and rain while encouraging air to circulate and prevailing wind to enter. This helps to cool the building in hot weather in tandem with airflow-creating fans and a mist-cooling system.
Wood also features inside the Japan National Stadium, where it lines the interior spaces to help create a warm and tactile environment. It has also been used to furnish the athletes' dressing rooms and to create benches in recreation spaces.
The stadium is complete with more than 450 places for wheelchair users, solar panels on the roof that generate electricity and rainwater collection points in underground cisterns that are used to irrigate the arena's greenery.

When Japan National Stadium was first revealed in 2015 it became mired in controversy as it replaced a proposal by UK architect Zaha Hadid that was scrapped over rising costs and opposition.
It came under fire again in 2017 as tropical hardwood linked to deforestation and human rights violations was used as a mould for its concrete elements. This is one of the reasons the Tokyo 2020 Olympics has been accused of greenwashing by promising to be the greenest Olympic event ever.

I hired a wheelchair
Or, Wheeeeeeeeee! (-lchair)
~
Some of this will be quite UK-specific, but lots of it is universal.
Here’s some things I learned, in no particular order!
Get cycling gloves first. I knew I’d need them but I didn’t have a chance to get them in advance and like, just do it. I ended up with a sort of hole/blister on the squishy bit at the base of my right thumb after a day of fairly minimal self-wheeling and being pushed around, and putting on cycling gloves was an immediate relief. Get gloves first and then you don’t have to be pushed around because you have blisters on your hands! Get ones that have fingers so your hands stay pretty clean and stuff. When you’re pushing yourself along by something that goes through puddles and over all kinds of floor-mank, your hands get grubby.
You’re gonna go through cycling gloves pretty fast! They were pretty worn down even after two days. I guess they’re kind of like socks on hardwood floors, or ballet slippers.
After a while you get good at putting the brakes on and off automatically and without having to look, so that’s cool.
All pavements slope towards the road for drainage, in a way that is not obvious at all when you’re walking, but when you’re noob-wheelchairing and one arm is knackered and doing all the work to stop you heading into the road it is really obvious.
Councils think they have made pavement kerbs wheelchair accessible but, I mean, they are not always that great, let’s be honest.
You won’t have enough arm strength and stamina to do what you want to do and go where you want to go without assistance for a while probably? I would push myself a bit, and then when I got tired I would ask Jay to push me a bit, and we’d alternate like that. I was usually slower than Jay, but I did get a bit faster, especially after we took the arm rests off.
At least when you’ve only been doing it a few days, it takes twice as long to get anywhere than you think it will, or more.
Take the arm rests off. They get in the way, you have to hold your arms at a funny angle that stops you getting your strength behind the push, you can't get the best grip on the wheel thingy, and you get tired faster. (Kate found a button that let us pull the armrests off the one I hired and it was great.) If possible, ask the hire people to remove the arm rests for you so you don’t have to worry about them.
Someone needs to invent a periscope so that the person pushing the wheelchair and the person in the wheelchair can see each other. Otherwise you both just feel really weird and impersonal and a bit isolated.
Similarly, when you’re being pushed and then there’s a pause, if there are people with you and they don’t come around to the front of the wheelchair and they just stay behind you that is really weird! So I had to get good at saying stuff like “can you come around this side of the wheelchair?” (if I had not got cycling gloves yet) or just turning around myself. It took a while for my “just turn the wheelchair around” instinct to kick in, I did a lot of twisting and craning for no good reason! :P After a while of being pushed I think inertia happened and I forgot I could move myself. (Another reason I preferred pushing myself, I think.)
Being able to put your stuff on the back of the wheelchair is great, but it does make pushing harder, especially on upward slopes. If you go up quite a steep slope without someone pushing you it feels like you’re going to tip over backwards. (Thankfully this did not happen to me!)
Going downhill is fun.
I was alarmed by everything being so high up in supermarkets, so I just got out and pushed the empty wheelchair around in front of me and put all my shopping in it. It’s kinda nice because it gives you something to lean on a bit while you’re walking.
The world is my bench.
I still wanted to get up and stretch and whatnot every now and again, and that was pretty cool because I was often with someone who appreciated a bit of a sit down in a convenient wheelchair, and maybe a bit of a push around too. So I stretched and pushed someone in a wheelchair for a bit and then sat down again, and they got to have a rest, and it was good.
Another nice thing about needing to stretch is that “do you want to have a go in the wheelchair?” is a great ice-breaker.
