Hiruzen: So ⊠so tell me again what you want me to do â ?
Tsunade: We want you to make it legal to marry rogue nin.
Hiruzen: But why?
Jiraiya: Because we want to marry Orochimaru.
Hiruzen:
Hiruzen: Iâm sorry? WE? As in, BOTH of you at the same time??
Tsunade: Yes. I suppose thatâs another thing weâd need you to make legal, multiple-person marriages.
Jiraiya: See, I want to marry Tsuna because, well ⊠*gestures to the front of her chest* Sheâs got some amazing attributes, right?
Tsunade: And I want to marry Orochimaru because heâs someone I can really talk to about my medical jutsu interests.
Jiraiya: And Orochimaru used to always say how he wanted to marry ME, so Tsuna and I figure that we just avoid an awkward situation and all three of us just marry together.
Hiruzen:
Hiruzen: I ⊠donât know where to begin, here. How could I have possibly failed you this badly as a Sensei?
Hiruzen: Three-person marriage aside, Orochimaru abandoned the village! Heâs not that friend you remember anymore, heâs a dangerous criminal! For Godâs sake, Jiraiya, have you forgotten that time he tried to kill you?!
Jiraiya: Oh, I remember. Seeing his face right before he would have stuck his dagger in my chest ⊠that was the first time in my life I ever got that feeling ⊠you know, down there ⊠from another man. If thatâs not love I donât know what is.
Hiruzen: I just donât know where ⊠where did I go wrong? Did I install no sense of morality in either of you, no concept of right or wrong? I â
Tsunade: By the way, Sensei ⊠howâs that baby youâre supposed to be looking after?
Jiraiya: The one you promised his dying mother that youâd do your very best to take care of?
Tsunade: He must be somewhere around here, right? I mean thereâs no way a child that tiny and helpless was just stuck in an apartment somewhere, left to fend for himself?
Jiraiya: Because that would really be in violation of this âmoralsâ and âright and wrongâ stuff youâre trying to tell us about, right??
Hiruzen:
Hiruzen: ⊠so at your wedding, are you and Orochimaru wearing suits and Tsunade a dress, or are you thinking of mixing it up a little?

Happy Birthday?
He could do this. He'd built a battle mech into a biplane, created a false Chaos Emerald, built a TV out of paperclips, and reprogrammed a super computer using dishwashing detergent and toothpicks...so baking a cake? Pfft.
Amy had given him a dubious look and asked if he was sure he didn't need help, but Tails waved her off. Oh, she of little faith. It was just a cake. What could go wrong? The pink hedgehog insisted he call her if he needed her help, and Tails rolled his eyes. "Yes, Mom." He'd groused. Amy had stuck her tongue out at him but finally left, and Tails marched to the tiny kitchen nestled in the corner of he and Sonic's home.
Tails had several hours until the surprise party that afternoon, and Shadow had been tasked with keeping the birthday boy distracted until it was time. Nothing could go wrong.
...Famous last words.
HP?
"Getting slow in your old age, faker?"
"You're one to talk! How old are you know, Shadster? Pushing the 90s, aren't we?"
"Don't call me Shadster, and I'm immortal; I don't age, rat!" Shadow grabbed Sonic's wrist and flung him towards the nearby tree, momentarily forgetting he wasn't supposed to actually be fighting his rival, just distracting him. Ridiculous. Shadow snorted. The things he did for the pink hedgehog...
Sonic used the motion to his advantage, curling into a Spin Dash around the trunk and tackling Shadow on the rebound. The pair rolled in a tangled mass of blue and black fur, trading blows back and forth. Shadow paused, fist raised, but ruby eyes focused on something beyond the clearing he and Sonic had demolished in their spar. "Hedgehog, is that smoke?"
Sonic shoved Shadow off him and rolled up onto his knees to see the black pillar raising into the sky above the treeline. "Yeah, looks like it. Someone must be starting a bonfire."
Shadow gave him an unimpressed look. "Correct me if I'm wrong-,"
"Which you usually are." Sonic cheekily interrupted. Shadow rolled his eyes and punched him.
"But that smoke is coming from the area where you live with the fox, is it not?"
Sonic did a double take and his stomach dropped. "Oh, Chaos, not again." The blue hedgehog complained, shooting to his feet. "That kit is so grounded." He grumbled and gave Shadow a two-fingered salute. "It's been fun, Shadster, but I gotta juice." The Hero of Mobius was gone before Shadow could respond.
He could head back to his apartment. Technically, his task was complete, and Amy never specified he had to attend the party itself. He could deal with her and hee swinging hammer later.
But...Amy had said that she was going to ensure the fox knew what he was doing...and if there was a fire...
Shadow groaned. "She owes me." He dusted himself off, sighed, and relucantly followed the smoke pillar still rising, cheering himself with all the ideas thought of for the pink hedgehog to pay her debt.
When he arrived at the house, it was miraculously still standing but still yet smoldering, and Sonic stood with his arms crossed over his chest, foot tapping impatiently on the ground, and the sternest glower on his muzzle directed towards the fidgeting two-tailed fox kit in front of him, his hands behind his back...with slight tendrils of black smoke wafting out behind him.
"I'm waiting, Miles Prower." Sonic reminded the fox.
Tails gulped, ears flat against his head at the use of his birth name. He was really in for it now, but his self-preservation ran away with his mouth. "At least the house isn't completely destroyed! And it's just minor damage, I can fix it easy-,"
"Miles."
Tails bit back a whimper and nodded in defeat, then reluctantly presented the smoldering pan of black brick to his brother.
Sonic blinked. "Is that supposed to be a cake? You nearly burned down our house and got yourself killed for a cake?"
Tails tried to smile. "Happy Birthday?"

Bunnies, today we have a special unholy hour. It's our fox's birthday and I think there's nothing better than giving him a special present.
Your fingers run slowly down the length of Yeosang's back, gently stroking the smooth, bare skin up and down. He stirred slightly at your soft, intimate touch, a sleepy murmur escaping his pink, parted lips as he slowly began to regain consciousness.
"Happy birthday, Sangie." You whispered sweetly in his ear and scratched him lightly with your nails, leaving a slight reddish mark on his skin.
"Birthday?" His voice is deep and husky from sleep, and damn, it's so incredibly sexy. Rubbing his soft hazel eyes sleepily, Yeosang sits up in bed and leans back against the pillows.
You nod and turn your eyes to the clock on the bedside table. It's midnight.Â
After Yeosang has fallen asleep next to you, his angelic face pressed against your stomach, you stay up for a while before giving up the idea altogether. After all, it would be useless; today was a special day, and you had certain plans for your lover.
It was almost disgusting how much you loved and adored your boyfriend; you felt like you had fallen into a honey pot. It was sticky and sweetâtoo much and never enough. Damn it, Yeosang was absolutely everything in your life, and it was pure luck that this fox had inexplicably fallen in love with you just as deeply and irrevocably. Sometimes the boys would get sick of seeing how cute and in love you two were, but, to be honest, you didn't care at all.
"Yes, baby, it's your birthday." You say this as you reach out to turn on the bedside lamp before turning back to him, your lips pressing against his cheek in an almost instinctive way. "I'm sorry, love, for waking you. I hope you don't mind; I know how busy you are these days."
Yeosang gave a weak shake of his head as he ran his hand through his hair and blinked a couple of times, trying to get used to the soft, yellowish light that was now filling the once-pitch black space of your bedroom. Every time you thought that Yeosang couldn't possibly be any more handsome, he would find a way to prove you wrong. His eyelashes fluttered, framing his hazel-amber eyes with a soft lace, and you found yourself literally dissolving into the sweet gold of his gaze.
"Mmm, you know I can never be angry with you, baby."
"That's good. Can I give you my present now, my beautiful sleepy boy?" You ask, your voice soft and muffled as you move closer to him and run your hand down the side of his neck. God, he's just unbelievably beautiful.
He leans into your touch, and you almost laugh at how your usually dominant and possessive boyfriend becomes so obedient and gentle with just a few sweet kisses and touches. But that is just before he completely wakes up and starts playing with you the way he likes.
"What are you going to give me, baby?" Yeosang asks you with a slight smile on his lips.Â
He leans in to kiss you, and you let him and you lose yourself in the warm, soft movement of his lips for a couple of minutes. As much as you love his rough and brash side, there are times when you wish that Yeosang would be a little more soft and gentle with you. His hand rests on your neck, squeezing weakly, and you take this as a sign to move away, or else what you've planned will fail.
"No, wait, just one more, darling..." You laugh and shake your head as you slide down the bed, pulling the silk cover down with you until you're nestled between his legs. You run your fingers down his stomach, which has a pronounced set of abs, and watch as the muscles clench under your touch.
His foxy amber eyes widen as he finally understands what you meant when you spoke of the gift, and the almost imperceptible tremble of his wet, pink lips tells you of his surprise.
You begin to knead his milky thighs, squeezing the flesh until it turns red, and watch as the initial surprise gives way to something darker and sexier: his eyes narrow, his breath deepens, and a knowing grin forms on his lips. Oh, damn it.
You swallow and try not to give in to the temptation, and just try not to let Yeosang take control of the situation and fuck you senseless. Now it's all about him.
"Sangie, are you going to let me take care of you, my birthday boy? I have no doubt that you will be in love with my special present." You hum to yourself as you start to leave light kisses on his stomach and dig your fingers deeper into his thighsâthighs that you just love to ride on.
"Hmm, if you say so, baby. I can't wait to get my present." His hand reaches up to the top of your head and runs through your hair, and you let out a weak moan of pleasure when he pulls you by the long strands. Hell, he always knew how to make you melt with just a little contact.
You tilt your head so that you can bite into the smooth skin on the inside of his thigh. The initial feel of your teeth sinking into the juicy flesh of his thigh is a bit harsh, but your tongue relieves the pain almost immediately as it runs over the swollen red markings.
This caused a low hiss to escape from his chest, the sound almost feline in nature, and Yeosang, in retaliation, tightened his grip on your hair.
"Hmm, what is it, baby? Is it hurting?" You mutter to yourself before you go back to licking and kissing the inside of his thighs, showering him with as much love as you possibly can.
Yeosang moaned softly, rolling his eyes in pleasure as he felt his cock twitch in his underwear. An impatient whimper escaped his pretty lips as he watched you greedily lick and bite his thighs, leaving hickeys and bruises on his pale skin, deliberately avoiding his heavy boner.Â
"Fuck..." Yeosang curses as you finally squeeze his erection with the palm of your hand, a hint of relief appearing on his gorgeous face now that his cock is getting the attention it deserves.
You looked up at him as you stuck your tongue out and pressed it against his clothed cock, drooling on the fabric and leaving a wet spot on it.
"Don't tease me, baby." You can hear the note of warning in his hoarse voice. It amuses you, but at the same time, you know better than to play with fire. Yeosang can be sweet, but only when he wants to be.
You pull his boxers down before you slide your palm back around his warm, wet from pre-sperm cock and let him thrust his hips up, chasing the pleasure like he's a horny teenager getting his first handjob.Â
You ran your hand over his cock a few times, feeling its heavy weight pulsate against your palm, before licking the swollen red head of his cock and collecting drops of pre-cum with the tip of your tongue. The bitter-sweet taste of his pre-cum makes you moan as you swallow the sticky liquid, which is mixed with your own saliva.
A shiver of pleasure ran through his body in response to what you were doing. You always knew how to handle his cock properly to make him squirm. Every time your warm mouth slides over his thick circumference and your tongue wraps around that wet head, he practically gasps for breath, and it's about the only thing that can make him whimper and sob. The rest of the time, Yeosang wants to listen to you make those pathetic, erotic sounds.Â
You run your tongue along the base of his cock, leaving sloppy kisses all along its velvety length, worshipping his big, thick dick with your mouth. His chest rises and falls with heavy breaths, and he rolls his gorgeous foxy eyes as you take the head in your warm, wet mouth and start to suck it sweetly.Â
He tightens his grip on your hair, groaning deeply. The veins in his neck swelled and pulsed with the pleasure flowing through them, heavy and hot as molasses.
"Fuck, baby..." His hips jerk as you swallow his cock all the way to the base, pressing your nose against the smooth, hot skin of his pubic area. The sight of it alone was almost enough to make him cum right then and there.
"Fuck, love, don't stop. You take me so good, damn it. Please." Yeosang's praise sounds like melted honey to you, and he sobs softly as you swallow, the walls of your throat tightening around his cock in the most delightful way.
You look up at him with your eyes clouded with desire, the tears gathering in the corners of your eyes, and it seems to excite him all the more. Yeosang pulls on your hair again, causing your mouth to slide up to the length of his cock.Â
It's a silent command: Start to move now, baby.
You obediently obey and begin to bob your head up and down at a fairly steady pace. The sounds of your soft gagging mix with the wet, disgusting squelching of your saliva and Yeosang's pre-cum filling the room. But to him, it was like real music. You whimpered around his cock as he lifted his hips up and down, hitting the back of your throat a little harder than you thought it would. The fact that you didn't tell him to stop just made him want to do it over and over again, not wanting to miss out on the opportunity to fuck your throat as if you were his own personal fuck toy. Warm and tight sleeve for his dick.Â
Sometimes he even has to think about what he would like to fuck more: your sweet, pink pussy or your hot, slippery throat.
"God, your mouth really is an amazing gift, baby." Yeosang moans, trying to match the rhythm of your movements, pushing his hips harder into your mouth. Your tongue pressed flat against his cock, the thick vein of it dragging along the wet, soft tongue every time the head of it hit the back of your throat. "I need you so much. I'm so in love with you, baby. You're mine. My damn perfect girl."
As you swallow around him again and Yeosang lets out a low, velvety moan, shuddering as thick, when his orgasm consumes him, hot cum spurts down your throat, forcing you to swallow all of this in one go. You lazily run your hand over his sensitive member a few more times, prolonging his orgasm as you do so. When he's completely drained, you remove his cock from your mouth. Thin strands of cum and saliva drip from your lips onto his skin, and you stick out your tongue to lick them off.
Your hands gently massage the tight muscles of his thighs. A few minutes pass before you sit on your knees and look at how beautiful and hot your boyfriend looks right now.
"This is the perfect gift for me, baby. I love you." He whispers as he reaches out with his hand to wipe away the saliva and cum from around your swollen, soft mouth. He almost gets hard again at the sight of your shiny lips. But can you really blame him? You're always so fuckable and so tender. He is a man in love. Sue him for it.
Now that you have successfully given him your gift, you smile sweetly at him and allow him to take care of you. He was very good at this, always making sure that he expressed his gratitude with endless praise and gentle actions. He leans forward and kisses you, even though your mouth was on his cock a few minutes ago. His lips lingered on yours, prolonging the tender, intimate moment before he pulled away with a sigh of satisfaction.
"Shall we take a shower?" You ask, looking at him through your long lashes. Really, the only thing on your mind is whether he'll fuck you now. And God, you don't want him to go easy on you.
"Of course, baby. That's just what we need, isn't it?"
You don't answer him; you crawl out of bed and make your way to the bathroom, almost vibrating with excitement. But before you step into the bathroom, you turn around in the doorway and look at Yeosang, who is still lying on the bed. His body is glistening with sweat, which makes the relief of his chest and abdominal muscles look all the more attractive and delicious. His soft hair is tousled, and there is a beautiful strawberry blush on his cheeks.
Damn it, you are so very much in love with this man. Your heart is literally going to stop because of how much you are in love with him.
"Sangie, happy birthday, my love."

[ âïž ] ââ choi yeonjun x gn!reader âžâž hybrid au , fox hybrid!yeonjun , hybrid rescue mentions , owner!reader , tooth rotting fluff , kind of sad if you think about it too hard , cuddling , forehead kisses , could be read as platonic
a/n âžâž happy yeonjun day !! this was inspired by my rescue fox hybrid yeonjun hcs that i have with @mapofthemazeinthemirror ... just had to write something small and cute <3 hope you all enjoy!
â¡ âžâž ê° 1. 0k words ê± â§ ê° m. list ê± â§ ê° reblogs and feedback appreciated! ê±
yeonjun had never had a birthday before. he wasnât even completely sure what a âbirthdayâ even wasâ when you had asked him a few days after bringing him home when he was born, he shrugged his shoulders and told you that truthfully, he wasnât sure. it didnât matter much to him, anyway. he had other, more important things to worry about when he was fighting for survival every day in the woods. he didnât understand why his answer seemed to upset you so much.
unbeknownst to him, you reached back out to the rescue that was his home for so many years, hoping that they had the answer you were looking for. they told you that they couldnât be one hundred percent sure, since yeonjun was born in the wild, but they had calculated an approximate birth date based on his time in the shelterâŠ
The thirteenth of September, 1999. just a mere four months after you had first brought him home.
You threw yourself into planning a surprise party, just for the two of you; you stocked up on all of yeonjunâs favorite foods, hiding them away from his prying eyes and keen nose. you ordered decorations for the apartment in all of his favorite colors, down to the wrapping paper you wrapped all of his gifts in. you worked tirelessly the night before while the fox hybrid slept, set everything up so perfectly for when your sweet boy wakes upâŠ
you called out of work so you could stay with him all day, let him hog up every bit of attention he wanted from you. he hated when you had to leave him, and you felt terrible every time, but you had to go and make money so you could afford to take care of the both of you⊠yeonjun understood the best he could, but he still whined and pouted every morning while you got ready for your shift. you wanted to make sure his first ever birthday was as perfect for him as you could possibly make it.
