Day 1: Favorite Mako Line/Exchange

Raleigh Becket: What do you think?

Mako Mori: I think you’re unpredictable. You have a habit of deviating from standard combat techniques, you take risks that injure yourself and your crew. I don’t think you’re the right man for this mission.

Raleigh Becket: Well, thank you for your honesty.

Picking a favorite Mako line is nigh impossible for me, but I wanted to highlight this exchange because a) the pivot from flirting to bluntly telling him she doesn’t think he should be there is very funny and b) I’ve always taken this as the moment they became drift compatible.

What exactly causes a person to be drift capable is left vague; imo, the key is a willingness to be emotionally honest, and because Mako chooses not to politely dissemble when he asks for her opinion of him, they leap forward to a greater level of intimacy than just-introduced colleagues.

A level of intimacy that the scene also represents visually: they begin in all of their layers, and end with Mako removing one of her layers and taking a second look at Raleigh, seeing what’s below the surface.

Mako Week 2021 Day 1 - Favourite Line/Exchange

It's not obedience, Mr Becket. It's respect.

Pacific Rim is a Western-made film, and the scene this occurs in is almost a very American-feeling 'hotshot pilot dgaf about authority' moment, but this line makes it very clear that Mako and Raleigh are coming at the situation from very different places and thus subverts the trope - Mako isn't blindly following orders, she's deferring to the judgement of her father and commanding officer, and that judgement is typically shown to be sound -Pentecost acknowledges that Mako and Raleigh are the most compatible combination and gives them a shot in spite of his feelings, pulls them from combat when it seems like the risks involved are too high, and sends them into battle when Raleigh sensibly points out that they now have the best chance of success rather than because of any of his more emotional appeals. In an era where people routinely refuse to follow sensible instructions because they apparently have the right to be dumbasses, it's quite nice to see something where the day is won through competent leadership that recognises the need to listen to competent subordinates, who in turn recognise when to raise objections and when to back down. Mako is right to respect Pentecost, and Raleigh is right to defend her abilities and their partnership. Neither viewpoint is explicitly presented as superior.

That reflection of Mako's differing values to Raleigh's is quite wonderful, because she's spent her teenage years and adult life outside of the culture she was born in but this line suggests that she still holds at least some of the values her bio parents would have taught her. Admittedly, I'm a white person so the amount I can actually say about this is limited, and I very much hope I'm not overstepping, but I do know that the Kaiju genre as we know it was very much shaped by Japanese culture and history.

Lady Danger is a very American machine with a very American pilot, but his partner is a Japanese woman who grew up in Japan, speaks Japanese with her adopted family, and holds at least some Japanese cultural values. And those many differences don't have any sort of negative impact on this team's ability to relate to each other and form connections to each other.

Humanity is incredibly diverse, and there is strength in that diversity.

i absolutely love mako mori, so i’m participating in @theloccent​‘s mako mori appreciation week! day one is favourite moment—my favourite mako mori moment, is, without a doubt, the sparring scene—you can feel through the screen that this isn’t just a fight, it is, as raleigh put it, a dialogue. unfortunately i can’t gif the entire scene because it’s like three minutes long so i have to chose my very favourite moment which is probably this one:

Today’s prompt is “warmth.” I deviated from this a little bit by not focusing the scene on its spring setting, but the sentiment is that hope brings warmth.

Day 3: Underrated Mako Moment

This is Mako Mori. One of my brightest, also in charge of the Mark 3 restoration program.

Mako rebuilt GD, which is extremely cool of her and also symbolic as hell.

Mako built the means by which she could share her grief, defeat her monsters and avenge her family. She restored Raleigh’s ability to connect with other people after the loss of his brother. She provided the heart needed for the PPDC’s mission to succeed. And she added a sword, because everything’s better with swords.