If you can get out of your wheelchair and lift it up small steps, you probably don’t need help from train assistance people with that portable ramp kerfuffle.
It was so nice to be like “wow being still is boring, let’s wander around and look at things while I wait” and not be like “that’s going to hurt and make my recovery take longer and severely reduce what I can do today etc.” I wasn’t invisibly trapped in space any more, I could just... go 10 feet over there and look at the newspapers, for no reason, just because! And nothing bad would happen! Incredible. It’s hard to really understand how disabled you are until you have something that takes away your problem. (Sometimes it gives you new problems but like, at least you’ve got the choice, right?) I had no idea that other people can just walk around, for no reason, just because it’s more interesting than not moving around, and there are no bad side effects - and in fact it usually feels nice and good and enhances your life to do so.
It’s also cool because I would like to be able to go to active things (gym? dancing?) and then be able to wheel myself home. At the moment if I do anything active outside of my house I am essentially trapped. One time I got a gym subscription from my GP and by the time I got to the gym I was feeling so bad that I had to go right back home or I would’ve been trapped. If I have a wheelchair then I can do LOTS on my legs and then let my arms take me home while the chair supports my weight! Which could mean that it’s possible for my legs to get stronger with a wheelchair than without, paradoxically.
It’s now two days since I gave back the wheelchair, and I am feeling it in my chest and the front of my shoulders and my upper back and upper arms. Not in a bad way, I can still do stuff, but it’s just the feeling of my muscles breaking down and rebuilding. I feel very lucky that I had someone to push me when my arms got tired, because without that my arms and chest and back would be on fire right now. It’s also amazing to feel like I’ve exerted myself and used my muscles, without the feeling that I’ve totally broken myself??? I can’t even remember a time when I’ve felt like that, because the gap between resting and “oops I’ve overdone it” is so so tiny for me usually! The fact that I have used all those muscles so much over several days and I’m not totally broken is just, wow.
~
The cost
It cost me £40 to hire a wheelchair for 4-5 days, and that was because the minimum charge was like 2 weeks or something? I paid less because I picked it up from the hire company office instead of having it delivered, which is apparently the standard. It was VERY lucky that the place I was staying was reasonably close to the hire company office, though.
I took the velcro foot straps off the wheelchair and then lost them and had to pay £10 extra, so like, look after the bits you take off!
~
Things I am looking forward to from an actually good for me wheelchair
Rigid frame. The folding wheelchair frame jiggles about all over the place, and it feels like half my effort at any given moment is rattling out through the joints (of my wheelchair and my body!).
Smaller front wheels? The little ones that help you turn were still just too big. They kept crashing into my feet on the footrest if I went backwards a bit and whatnot.
CUSTOMISING. That’s self-explanatory. I’m thinking embroidered things on the back, and maybe lights on my wheels? >:D Also if there is a good way to carry things easily (pockets? panniers?) then I want it.
Lighter. At least, that’s what I’ve heard? It sounds nice, sometimes I felt like an absolute unit with the backpack on and everything, so every kg helps.
Being a bit higher up maybe or something? I felt quite recumbent in this wheelchair, but when I think of other wheelchairs I’ve seen people using it’s like, your centre of gravity is a bit further up/forward, and that looks more comfortable and like you can use your body strength a bit better.
Overall I just got a feel for how these kinds of standard one-size-fits-all wheelchairs are designed for being pushed around, rather than comfortably wheeling yourself around on the regular. I wanna get a nice cushion and then maybe start going for wheels along cycle paths in the countryside. :)
~
The Jassian??? (Is that what we called it?)
This is a move that me and Jay have patented.
You’re crossing a road and you’re coming up to a dropped kerb on the other side of the road that isn’t all that dropped, and the usual solution is to get out of the wheelchair and then the pusher gets it up onto the pavement and then you sit back down again.
But that’s slowwww and you have to stand uppppp and it just sort of breaks up an otherwise smooth thing, right?
So if the person in the chair puts their feet on the ground behind the footrests and pushes down, the front of the chair lifts up just enough that you can get the front wheels onto the pavement. And then you quickly pick your feet up and put them on the footrests again, so you don’t stub your toes on the kerb, and you’re sorted!
It’s like, hup!
Edit: I’ve since found out from people with training and/or experience that the good way is to turn around and go up the bump backwards, because the big wheels can handle it better, but the Jassian technique is better because you don’t have to go backwards, in my opinion.