âhappy birthday, jjunie!â you shout when the hybrid steps out of his bedroom the next morning, arms out to hug him under all of the banners and ribbon. behind you his gifts were stacked high, nearly as tall as you were, and you began to worry if you had taken it a little too far as yeonjun stood still and his wide bewildered eyes darted around the living room to take everything in.
âwhat?â he asks, cocking his head like a puppy.
âitâs your birthday today!â you replied with a giggle, stepping forward to hug him yourselfâ yeonjun didnât hug back, too distracted by all of the glittery decorations and presents, the food on the kitchen table. he was still getting used to your sometimes smothering affection anyway, so you didnât let it bother you.
âit is?â
âyes, silly!â you pull back from the hug to study yeonjunâs face; his fluffy fox ears stood straight up amongst his messy bed hair, twitching in curiosity, his pouty lips open in surprise showing off his little bunny-like teeth. you resist the urge to coo at him, knowing how much he hates it when you baby him. âyou didnât know your birthday, so i asked the shelter, i hope thatâs okayâŠâ
after a few more moments of looking around in shock, yeonjun nodded slowly, his puffy tail swishing behind him. âwhat does my birthday mean?â
âit means youâre a year older than you were.â you giggle. âyou were twenty four yesterday, now youâre twenty five today. do you feel any different?â
ânot really. is all that food for me?â
yeonjun still didnât seem to understand birthdays that much, even as you tried to explain it to him as he shoveled food into his mouth. you couldnât blame him one bit, growing up feral and away from humans, never catching on to the human-centric customs that surround him now as an adult. it was one of the things that you loved about him the most, if you were being honest with yourselfâ his childlike curiosity about everything around him, the sincereness in his ignorance, the feral in him waning more and more every day as the two of you grow closer. you donât want him to lose that part of himself, donât want to erase what made him unique.
but as you watched him tear into his presents, the first presents heâs ever received in his life, you couldnât help but grow excited to share with him even more of the human world. you kept the gifts simple, just clothes you thought heâd like and toys to keep his hybrid side happy and entertained; he thanks you after every one, his sweet toothy smile growing larger until it lights up his entire face. it dug deep into your heart, haunted you as you finished up the early celebrations and went on with your day. you wanted nothing more than to see yeonjun smile like that every day, especially after how much hardship he had been through before he came into your life⊠your sweet fox deserved the entire world, and you would do anything you could to make sure he had anything he could possibly want and more.
âthank you,â he whispers to you later that night, cuddled with you in bed because you couldnât refuse his pouting. âi like birthdays. do i get another one next year?â
you canât get a good look at his face because he has it pressed up against your chest, his pointy ears soft against your skin as they listen to your heartbeat. you tighten your arms around his shoulders, lean into his touch as he purrs quietly to himself, a deep rumble in his chest. he finds it embarrassing when he purrs; youâre pretty sure itâs your favorite sound.
âyouâll get one every year, jjun.â you answer, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead. âand thereâs more than just birthdays. just wait until i tell you about christmas.â

dialogue prompt: â Have you never been touched like this before? â
âââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
To a kid, the word orphan is often used as an insult from other kids. Jeongin was lucky that he never had to hear that word until he was much older. He was just shy of fifteen years when his father died from pneumonia. Old enough to be considered a man but Jeongin didnât feel like a man.
He felt like a lost little boy who just lost his father.
His mother had left not long after Jeonginâs birth. His father had tried his best to explain to Jeongin how his mother didnât love him any less. She just had a different way of doing things. She had things she had to do, tasks to see to and couldnât take a newborn with her.
That was the nature of a kumiho. Others called her flighty, said she abandoned him but Jeongin knew better. He had her journals, gifted to him on his fifteenth birthday by his father on instruction from his mother. Jeongin had spent his free time reading those journals, getting to know his mother through her words. It was a surreal experience for him.
His father couldnât tell Jeongin much about his mother other than that she was incredibly cunning, kind, and compassionate. He also spoke of her beauty. Jeongin had never seen a portrait of his mother and had no idea what she looked like.
âI see her in you,â his father often told him. âYou have her eyes and her hair.â
Jeongin took solace in the fact that he resembled his mother. It was comforting in a way.
When Jeongin was finally thrust upon the cruel world at a young age, he had luckily learned enough skills from his father to survive. He knew how to hunt small game and fish. He grew a simple garden that was enough for one when he harvested it. He had spent time foraging with his father and knew his way around the forestâs shrubbery and other plants.
He knew which ones were food, which ones healed, and which ones killed.
Jeongin was able to raise himself, growing into a man of limited means and he kept to himself except when he needed to head to the village to trade his furs for other things he could not provide for himself, like clothing. Heâd never learned how to sew as he had no mother to teach him and his father also didnât know how.
So another morning was spent gathering the furs heâd chosen to sell, setting them aside for the ones he wanted to keep. And he packed some food for his trip to the village. His walk through the woods was always quite so early in the morning. The sounds of the forest waking up, birds calling out to say good morning as the sky lightened from deep indigo to a light periwinkle, the sun creeping over the horizon.
The first rays of sunshine had started to break through the trees as Jeongin reached the village which was also bustling, everyone having gotten up around the same time as he. He ignored the stares as he walked through the village towards the market, readjusting his bag as he trodden on.
He could hear murmurs and whispers as he passed but chose to ignore them. Sure, he perhaps didnât stick out as much as a full blooded fox folk might, but his blond fox ears, hair, and orange eyes gave him away immediately. Folk around these parts didnât normally sport such a contrasting hair color.
Jeonginâs father had told him he took after his mother after all.
Upon reaching the market, Jeongin looked around, surveying his surroundings and looking for the lady his father had always purchased clothing from. He spotted her and made a beeline as she was folding garments, setting them down on the wooden stall before her.
âMorning,â Jeongin heard her grumble. Unlike the rest of the villagers, this woman had always been kind to him as he accompanied his father, sneaking him sweets and other homemade candies when his father wasnât looking. The caramels were his favorites.
âMorning,â Jeongin parroted as he looked over the linen tunics. His was starting to fit a little too snugly and the threads were wearing out. His pants would last him another winter at least. As he was looking over the tunics, he heard a voice as sweet as honey call out.
âGranny, I canât find the skirts!â
Jeongin looked up in time to see probably the most beautiful girl heâd ever seen in his life appear before him. He stared, awestruck as she walked over to the old woman. She had waist length black hair that fell in soft waves down her back, half of it pulled back and secured with a comb. Her eyes were a chocolate brown, much different than the dark brown or black heâd grown accustomed to.
She was petite, smaller than he was, with a slender frame and a pale complexion. She met his gaze and Jeongin felt as if the world stopped moving. Everything around him seemed to slow, almost as if time was stopping. The sounds around him drowned out as he stared back into those brown eyes.
Her pale, pink lips pulled into a shy smile before she averted her eyes to look at her grandmother. âTheyâre in the chest, not the sacks, dear,â the old woman replied and waved her hands. âIâll get them,â she said, brushing past the girl and around the cart.
The girl looked after her grandmother before stepping towards the stall. Jeongin managed to snap himself out of his trance and had looked down to resume inspecting the tunics. âThis would look nice on you,â the girl said, brushing her fingers over a black tunic.
Jeongin glanced up, meeting her gaze and quickly looked away as did she. He noticed the blush that crept over her cheeks. âIâve never seen you before,â she suddenly said, smiling as Jeongin looked up. âAre you new to the village?â Jeongin opened his mouth to answer but was interrupted.
âHe lives in the forest,â the grandmother said as she returned, arms loaded with fabric that she dumped onto the stack of boxes next to her. âThis is my granddaughter, Haneul,â the old woman said as she started to fold the skirts and place them on the wooden surface of the stall.
Haneul turned to look back at Jeongin. âWhatâs your name?â she asked. Jeongin was caught off guard and forgot to answer, instead just smiling and nodding at Haneul. She giggled as he realized his error, shaking his head before answering awkwardly. âUh, Iâm Jeongin.â
As the old woman folded the skirts, Haneul reached into a small pouch on her hip, glancing at her grandmother before pulling her hand out and quickly handing something to Jeongin when her grandmother wasnât watching. Jeongin glanced down at his hand and felt heat spread to his cheeks.
Sitting in his palm were three wrapped caramel candies. The ones the old woman used to give him. He smiled, tucking them away in his bag before clearing his throat. âI need some shirts,â he announced. âVery well,â the old woman said. âWhat do you have to trade?â
Jeongin ended up trading one of his tanuki furs for three shirts, two light colored linen ones and one black one. He also managed to trade three of his rabbit furs for a new tool set. As he thanked the blacksmith he turned around and bumped into a body.
âIâm so sorry,â he apologized profusely, bowing quickly. The woman heâd bumped into patted him on the shoulder and went about her business. Jeongin was about to turn away when he caught Haneul watching him, an amused smile on her face. When their eyes met, Jeongin felt another rush of heat over his cheeks and waved to Haneul who returned the gesture.
Before Jeongin could turn and start making his way home, he felt an arm hook over the back of his neck, draping across his shoulders. âWell, well, well,â said an all-too-familiar voice. âLook what the dog has dragged back to the village!â
The comment was met with a cacophony of laughter as Jeongin held his tongue.
âHello to you too, Baek-hwa,â he said monotonously. He glanced up at the taller man, noticing he was now surrounded. Baek-hwaâs friends were staring him down and Jeongin felt like this wasnât going to end well. He felt Baek-hwaâs arm tighten around the back of his neck.
âWhat are you doing here, thief, I thought I told you to stay away from the village,â Baek-hwa said under his breath so only Jeongin heard him. âIâm not a thief, Baek-hwa,â Jeongin replied softly. âI just came to get some things and Iâll be going back home now. You wonât have to see me again for a long time.â
Baek-hwa clicked his tongue and shook his head. âYou really should have stayed away.â
It didnât take long for Baek-hwa and his friends to drag Jeongin away from the market and behind a hut before they started laying into him. His bag was torn from his grip and tossed aside as they landed blow after blow on him. Jeongin had learned from a young age that if he avoided trouble, heâd be okay but he knew that wasnât always the case. Regardless if he stayed out of trouble, it always managed to find him.
He leaned against the wall, doubled over in pain as Baek-hwaâs friends goaded him on. âKick his ass!â one laughed. Jeongin glanced at where his bag sat and then looked up. His assailants were too busy egging their leader on. He had a small window. Mustering his strength and taking a deep breath, Jeongin pushed off the wall, knocking over one of his attackers.
He snatched his bag and took off as they shouted after him. He may not be as strong as they were, but he was definitely faster. He was more agile having spent all his life living in the forest. They had no hope of catching him once he made it into the treeline.
Jeongin didnât stop as he vaulted over fallen logs and through the underbrush. He made sure to loop around the long way to lose his pursuers if they were even still following him. He didnât want to take the chance that they would follow him home and come knocking.
It was midday by the time Jeongin finally reached the front door of his fatherâs cabin, pushing aside the curtain that hung there and stepping over the threshold. He set his bag down and moved to peer out the window. He saw no sign of life and let the curtain fall back in place before he went about his business.
His father had been in charge of keeping up the home but without his help, the cabin was slowly falling apart and Jeongin didnât know much about building. There were poorly made patches in the roof that barely kept out the rain and more than once, parts of the roof had collapsed. Jeongin did his best to make it work as he had nowhere else to go.
He was sitting by the fire, heating up some stew heâd made the previous night when he heard it.
A distant crash of thunder. Looking up from the fire, he let out a sigh and glanced up at the roof.
âJust hold out for tonight, please,â he begged the thatched hay. âJust one more night.â
The storm blew in quickly after that, dark, thick storm clouds obscuring the sun and bringing with it heavy rains and strong gusts of wind that whipped around the small cabin, making the walls shake and blowing through the cracks Jeongin hadnât managed to seal properly.
Several times, he was afraid that the roof was going to collapse or a wall was going to cave in and then the entire cabin would crumble around him, trapping him inside.
Rainwater leaked through the shoddy patching, drenching almost everything under it. Jeongin huddled up in the corner as his furniture and almost everything was soaked. The only thing that saved him was the built-in table in the corner.
He had dragged most of his bedding from the bed to the corner, curling up in the only fortified, safe, and dry place in the cabin. It was here that he fell asleep, curled up with his blankets and pillow as well as his bag and the small box his father had left him. The only important possessions in his life.
The storm raged all night and finally blew itself out by dawn, the dark storm clouds retracting as the sun rose, almost as if shooing them away. Jeongin woke as the sun was climbing and crawled out of his cubby, inspecting the damage. His plea to the roof had saved him. The thatching had held up for the most part but it would have to be replaced. Jeongin wasnât sure who he could even ask.
He headed outside to inspect his garden and was pleased to see that the garden remained safe and untouched as he picked up a few twigs that had blown in and tossed them away. His firewood stores were also surprisingly dry with only the top layer soaked from the rains.
All in all, heâd managed to survive another monsoon storm. As he was cleaning up stray leaves and small branches, Jeongin heard voices and looked up, his stomach dropping as he spotted Baek-hwa and his friends. âNo,â he thought. He looked around and darted inside the cabin, starting to grab things, placing them inside his bag as the voices grew louder and louder outside.
âCome on out, thief, we know youâre in there!â came Baek-hwaâs voice. Jeongin swore under his breath, filling his bag with as much as he could but he knew he wouldnât have time to leave out the front door. Heâd be spotted and then theyâd follow.
He dropped the bag by the back window before exiting the cabin to face his tormentors. If he was lucky, theyâd just beat him up and leave quickly and then he could leave. He didnât know where heâd go but now that they knew where his home was, they would be back.
âThere he is,â Baek-hwa said as he stopped, leaning against the fence Jeonginâs father had built to keep their small homestead separate from the forest around them. âThe thief shows his face.â
Jeonginâs fingers curled in against his palms. âIâm not a thief,â he said, a little more forceful than he intended. âStop calling me that.â The smirk on Baek-hwaâs face dropped instantly. âYou raising your voice at me?â he asked, his tone low and dangerously so.
âYou think you can just raise your voice and talk back to me and Iâll let it slide?â
Jeongin held his ground. This was his home after all. âWeâre outside the village,â Jeongin replied. âI donât have to listen to you anymore, Baek-hwa.â
The man laughed, looking around at his friends. âThis is my world, Jeongin,â he said, actually saying the blond fox folkâs name. âYouâre just living in it.â
Jeongin forced a smile. âNo itâs not,â he answered, shocking Baek-hwa. Never before has Jeongin acted so defiantly but like Jeongin said, they werenât in the village. Jeongin wasnât afraid of them out here. Sure he was dangerously outnumbered but he didnât have to worry about causing the village trouble out here.
âIâve had enough of your smart mouth,â Baek-hwa said before nudging the friend standing beside him. âTeach him a lesson, Jae-song.â
The man next to him climbed the fence, landing in the garden and stared Jeongin down before advancing slowly through the small rows of vegetables, making sure to stomp on them as he strode towards Jeongin. âIâm gonna make you wish youâd never been born,â he spat, bringing his fists up.
Jeongin didnât move, standing stoically as he stared back at Jae-song. âBeat you to pulp and leave you for the scavengers,â he added. Jeongin narrowed his eyes. âYour parents must be so proud,â the smaller man retorted, catching Jae-song off guard before Jeongin tilted his head. âOh waitâŠâ he said with a scoff. âTheyâre dead.â
Jae-song gritted his teeth and swung at Jeongin who dodged the blow easily. âPicking on smaller people and beating them up for the fun of it. What would your mother think?â
Jae-song let out an angry yell. âShut the hell up!â he swung again but Jeongin managed to dodge it again, this time pushing Jae-song forward, using the bullyâs momentum to send him running face first into the side of the cabin.
âAnd stay down,â Jeongin added as Jae-song fell to the ground, holding his nose and writhing in pain. âIâm getting sick of this,â Baek-hwa said loudly. âGrab him.â
Jeongin turned as two more of Baek-hwaâs friends hopped the fence and advanced toward him, also kicking and stomping on the vegetable beds as they went. âTwo against one?â Jeongin asked, raising a brow. âHow noble of you. Or is it pathetic that you need help to take me on?â
Jeongin ducked as two separate fists swung at him before kicking out, knocking one of the assailants down and rolling out of the way as the other aimed a kick at him. Jeongin was back on his feet as the one who tried to kick him, came lumbering forward. As he was about to take another swing, Jeongin dodged around him, kicking him in the backside and sending him toppling over the fence.
âEnough!â Baek-hwa said, climbing the fence himself. âI grow weary of this,â he continued, advancing in Jeongin, stalking forward like a panther stalking its prey. Jeongin kept his eye not only on Baek-hwa but also on his friends who seemed like they were going to sit this one out.
âYou sound like some kind of villain, talking like that,â Jeongin noted with a laugh. âI grow weary of your games,â Jeongin mocked, turning as Baek-hwa circled him slowly. âIâm going to end you,â Baek-hwa growled angrily. Jeongin rolled his eyes. âAgain with the villain talk. Come on already,â Jeongin said exasperatedly.
Baek-hwa leaned into his punch as he threw his fist forward. Jeongin managed to block the attack before counter attacking with a blow of his own to Baek-hwaâs side. âYou little shit,â Baek-hwa grunted, reaching for Jeongin who dodged again, pushing Baek-hwaâs hands aside.
