Another day, another tank. This time 35 ft underground and limited scaffolding. Smell of JPTS fuel in the air.

One year later
Last Saturday was the Senior Resident Roast, the celebration dinner for the graduating senior residents where, more than anything else, they make fun of the quirky habits of each senior.  This weekend is Taste of Tacoma, Tacoma’s own little fair at Point Defiance.  These events triggered a lot of introspection for me this week.  I landed at Seatac the day after last year’s roast and I remember Taste of Tacoma being the first time I got to know Steph and Kyle.  It has been a full year since I’ve moved to Tacoma and this year has undoubtedly been the most exciting year in my life.  Sprinkled with the highest highs and the lowest lows I’ve ever felt, it was definitely a year of personal growth, professional progress and new adventures.. oh yeah, and I got married!
Sitting here this Saturday morning, in a little coffeeshop in the U-district that has subtle hints of Krankies where I spent many a Saturday morning back in Winston, I am supposed to be getting my shit together for school that starts in 2 months. But my mind keeps wandering to the whirlwind of the past year, to the whirlwind what awaits me in the next few years, and mostly the serenity that I feel right now in this place and in this moment.  For my entire life, I’ve always been stuck in the past or the future (mostly the future), and never felt like I was satisfied with what I had at the time.
“I can’t wait to get to college, that’s when life is going to start.  What do I need to do to get there?”
“I can’t wait to graduate, that’s when life is going to start.  What do I need to do to get there?”
“I can’t wait to leave Winston, that’s when life is going to start.  What do I need to do to get there?”
For the first time that I can articulate, I feel like I belong here.  Not just physically in Tacoma or with Alex, but in this moment in time, in this place in my life, I am very conscious of the present.  And I am happy.
Since I’m not going to be able to focus on anything remotely productive, I figured I’d just jot down some thoughts that have been running through my mind when I’m on the train to work, when I’m going on a walk on my beloved Ruston Way, and when I wake up and look over to my snoring, drooling Alex.
I guess it actually really starts in the spring of 2014.  Alex and I had a serious conversation about the future of our relationship.  Given my business school aspirations and his army career, there didn’t seem much like a future for us at all.  I wasn’t ready to budge on my career, and he couldn’t budge on his.  I showed up at Sajid’s house, crying.  I remember the weather matching my emotions; it was raining.  I told Sajid that we had given up, that there wasn’t possibly a way that we could make it work unless we did 8 years of long distance, which is an extremely big gamble and we all know how risk averse I am.  I was looking for consolation, but I didn’t get it.  Sajid simply would not accept that we had given up. Instead, we sat there all day and made a game plan for the next few years of my life, both professionally and personally.  There are a ton of people I am eternally grateful for, for helping me get to where I am today.  But Sajid is THE person who has helped me jump every hurdle, big or small.  He has helped me see the big long-term picture, like where I am going to be 2 years, 5 years, 10 years down the road.  He has helped me solve little short-term problems, like how to have the conversation with my manager that I am quitting.  He convinced me on that rainy day in April that I could not give up on Alex, and that I would not have to give up on my own dreams.  He convinced me that I could have it all.  As the next months unraveled, we had decided that 2015 was the year I was going to do it all.  Here was the plan:
Crush the GMAT
Apply and get into business school (target matriculation date in fall 2016)
Finish the CFA by the time I start school
Quit BB&T and move to where Alex matches residency after he graduates in the spring 2015
Find a job in new location to be with Alex
Go to Sajid’s wedding in August 2015
Here was the outcome:
Crush the GMAT - DONEZO
Apply and get into business school (target matriculation date in fall 2016) - HELL YES
Finish the CFA by the time I start school - not done (and no intention of finishing in the near future) but did clear L2
Quit BB&T and move to where Alex matches residency after he graduates in the spring 2015 - I LOVE TACOMA AND THE PNW
Find a job in new location to be with Alex - WADDUP MICKEY
Go to Sajid’s wedding in August 2015 - DONE!!!
2015 was the year I fucking did it all.  And more.
Notable things to add to my list (in chronological order):
Explored Vietnam with my sister, and swelled with pride seeing the life she had built for herself in her two short months in Hoi An
Completed my yoga teacher training in Thailand, which really heightened my self-awareness and mindfulness, and has helped me tease out the things in my life that are important and let go of the worry and anxiety of the things that are not important (abhyasa vairagyabhyam tan nirodhah)
Met some really inspirational people in Thailand, most notably Thantapat, who I still think of fondly and admirably
Traveled alone in SE Asia, renewing a sense of independence and confidence in myself
Spoke at Sajid’s wedding
Had the best yoga experience in my life at The Yoga Barn in Ubud, Bali.  The class was very crowded, but I had started the morning with yoga, spent the entire day walking through the rice paddies in Bali, and there was just something really magical and inspirational in the air that night
Spent time in Ong Noi before he passed last February
Road tripped with my parents through the gorgeous land of New Zealand
Made new friends in Tacoma
Questioned my self-worth during two months of varying degrees of unhappiness and despair.  We will not into detail here, but overcoming this period of time was a big fucking deal for me.
Got rejected from Duke, Berkeley, Stanford, as well as hundreds of potential employers.
Got over the fear of cold-calling and cold-emailing strangers for career advice
Scored a sweet job with Disney that combined my love for excel and data analysis with my curiosity in technology, and with my interest in high level strategic impact. I joke all the time about how in the work-life balance view, I do more life than work, but that’s really just compared to my perspective at BB&T, where I thought about work all the time. I really do love my days at Disney. I have a lot of fun with the work I do and my days just FLY by, unlike at BB&T when I was constantly counting down minutes to leave.
GOT INTO DARDEN WITH A SWEET SCHOLARSHIP
Quickly turned my contractor role into a full-time position.  If business school wasn’t on my mind, I would’ve LOVED to stay at Disney longer.
Got married! :) This was definitely not on the list of things to do for a while but this was by far the best decision I made all year.  I’ve watched him go through his own high highs and low lows during his tumultuous intern year, and every day, I am more proud of and more in love with the man he is and of the man he is becoming.  I am so grateful to have him by my side, supporting me, loving me and going on new adventures with me. I am so excited that we get to go through the rest of our lives together.
GOT INTO KELLOGG!!!!!
Had a free Memorial Day Weekend because I chose not to take the CFA this year, which was, after getting married, the next best decision I made all year
Explored the beautiful PNW.  I am so in love with living here, and if not for family on the east coast, this would definitely be top of the list of places I’d want to be long term
Had a ton of visitors come to play :)
It indeed has been an amazing year, and I am so excited about the next two years in Chicago, and the next million years with Alex as we continue on this journey of life.
PS – I am still not eating meat or dairy!  It has been almost a year since I went vegan.  Granted, I am now definitely a cheagan (“cheating vegan”, thank you Venus Williams for the term), allowing for seafood and meat broths (how else can I eat pho and ramen?!), and I’ll slip up every once and a while with meat and cheese (because, hey, you only live once).  All I gotta say is, thank god for vegan cheese so I can still eat pizza once a week :)