Durable and Stylish Teak Garden Benches for Your UK Home
As the UK's climate becomes increasingly unpredictable, with fluctuating temperatures and more frequent bouts of inclement weather, the need for outdoor furniture that can withstand the elements has never been more crucial. Enter teak garden benches – a timeless and resilient seating solution that can transform your outdoor living space into a true haven of comfort and style. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore the unparalleled benefits of teak as a material for garden benches, delve into the diverse range of designs and styles available, and provide you with expert insights to help you select the perfect teak garden bench in uk.
Tumblr media
The Enduring Appeal of Teak Outdoor Furniture
Teak's reputation as a premier material for outdoor furniture is well-deserved. Originating from the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, this dense and oily hardwood has long been prized for its exceptional durability and resistance to the elements.Unlike many other wood species, teak is naturally equipped to withstand the harsh conditions often encountered in the UK's unpredictable climate. Its high oil content acts as a natural barrier against moisture, mold, and mildew, while the wood's tight grain structure makes it incredibly resistant to warping, cracking, and splitting – even after years of exposure to the sun, rain, and wind. But teak's appeal extends far beyond its practical benefits. The wood's inherent beauty and warm, golden hue lend a timeless elegance to any outdoor setting, seamlessly blending traditional and contemporary design aesthetics.
Exploring the Versatility of Teak Garden Benches
When it comes to enhancing your UK garden or patio with teak seating, the options are as diverse as they are captivating. Let's delve into some of the most popular and versatile teak garden bench designs:
Classic Teak Benches
The classic teak garden bench, with its slatted seat and backrest, is a perennial favorite. These traditional designs often feature simple, clean lines that complement a wide range of garden styles, from formal and manicured to more casual and naturalistic.
Teak Backless Benches
For a more modern and minimalist aesthetic, teak backless benches offer a streamlined seating solution. These benches can be placed along garden paths, tucked into cozy corners, or used as part of a cohesive outdoor dining setup, creating a striking visual statement.
Teak Benches with Backs
For added comfort and support, teak benches with high, contoured backs can be an excellent choice. These designs often feature gently curved or slatted backrests, providing a more relaxed and inviting seating experience, particularly well-suited for extended periods of outdoor enjoyment.
Teak Storage Benches
If you're looking to maximize the functionality of your outdoor space, teak storage benches can be a brilliant solution. These benches feature a hidden compartment underneath the seat, providing valuable storage space for gardening tools, outdoor cushions, or other accessories.
Teak Bench Sets
Many premium teak furniture collections offer matching bench sets, allowing you to create a cohesive and visually appealing look in your garden or patio. These sets often include a range of bench sizes, providing flexibility in accommodating different seating needs.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Teak Garden Benches
When selecting the perfect teak benches for your UK garden or patio, there are several important factors to keep in mind:
Size and Scale
Carefully measure your available space and choose benches that will fit comfortably without overwhelming the area. Consider the number of people you typically want to accommodate and select a bench size that can meet your needs.
Design and Aesthetic
Think about the overall style and theme of your outdoor living area. A traditional, slatted teak bench may work well in a more formal, classic garden, while a more contemporary, minimalist teak backless bench could complement a modern, sleek design.
Weather Resistance
As mentioned earlier, teak's natural resistance to the elements makes it an excellent choice for UK outdoor furniture. However, some teak benches may be better suited for the unpredictable British weather than others. Look for benches that feature high-quality sealants or finishes to provide additional protection.
Comfort and Ergonomics
While the visual appeal of teak benches is important, it's also crucial to consider the comfort and ergonomics of the seating. Test out the benches to ensure they provide the level of comfort you and your guests require for extended outdoor experiences.
Maintenance and Care
Teak is relatively low-maintenance, but it does require some basic care to keep it looking its best. Consider the time and effort you're willing to invest in maintaining your teak benches, and choose a model that fits your lifestyle.
Budget
Teak outdoor furniture can vary significantly in price, depending on the quality of the wood, the craftsmanship, and the size of the set. Establish a budget that works for your needs and preferences, and shop around to find the best value.
Caring for Your Teak Garden Benches
One of the great advantages of investing in premium teak benches for your UK garden or patio is their exceptional durability and low-maintenance requirements. However, to ensure your benches continue to look their best for years to come, it's important to follow a few simple care and maintenance steps:
Cleaning
Regular cleaning with a mild soap and water solution can help remove any dirt, debris, or stains that may accumulate on the surface of the benches. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the natural beauty of the teak.
Oiling
Periodically applying a teak oil or sealer can help maintain the wood's natural luster and weather-resistance. This should be done every six months to a year, depending on the benches' exposure to the elements.
Storage
When not in use, it's best to store your teak benches in a covered or shaded area to protect them from the sun's UV rays and prevent fading. If the benches must remain outdoors year-round, consider using a water-resistant cover or tarp to keep them protected.
Weathering
Many UK homeowners choose to embrace the natural weathering process of teak, allowing the benches to develop a beautiful silver-gray patina over time. This process is entirely natural and does not compromise the structural integrity of the wood.
By following these simple care and maintenance tips, you can ensure that your premium teak garden benches continue to look their best and provide years of enjoyment in your outdoor setting.
Conclusion
Investing in durable and stylish teak garden benches is a wise choice for any UK home, as these pieces not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of your outdoor living space but also provide a resilient and long-lasting seating solution.Teak's exceptional resistance to the elements, coupled with its timeless elegance and natural beauty, make it the ideal material for creating a comfortable and inviting garden or patio. Whether you choose a classic teak bench, a modern backless design, or a versatile teak storage bench, these pieces can transform your outdoor setting into a true oasis of relaxation and enjoyment.By carefully considering the factors that matter most to you, such as size, design, comfort, and maintenance, you can find the perfect teak garden benches to suit your UK home and create a space that seamlessly blends form and function. With proper care and attention, your teak benches will continue to be a cherished and durable addition to your outdoor living experience for years to come.