The taller man tried again, aiming a punch that Jeongin deflected before hitting Baek-hwa in the throat with his palm. Immediately Baek-hwa backed off, choking from the sudden impact. âGo home,â Jeongin said as he watched Baek-hwa stumble backwards. âNext time you wonât be so lucky.â
As the men helped each other up and staggered out of his garden, Jeongin heard Baek-hwaâs strained voice call out. âWeâll be back, thief. Watch your back!â
Jeongin watched as they disappeared in the forest and breathed a sigh of relief. Never before had he stood his ground against his tormentors. He was grateful for the few self defense lessons his father had given him before he passed.
Jeongin looked down at his mangled vegetable beds and sighed. He would have to go foraging and salvage what he could. He needed to pack up everything and leave tonight. He knew Baek-hwa and his friends would be back.
He entered the cabin, grabbing a basket and heading out into the forest. There was a berry patch not far from his cabin but the terrain made it a longer task of traversing to it. Once there, Jeongin started to gather some of the berries. There he also found wild carrots, chives, cabbage, and potatoes. He gathered what he deemed necessary for tonight as well as some for his trip and started to make his way back.
The sun was starting to set when he reached his cabin and he felt his heart sink and his stomach drop. Baek-hwa and his friends had returned but this time he was really outnumbered. He had half a mind to sneak around to the back of the cabin and grab his bag without being seen but just his luck, one of them turned and spotted him.Â
Before he could turn and run, he was grabbed from behind by two sets of hands, the basket knocked from his grip, and dragged over to where Baek-hwa stood. âNot so tough now,â Baek-hwa sneered. Jeongin looked around at the ten or so men Baek-hwa had brought with him.Â
âJudging by your entourage, Iâd say you arenât very tough either,â he quipped.
For his comment, Baek-hwa landed a blow, punching Jeongin hard in the stomach and causing him to double over in pain. âThatâs for earlier,â he snapped before looking towards one of his friends and nodding. Jeongin looked up in time to see one of the men heâd fought earlier holding a torch. His eyes widened in horror.
âNo,â he said, struggling against the two holding him. âStop!â he shouted as the one with the torch lit the garden on fire before moving towards the cabin. âStop, please!â Jeongin shouted and continued to struggle. âEverything I own is in there! You canât do this!â
Baek-hwa smiled smugly as Jeonginâs fatherâs cabin was set ablaze. âActually, I can,â Baek-hwa said.
As the cabin caught fire and the flames spread, Baek-hwa stepped back allowing the others to take turns punching and kicking Jeongin. âS-stop,â Jeongin coughed. âPlease.â
Baek-hwa laughed cruelly. âThatâs what thieves get,â he said as Jeongin collapsed to his knees, only being held up by the two beside him. Jeongin weakly watched as the flames engulfed his home and burned presumably everything inside. Everything was gone. The cabin, the roof, his furniture, his stores⊠his eyes widened.Â
His mothers journals.Â
âNo,â he thought as he stared at the fire.
He hadnât finished reading them all.
Jeongin struggled against his captors. They held onto him tightly as Baek-hwa watched the inferno with a smirk. With a strength heâd never experienced before, Jeongin managed to pull free from his captors, delivering a punch to each before tackling Baek-hwa to the ground.
His actions were so sudden that everyone was caught off guard as Jeongin grabbed Baek-hwaâs head and slammed it against the ground, dazing the man before he scrambled off him and pushed through the hands that tried to grab at him. He burst into the flaming inferno, shielding his eyes as he looked around. His bag by the window sat untouched.
Before grabbing it, Jeongin darted under the table, tearing through the blankets until he found the bag with his mothers journals. He grabbed it and got up, eyes landing on the trinket box his father had made sitting on the mantle of the fireplace. Jeongin dashed across the room to grab it, stuffing it into the bag with the journals before he moved to the back window, grabbing the bag and heaving it over his shoulder.
Tossed both bags out the window before climbing through. Grabbing the bags, he took off into the forest as the fire consumed his home, the roof finally collapsing. Jeongin turned to look back at the raging inferno as he slung the bags over his back. âNo going back now,â he told himself as he watched the flames dance before turning away from the sight and heading further into the woods.
Heâd never been this deep before. Glancing skyward, he could see clouds were obscuring the stars and he could only assume another storm was brewing. He made his way through the forest, making his way down embankments and crossing streams as he continued deeper than heâd ever ventured before.
As he stopped to catch his breath, he could hear voices in the distance.
âI think he went this way!âÂ
Jeonginâs eyes widened. Baek-hwa and his friends had followed him?! Looking around, he saw a small opening under a tree sitting atop the embankment he was currently at the bottom of. He scrambled up, making his way over and peered inside. He couldnât see much but hoped for the best as he removed his bags and stuffed them through the opening before pulling himself up using the roots of the tree.
He slid into the opening feet first and wiggled into the space. It seemed to be some sort of den. Most likely abandoned but he didnât dwell on it, instead kept himself hidden as he peered out into the forest. He heard footsteps overhead and ducked back into the safety of the small cave waiting for the pounding of his heart to subside.
He waited as the sounds of feet and voices continued around him. âDid you see which way he went?â
âNo.â
âMaybe heâs hiding nearby.â
âWell weâll never see him in the dark.â
âMaybe we should come back when itâs light out.â
âEnough,â a voice Jeongin recognized to be Baek-hwaâs snapped. âHe couldnât have gotten far,â he continued. âSpread out and find him.â
âHow?â another voice asked. âWith what light?â Jeongin guessed this voice to be Jae-songâs. It sounded like him anyway. âHere,â another voice said and Jeongin saw light flicker and dance outside the opening of his hiding place. Glancing back, he could barely see that this was indeed a den. He grabbed his things and scooted back further, hoping to stay out of sight.
He waited, listening patiently as footsteps trudged through the forest, twigs snapping underfoot.
He carefully crawled toward the opening and peered out. He could see two of the men standing nearby as they searched the area. âFind anything?â one of them called. âNothing yet!â another voice called back. âThis is so stupid,â one of the men said softly. âThereâs no telling which way he went.â
The one that had spoken up before nodded in agreement. âI know,â he answered just as quietly. âBut you know how Baek-hwa is. Ever since he saw Jeongin talking to Haneul, heâs just been set on making Jeongin suffer,â he added as he held his torch up, peering around a tree.
âI mean, itâs not like doing all this is going to impress Haneul,â he continued. âShe doesnât even like Baek-hwa.â The second man nodded as well. âI know! Itâs like--â
What it was like, Jeongin didnât get to hear as he watched a shadow cut across the small illuminated circle, passing both men. The second smaller one let out a grunt of pain and Jeongin watched in horror as blood spilled from his mouth, a look of pain crossing his features as he fell to his knees.
âWonjae!â the first man said in shock as his friend collapsed, blood gurgling from his mouth. âWhat happened?â Jeongin watched as the shadow passed again, quick as lightning, passing the first guy who let out a choked cry of pain before falling to his knees as well, blood seeping through his shirt and he fell to the ground. Jeongin froze realizing heâd just watched something kill those two men.
âWhat the hell?â
âWhere are they?â called a voice, drowning out Jeonginâs thoughts. âOver here! Dabin! Wonjae!â
Jeongin watched as two more men entered his field of vision. âAre they okay?â one of them said as the other knelt down to check the bodies of their friends. âTheyâre⊠dead,â he said, his voice shaky. âD-dead?â the other stammered, taking a few steps back.
âWhat happened?â Baek-hwaâs voice called from somewhere above Jeonginâs hiding place. âTheyâre dead!â the one kneeling beside Wonjae and Dabinâs bodies called back. âShit,â Baek-hwa cursed. âGet down there and help them get the bodies,â he instructed someone Jeongin presumed was beside him.
Jeongin watched as two more men appeared and helped pick up the bodies of the two men and carry them away. He listened as the footsteps retreated and pulled back as the area was thrown into darkness once more. He listened as the sounds of the forest came back and he could finally rest.
He tried to get some sleep but his mind wouldnât stop. âWhat was that shadow? Was that what killed those men?â He tossed and turned until he finally managed to pass out.
The next morning, he awoke to find light creeping into the cave and he could finally see. It wasnât a huge den, maybe only big enough for a family of foxes or so. He had enough space to sit up. He could tell it wasnât dug out by whatever previously lived here. Perhaps it was naturally occurring.
He gathered his things and left the safety of the den, squirming his way out of the opening and could see that it had rained the night before. He pulled a flask from his bag, filling it with water before he placed it back and stood up, slinging both bags over his back again. He started the way heâd been going the night prior, moving deeper into the forest.
He continued as the sun rose, stopping briefly to have something to eat before continuing on. He didnât see Baek-hwa or his assailants again as he continued on. He noticed how the terrain started to slope up and he knew he must have reached the base of the mountain. If he could reach the otherside, maybe he could find another village where he could set up a new homestead.
He continued on, stopping when he heard a twig snap from behind him. Turning quickly, he expected to see Baek-hwa or his men. He was met with nothing. He couldnât see anyone or anything other than the trees for that matter. Perhaps he was hearing things?
He turned back and continued forward. Heâd only gone a few more steps when he heard another snapping twig. He froze again, turning his head around to see what was following him but again, he saw nothing. He turned back forward, but instead of taking another step, he waited. Waited for something else.
Another twig snapped, this time closer but instead of looking, Jeongin stayed still. He kept calm, listening as soft steps carried toward him. He spun quickly, catching sight of what had been following him. His eyes widened as he made eye contact with it.
âA fox?â he thought to himself. Looking back at him was a small fox with black fur and golden eyes. He stared back at it, expecting it to run but instead it stared back at him. He watched in awe as it took a tentative step forward, still keeping its eyes on him. Jeongin slowly knelt down as the fox approached, holding out his hand.
The fox looked at his hand and then up at him before its head turned slightly to look at something behind Jeongin. He froze, the hairs on the back of his neck standing on end. He tried to turn to see what was behind him but he felt a blow to the head and everything went black.
You looked down at the man, the branch in your hand as you breathed heavily. âOh my god,â you whispered as the realization of what youâd done crept over you. You tossed the branch aside and looked back down at him. Looking at Clover who looked up at you, golden eyes judging you. âIâm sorry!â you said holding your hands out. âLook, I panicked! I thought he was going to grab you!â
The fox rolled its eyes and you looked away, back at the man lying unconscious at your feet. âShould we take him?â You looked back at Clover who stared back at you unblinking. You nodded. âRight. Leaving him here would be bad. Got it,â you said as you brushed your hands together to get the dirt from the bark off. Clover watched as you reached down, sliding your hands under the manâs arms and lifted, starting to drag him along the ground.
You heaved and pulled, panting as you did only to receive more judging looks from Clover. âLook,â you panted. âYou could help me, you know.â Clover rolled their eyes again before the vision of the fox spun and morphed into a man. âI donât know what youâd do without me,â he said as he waved his hand, the manâs body lifting from the ground.
You smiled at the wizard and dusted your hands off again. âThanks, Clover!â you chirped as he shook his head. You led the way, skipping along the path as the manâs body floated behind you with Clover bringing up the rear.Â
You skipped faster as the cabin came into view. âAlmost there!â you called out to your friend who rolled his eyes as your chipper demeanor. âYou know,â he said as you started up the path leading to the door. âFor someone who is so violent, you sure donât act it,â he continued, guiding the manâs body after you.
âIâm not violent!â you called back as you reached the door and unlocked it, pushing it open and holding the door so Clover could guide the man into the room. âJust put him on the bed,â you said softly as Clover guided the manâs body over to the bed where he hovered for a moment before falling haphazardly on the mattress. âCareful!â you chastised, rushing over to sort out the man, moving his head and arms so he wouldnât be sore when he awoke.
âYou hit him over the head with a log and youâre telling me to be careful?â Clover chuckled as he stood by the door, arms crossed over his chest. âWhat a strange person you are, Y/N,â he added.
You stood up straight and turned towards him. âWell, I must be off,â he said, standing up straight. âWill you be alright, alone here by yourself?â he asked. You shook your head. âRight, just hit him with another log if he gives you trouble,â Clover said with a smirk. Your smile fell. âI. Panicked, okay?â
Clover nodded, waving before exiting the open door. You rushed over to watch as he headed down the path, turning once to look at you waving at him. He raised a hand before turning into a raven and taking flight into the sky. You shut the door and locked it before turning your head to look back at the man on your bed.
âAlright,â you continued, taking a deep breath and walking over, placing your hands on your hips as you took a good look at him. âNow, just who are you?â
Jeongin woke to the sounds of light clattering and the scrape of metal against metal. His head was throbbing. He opened his eyes, blinking rapidly as he tried to adjust. He turned his head, wincing at the pain that followed. He was inside a cabin of sorts.
He could see shelves with books upon books and a desk that was cluttered and covered with papers, writing implements, and an assortment of herbs and rocks. He tried to sit up but his limbs felt heavy. He looked down and noticed a strange purple aura encasing him.
âWhat the-â
âOh, youâre awake. Good,â said a voice and Jeongin looked up, seeing a figure by the hearth where a fire was crackling, heating up a large cast iron pot. The smell of meat and vegetables reached his nostrils and he took a deep inhale. Whatever it was in the obvious cauldron smelled amazing.
âWhere am I?â he asked as the figure turned their gaze away from him and stirred the contents of the pot.
âYouâre in my cabin, what a silly question to ask,â the figure said with a chuckle. Jeongin watched as they set the spoon aside and moved towards the bed. Jeongin looked up as they approached and took a seat beside the bed. âWhat have you done to me?â he asked as the person, he could now see was a female, looked over him, gently turning his head and prodding the tender spot.
Jeongin winced and the figure grimaced. âSorry,â she said. âI hit you over the head.â
Jeongin looked up at her. âYou what? Why the hell would you do that?!â he yelled.
You moved your hand, your finger moving in a quick circle and Jeongin felt his jaw snap shut.
âDonât yell,â you said as you grabbed a basket with some medical supplies in it. âItâs rude.â
âWell, so is hitting someone over the head,â Jeongin thought since he couldnât talk.
âMy name is Y/N,â you said as you pulled out a small vial. âAnd I hit you over the head because I thought you were going to hurt my friend.â You looked down at him and Jeongin felt his heart skip a beat. Your eyes. They were a bright golden yellow. Much like that fox from before.
âDo you remember the fox?â you asked and Jeongin nodded as he watched you pull the cork on the vial. âThatâs my friend Clover. I thought you were going to grab him and hurt him. Foxes arenât exactly revered around these parts,â you explained as you turned the vial over, allowing some to spill onto a cloth.
You set the vial aside and leaned forward, holding out the cloth only for Jeongin to shy away. âItâs okay,â you said softly. âI know your head hurts. This will make it not hurt.â Jeongin hesitated, allowing you to gently press the cloth to his head. He winced but soon, the pain as well as the throbbing went away and he looked up at you in shock.
You winked at him, placing the cork back in the vial and returning the little glass to the basket. You waved your hand and freed his mouth. âWho are you?â he asked softly. You looked down at him unblinkingly. âIâm Y/N,â you said plainly. âI already said that.â Jeongin shook his head.
âI meant like⊠who are you? Are you like⊠a witch?â he asked to which you laughed. âIâve been called that before,â you answered with a nod. âBut more importantly,â you said, leaning forward. Jeongin was unable to pull too far away due to whatever spell you had his body under.
âWho are you?â
Jeongin cleared his throat. âIâ,m uh⊠Iâm Jeongin.â
You sat back up straight. âJeongin, huh?â you said softly, tilting your head. He nodded, glancing down at his body still shrouded in the purple aura. âWhat is this?â he asked, nodding towards the aura. âOh,â you said suddenly, waving your hand and it disappeared.
âI just did that while you were out and I was busy cooking so you didnât try to sneak up on me,â you explained as you started to stand. Jeongin moved quickly, sitting up and grabbing your arm but you were quicker. You managed to roll, pulling him off the bed and pinning him against the floor, his arms pinned to his sides by your legs as you straddled him, your forearm pressing against his throat.
âIâm not your enemy,â you explained softly. âBut donât make the mistake of thinking I wonât hesitate to kill you if you try to hurt me.â
Jeongin tapped the back of your calf, surrendering to your power.
Just as quickly as you were on him, you got up and held out a hand, pulling him up when he took it. âLetâs eat,â you chirped and walked over to the fire. Jeongin stood hesitantly. âSit,â you instructed and he did as you said, moving to take a seat at the table. You grabbed a bowl and picked up the ladle, scooping stew into the bowl before moving to set it on the table.
âItâs hot, so be careful,â you said as you filled another bowl and took a seat across from him.
Jeongin watched as you picked up your spoon and took a bite. âIt canât be that hot,â he noted, to which you looked up. âWant me to throw it in your face and test that theory?â you asked with a smirk, tilting your head. Jeonginâs eyes widened and he quickly picked up his spoon, shaking his head.
âN-no,â he stammered before digging in.
He could tell there was meat and potatoes, maybe some cabbage and rice but it was delicious. He scooped another spoonful into his mouth. âSâgood,â he said as he ate and you smiled, turning your attention back to your own bowl.
Jeongin had forgotten the last time he had a proper meal and ended up eating three bowlfuls of stew. You reached to take his empty bowl but he stopped you. âYou cooked,â he said before getting up. âTell me where to go and Iâll clean them.â You smiled but ignored his comment, taking his bowl.
âYouâre still injured,â you explained. âGo lay down, let me deal with this and then Iâll look at your wounds.
Jeongin watched as you headed out the door and instead of laying down, he started to poke around the cabin, inspecting your belongings. He was used to the small huts in the village where he lived. Nothing this extravagant. Wooden doors that locked, windows with decorative frames were things heâd never seen in person, only ever heard of.