How to create a low maintenance garden
A low maintenance garden is ideal if you don’t really like gardening, or if you truly never have the time to garden. Less is more when it comes to low maintenance gardens, and it’s a style that works with all sizes, especially small gardens because you’re already working with a compact space.
Want to know how to make your outside space work for you and not the other way around? Here are some simple steps to a sure-fire, easy garden.
You're reading: How to create a low maintenance garden
Golden rules
1. To get a truly low maintenance garden, there’s one simple, but radical thing to do – limit the number of different plants you have. The fewer you have the lower the maintenance will be. Try to stick to between 5 and 10 varieties – think swathes of rudbeckias or sedums or lines of bamboo or tall grasses. You’ll get to know what care and attention they need very well, and you’ll be able to spot weeds more easily and be better able to deal with them quickly.
2. Lawns need regular work and weekly cutting, so pave it, gravel it, deck it – any of these will be less work than grass. Paving takes just a sweep a week to look after, no slogging up and down with a mower. However, if you want to keep the lawn, make it a really simple shape. A rectangular lawn can be cut in minutes whilst an irregular shaped lawn can take 10 times longer.
3. The more hard landscaping you have in your garden, the lower the workload will be. When designing a low maintenance garden, aim to reduce the size of the planted areas in your outdoor space. For instance, take the beds back towards the boundaries and replace them with paving if possible – a path around the garden works well.
Tumblr media
There’s also a rule of thumb – the ‘harder’ the hard landscaping the easier it will be to look after. So slate and slabs are less work than decking and gravel. The decking will need regular cleaning and the gravel will need to be kept in place and raked, whereas slabs can be left.
4. For beds, try top-dressing them. A good thick layer of gravel, slate or chippings will help to suppress weeds and make everything look smarter.
5. Whether you’re putting in fences or buying garden furniture, have a look at hardwood rather than softwood. Softwood will need more maintenance.
6. Always have plenty of accessible storage in the garden. The easier it is to put things away and access them, the lower the workload will be. Investing in a small, narrow garden shed is a good idea if you have the space.