The cabin was one room, like his had been but it was much cozier. There were no cracks for the wind to sneak into, the roof was sturdy wood and slanted to allow rain to run off. There were four windows, two on the wall by the door, one on the outside window and one on the back wall over the desk, framed by shelving. The fourth wall wasnât made of wood. It was made of rock.
âIt must be partially built into the mountain,â Jeongin noted as he stared. The bedroom area was almost entirely encased in rock. It was unlike anything Jeongin had ever seen. It was an extremely clever idea as well. Using a cave as part of your dwelling. If only he had known to do so.
On the other side of the stone hearth was a large wooden cabinet with doors and shelves stocked full of cheeses, sealed bottles, breads, small bowls with salts and other spices. Hanging from an iron circle suspended from the ceiling were various dried herbs and even some small game. Rabbits and birds mostly. He inspected the mantle and noticed a couple portraits and a small trinket box.Â
He moved over to the desk, fingers brushing over the papers on the surface as he inspected them. There were a lot of maps. Maps he didnât recognize, not that he was knowledgeable of maps to begin with. He looked up at the shelving, inspecting the books and their titles. He expected to see this sizable collection in a palace or something, not here in a cabin in the forest, built into the base of a mountain.
Jeongin turned as he heard the door open and you returned with two clean bowls and spoons.
âHaving fun snooping?â you asked with a smirk. Jeongin opened and closed his mouth like a fish out of water trying to explain but you shook your head. âI saw you through the window,â you explained, pointing to the window opposite the rock wall.
âIâm not mad,â you continued. âBut I really do need to inspect your wounds.â
You led him over to the bed and he sat down. âI donât have any wounds,â he protested but you made him lie down and lifted his shirt. âYour wounds are internal,â you explained as you gently prodded and massaged his side, making him wince. âYouâve got a fair amount of bruising here and here,â you said, also placing your hand over his stomach just over his navel.
âWere you in a fight?â you asked bluntly. Jeongin froze, staring up at the rocky ceiling above. You waited for his answer but when he didnât answer, you spoke again. âDid you at least get a few punches in?â
Jeongin chuckled, letting out a soft cry when the motion caused his sore muscles to tense him. âYouâre asking me about my fight?â he asked. You nodded. âWhoever did this packs a wallop. So I hope you got a few licks in, too.â
Jeongin smiled as you rubbed some kind of ointment and the soreness and tenseness in his muscles dissipated. âYouâll have to apply this until the bruising clears up,â you explained as you rubbed some more on his stomach.
Jeongin held his breath as your hand traveled dangerously close to his waistband. âTwo times a day,â you added as you pulled your hand back, wiping it on a cloth and placing the lid back on the small metal tin and handed it to him. Jeongin sat up and took the tin from you. âWhat is it?â he asked.
âAn ointment to help with soreness and bruising,â you explained as you gathered your supplies and set the basket aside. âI made it myself.â Jeongin opened the tin and held it up to his nose, sniffing it. He smelled mint but couldnât tell what else was in it.
âWhatâs in it?â he asked, placing the lid back on it and looking up at you.
âJust some herbs,â you replied. âIâll tell you how I made it tomorrow. Get some sleep.â
You got up and paused when he grabbed your wrist. Looking down at his wrist and then up to meet his gaze, Jeongin managed to blurt out âthank you.â The smile you gave him was one heâd never seen before, not even from the old woman in the village he traded furs for shirts or her granddaughter, Haneul.
âYouâre welcome,â you answered and Jeongin let go of your wrist. âWhat about you?â he asked as you moved over to the desk. âI can sleep on the floor,â you said as Jeongin set the tin of ointment on a small table beside the bed. âWhat?â he said suddenly. âNo,â he continued. âThis is your bed. Iâll sleep--â
He didnât get to finish his words as you turned in your chair and waved your hand at him. âSleep,â you said sternly and Jeongin passed out, unable to fight the darkness as it passed over him, taking him deep into slumber.
The next morning, Jeongin awoke to find himself in bed but the cabin otherwise empty. He sat up, looking around and swung his legs over the edge of the bed. Lifting his shirt, he saw that he indeed had some heavy bruising from Baek-hwa and his friendsâ punches.
He dropped his shirt as the door opened and you entered the room, smiling when you saw he was awake. âMorning,â you said as you carried something in your arms. âOr should I say good day,â you continued as you carried the sack over to the table and set it down.
âLetâs have a look at those bruises,â you said as you walked over and took a seat beside him. Jeongin lifted his shirt for you to inspect. âMake sure to apply that ointment,â you said as you gently poked around the edges of the bruising. âItâll make a huge difference in healing.â
You got back up and headed for the table as Jeongin picked up the tin and opened it. He scooped a small amount and started to rub it into his skin as you opened the sack. âWhatâs in the bag?â he asked, looking up occasionally as he applied the ointment.
âI went hunting,â you said nonchalantly. Jeongin looked up at the rabbits hanging from the ceiling. âWhat about those?â he asked, nodding towards the rabbits. âTheyâre small and we need more meat if youâre going to heal properly. Protein speeds up the healing process,â you explained as you pulled small game from the sack.
Jeongin finished applying the ointment and wiped his hand off on the same cloth you used the night before and got up, walking over to the table. He was surprised to see what you managed to catch. âHunting and fishing?â he asked as he noticed the fish basket.
âIâve been gone all morning,â you replied. âUp before the sun, in bed after it sets,â you explained. âMaking the most out of every day. Thatâs what Clover taught me.â Jeongin smiled as you added the rabbits to the iron circle. âThe fish has to go outside,â you explained and picked up the basket.
He followed you as you headed outside and over to a wooden rack where you had some fish already hanging. âHow does fish tonight sound?â you asked, turning to look at him. Jeongin nodded silently before you turned back to the rack and hung up all the fish.
âI also need to go foraging,â you said as you walked back towards him, stopping at the bottom of the steps leading into the cabin. âWant to come with me?â you asked, looking up at him. He nodded. âSure,â Jeongin said, stepping aside as you entered the cabin.
âGood,â you said and grabbed a sack. âMake yourself useful,â you added as you tossed one to him.
The hike to the spot was a short one and Jeongin was shocked to see the size of it. Not only were there even more berries than at his favorite spot but there were more types as well as all kinds of fungi. He watched as you pulled a small bag from your pocket and moved over to one of the mushrooms.
âThese are really good when you fry them,â you explained as you picked them and placed them in the bag. âTheyâll need to soak for a few hours but we can have them with our fish.â
Jeongin looked around and moved to one of the bushes. âAre these okay?â he asked, pointing to the berries. You turned to look at him and nodded. âNot too many though,â you instructed. âMaybe a sack,â you added. âThere are smaller bags in the large sack I gave you.â
Jeongin dug through the bag and found one before starting to pick berries and fill the bag. Once it was full, he tied it off and picked a few berries to eat. âAnd those?â he asked, pointing to another bush. You nodded without looking. âAll these berries are good to eat,â you replied. âJust a small bag each. I like to make wine with them,â you explained.
Jeongin got to work, collecting berries as you foraged for mushrooms and other plants. When the bags were full, Jeongin insisted on carrying both but you refused, reminding him he was still healing. The walk back, you asked him about his life, where he was from, where he grew up, what his childhood was like.
When you broached the subject of parents, Jeongin shut down as you walked up the path to the cabin. âTouchy subject?â you asked, unlocking the door and letting him in. Jeongin nodded, handing you the bag and watching as you moved to the cabinets. âI lost both my parents,â he finally answered.
âMy mother left when I was young and my father died when I was fifteen. Iâve been on my own ever since,â he explained as you started to store the food you both collected together. âIâm sorry,â you said softly. âI lost my parents to disease when I was young. I was raised by Clover,â you explained, shutting the cabinet doors.
âThe fox?â Jeongin asked, making you chuckle. âHeâs a wizard,â you reminded him. âHe was in fox form while we hunted that day. Heâs awfully quiet in that form,â you explained. Jeongin grimaced as you turned to him, setting the bags of berries on the table.
âSo he raised you?â he asked and you nodded. âTaught me everything I know. Built this cabin and left it to me when I came of age.â Jeongin looked around. âMakes sense,â he said softly. âIâve never seen a cabin like this before,â he explained. âThatâs because it was built with magic.â
Jeongin smiled as you set the empty bags away, hanging them on hooks.
âI have some work to do in the garden,â you announced. âWould you like to join me?â Jeongin nodded with a smile.Â
âIâd love to.â
After a quick lunch of leftover stew, Jeongin helped you in the garden, pulling weeds and pruning the bushes and vines. His garden was small but this garden was twice the size. It had everything from cabbages to potatoes and even pumpkins.
âThis is a huge garden,â he noted as he dropped another cabbage in the basket. âEven for two people.â you nodded as you pruned a tomato plant. âI sell whatever I donât need,â you explained. âNever hurts to have a little extra coin,â you added with a wink.
As the two of you finished up, Jeongin looked at you. âWhere do you sell this stuff?â he asked as you gathered one of the baskets. âAt a village on the other side of the mountain,â you replied. Jeongin rounded on you, holding the other basket. âOn the other side of the mountain?â he asked incredulously. You nodded with a laugh and beckoned him to follow you inside.
Once inside, you stored your harvests away and led Jeongin over to the desk and pulled out a map from under the stacks of paper. âThis is a map of this region,â you explained. Jeongin looked over it in awe. Heâd never seen more than a map of the village and the forest. Your map had so much more on it.
And it was so detailed.
âHereâs the village you told me about and based on your descriptions, your cabin was around in this area,â you explained, pointing out spaces on the map. âHereâs where we are,â you continued, pointing at a small red x on the map. âThe village I sell at is here,â you added, pointing to a black x on the other side of the mountain range.
âHow long does it take to get there?â Jeongin asked, looking up at you. âWell, if you go around the mountains, it can take months,â you answered, shifting your weight from one foot to the other. âBut I use the mountain pass so it only takes a few days,â you added, pointing to two lines drawn over the mountain range connecting the two sides. âWho made this map?â Jeongin asked in amazement.
âClover,â you answered, standing up straight. Jeongin followed your movements, standing upright as you walked over to the hearth and added a couple logs to the dying flames. âHe makes maps of all the regions,â you added. âHeâs a traveling wizard and cartographer,â you added as Jeongin stared at you.
âHe stopped for a while to raise me here,â you explained as you stood up, brushing your hands off. âBut now that I can care for myself, heâs back to traveling again, making amendments to his maps.â Jeongin shook his head as you moved over to the bedroom area, grabbing a small basket from the shelf.
Jeongin looked around the cabin. âSo, now what?â he asked as you sat down on the armchair. You looked up at him. âNow we rest,â you replied with a smile. âItâs too soon to have dinner and I have some knitting to get done,â you continued, pulling out a project you must have been working on for a while.
âYou can read any of the books if youâd like,â you said, nodding towards the shelves. Jeongin shook his head, instead grabbing one of his bags and opening it. He sifted through it until he found what he was looking for. The journal heâd been reading. He settled down on the bed, propping the pillows up against the wall so he could sit up against them.
Jeongin read as much as he could, absorbing his mothers words. He had reached the part of her journals where she had met his father and it was so enchanting to read about his father through his motherâs eyes. He discovered a new side to his father heâd never known. The romantic side.
Their courtship was long according to her and she initially rebuffed him as he was a human but he eventually gained her trust and she warmed up to him. After which, they got married, something Jeongin had never known. He thought it had been a short affair but the time and effort they put into their marriage told him otherwise.
He also learned that his parents had a hard time conceiving a child and that Jeongin was from their sixth attempt. He was the only one that made it full term.
Jeongin dropped his hands into his lap, the journal falling with it as he stared at the wall. You looked up at him. âYou alright?â you asked, noticing he seemed catatonic. When he didnât respond, you set your knitting aside and got up, moving to sit on the bed. âJeongin?â you asked, waving your hand in front of him. That seemed to snap him out of it and he looked at you.
âYou okay?â you asked, your voice laced with concern. He nodded, clearing his throat and looked down at the leatherbound book in his lap. âYeah, I just uhâŠâ he trailed off before looking back up but not at you. He seemed to be looking past you but not at anything in particular. More like he was staring off into a place you could not see. âJeongin?â
âI have siblingsâŠâ he finally said softly and your brows rose in shock. âWhat?â you asked.
He turned his head to look at you. âSorry,â he said, shaking his head. âRandom thought.â
You glanced at the book. âWhat are you reading?â you asked. Jeongin glanced at the book and closed it, keeping his thumb between the pages. âItâs private,â he explained. âSorry,â he added. You shook your head. âNo need to apologize,â you replied. âI meant no disrespect nor was I meaning to pry. Simply curious,â you explained.
Jeongin glanced down at the book again before taking a deep breath. âItâs a journal,â he finally sighed. You waited for him to continue. âItâs my motherâs journal,â he clarified. Your eyes widened. âOh,â you said softly, uncertain of what else to say. âAnd youâre just now reading it? Iâm not judging by the way,â you said quickly. Jeongin simply chuckled before setting the book aside and scooting off the bed.
You watched as he grabbed one of his bags and walked over, opening it for you to see the contents. Inside were a dozen or so leather bound books, all of them identical. You looked up at Jeongin in bewilderment as he set the bag down and joined you on the bed.
âMy mother kept extensive journals all throughout her life. She left them with my dad when she left,â he explained. âDad kept them for me so I could get to know her if she never came back. I think he knew she wouldnât come back,â he continued sadly. âIâve been reading them since my dad taught me to read.â
You looked back at the bag. âHow many are there?â you asked, looking back at Jeongin. âAround fifty,â he answered, a hand reaching up to scratch his brow. âIâve read about twenty of them so far.â Your eyes widened as you looked back at the sack lying unassuming on the floor.
âWhatâs in this one?â you asked, tapping the cover of the one on the bed before you froze. âIâm sorry,â you said quickly. âThatâs none of my business,â you continued. Jeongin shook his head. âItâs okay,â he said, grabbing the book and opening it. âIn this one, she met my dad,â he explained.
âShe details their courtship and marriage,â he continued, flipping through the pages. âShe wrote that it was a huge ceremony and that the reception lasted well into the early hours of the next morning and that they were both so exhausted from the party that they never actually consummated their marriage during the ceremony,â he said with a chuckle.
You smiled fondly, watching him look over the words on the page.
âWhat was your motherâs name?â you asked, drawing his attention. âWell, dad never told me her real name. He knew her as Eun-soo but while she was in Japan, her name was Yuki. So Iâm not entirely sure what she was really called,â he continued.
You looked at him again, studying his features. The fox-like eyes, the orange irises, his blond hair. It suddenly made sense to you. He was like you. He was fox-folk.
âWas your mother a kumiho by any chance?â
Jeongin was caught off guard by the question. Heâd never been asked so directly about it before and as he looked up, his eyes met your golden ones and he knew instantly why you were asking. It was like a switch went off in his head and suddenly everything made sense.Â
Your golden eyes, the magic, being raised by a wizard. Well, maybe the last part wasnât really all that related but in his mind, it still helped him to put the pieces together. You were like him, too. You were fox-folk.
âAâŠare you?â he asked softly, holding your gaze. He could tell by the way your eyes widened slightly that he was on the right track. âOr was one of your parents?â he continued, setting the journal aside. You nodded slowly. âBoth of my parents were fox-folk,â you answered, your voice barely above a whisper.
Jeongin leaned forward. âBoth?â he asked in amazement. You nodded, shifting to face him. âYeah,â you replied. âThatâs amazing,â he breathed. âSo youâre pureblooded?â he asked, to which you nodded. âWow. Iâm only half,â he replied. âProbably why I canât do any magic,â he added with a chuckle.
You tilted your head at his comment. âAll fox-folk can perform magic,â you said, drawing his attention again. âWait, really?â he asked. You nodded, grabbing the journal from his hands and setting it aside. âHave you ever tried?â you asked. Jeongin shook his head no, watching as you pushed your sleeves up.
âItâs easy,â you explained. Jeongin rolled his eyes. âOh sure,â he retorted but you pushed him gently. âI promise it is,â you replied. âItâs so simple, really. Come on, Iâll show you.â
Jeongin watched as you scooted onto the bed beside him, crossing your legs and resting your back against the wall. You closed your eyes, adopting a sort of meditation position. Jeongin watched but when you opened one eye to peek at him, you nudged him and he sighed, adopting the same position.
âDeep breath in,â you said. Jeongin followed your lead, breathing in slowly and deeply, filling his lungs. âAnd out,â you said and the two of you breathed out in unison. âNow, visualize a fire,â you said softly. âA fire? Why a fire?â Jeongin asked. âOw,â he whined when you lightly slapped his hand.
âOkay, okay. A fire. Got it,â he said. âWait, what color is it?â
âWhatever color you want it to be.â
Jeongin closed his eyes again, picturing a fire in his mind. Something bright and pink. âNow, imagine how it feels. Is it hot? Is it cold? Does it burn or does it tickle? Does it smell pleasant or is it rancid?â Jeongin imagined the fire was cool to the touch and it felt like the fluttering of wings. It had no smell.
âOkay,â he said. âNow what?â he asked, opening an eye. âHold your hand out,â you instructed. Jeongin closed his one eye again and raised one of his hands. âPlace it in my hand,â you continued and he did as you said, placing his hand in yours, palm up.
âNow imagine your fire and imagine itâs in your hand. Concentrate and picture your fire in your hand.â
Jeongin focused all his energy, holding his breath as he pictured the pink, cool, fire that fluttered. âDonât forget to breathe evenly,â you reminded him. âBreathing is important.â He resumed breathing as he focused all his mental strength on the fire. He sighed, keeping his eyes closed.
âThis is dumb,â he said. âI canât do magic.â
âIs your fire pink and cool to the touch?â you asked softly and Jeongin hesitated. âWait⊠is mind reading one of the abilities of a full-blooded kumiho?â he wondered. âUh, yeah. But how did you know that?â he asked. âOpen your eyes, Jeongin.â
He did as you instructed and was met with your face drenched in the pink glow of a fire in his hand. The pink fire heâd imagined. He looked back up at you and then down to the fire in his hand. It was dancing, fluttering against his hand. âAre you doing that?â he asked and you pulled your hand away, conjuring up a bright blue flame. âI take it thatâs a no?â
You laughed and the fires both extinguished as Jeongin lost focus. âI told you that you can do magic!â you said excitedly, slapping his knee and then pushing yourself up and climbing off the bed. Jeongin looked down at his hand, excitement bubbling in his stomach.
âIâll get dinner started,â you said as you moved towards the door. âKeep practicing,â you said before opening the door and heading outside. Jeongin kept at it, conjuring a pink flame, making it dance and crawl around his hand as you prepared the fish for dinner. While it cooked, you made a side dish with rice and some of the mushrooms youâd picked earlier.
When it was ready, Jeongin joined you at the table and the two of you ate in silence. âThank you, Jeongin said suddenly, making you look up, eyes wide and bewilderment on your face. âFor taking me in after you bashed my head in,â Jeongin continued. âFor caring for me and teaching me magic.â
Your expression morphed, a smile spreading across your face. âI couldnât leave you out there after I hit you with the branch,â you explained. âClover would have but I wouldnât have forgiven myself if I left you to the elements. And besides,â you continued. âItâs nice having some company that isnât Clover for once.âÂ
Jeongin looked down at his food, cheeks growing warm.
âYou know,â you said, tapping your chin thoughtfully. âIf you want to stay longer, youâre more than welcome to,â you added. âI really enjoy your company.â Jeonginâs eyes widened. âReally?â he asked, trying not to sound too excited. You nodded, smiling at him. âBut you might have to get used to sharing a bed,â you said. âThereâs not enough room in here for another bed and I refuse to let you sleep on the floor,â you added.
Jeonginâs cheeks grew even warmer at the thought of sharing a bed with you but he played it off.
âSure,â he said softly. âNo problem.â
It was indeed a problem he later discovered. While the bed was big enough for two bodies, it wasnât big enough for two bodies and a space between them. Jeongin wanted to respect you and give you as much space as possible but with the size of the bed, it put him right on the edge of the mattress and in danger of falling off.
The next day consisted of about the same routine, some foraging but in a different spot. You taught Jeongin all about the herbs and weeds you used to make ointments and medicines, showing him what cured certain ailments. Afterwards, he helped you on the other side of the garden where the bee boxes were and held the jars for the honey while you handled the bees.
The day after that, you took him fishing with you and he was impressed by the spot you had. No one else was around and as you sailed out on the lake in a boat you proudly told him you helped Clover make, the two of you sat in silence, rods propped up while you knitted and Jeongin read more of his motherâs journal.
Heâd made it to the part where she was pregnant with him and close to her due date. She wrote how she knew he was a boy and how she knew he was going to take after her in both looks and mentality. Jeongin checked his fishing rod before returning to his reading. He heard you clear your throat and looked up to meet your gaze.
âSo what else does she say?â you asked, nodding towards the journal in his hand. âOh,â he said softly. âSheâs pregnant with me in this part,â he explained. âShe wrote about how she knew I was a boy and that I would take after her,â he continued. You smiled at him as you tied off and wove the yarn tails into the scarf you were making. âShe also says she got a letter from a woman named⊠Anitta?â he said and looked up at you.
You merely shrugged and set your knitting needles aside, picking up the scarf and throwing it around his neck. âThere,â you said with a smile. âItâs done.â Jeonginâs cheeks burned as he looked down at the soft garment. âItâs nice,â he said softly and started to take it off. âItâs yours,â you said, grabbing it and wrapping it back around his neck.
âI was going to give it to Clover but I figured I can always make him another and you need one now so,â you trailed off, smiling at him. Jeongin toyed with the material, cheeks burning as he tried to think of something to say before finally settling on a simple and soft thank you.
Fishing ended with the two of you catching a small basket of fish and Jeongin managing to catch a little crawfish which he promptly dumped back in the water. Once the boat was pulled ashore, the two of you headed back down from the mountain lake to the cottage to hang up the fish and settle in for the night.
You made roasted rabbit and potatoes and after dinner, you settled down with your knitting to start another scarf for Clover while Jeongin got to the end of his motherâs journal. He closed it, wrapping the twine back around it and got up from the bed, moving over to his bags.
He reached in for another, pulling the trinket box out so he could dig for the right one.
âWhatâs that?â you asked, looking down at the box. âOh, just a box my dad made,â Jeongin said as he dug through the bag. âMay I?â you asked, setting your things aside. âIâm kind of nosey,â you noted with a laugh. Jeongin chuckled and shook his head. âGo ahead,â he replied.
You grabbed the box and set it on your lap, opening and inspecting the contents.
The box was a beautiful dark wood with a soft lining. It was beautifully crafted and you wondered if Jeonginâs dad knew how much he could have made by making and selling these boxes. Inside the box were a few items, some of great value and others you suspected were more sentimental. There was a silver ring, a loose but rather large gem, some gold coins, and a silver locket. You picked up the stone to inspect and deduced it was a sapphire and was definitely worth a lot.
âThis could fetch you a lot of gold,â you noted, holding up the stone for Jeongin to see as he looked up. âDad found that,â he said, reaching up to rub his eye. âFound it while digging around the outside of our cabin to add to the garden when I was a kid,â he continued and held out his hand.
You placed the gem in his palm and he brought it to his face to look at it. âHe thought the same thing,â he continued. âThought we could sell it for some gold in case we ever needed it. I forgot it was in the box,â he added, handing it back to you to place in the box.
Next you picked up the silver ring. There was nothing of note about it. It was a crudely forged ring made of pure silver. âOh,â Jeongin said, noticing the ring and grimacing. âDad made that. Was trying his hand at smithing,â he added. âItâs ugly but he was proud of it. He made it himself without any help. He wasnât much of a blacksmith. He was more of a carpenter,â he explained.
âWhich is why the box is so nice,â he added, gesturing to the box in your lap.
You dropped the ring back into the box and Jeongin returned to his bag, digging for a specific journal as you lifted the silver locket. It was engraved with a simple fox head on both sides. You carefully opened it and smiled at the first portrait. It was of a young child with light hair. There was no mistaking this was Jeongin.
You turned the locket to look at the other portrait as Jeongin pulled the correct journal from his bag and his eyes fell on the locket in your hand. The other portrait was of a woman. An all too familiar woman. She had the same blonde hair Jeongin had, the same fox-like eyes. It was his mother.
âOh, thatâs,â Jeongin darted forward, his hand closing around the locket and closing it before he took it from your hand. âThatâs my dadâs. Was my dadâs.â he said softly, looking at the silver locket. You shut the trinket box and handed it back to him. âSorry for prying,â you said softly as he took the box.
âNo, itâs okay,â he said as he brushed the silver surface with the pad of his thumb. âI honestly forgot this was even in there,â he added as he looked up and gave you a sad smile. âSheâs very pretty,â you said softly, drawing his attention. âYour mother,â you clarified.
You tilted your head, offering him a playful smile. âI guess youâre pretty, too,â you added, noticing the way he averted his eyes and his cheeks turned peach. He opened the box and placed the locket back inside, closing the lid and setting back with his things.
After he read a bit more and you started to yawn, you called it and set your knitting aside. âItâs going to storm tonight,â you said softly as you got up. âIâm going to put the covers down on the windows so it doesnât rain in.â Jeongin watched as you exited the door and returned to his book as you disappeared.
Outside you undid the hooks holding the covers up and let them down into place, securing them with the wooden rods that slid through two rings on the side of the cabin as well as a ring on the end of the shutter.Â
Clover had done some interesting things when building this cabin but as odd as they were, they worked. You placed the covers for the other three windows down, locking them in place as the wind picked up.Â
You also grabbed the cloth Clover had for covering the garden and hooked it in place with the four hooked stakes in the corners of the garden. You repeated the process, covering the bee boxes before gathering all the fish and bringing it inside to hang up by the fire.
As you closed and locked the door, you could hear thunder in the distance and Jeongin looked up from his motherâs journal. âWeâre safe here, right?â he asked and you nodded, moving to stoke the fire and then joining him on the bed. âThis is probably the most stable building in the region,â you explained as you settled down on the side of the bed youâd claimed and looked up at him.
âYou can stay up if you want,â you said, shifting, pulling the covers over you, and getting comfortable. âJust try to keep the noise down,â you added with a wink which made Jeongin crack a smile. âOkay,â he replied. âIâll try.â
You shut your eyes and tried to focus on sleeping.
But you couldnât. Your mind was full of the portrait in the locket. You rolled onto your back and sighed, opening your eyes and staring at the cave ceiling. Jeongin didnât seem to notice but when you sighed again, he looked up. âYou alright?â he asked and you took a deep breath before sitting up and turning to him. âI need to tell you something,â you said, taking his journal and setting it aside.
Jeongin looked from the journal to you as you took his hands in yours.
âWhat Iâm about to tell you might sound outrageous but keep in mind Iâm much older than I look because as you said before, Iâm pureblooded fox-folk.,â you started. Jeongin met your gaze and nodded slowly. You took another deep breath before explaining.
âYour motherâs name was Keiko. She was from a small island off the coast of Japan. The locals there called it Fox Island. She came to this land as a child with her mother to live in the palace of the king centuries ago. Her mother was a highly sought after healer and the kingâs wife was incredibly sick.â
Jeongin said nothing as you continued.
âWhen your mother was nearing maturity, her mother overheard a plan to marry her off to the kingâs son but her mother had heard that the first prince was a cruel man who abused those around him. She did not want your mother to suffer at his hands so she ran away, taking your mother with her. They left the palace and ran and ran until they reached the coast, hoping it would be far enough away that the kingâs men would never find them.â
You cleared your throat and continued the story.
âYour mother continued to live on the coast, in a small fishing village for many many years and eventually, she grew into a great beauty. Many men tried in vain to marry her but her mother drove them all off. When her mother finally passed from old age, your mother left the village and traveled inward, hoping enough time had passed that the king was no longer looking for her and she was right.â
âThe king and his son had both since passed and a new ruler was on the throne. Your mother traveled the land until she found this region and moved here, settling down in a cave in the mountains. Rumors circulated of a great beauty that lived in the mountains but some of those rumors painted her out to be an enchantress that devoured the souls of men. It was here my mother met her,â you explained, watching Jeonginâs eyes widened but he said nothing, allowing you to continue.
âYour mother and my mother became good friends and then⊠I came along and I can remember how your mother doted on me. She wanted a child of her own but she had no luck in finding a husband. It was when sheâd given up hope of ever having a child that she met your father. I was a young child by then but I still remember the day she came to us, announcing she had found someone,â you said with a smile, remembering back to that day.
âMy mother and father were so thrilled sheâd managed to find someone who loved her. Someone she could start a life with. She wrote to my mother, telling her of the ceremony and the time after. She shared her troubles conceiving with my mother in those letters. And then, she got pregnant. And it lasted,â you said softly, looking up from your hands to find Jeonginâs eyes filled with tears.
âShe gave birth to a healthy baby boy and she named him Jeongin. She wrote how she was so in love and sheâd never known a love like that before. The love of a mother. She loved you so much,â you said softly, giving his hands a gentle squeeze. This pushed him over the edge and a small sob escaped him, the tears finally falling. You pulled him into a tight embrace.
âWhy did she leave?â he whispered into your shoulder. âShe had to,â you explained, gently stroking his hair. âThe people in the village branded her a witch and she feared if she did not leave, they would come for her. So she left you with your father and she went north,â you continued. âIâm sure it was her intention to come back but I donât know much else,â you added.
You continued to stroke his hair, rocking him gently as he sniffled. âSorry I got snot on your shirt,â he said softly. You chuckled, patting his head. âItâs okay,â you replied. âIâve had worse things on my shirt before,â you added as you pushed him back, brushing his hair out of his eyes. âI just needed to tell you because if I didnât, it would eat me alive.â
You pulled him in, pressing a kiss to his forehead. âYou deserved to know the truth about her. She was a remarkable kumiho. I really looked up to her,â you added. Jeongin smiled, reaching up to wipe his eyes. âThank you for telling me,â he said softly. âAnd who knows,â you said suddenly.
âMaybe she left some clues in her journals as to where she went.â Jeongin looked down at the journal and then back up at you.Â
âThen I better get to reading, I guess.â
After the talk, it must not have taken you long to fall asleep because you were woken by the sound of thunder.
Your eyes opened and you noticed that it was mostly dark, save for the fire in the hearth. You peered over your shoulder to find Jeongin had finished his reading and gone to sleep as well. You lay back down, closing your eyes but another clap of thunder sounded and the rain whipping against the side of the rain made you realize what had actually woken you and it wasnât the storm.
It was the way Jeongin shook each time the thunder clapped or the shutters rattled against the windows.
Heâd told you how his home was battered by storms and he wasnât able to keep up with repairs as he wasnât a carpenter like his father. He said heâd grown accustomed to the fear that at any moment, the entire hut would collapse, trapping him inside.
âHeâs probably terrified out of his mind right now,â you told yourself.
You turned over, eyes finding Jeongin curled up in the dark beside you. Sitting up, you reached out and placed a hand on his shoulder. âAre you alright?â you asked softly over the sound of the rain battering against the roof. Jeongin rolled back to look up at you. âSorry,â he said just as softly. âItâs just the stormâŠâ he trailed off.
âI have⊠bad memories.â
Your expression softened as you pulled the covers back and gently grabbed his arm. âCome here,â you whispered, tugging him towards you. Jeongin followed, allowing you to pull him into your space where your arms went around him protectively, his head ducking under your chin and into your chest as he wrapped his arms around you.
You gently stroked his hair, humming softly as you tried to drown out the sounds of the storm. Your humming turned into singing, trying to lull him to sleep. âWhat is that?â he asked, his voice slightly muffled by the cloth of your night shirt. âItâs a song my mother used to sing to me,â you replied, continuing to stroke his hair. âIt sounds familiar,â he continued.
You nodded silently before speaking. âYour mother probably used to sing it to you when you were a babe,â you answered. âMost fox-folk know the song.â
Jeongin fell silent, tightening his hold on you as he nuzzled further into your warm embrace.
âDo you feel better?â you asked softly, smiling when he nodded. âGood,â you whispered, tilting your head to press a kiss to the top of his head. Jeongin pulled back to look up at you. Neither one of you said anything, staring at one another until he finally made the first move, closing the distance and pressing his lips against yours.
Almost as quickly as it happened, he pulled back, stuttering apologies and trying to explain himself. You cut his words off, taking his face in both your hands and pulling back in for another kiss. He relaxed under your touch, lips pressing more firmly against yours as he leaned into the kiss.
âDonât apologize,â you said when you pulled back. âYou have nothing to apologize for.â Jeongin pulled you back in for another kiss, more hurried and rushed this time. You didnât fight it when he pushed onto your back or when he climbed over you, never breaking the kiss as he settled between your parted thighs.
You sighed against his lips, almost moaning when you felt his tongue slip into your mouth. He moved his hands, sliding them up to your cheeks and pulled back, breaking the kiss. âThank you,â he said softly, his eyes looking between yours. âFor what?â you whispered, placing one of your hands atop his.
âFor saving me,â he continued, thumbs stroking your cheeks. âI now know it was you that killed those guys following me.â You stared up at him. âIâve had time to think about it and it makes sense,â he added.
âSo thank you for taking me in and for protecting me.â
You grabbed the front of his shirt, pulling him down into another kiss. âYou donât have to thank me,â you murmured between kisses. âIâm sure you would have done the same in my position,â you added. Jeongin shook his head. âIâm shy and antisocial,â he replied. âI wouldnât have gotten involved.â You pushed him back slightly so you could see his face.
âYouâre not antisocial,â you countered. âYou were tormented and abused. Thereâs a difference.â
Before Jeongin could say anything else, you interrupted with another kiss.
You rolled over, pinning him against the bed as you straddled him, directing his hands to your waist as you continued to kiss him. You felt him tense under you as you rolled your hips, grinding against the growing bulge in his pants. You pulled back to look at him, noticing the look of hesitation on his face.
âWas that too far?â you asked, fearing you may have crossed a line and moved to climb off him but his hold on your waist tightened. âNo,â he croaked. âItâs just thatâŠâ his voice trailed off as he swallowed thickly, trying to find the right words.
âIâve never⊠Iâm aâŠâ he was failing to form a complete sentence but you knew what he was saying.
You cupped his cheek tenderly. âYouâve never done this, have you?â
He shook his head and you smiled warmly, pressing a chaste kiss to his lips. âDo you want to stop?â you asked and watched as he contemplated it. Just when you thought he was going to say yes, he surprised you by shaking his head. âNo,â he finally answered.