7. Garden maintenance really comes down to outdoor housework, so try to make those jobs as easy as possible. Keep the brush and pan outside, with a handy place to put anything that needs to be discarded. Again, these essentials can be stored in a shed.
8. Make sure you have a lovely place to sit. If gardening is not your thing at least make sure you can enjoy your space by lounging in it. And that’s the main aim of the low maintenance gardener – to just kick back and relax in the garden. There some amazing ways to do just that: check out day beds, garden sofas and hanging egg chairs for a completely luxurious lounge.

Perfect plants
There are lots of plants to avoid if you want a low maintenance garden. That means no annuals and tender plants, so no bedding plants, no vegetables and no sowing of seeds. Also, avoid plants which need staking; delphiniums are the most common offenders, and you should avoid plants which act as slug or rabbit food; hostas are the worst for this.
Don’t put in climbers, they bring a surprising workload. Climbers are either self-clinging, like ivy, and will quickly run out of control, or they need support and will need endless tying in. So what’s left? Shrubs, preferably evergreen like daphne, lavender, holly and euonymus.

A real treat is to find ready-planted pots, these are the sorts of things you can just bring home from the shop and place in the garden – job done.
And finally, perennial weeds are an enormous source of work in gardens – these are the ones with deep roots which seem to get into everything and always come back; things like bindweed, ground elder and knotweed. The mistake is to just keep attacking the tops; if you have any of these weeds it’s much better to take everything out of the bed and get rid of every last bit before continuing.

Seasonal changes and what to avoid
In a low maintenance garden it is possible to have fake grass at a reasonable price, if you install it yourself. There’s plenty of advice on suppliers’ websites about how to do this. Changing your lawn to artificial grass will immediately make the garden look smart and seriously lower your maintenance hours – but do bear in mind this will not provide a habitat for wildlife.
Tumblr media
You could also install a watering system; it doesn’t have to be anything complicated. A leaky hose system is just a hose from the tap and then a connector to a hose which lets the water seep out across the beds. It’s simple, inexpensive to install, works really well, and saves so much time.
Other low maintenance garden ideas includes arches, arbours and pergolas – theses are all easy to install and they don’t have to be hugely expensive. The great thing about these structures is that they instantly transform an area and, most importantly, don’t add to the garden maintenance.

And get hold of some stainless steel troughs and feeders to use as planters; this will create a modern and architectural look in your garden. Get ones large enough to avoid the need for continual watering of smaller containers.
Water features are lovely but you need to look after it pretty constantly with cleaning and clearing. Unless you want some extra work it’s not something to have in a low maintenance garden.
And remember, gardens should be real sources of pleasure; they shouldn’t have to be a burden. The biggest mistake of all is not doing anything about your outdoor space. A bit of thought and effort up front can mean that you’ll really enjoy your garden.