âDonât stop.â
You pressed your lips against his, taking the lead. Your hips rolled slowly, grinding against him, eliciting the sweetest moans youâd ever heard come from a man before. âYou sound so sweet,â you whispered, lips brushing against his cheek as you moved to whisper in his ear. âSo innocent,â you continued, kissing down the side of his neck.
Jeongin let out a moan as you nipped at his neck, smiling before pulling back to look down at him. âDo you want me to keep going?â you asked, slowing your movements, enjoying the desperate way Jeongin whined and pulled at your hips, urging you to move.
âY-yes,â he whimpered. âKeep going, please,â he begged. Instead of doing so, you climbed off him, ignoring his protests and pleas as you tore the blankets back. âWhat are you doing?â Jeongin asked as you nestled beside him. âJust trust me,â you said softly, reaching to turn his head towards you, pulling him into a kiss.
With the distraction of your lips against his and your tongue slipping into his mouth, Jeongin didnât notice the way your hand moved down his chest, slowly until he felt your palm against the bulge in his pants. Moaning into your mouth, one of his hands moved to grab yours but you pushed it away.
âAre you going to be a good boy or will I have to restrain you?â you asked darkly. Jeongin let out a little whimper and shook his head. âYou wonât be good?â you asked, cocking your brow. He shook his head again. âIâll be good,â he blurted out and you pulled him back in for another kiss, letting your hand wander again.
This time, he didnât move, only moaning as you started to palm him through his trousers. Considering how hard he already was, it didnât take you long to get him begging and whining for more, his hips bucking up against your hand.
You made quick work of his pants, untying the string and sliding your hand under the waistband, your palm coming into contact with the hot skin of his dick. Jeongin let out a soft whimper as your fingers wrapped around him. âHave you never been touched like this before?â you asked, watching his face as he shook his head.
âNot even by yourself?â you asked, tilting your head. He hesitated before nodding. âIâveâŠâ he swallowed thickly. âIâve touched myself a few times,â he answered. Your smile grew slightly. âDo you want more?â you asked, watching the way his brow furrowed as you stroked him at an even pace.
âP-please,â he murmured, hips bucking into your hand. You removed your hand from his pants, moving and pulling his pants down, throwing them to the floor before climbing over and straddling his hips. Jeongin looked up at you as you leaned over. âDo you want to stop yet?â you whispered, your smirk growing even more when he shook his head.
You toyed with the hem of your night shirt, watching the way his eyes flickered from your face to your hands and back up. Finally, you decided to not tease him any more and lifted the material up over your head, dropping it to the floor and allowing him a moment to adjust to your nakedness.
His eyes were all over your form, taking in every inch of exposed skin. You took his hands and guided him to your waist. âYou can touch me, you know,â you said softly, snapping him out of his trance. âO-okay,â he answered, his voice barely audible over the sounds of the storm.
âWait, I can?â he asked as if just registering what youâd said. You nodded instead of replying verbally and waited patiently as his hands moved of their own accord. His eyes followed the movement of his hands up to your chest, hesitating before cupping both your breasts.
His lips parted in awe as he gave a gentle squeeze.
Heâd never done anything like this before. He had no idea what was allowed and what wasnât or what felt good for you. âIs this okay?â he asked, looking up to meet your gaze. You nodded, reaching one hand up to place over his, pushing his palm against your chest more firmly.
Jeongin groaned at the contact, eyes flickering back down to your chest. Without a word, he sat up, his hand under yours moving aside. You pulled your hand back as he leaned in, glancing up at you for permission which you gave in the form of a nod. His eyes fluttered shut as he took your nipple in his mouth, tongue swirling around the bud.
You let out a sigh, combing your fingers through his hair as his tongue flicked against your skin. You arched your back, pressing your chest into his face as he gently sucked, letting your nipple fall from his mouth before repeating the same process on the other breast, one of his hands moving up to cup your chest. His other hand moved around to your back, hovering just above your ass.
You rolled your hips, brushing your sex against his cock and making him gasp. Your fingers in his hair tugged, tilting his head back to look up at you as you rolled your hips again. âHow does that feel, sweetheart?â you asked softly, cupping his cheek with your free hand.
âSâgood,â he moaned, his hands grabbing your hips, trying to guide your movements but feeling unsure of what he was doing. âYou want me to ride you, little fox?â you whispered, leaning in so your lips brushed against his. He gulped loudly. âY-yes,â he pleaded. âI wanna feel you.â
You took him in a messy kiss, tongue dancing against his. âYou wanna feel me? Feel me from the inside?â He nodded quickly, eyes sliding shut as you rocked your hips, grinding against his cock, coating it with your arousal.
âWanna fill me with your cock?â you purred. Jeongin let out a choked moan as you ground harder against him. âFuck! Y-yes, please!â he whimpered.
You reached down to grab the bottom of his shirt, tugging it off him and letting it fall to the floor as well before placing your hands on his shoulders, pushing him back against the mattress. You allowed your eyes to scan his body, taking in his lean frame as you lifted your hips.
âAre you gonna be a good boy for me?â you asked as you reached between your bodies, taking his cock in your hand and giving him a couple of strokes, coating all of his cock with your slick. He nodded urgently, biting into his bottom lip. âI need to hear you say it, Innie,â you cooed, lining the tip of his cock with your entrance. He nodded again. âYes,â he finally managed to croak out.
âI promise Iâll be good.â
Without another word, you sank down on him, his cock gliding easily as your walls welcomed the intrusion. Jeongin let out a long groan as you enveloped him completely with a sigh. You felt him twitch inside you and you leaned over, placing your hands on the mattress on either side of his head.
âYou promised youâd be good,â you said, meeting his gaze. He nodded, blinking slowly as his hands moved to your thighs. âI promise,â he whispered. âThen you canât cum yet,â you replied, placing a chaste kiss on his lips. âYou have to wait until I say you can cum,â you continued. âCan you do that for me, baby boy?â He nodded again. âYes, I c-can,â he answered.
You slowly raised your hips before sinking back down on him, his cock burying into your cunt. Jeongin moaned against your lips, fingers digging into your skin. âFeels sâgood,â he muttered as you set a slow, steady pace, hips rising and falling, driving his cock repeatedly into your pussy.
âSuch a good boy,â you cooed, leaning over to kiss along his jaw, making him tilt his head, giving you more access to his neck. âLetting me fuck you like you deserve.â Jeongin whined in response, his hands moving up to your waist. âMmore, please,â he begged, gasping when you obliged, your hips bouncing against his. âShit, shit,â he gasped, fingers tightening around your waist.
âWait, mâclose!â he warned. You immediately stilled, his length buried in your walls. You raised your hand to push his bangs back from his forehead, leaning over to press a kiss against his skin. âYouâre doing so well,â you praised as he came down from the edge.
âFilling me so well. Such a good little fox.â
Jeongin whimpered as you rolled your hips. âDo you want me to keep going?â you asked sweetly. He shook his head. âGive me a moment more,â he murmured. You sat up, moving your hands to his chest, sliding them down to his stomach and back up past his shoulders and onto the mattress.
âDo you want me to stay on top of do you wanna take control, little fox?â
His eyes fluttered open, meeting yours. âI can take control?â he asked softly. You nodded. âYou want to try that?â He nodded hesitantly, hissing as his cock slipped out of you.
You pulled him on top as you laid back, your thighs wrapping around his waist. He looked down at you, cheeks burning as he took in your fucked out expression. âGo ahead,â you urged.
Jeongin looked down, eyes widening slightly as they landed on your glistening sex. âItâs okay,â you added, drawing his attention. âTake your time.â Jeongin took himself in his hand, guiding the tip to your slit, watching as the head of his cock slipped past your folds, finding your center easily.
He groaned, watching as your walls sucked him in until his hips met yours. His eyes moved up, meeting yours as he tried to control his breathing. âI donâtâŠâ he trailed off. âJust follow your instincts,â you said gently. He nodded, taking a deep breath before pulling his hips back, watching your face as he snapped forward. You let out a moan, eyes rolling back.
Taking that as his cue to keep going, he repeated the action, quickly setting a steady pace. It was different than when you were in control, he was able to drive his cock deeper into your walls, making you moan louder than when youâd been on top.
âF-feels s-sâgood,â he stammered, his head falling into your chest as he continued to thrust into you. âAh~ fuck, thatâs it, Innie,â you encouraged him. âKeep going.â Following his instincts, like youâd suggested, he cupped his hand against the back of your thigh and pushed your leg against your stomach, sinking his length further inside you with a groan.
âSâ so deep,â you moaned, eyes fluttering shut. Jeongin kept his eyes open, watching to watch your face as he fucked you. Heâd never seen someone so beautiful before. âFaster,â you gasped. Jeongin complied, his thrusts gaining speed. âOh f-fuck,â he groaned. âMâgonna cum.â
You took him by surprise, rolling him onto his back during his momentary lapse in control. Without giving him a chance to regain the upper hand, you took his hands and pinned them against his head. âGonna cum already, little fox? I thought youâd last longer,â you said with a scoff. Jeongin whimpered, his cock twitching as his orgasm impending as you rocked your hips with renewed vigor.
He tried to pull his wrists from your hands but your grip was too strong. âDonât fight me for control,â you said, leaning over to kiss him. âYou gonna cum for me? Canât even wait for me to say you can cum. Pathetic,â you scoffed. Jeongin bucked his hips up to meet yours.
âPlease,â he begged. âLet me cum.â You shook your head. âOnly good boys get to cum,â you retorted. âYou havenât been good.â Jeongin shook his head. âI have been good!â he argued, moaning at the end of his protest. âIâve been good,â he repeated.
âPlease let me cum, Y/N.â
You chuckled, slowing your movements, holding his wrists tighter when he protested.
âSuch a greedy little slut. Wanting to cum first,â you snapped, rolling your hips. âF-fuck Y/N, mâgonna cum. Shit, shit, shit,â Jeongin whined, hips bucking up as his orgasm washed over him. You slowed your hips as his cock twitched, Jeongin releasing inside you with a whine.
You sighed, your hips coming to a stop as you looked down at him. âCouldnât even wait for me to finish with you,â you said softly. Jeongin opened his eyes. âS-sorry,â he stammered. âI tried to stop but it just felt so good.â Your lips twitched into a smirk. âItâs okay,â you replied, releasing one of his wrists to cup his cheek. âBut now youâre gonna have to lie there and let me finish,â you continued.
Jeongin looked up at you, leaning into your touch. âThatâs okay,â he replied, letting out a gasp as you rolled your hips, his cock still lodged inside you. âYouâre in for a long night, little fox,â you said softly, taking his wrist and pinning it again before sliding your hands to lace your fingers with his as you continued to rock your hips, feeling him slowly start to get hard again.
âA really long night.â
Jeongin awoke the next morning to the smell of meat and opened his eyes slowly, blinking away the sleep and allowing his eyes to adjust to the sunlight that filtered into the cottage.
He rolled over, peering at you by the fire, cooking breakfast. He stretched his arms, whining at the soreness in his muscles. You chuckled as he pushed himself up, realizing he was shirtless. You, on the other hand, were fully dressed. âWhat happened last night?â he asked, reaching up to scratch his head.
You glanced over your shoulder. âDonât tell me youâve already forgotten,â you said as you plated breakfast and walked over to the bed. Jeongin felt heat rise in his cheeks. âNo,â he answered as you sat on the edge of the bed, presenting him with a plate. âI just forgot how many times,â he murmured, adding a thanks at the end.
You chuckled as you dug into your own food. âMore than a few,â you answered. Jeongin looked up and then out the window. âHow late is it?â he asked. You shook your head. âNot that late, Itâs not even noon,â you replied. The two of you ate in silence, Jeongin thanking you again as you took his dirty plate.
âWhere are my clothes?â he asked, noticing they were not on the floor where youâd left them the night before. âI washed them first thing this morning,â you answered. âTheyâre probably dry by now,â you added and headed out the door to retrieve them.
Upon entering, you handed the clean clothes to Jeongin who dressed himself in silence. âWhat do you plan to do?â you asked softly as you stoked the fire. Jeongin looked up and then down at his hands. âIâm not sure,â he answered. âIâd like to go find my mother,â he added.
You turned to look at him, a warm smile on your face. He got up and walked over to where you stood, his hands resting on your waist and pulling you closer. âBut part of me wants to stay here with you.â You smiled, eyes shutting as he leaned his forehead against yours. âStay here and maybe build a life with you.â Your heart swelled at the thought but it was quickly deflated by another thought.
âI think you should follow your heart,â you finally said, pulling back to press a kiss to his forehead and turn away. Jeongin opened his eyes and sighed. He looked around the cottage and then at his bags on the floor near the table where he could see one of his motherâs journals peeking out at him.
His mind was made up for him.
âIâm sorry,â he said softly, pressing his lips against your shoulder. âItâs okay,â you reassured him. âDo what you have to do,â you added. Jeongin turned you to face him, reaching up to cup your cheek. âI will come back,â he said softly, eyes flickering between yours. âI promise.â
With his rucksack packed full of supplies you could spare and a map in hand, you pointed him in the right direction. Jeongin pulled you in for one last kiss, resting his forehead against yours for a few moments after. âI mean it,â he said, pulling back to look at you. âI will come back. Regardless if I find her or not.â You nodded, smiling and keeping the sad feeling lingering in your stomach at bay.
âBe careful,â you said, giving his hand a squeeze. Jeongin pulled away and started through the forest in the direction youâd pointed him. The last place youâd heard his mother had been spotted. North towards Mongol territory. As he reached the edge of your property, he turned to look back at you.
He raised his hand, waving which you returned and watched as he turned back and slowly disappeared from sight. With a sigh, you continued to stare after him. âYou better come back,â you whispered to yourself, moving your hand to rest against your stomach.
Smiling to yourself you turned away and headed back into the cottage to tend to your chores, hoping Jeongin found what he was looking for sooner rather than later.
He only had nine months after all.

The foxes and something random they need for comedy
Andrew: noise canceling headphones (annoys the hell out of wymack because heâll be talking to andrew, assuming the music is off, and Andrew will hit pause and go âwhat?â)
Kevin: wii sports with exy on it (heâs constantly playing exy, even if heâs in the dorm)
Neil: trampoline (heâd love it, come on) (itâs like one of those tiny indoor ones and it annoys Andrew because neil will literally jump as theyâre having a conversation) (our boy needs constant movement)
Aaron: a giant skeleton (a gag gift from andrew) (itâs prominent in his Nickyâs and Mattâs dorm) (they decorate it for every holiday) (on April fools he dresses it in a bikini and puts it in Andrewâs bed, with a note even this is hotter than neil) (andrew Neil and Kevin hold it hostage for weeks until Aaronâs group comes begging for it)
Nicky: a nerf gun (he terrorizes everyone with it) (however, he was not prepared when aaron and andrew come back from Walmart one day with two of their own) (they get nerf guns banned from Fox tower)
Dan: an airhorn (she uses it to get the foxes attention during practice) (she gets wymack one for his birthday)
Matt: vr headset (he loves it so much) (heâs constantly bumping into things around the dorm) (aaron and nicky are just annoyed but can ignore it, until Matt trips and falls on aaron, then they hide out in Andrewâs dorm)
Allison: crystals (sheâs a witch tell me im wrong) (she puts them everywhereâReneeâs pockets, all over the dorm and the locker room, she gives one to neil, who puts it in Andrewâs car) (andrew likes it) (she and andrew go crystal shopping together) (also you canât tell me andrew doesnât like rocks thatâs just something i see him enjoying. He doesnât necessarily believe that they do anything, but if they do whatâs the harm) (anyway, they bond and it makes Renee happy)
Renee: a bicycle (she rides it everywhere) (the girls get a little basket for it)
Those last two were more sweet than funny but still

4:30am | happy birthday, dumbass
pairing : bakugo katsuki x f!reader
tags :Â fluff, childhood friends to lovers, college!au, extremely self indulgent
tw :Â alcohol usage (legal)
wc :Â 4452 words
once a year, every year, katsuki breaks his nightly routine of heading to bed at 8pm sharp in favour of sitting and waiting for the clock to countdown to midnight. the boy is dressed and out of the door by 11:45pm.Â
glancing down at his phone to check the time, a warm breath escapes his lips as he comes to a stop, staring up at your bedroom window as he quietly opens the gate and heads for the front door. he doesn't knock, there's no need. the door swings open just as he shuts off his phone that reads 11:59pm, and he's met with your grinning face.Â
"happy birthday, dumbass." bakugou grumbles, tearing his eyes up off the groud to take in the way the moon delicately shines upon your features. your eyes form crescents and you laugh softly, impatiently ushering the male inside before the chilly night air has another chance to bite at his flushed cheeks.
inside, you'd already prepared your living room for the 'ultimate movie nightâ as you liked to put it. the couch was practically engulfed by a mountain of pillows and plushies, topped off with blankets thrown atop haphazardly. "i canât believe your dumb ass is 16." katsuki scoffs as he makes himself comfortable, throwing a handful of popcorn into his mouth. âthis is for you, or whatever.â he shoves something soft and orange into your hands, eyes avoiding yours.
an orange fox stares up at you with beady little eyes, and you immediately recognised itâs lopsided little face. âkatsuki! did you go back for him!?â you question with excitement, plopping down besides your friend and cooing over your gift. you had stopped by an arcade a few days ago with bakugou, and spent almost half your allowance on desperately trying (and failing) to win the toy, whining miserably on the walk back home.Â
âtch, no. i just had some free time yesterday. it was easy peasy.â the blonde boasts with a cocky grin to match his tone. heâd in fact demanded some extra money off his old man, and went back there on a mission to bring home the ugly thing. ânow are we gonna watch this stupid lion movie or what?â
your arms fling around him for a quick thank you hug that leaves his cheeks warm and ears red, before readying yourself for what would probably be the hundredth viewing of your favourite movieâthe lion king. bakugou had recently admitted to never seeing it before, much to your horror, and you'd finally managed to get him to cave for your birthday.Â
the two of you settle into a comfortable silence as the movie begins, thatâs only disturbed with bakugouâs snarky commentary. luckily, he eventually begins to fall quieter and quieter as his eyelids grow heavier and heavier. it was way after his bedtime after all. about halfway through the film, the sounds of his even breathing signifies that he's knocked out cold. stifling your laughter as you gently reach to shut off the tv, you let out a small yawn before relaxing into your side of the couch with your new plushie and falling into a peaceful sleep.Â
the next morning your mother discovers the two of you just as she'd expected to, a fond smile on her face as she snaps a picture of the troublesome duo to send to mitsuki. the two mothers gush over how cute their babies are and joke about how theyâd wish you guys were as quiet together as when you were both asleep.Â

^â¢ï»â¢^àž
there is a calm stillness that has settled over your household as your parents had long gone off to bed, but quiet sniffles break the silence as you furiously rubbed at your misty eyes, an aura of misery shrouding your frame as you gave yourself a once over in your bathroom mirror. you were moments away from turning 18 yet you looked a mess.Â
youâd thought you were handling your breakup rather well, but unfortunately the late night spiralling thoughts intertwined with feelings of both anger and hurt eventually brought you to tears. a gentle knock at the door notified you of someone's presence, and you were soon met with a familiar face.Â
concern adorned bakugou's expression, his brows furrowing as his chest tightened with a quiet rage. "happy birthday, dumbass." the soft tone of his voice betraying his intentionally agitating words, leaving them devoid of any hints of playful malice. heavy arms envelop you in a comforting embrace, and the dam you'd just managed to clumsily build in your eyes breaks in an instant, and tears began flowing once more. âi donât know why iâm crying.â you admit with a huff, shaking your head in annoyance.Â
if he wasn't so preoccupied with being here with you right now, bakugou's almost certain he'd be heading towards that asshole's house, prepared to give the beat down of a lifetime. "he's a fucking asshole. i'll kill him." the blonde sneers mostly to himself, earning a breathy chuckle from you in response. "i'm almost tempted to let you." you respond dryly, looking up at him through wet lashes.Â
"let me?" he frowns. "the fuck do i need your permission for?" red eyes squinting at you with a grumble, releasing you from his hold. you roll your eyes in response, wiping your wet eyes with the sleeves of your hoodie. âokay, iâm done.â you announce, straightening your posture. âiâm not wasting anymore tears on that asshole, good fucking riddance!â. katsuki grins proudly, your resolve is admirable. he never understood what you saw in that loser anyway, you were way out of his league. Â
âthats my girl.â the blond pats your head roughly, making his way out of your bathroom with you in tow. âdo you wanna, uh.. watch one of your stupid chick flicks or something?â his hand rubs at his neck, awkwardly shifting his weight from one foot to the other and you laugh.Â
âyou can just say you enjoyed mean girls the other day âtsuki.â mischievous glint in your eyes as you look up at him with a teasing grin, and the sight of you finally smiling again was all heâd ever wanted.Â
âi fucking didnât!âÂ

^â¢ï»â¢^àž
âhey yn, what are you thinking of doing for your birthday?â the pink haired girl asks curiously, immediately catching the attention of the other girl sitting besides you. âyeah! twenty one is a milestone, we should do something super fun!â ochako chimes in agreement, plopping her pen down onto her notebook. âhow about a girls night out?â she suggests.
âah, iâm not sure yet guys.â you laugh with a shrug. you had never really done anything big for your birthday before honestly, you were happy to just spend time with the people you cared about. no one asides from your parents were aware of your little yearly ritual with a certain hothead, and youâd gotten so used to spending the first few hours of every birthday with him that you never even thought about itâit had become second nature to the both of you. your friends chatter animatedly as they discuss potential party plans, unbeknownst to your wandering thoughts.Â
things were slightly different this year, youâd met both mina and ochako at the start of the year and the three of you quickly became an inseparable trio. you wondered if bakugou would be willing to attend any of the ridiculous plans the two girls were discussing.
âi donât know guys, clubbing isnât really my scene.â you chuckle, imagining loud booming techno music and a sea of sweaty bodies. âwell, we could always just throw a house party instead? that way there wouldnât be a bunch of strangers and we have complete control over the music!â mina, the infamous party girl suggests as she clasps her hands together eagerly.
âitâs only if youâre down though, obviously.â she adds.
âyeah, definitely! weâre happy to do whatever it is you want, itâs your day!â ochako reassures with a warm smile, putting down her pen on the journal she was just doodling in. youâd never really thrown a party before, but there was a first time for everything, no?Â
âokay. but you guys really have to help me, i have no idea what to do.â you give in, excitement growing at the possible new experience. âyes!â âof course!â the two girls cheer, immediately chattering up a storm about the millions of potential plans.Â
it had been just over two weeks now since youâd established your birthday party plans with your girlfriends, and surprisingly, quite a lot had been organised since. your parents agreed to go out with mitsuki and masaru and for the night, having their own little old people party before spending the night at their place.Â
youâd promised that you would only allow your closest friends to spend the night, and that you wouldnât let things get too out of hand. katsuki had also put your parents at ease, promising to keep an eye on things and handling it if anything got out of hand.Â
and before you knew it, everything had fallen into place. all that was left to do was to actually host the damn thing, which you were admittedly feeling quite nervous about. youâd never really had all that many friends before, real, close friends that is.Â
being lumped together with bakugou katsuki for as long as you could remember was both a blessing and curse, and so youâd never really felt the need to venture out on your own socially speaking. you were mostly cordial and friendly with peers at school, but it was thanks to mina and ochako and their vast social circle that you actually begun really talking to new people.Â
you would be in for a rude awakening if those same new people didnât actually consider you a friend the same way you do them, and youâd hate for the girls efforts to go to waste.
âoi, did you come over just to stare at my wall? if so, youâve got plenty of your own at home.â katsuki breaks you out of your trance, sending a sudden flick to your forehead that leaves behind a stinging sensation.Â
âwhy are you always so damn violent! youâre never going to get a girlfriend this way!â rubbing at your head with a whine, you childishly scribble in the top hand corner of his pristine page of notes as petty revenge.Â
âFUCK OFF, NOW I HAVE TO REWRITE EVERYTHING!â thereâs a deep exhale from bakugouâs lips and the annoyance fades from his expression, he looks over at you sitting across him at the dinner table. âyouâre going to be fine. stop overthinking about your damn party when it hasnât even happened yet.â
startled that heâd actually managed to pick up on your damp mood, your brows knit together as you feign ignorance, âiâm not overthinking it, i donât know what youâre talking about.â katsuki raises a brow, so unconvinced that itâs almost laughable but you stubbornly avoid making eye contact.
âitâll be fine cus iâll be there.â the sentence falls from his mouth so effortlessly, a guaranteed reassurance that no matter what goes down heâll be right there with youâas he always has been. sure, he may not understand your worry wart tendencies, but whether katsuki realises it or not, his strong sense of unwavering reliability leaves you with a small smile as you both return to peacefully studying. or, mostly peaceful studying.Â
â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â àž
^â¢ï»â¢^àž
âare you sure my ass isnât hanging out guys?â mina whines exasperatedly, neck craning round to see her back side in the mirror in front of her. âyou look hot mina, stop fussing!â ochako chides, shifting her attention away from her phone for a moment. âizukuâs gonna be here soon.â she beams with adoration, liking the text heâd just sent.Â
âcareful, if you look anymore excited he might mistake you for a lovesick schoolgirl.â the other teases, playfully tugging at ochakoâs cheeks. you roll your eyes with a smile, amused by their antics and smooth out the pleats in your skirt, giving yourself a final once over before turning to seek your friendâs approval.Â
youâd thought that you looked fineâcute even, but the sudden silence causes a bundle of nerves to begin forming in the pit of your stomach. maybe your eyeliner wasnât even? or your hair was ugly? or maybe, the outfit youâd bought was actually really hideous and you should just call off the entire thing because no oneâs going to want to come anyway and youâd really just be embarrassing yourself?
a sharp squeal pierces through your spiralling, and you see a blur of pink hair before mina is bouncing up and down in front of you clapping her hands together with glee, and you take this means she does approve. ochako has now joined along side you two, minus the squealing, and the three of you huddle around your floor length mirror, for few cute photos together before youâre all eventually shitfaced.Â
âweâre so cute! i love you guys! happy birthday yn! LETâS PARTY!â mina gushes, barely allowing herself to catch her breath in between sentences as she pulls the both of you in for a group hug. âyou,â she suddenly juts her finger at your chest âlittle miss birthday girl, you have to let loose and have fun tonight. no responsibilities, capiche?â
âyou do realise her actual birthday is tomorrow right?â uraraka giggles, and you hear someone knock thrice before a green mop of hair pokes his head in, izuku offers a small wave before informing you of the crowd that is now gathering downstairs.Â
it was hard to believe that this was actually your house, with the walls all dressed up with balloons and various cute party decor littering almost every surface. the strobing lights and thumping music perfectly emulated the vibe of a club, and with how busy it was starting to get you almost couldnât tell the difference. you have got to get a thank you gift for the girls after this.
âwhatâre you staring off into space for ya dunce.â the ever so recognisable gruff voice comes from behind, the sudden proximity sending a chill down your spine. spinning on your feet, youâre met with katsukiâs stoic expression, and you allow yourself a mere moment to glance over his appearance for the occasion.Â
a loose white button-up drapes over his large frame, with a few top buttons popped open just enough that his toned pecs daringly peek through. itâs paired with one of his nicer black leather jackets, youâd never admit it to his face but it was always one of your favourites. it was practically made for him. heâd also opted for simple pair of darker blue jeans, not too formal but nice enough that you can tell he put a bit more thought into his outfit, rather than his usual t-shirt and sweats.Â
âtake a picture loser, itâll last longer.â your cheeks flush, and you tear your eyes away from him immediately, now having a staring contest with the brown hardwood floors instead.Â
âshut up. iâm just so used to you looking like a bum i was caught by surprise.â embarrassed that you were caught ogling your own best friend you grumble out a snarky response, praying that he lets this go on account of it being your (almost) birthday.Â
âso you admit it.â
âwhat?â
âyou think i look nice.â heâs smirking, cocking a brow and feeling so damn smug you could practically taste it and you refuse to stroke his inflated ego any further. opting to cross your arms and huff, akin to a petulant child as you grind your teeth with a scowl. you canât lie to him and disagree, but youâd rather die than give in and admit that heâs right.Â
âyou look pretty.â katsukiâs tone is completely different, lacking any pompousness, and if you looked closely enough you would notice that the tips of his ears now burn a bright shade of red that rival his eyes. for the second time that night heâs caught you off guard completely. before you can stammer out a response, a loud red head stumbles into the room and throws a heavy arm around the both of you.Â
âhappy birthday yn! this is some bash!â eijiro beams, tugging the two of you in for a three way hug before katsuki can wrestle him off. âwoah, bro! you look so manly!â it was clear heâd had a few drinks before this encounter, and you chuckle at the obvious irritation painted across bakugoâs face.
you internally thank kirishima for interrupting the strange tension that had unknowingly begun to creep up on you and bakugo, and with an exhale of relief youâre filled with giddiness to match kiriâs tipsy state.Â
âwill you do shots with me eijiro?â heâs still got his arm slung over you, not that youâre complaining of course, comfortable enough in your relationship with him to know that thereâs nothing between you two but platonic affection.Â
âanything for my birthday girl!â the red head cheers, leading you to the kitchen with bakugou trailing behind begrudgingly. katsuki knows better than to get jealous over kirishima, hell, other than you he probably considers him his closest friend. but that doesnât ease the tight burning sensation that he feels in his chest upon hearing eijiroâs words. whoâs birthday girl?
hours had gone by and at this point you were now teetering dangerously on the line of tipsy, and just flat out drunk. kiri and mina were currently having a dance off in the middle of the dance floor, with a crowd hollering so loud you would be worried about a noise complaint if you werenât so out of it yourself.Â
you were cheering and laughing uncontrollably, most of the control over your senses had disappeared with the last straight vodka shot youâd downed at your friendâs behest. it was your birthday! you needed to let loose so whatâs a shot or two, or three? to be quite frank you had stopped keeping track of your drinks after the consecutive beer pong losses.Â
partying this hard was fairly uncommon for you, only feeling safe enough to let your guard down due to the fact that you were in the comfort of your own home, and thankfully katsuki had been glued to your side all night (to no oneâs surprise). he had even shouldered some (most) of the penalties from the games as a result of your piss poor aim.Â
âhey, idiot. you need to drink more water, come with me.â katsuki appeared to be almost stone cold sober, but even he was not immune to copious amounts of alcohol coursing through his system. for some strange reason he had been feeling more.. irritable? for lack of better of word.
all night, any potentially wandering hands or even mere glances in your direction that lasted just a bit too long for his liking had been peeving him for the past hour or so. kaminari had even teasingly called him a guard dog a little earlier much to his misfortune, earning the guy some very colourful language and a punch to the gut.Â
you let out a whine, but compliantly allow him to lead you off the makeshift dance floor without further protest. his hand swallowed yours, enveloping your entire palm with zero difficulty which left you wondering just when heâd gotten so much larger than you. his sheer height and size caused the sea of people to simply peel apart, allowing the two of you an easy exit route.Â
lost in your thoughts, youâre brought back to reality when youâve plopped down onto something soft, the familiarity of the walls makes you realise heâd brought you upstairs to your room. bakugou knew the layout of your home like the back of his hand, a privilege borne from the countless days of his childhood spent within these very walls, with you attached to his hip.Â
âdrink.â the blonde commands, and you oblige, the cool water flowing down your throat offers your body some reprise from the hard liquor, and youâre left feeling surprisingly refreshed. once he was content with how much you drank, bakugou took the glass from your hands and placed it on your nightstand, besides the picture frame of the two of you as kids, sporting toothy grins and peace signs.Â
thereâs quiet shuffling as he settles down besides your bed on the carpeted floors, a comfortable silence falling over the two young adults to the soundtrack of a far away thumping. you hum absentmindedly, glancing over at your clock that read 11:59pm and then down at katsuki who was already looking up at you.Â
he rarely got to see you like this nowadays, the height disparity between the two of you growing so vast over time that he almost exclusively looks down at you now. but as of this moment, a small part of him wishes that he hadnât grown so tall, if only for the chance to look up at you the way he was currently.Â
the moonlight shone through your thinly veiled blinds, he knew from a young age that you were always her favourite, he knew from the moment he saw how she cupped your face in her rays ever so delicately, shining over your soft features and painting you in such a romantic light it was practically unfair. katsuki bakugou had come to the realisation that he had never once stood a chance.Â
âhappy birthday, dumbass.â his usual commanding tone was soft, demure almost, as if he were trying to coax a small animal out of hiding. there was no one else but the two of you here in your bedroom right now, same as it had always been for all your lives, but this time, something else was there.
it was the poorly concealed tension that you both so carefully avoided, stuck in a constant loop of dancing around a topic that neither dared to breath a word of, in fear of speaking it into existence. your mind suddenly felt as clear as it had ever been, and you were consumed with a need to lean into him, just as youâve always done, except this time around you fear that simply laying your head on his broad shoulders wonât be enough.Â
bakugou clears his throat, breaking his trance as he digs around in the pocket of his pants. âitâs for you. or whatever.â he mumbles, offering his enclosed fist up to you whilst vehemently avoiding eye contact. he had never shown that much interest in your walls before and you had half a mind to repeat the sarcastic phrase heâd offered you just a few days prior.
you stick out your palm inquisitively, and a second later thereâs a dainty silver chain resting in the previously unoccupied space. a soft gasp falls from your lips as you carefully pick up the necklace, thumbing over the small heart pendant.Â
ââtsuki, itâs, itâs so pretty.â you smile fondly, eyes flickering over to katsuki who is feeling uncharacteristically shy, despite telling himself it was just a stupid birthday present. it was normal for someone to give gifts for a birthday, so why did this feel so stupidly intimate?
âthought itâd look good on you. i dunno. i donât know that stupid girly stuff so, if you want to exchange it for something else you can, i donât care, i just-â
âsince itâs my birthday now, can i ask for my birthday wish?âÂ
âhah? donât you always say you canât tell me cus it wonât come true or some shit? plus thereâs not even a candle to blow out so it doesnât even make any sense.â you interrupt his incessant rambling by sliding down off your bed, clumsily settling besides him on the plush floor and gazing up at him with an unfamiliar glint in your eyes.
regrets and worries be damned, this tension had already begun to swallow you whole and with just enough liquid courage, you feel as if you could possibly take charge of it for once. your judgement may be clouded but your desire was not, you knew exactly what you wanted as of this moment, clear as the current night sky.Â
âcan you kiss me?âÂ
â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â àž
^â¢ï»â¢^àž
a sweet caramel scent drifts around your kitchen, your favourite candle that youâd burnt earlier had already blanketed the apartment with a fragrant haze thatâs begun blending in with the aromatics coming from the sizzling pan.Â
a long forgotten movie is playing in the background, providing white noise as you lean your head into your palms resting atop the kitchen island. the sizzling and crackling groans of the pan had almost put you intro a trance, as you admired the tall blonde figure seamlessly handling the kitchenware with expertise.