What To Know Before Mosting likely to A Toy Outlet
My acquaintance with producing hardwood furnishings has educated me that concerning half the moment associated with constructing each cabinet, table or bench is actually taken up along with sanding. If the total cost from products mores than 35 percent, the outlet is probably not asking for good enough. The Future Outlet that proceeded, our team shut all of them for a total week to train the partners. This is why we can easily mention that we are actually very ranked in the North Miami Seashore location and also our do work in the vehicle physical body repair shop field is actually unsurpassed.
Tumblr media
In the UK, customers will certainly carry out the English factor, mention 'that was actually lovely', then certainly never go back, plus they will certainly tell all their friends what a rubbish cafe you are actually. Likewise, for an extra $1,000 our company can supply design as well as set up support for your outlet as well as office.
Tumblr media
Searching online merchants also makes it possible for a prospective client comparison shop making sure they are acquiring the most effective bang for their dollar. If you consider our ratio in relations to small store offers, our experts were normally, previously, around 60-40 in between national and also franchise business versus local area operators. Off the high rise you recommended site may observe the stunning hillside country, and also observe the breaking-off points that expose the fault lines. A pawn store Kansas Urban area would be your ideal option if you are looking at obtaining some lending cash by giving out some of your prized possessions like jewelry. That is actually the upcoming and mainly preferred field which most of all of them have had pretty a splendid experience. When you're participating in along with an electronic camera in an outlet, autofocus speed is actually pretty challenging to match up. Without being a leading auto mechanics with bags of drive and also excellent individuals skills this is actually a waste of time starting a business. One of the even more common troubles you'll encounter when rejuvenating aged photos is actually the unpreventable creased photo where the newspaper has broken free as well as you have a pleasant collection going through the image. Offering the complete variety of companies a flower outlet provides is one more important factor to consider in product discussion. The ceramic manufacturing facility shop home windows possess attractive displays, but that is actually merely as you enter into the outlet that you may view simply how huge the store is, and also exactly how substantial the stable of ceramics on series. Capitalize on this anytime you devote and look around as much as $25.00 a very little amount as compared with several online merchants. From these places you can easily look around to discover the best kind of body cars and truck sets to suit on your vehicle. If you are actually to purchase a store vac off the shelf coming from a significant retailer instead getting an industrial shop vac including a quiet and also highly effective Karcher or WAP, after that these are the outcomes you should recognize.

“The company claimed it used every part of the cow except for the moo,” said Diana Cerilla, guiding me into the heart of what she calls the ‘killing room’. In the 1930s, as many as 1,600 cows a day – plus thousands of sheep, pigs, chickens and other animals – met their end in this slaughterhouse, before being processed, packaged and exported around the world. I scanned the grisly array of hooks, pulleys, wheels, chains, conveyors and scales, immobile but ominous, and started to shiver.
On the surface, a long-abandoned meat processing plant on the edge of a sleepy town in the Uruguayan countryside does not sound like the most obvious tourist destination, let alone a Unesco World Heritage site. But the Paisaje Industrial Fray Bentos (Fray Bentos Industrial Landscape) had a profound impact on the way the world eats, creating one of the best-known British brands of the 20th Century, transforming the Uruguayan economy and helping to move global food production into the industrial age. Moreover, the site is an impressive display of once cutting-edge, now slowly rusting Edwardian- and Victorian-era technology. It even, in certain lights, has an eerie beauty, at least for someone with a passion for industrial archaeology.

The complex dates to 1863 when the Liebig Extract of Meat Company founded a factory on the banks of the Uruguay River and started churning out ‘beef extract’ using a technique patented by pioneering German chemist Justus von Liebig. Cheap cuts of meat – widely available here, thanks to Uruguay’s burgeoning cattle ranches – were boiled down to produce a nutritious stock that was originally aimed at convalescing patients. The process was subsequently refined, the liquid solidified, and Oxo – small crumbly cubes of stock – came into being.

A town grew up alongside the German-run, British-financed factory, as workers flocked here from across Uruguay and around 60 other countries. Originally called Villa Independencia, the town was later renamed after a 17th-Century Uruguayan hermit, called Fray Bentos (Friar Benedict in English), who reputedly lived in a nearby cave. Soon Liebig was producing another popular product from off-cuts of meat: tinned corned beef. Oxo and corned beef became staples for working-class people across Europe for whom meat had previously been a luxury item. They also provided inexpensive, long-lasting and easy-to-carry rations for British soldiers during the Boer War and British and German troops in World War One, as well as for polar explorers like Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton.
In 1924, the company was bought by the British Vestey Group and renamed Frigorífico Anglo del Uruguay. Taking advantage of fast-developing refrigeration technology, ‘El Anglo’ started exporting frozen meat around the world, alongside Oxo, corned beef and more than 200 other products, from leather to soap, sausages to jams. In 1943 alone, 16 million tins of corned beef were shipped out from Fray Bentos, the vast majority used to power the Allied war effort. The products even earned a royal following: “I remember eating corned beef until it came out of my ears,” Prince Charles told reporters when he visited Uruguay in 1999.