âah.â a pair of chopsticks deposit a juicy and succulent slice of wagyu into your eagerly awaiting mouth, the perfectly prepared meat melting between your chewing as you writhe in your seat with joy.Â
âmm, thatâs so good âtsuki! can i have another piece?â you open your mouth expectantly, eyes twinkling as you savour the taste left over on your tongue. the male doesnât oblige however, instead bringing down two plates from the cupboard above.Â
âno, idiot. iâm done now anyway, just let me finish plating it and go sit at the dinner table. your staring is creepy.â your face scrunches at his denial, yet you slide off the stool and settle down at meticulously set dinner table.Â
a freshly purchased bouquet of your favourite flowers acts as the centrepiece, accompanied by a few lit candles and two carefully folded napkins besides matching silverware. your heart swells with joy as you take in all the minute details that were all so thoughtfully prepared, before katsuki sets down both plates of food.
he finally joins you over at the table, placing a chaste kiss to the top of your head before sitting down as well. it was definitely a late dinner, your eyes flickering over to the living room clock now reading 11:59pm while he cuts your food into bite sizes.
you absentmindedly twirl the dainty heart chain on your necklace, before katsuki draws your attention by gently cupping your cheek with his hand and softly stroking with his thumb, as if you were a doll made of porcelain. you never fail to take his breath away, he thinks to himself.Â
âhappy birthday, dumbass. i love you.â he grins adoringly, reduced to nothing but a love struck man who will forever be captivated by just how beautifully you reflect the moonâs light.

Hello hello! Congrats on your 650 followers! I saw you had requests open so here I come bc I love how your mind thinks ð
Commander Fox, Regency AU (or similar to Bridgeton kinda vibes)
But a more will they/wont they type of thing (Happy ending tho, maybe bit of angst??) but similar to Bridgerton where they have âthe seasonâ or the courting season.
I just feel that foxy boy had great Duke Hastings vibes and Iâd love to see how you run with this idea!
Our Unending Dream
Summary: You like to think youâre a little more reasonable than some (most) of your peers. Youâve never been one for flights of fancy or prone to the vapors. People donât get under your skin because you donât allow them to. With one, very notable, exception.
Pairing: Commander Fox x F!Reader
Word Count: 977
Prompt: Regency Era
Warnings: None
Tagging: @bad4amficideas @justiceandwar98 @Mira-Loves-Star-Wars @tiredbi-peach @dukeoftheblackstar
@trixie2023 @Kimiheartblade @padawancat97 @falconfeather23435 @etod
@bb8-99 @kiss-anon @continous-mistakes
A/N: So, full disclosure, I've never watched Bridgerton so I was kind of making it up as I go. In any event, I hope you like it! It's also shorter than the other, and I'm sorry for that.

When your aunt informed you that she was throwing a Salon for you and your cousin, you thought it would be for your cousinâs birthday celebration. A young lady doesnât turn 21 every day, after all.
And stars know that your poor cousin deserves to have people paying attention to her, at least for one day.
It was, as it happens, a rather foolish assumption.
âI think Mother is trying to kill me,â Your cousin whispers to you an hour after the Salon starts and sheâs able to extract herself from the group of well-wishers who have been hovering around her since the party started.
âI think sheâs trying to marry you off.â You counter as you take a sip of your fruity drink, âOr have you not noticed that all of your shadows are noble men?â
She shoots you a look, âThis Salon is for both of us. Why donât you have any suitors?â
âOh, havenât you heard? Iâm unmarryable.â
âAccording to whom!?â Your cousin demands, offended on your behalf.
âMyself.â
She shoots you another look, âSome day, cousin of mine, youâre going to fall in love with a man and Iâm going to laugh myself sick.â
âWell, then. In deference to your health, I shall simply have to join a convent.â
She elbows you roughly, âDarling, you canât drink wine at a convent.â
âThe things I do for family,â You muse dramatically.
She laughs, which has the misfortune of drawing the attention of her suitors once more, and she hides her sour face behind her fan, âBack to the trenches I go.â She says with a sigh before she sweeps away, her voluminous pink dress swirling around her feet.
You smother your laughter with ease and lift your wine glass back to your lips to take another sip. If nothing else, watching your cousin try and fend off her suitors will be amusing.
Itâs not as if anyone is interested in you, after all.
Though, despite what you said to your cousin, there is one man who you wouldnât mind paying attention to you. Tragically, heâs both not here and is not an acceptable partner for youâŠaccording to your Father and his wife.
Tragic.
Heartbreaking, even.
You glance away from your cousin as someone comes to a stop near you, and a flash of red and white catches your attention. A very specific pattern of red and white.
Marshal Commander Fox is standing next to you, still dressed in his armor, with a small grin playing on his handsome face.Â
âCommander! I wasnât aware that you had been invited,â You say as you focus your attention on him.
âI was not.â He admits with a shrug, âTechnically, Iâm crashing the party.â
âShame on you.â
âYes, yes. Iâm an awful man, I know.â His small grin grows wider at his words, âWhat can I say, all of the lovely ladies dressed in their finest? I simply had to see for myself.â
You shoot him a slightly amused look, âFunny.â
âIâm being serious.â
âI might believe you if you were looking at anyone else.â
He laughs, âWell, you are the loveliest lady here.â Fox replies with a flirty grin.
âThank you,â
âI mean it.â
âI know you do. You always do.â
Fox releases a sigh, âYouâre turning me down again, arenât you?â
âI wouldnât want you to run afoul of my father.â You remind him, âHe could ruin you.â And thatâs the problem, isnât it? No matter how much you like Fox, no matter how much you might love him, your Father would ruin him.
And you canât let that happen.
A heavy sigh falls from his lips, and you chance a glance at his face. He looks unhappy, and your heart clenches painfully. You put that look on his face. This is your fault.
Foxâs gaze locks with yours, and a slow smile crosses his face, âRun away with me.â
â...I beg your pardon?â
âMy whole unit is being transferred, weâre moving to the other side of the country. Come with me.â Gently, he takes your free hand and lightly runs his calloused fingers across the palm of your hand, making you shiver.Â
âFoxââ
âI canât give you the life you grew up with,â He interrupts, âThereâs no glitz or glamour. You wonât be able to throw these types of garden parties, and youâll probably have to get a job.â Fox lists, âItâs not going to be easy, even I know that. But no real relationship is.â
You open your mouth to say something, but he continues in a rush, as if afraid of what you might say before he can make his full argument.
âAnd I know you, beautiful. Youâve always hated this kind of stuff. You hate the frilly dresses, the complicated hair-dos, and the jewelry that costs as much as a house.â Fox speaks quickly, his gaze searching your face, âYou always complain about how bored you are, how shallow your peers are, how you canât talk to anyone because all they want to talk about are their social livesââ
âFox,â You interrupt him buy reaching up and pressing a finger against his lips.
He trails off and looks down at you. A look os anxious anticipation on his face.
You favor him with a soft smile, âDo you think I could get hired at the local library?â
Fox looks surprised for a moment, âWaitâŠdoes that meanâ?â
âNothing would make me happier than to go with you,â You whisper to him.
He squeezes your hand, âThen weâd better run before your parents catch us,â Fox replies with a wide grin, âThorn is already ordained, and Thire promised to be our witness.âAnd you giggle as you allow him to sneak you out of the party. Your life is going to be harder now, you know. But itâs worth it. He is worth it.

full moon, white honey
pairing: elain archeron x lucien vanserra. honourable mentions to feysand, nessian and one barely there hint at emerie/nesta. it's tasteful, i promise. rating: e (for eventually they get it on) wc: 11k primary tags: witcher!au, hurt/comfort, major character injury, non-chronological, ambiguous/open ending, sex on furniture - more detailed tags, see ao3! read on ao3
The worn parchment that had once held a recipe lay untouched in her quarters. She no longer needed it. Celandine, White Myrtle, Brain of a Drowner. Crush, Boil with Spirit, Bottle once cooled. Thirteen words seared into her bones. For the Witcher who too often showed her his.
a/n: happy birthday to me (well, i'm posting this early because i'm impatient, but the point still stands) i even made a little mood board/title card thing! this is all very exciting.
this fic is told entirely out of order (intentionally so. what is the intention? who knows. vibes, i guess.) and there's a detailed breakdown on ao3 on exactly what i pilfered from the witcher universe in order to write this so pls see there if you need a breakdown!
(very) small snip under the cut!
Fox cub at the foot of a golden throne, restless and wanting. Blood of the lion. And the lion was not a lion but a wolf; each paw print against the marble floor burst to flame. And the palace was burning, falling. And the cub stepped into the wolfâs jaws, bared its throat in submission, but there was no one to save him. Claws across flesh time and time again until all he had was red. And the fox was not a fox but a boy; atop Novigrad rooftops, launching from parapet to ridge at the first sunrise, the last sunrise. Bloodshot eye and black stained lips.Â
Swords and signs. Horseback to haybale. Tavern, village, city â but no home.Â
Blindfolded on a tightrope a hundred feet above the waking streets, nought but the swell of the wind and the call of birds, his audience. He slipped, and the ground rushed up to meet him.
//
âVanserra is calling for you.âÂ
âHe does not know me. He calls for any woman with a pulse.âÂ
âAnd yet heâs turned away all companions, refuted all offers of comfort, he barely rises above amicable chat with the others that dare approach him, but he calls for you.â
Elain huffed a fickle laugh at Marenâs observations. Of course sheâd noted these things â probably weaned the information from any of the other healers, priestesses or patrons of the temple. The walls breathed secrets in The Motherâs temple, only half of them true. Elain saw the other half in her dreams.Â
âWhat are you saying, Maren? That he favours me? As if I donât know. I see it and I ignore it, as you all should. It is no business but his own.â She hauled close the tome sheâd been scouring â a translated elven text on elder blood in horticulture â keen to end this interrogation. Not the first and definitely not the last. The Witcher might not have made a habit of getting injured in Temeria intentionally, but when he did, he always ended up here. Halfway dead, but still very much alive.Â
âIt makes him easy to care for. Each time I tend to his scratches, I learn a little more about just what his mutations have cost him and how little our healing aids him. His own concoctions knit his bones, quell his bleeding, but turn his blood to poison. I donât know about you, Maren, but that terrifies me.â
It wasnât just that which terrified her.
Maren held her tongue, probably for the first time in her life.Â
âA monster visits our temple and calls for me by name and you would give me to him thinking not of my wellbeing, but of the scandal it would cause if rumour spread that I was fucking him.â
âThat is notââ
âI will take my leave,â Finality crisp in her words. âBut not for your worry. I have enough celandine and white myrtle to craft his potions. I trust he will have the rest.âÂ
Maren bobbed her head, a curt dismissal. To be honest, Elain was surprised she didnât argue. The wine of her cheeks seemed to flush with an unchecked fury. But Elain was not one of her charges, not a priestess in the temple. She tended their gardens, helped in their kitchens, brewed their potions, but sheâd been granted asylum above all else. The temple kept her from the clutches of ruthless kings, power starved elves, ambitious men. Any that would bind her powers for their own ill will.Â
A Seer. What a rare and wonderful thing.
What a cursed blessing.Â
And she was angry. Not at Maren, or the healers and priestesses, mothers and refugees that found home in their temple. She was angry at Lucien Vanserra. Because no matter the consequences, he always came back.Â
Her footfalls through the stone corridors, an omen

Birthday Login Message: Hiya, flower~ Yes, you, seein' anyone else here? Wanna come to my birthday party later? I mean, it's not the party I would throw if it were up to me, Riddle wouldn't allow that, but it's still gonna be fun, I promise! Scout's word and all that! So, what do'ya say? Come on, don't break a guy's heart like that!
[ voicelines under the cut ]
When Summoned: Miss me with all that sentimental stuff. Year older or not, doesn't matter. What matter is the gifts the guys'll get me. Summon Line: Heartslabyul's not ready for the party I'm about to throw! Just wait and see! Groooovy!!!: [locked] Home: Y'know what's fun about birthdays? I don't even have to steal! The guys just bring me stuff for free! How fun is that? Home Idle 1: The guys at Spelldrive club organised a cake for me. Was pretty good, a shame you didn't come to try. Of course I would leave a piece for you! Who do you think I am? Home Idle 2: The school's full of rich snobs. They better not cheap out on gifts for me. Home Idle 3: Sto lat... Sto lat... That's the birthday song mum always sang to me. Dunno, living to a hundred years sounds like a bit much. Home Idle - Login: It's not my real birthday, y'know? Just the day dad found me in a bag. When I was little, mum used to say a stork dropped me at their doorstep. Sounds a bit nicer than a bag, doesn't it? Home Idle - Groovy: [locked] Home Tap 1: My hair gets so puffy during the night. Maybe I should get one of those Pomme guys to hook me up with some nice conditioner? Do you think they give out free samples? Home Tap 2: Everyone else gets birthday discounts at the Lounge, and all I get is Azul kicking me out. Pft. Home Tap 3: Look at Riddle, taking care of my birthday party all by himself! Aw, isn't he a sweetheart? You wouldn't even know the guy used to hate me. Home Tap 4: The shirt's a hand-me-down from my cousin. He's a bear beastman, so I'm kinda drowning in it, but ya just don't look a gifted horse in the mouth. Home Tap 5: Gonna swing by Scarabia later. Their Housewarden's real generous, sure he'll drop even more shiny stuff on my birthday? Home Tap - Groovy: [locked]

Okay I just speedran The Sunshine Court in like 12 hours. I will be rereading it soonly and giving more coherent thoughts but hereâs my main takeaways:
- Thought #1: Holy fuck holy fuck holy fuck this book exists. I am on the floor Iâm so fucking excited.
Spoilers below the cut
- I absolutely love that we get both Jean and Jeremy POVs. Itâs great especially because Jean is an oblivious and traumatized and if we just see things through his eyes we would never get to see Jeremy PINING like an absolute icon. Iâve said it before and Iâll say it again, itâs about the pining, the waiting, the yearning. Iâm simple man, I like my books gay, angsty, and with tension you could cut with a knife. This delivers on all accounts.
- I love getting to see the end of tkm from Jeanâs perspective. Getting to see him watch the Foxes v Ravens game was incredible. Iâm a very big fan.
- Renee and Jean time! Renee giving Jean her cross necklace. Iâm in tears, Iâm dead, Iâm on the floor. Itâs not the right time for us ð. Excuse me? Iâm unwell.
- Kevin Day, queen of my heart! Getting to see how someone other than Neil canonically sees Kevin is an absolute treat for me. Jeanâs weakness for beautiful men has become known. Me too Jean, me too.
- Jeremy, light of my life, I canât believe youâre rich. At least your family sucks because I donât think I could take it if your family was wealthy and nice.
- Jeremy + Jean meeting for the first time. Jeremy trying and failing to play with a yo-yo. Iâd die for you. They are ADHD ð€ Autism solidarity me thinks.
- Montana has a pro Exy team which is not at all plausible but Iâll let it slide because one Montana mention for the win and two the team is called the Rustics which is absolutely what weâd call a pro sports team if we had one. The only reason Montananâs at large would commit to indoor lacrosse is that Kayleigh Day was Irish and so solidarity.
- Laila and Cat, my beloveds. The description of their apartment has me yearning for the same. They have a bay window with a window seat okay. Thatâs like in my top three desires for a home.
- Carboard cutout dog with a classic Nora pet name. Iâll love Mister B forever. I love how Jeremy keeps moving him around. I love how Jean hates it.
- Trans characters! Poly characters! Nonbinary characters! Nora, my birthday has come a little late but damn this was a gift!
- I am absolutely pronouncing Jean wrong in my head probably 70% of the time.
- Iâm so fucking angry at the Ravens. My blood is boiling and I want to cry. Jean deserved better, Kevin deserved better, Riko deserved better. All the Ravens deserved better. I want to put Tetsugi Moriyama into a blender and feed him to the crows.
- Jean was 16. Iâm absolutely incandescent with rage.
- Jeremy is so patient with Jean and I will forever love him for that.
- This book was a lot shorter time frame than I was expecting, mainly because I keep forgetting thereâs going to be another one.
- The food control but is driving me crazy. It makes me so fucking mad. Let my boy eat. I want him to be happy.
- Jeremy has seen Jean looking ð ummmmmm hello? âMore exclusively than you do, I think.â Iâm on the floor.
- Laila buying Jean a sex toy?!? Oh my god. What would she even get him? I feel like he deserves a vibrating cock ring or something fun like that. That way service topâ¢ïž Jeremy Knox can use it on him when they finally get together.
- I love seeing Neil from Jeanâs perspective. Itâs funny how different he is from my perspective and Jeanâs/everyone elseâs. Iâve spent so much time thinking about him from Andrewâs pov that itâs weird seeing him through anyone elseâs. Everyone is like this scrappy irritating son of bitch is gonna get whatâs coming to him, and Andrew is like, well I canât not fuck him.
- The second Jean mentions Drake to Neil. And then Neil immediately calls a hit out on Gr@yson. Neil, you will always be famous to me.
- Jean-Yves! I hope he starts using his full name again at some point.
- Elodie :(((((( I can imagine what Jeanâs going through and I am so afraid for him. If he keeps pushing all these feelings down heâs going to break sooner or later, but probably sooner.
- Jeremyâs unconditional support of Jean has my whole heart. Jean has friends now. Iâm crying.