Today the plant is open to the public. The office buildings have been renovated and now house a museum with exhibits from the plant’s heyday, including vintage typewriters, classic posters, rudimentary firefighting equipment and rickety delivery trucks. Another section has been taken over by a local university, keeping alive the plant’s technological traditions. But most of the rambling complex has been left as it was, and wandering through these vast, silent, low-lit buildings is a haunting experience.
The engine room looks like a scene from a steampunk comic, with rusted diesel-powered generators, huge turbines and steam compressors festooned with levers, valves and wheels connected by a multitude of winding pipes and chimneys. On the walls next door are marble-panelled units covered with the dials and switches that controlled the plant’s electricity production: in 1883, this became the first place in Uruguay to generate electricity. “The factory reminds me of the Charlie Chaplin film Modern Times,” said Cerilla, the museum manager, as she showed me round.

Outside, a soaring water tower looms over a crowd of interlinked brick, concrete, glass and corrugated iron buildings. Many are off-limits for safety reasons, including the monolithic cold store, which once held up to 18,000 tonnes of frozen meat. But it is possible to poke round the Casa Grande, the manager’s house, an opulent mansion with stained glass windows, two pianos, hardwood floors and a gong to signal the start of a meal.
“This was the industrial revolution in Uruguay,” said guide Nicolás Cremella. “Fray Bentos was really important to Uruguay – it was the country’s real capital, not Montevideo. It was the only industrial meat company, and provided jobs throughout the country.” But while the company may have provided employment locally, the profits headed overseas.

Fray Bentos products remained popular in post-war Europe, but slowly fell out of favour as food technology developed and eating habits changed. The Anglo plant passed on to the Uruguayan government in the late 1960s, and eventually closed in 1979.
“It was a company town, and it was terrible for people when it finally shut down,” said Cerilla, whose father and grandfather worked at the plant. “Lots of people left, and many emigrated.”
Despite the initial gloom, Fray Bentos town recovered. Today it has a flourishing paper pulp industry, and in 2015 it received a further boost when Unesco granted the Anglo plant World Heritage Site status. (The Fray Bentos brand, incidentally, is now owned in the UK by Baxters, which still uses it for a range of tinned pies, puddings and meatballs.)

In the late afternoon, I headed back into town via Barrio Anglo, a suburb of around 300 homes built for the company’s senior staff. The smell of mowed grass, tree blossoms and barbeque smoke hung in the air as I wandered past clusters of simple bungalows with corrugated iron roofs and luxuriant gardens. Nearby were the golf, tennis, football and rowing clubs that once formed the focal point of expat life.
This was the industrial revolution in Uruguay
An insight into this period is provided by S W Johnson, a British manager at the plant in the 1930s. “We had the ‘Anglo Social and Athletic Club’, with its hall for dances, a snooker/billiards room, bridge room, library which only carried English books and magazines… and a bar (the Uruguayan attendant also accepted bets on the then illegal quiniela or numbers game)… As we were not then blessed or cursed with television, and the radio [was] mainly used for listening to the BBC, which brought news from ‘home’, we led a very active life,” he wrote in an account featured in Andrew Graham-Yooll’s Uruguay: A Travel and Literary Companion.
By the time I reached the town centre, it was early evening and life was returning as locals rose from their afternoon siestas. A group of children played hide-and-seek in the main square, Plaza Constitución, ducking down in the cast-iron bandstand, donated by the company to the town in 1902 and a replica of one that once stood at the Crystal Palace in London. Parents gathered on benches to sip mate, the local caffeine-rich herbal tea, while monk parakeets cawed from their perches in the many palm, willow and palo borracho trees.

For dinner, it seemed fitting to sample the product that, above all others, put the town on the map. Uruguayans eat more beef than anyone else in the world – around 56kg per person a year – and the cattle industry is a key part of the economy. But though Fray Bentos remains synonymous with corned beef, few locals eat it today. “We don’t like eating meat from tins, we like fresh meat,” Cremella told me. “People in Fray Bentos may have tins of corned beef at home, perhaps on the shelf as a [trinket or] souvenir, but not to eat.”
Sure enough, none of the restaurants I visited had corned beef on the menu, nor did the first three supermarkets I stopped in. Eventually, as I was on the verge of giving up, I found a small store with a couple of tins for sale: ‘Marca Uruguay – Industria Brazil’, the labels read: ‘Uruguay Brand – Made in Brazil’.
