i’m 20 today! I’ve been trying to practice mindfulness and gratitude more often lately and i hope to carry that into the next decade with me.

i spent a few hours yesterday journaling and reflecting on the last 10 years - it was actually really lovely to revisit key events in my life, both negative and positive, and seeing exactly how they have all fed into the person I am today. I lit a candle, made myself some peppermint tea and sat down at my dining table writing and listening to some music (mostly nujabes and jamiroquai lol, i love them both dearly)

this morning i opened presents with my family and i genuinely got tearful at how thoughtful and sweet they were - my mum is a single mother and she always makes such an effort, it’s like having a mum and a dad rolled into one. my mum got me a perfume i have been thinking of purchasing for months now (sintra by memo paris!) and some beauty products and pistachio-themed treats because i have been craving pistachio constantly recently.

my younger brother, the sweetest kid you could ever meet, got me another bottle of perfume I’ve been thinking of now for like, 18 months which made me so happy. whenever we go out together i always pop into the perfume store and get a sample of it and i really appreciate the thoughtfulness that went into it :)

I had a hot bath with Epsom salts for a good 45 minutes and will shortly have an ‘everything’ shower. maybe it’s just placebo but i believe in spiritually cleansing yourself on big days i.e., new years, birthdays - for me it’s symbolic of a new start and shedding the old to step into the new.

i’m doing a full skincare routine, may do my makeup and my boyfriend is coming over today too which I’m super excited about. I’ve also been drinking lots of water and herbal teas (yum!)

i’m off work today as it’s my study day, so I’d like to get some exam prep in this afternoon too.

i’m having such a lovely day and i can’t wait to see what the next decade holds for me - by 30 I’ll be a qualified solicitor, maybe I’ll be married (hopefully!) and will have my own place. i want to work abroad, i want to get a full aquarium and also start keeping jellyfish and i want to seize as many opportunities as i can to experience as much as possible and to grow as much as possible.

2/7/1974: how strange that two of the most influential artists in hip hop history on opposite sides of the world shared the same birthday. I don’t believe in astrological energy or forces, but that’s always seem coincidentally cosmic to me. At least, that’s the way I feel when I listen to their songs. So grateful for this music that enlightens my soul and gets me thru tough times.

Some tracks smell like a Happy Birthday on a Tuesday...

Music is littered with shrines to those who left too soon. The Japanese hip hop producer Nujabes (1974-2010) is sadly one of those. Yet, if one thin lining of silver can be found, it's that his absence is felt so much by so many, and that the work he left behind is appreciated that much more. Loved at home and abroad, you can look at any comment section on an upload of his music, or any social media thread referencing him, and see candles written in his honour.

His work both as solo and soundtrack artist and producer for other acts, often American, is rich with evidence of one of the best pair of sampling ears in hip hop history (at least imo). Drawing heavily from jazz around the world, Nujabes crafted music that is wistful, restful, intensely melodic, and ofc never anything less than an immaculate jam. His are some of the chillest tunes you are likely to find, and his all-too-short discography among the most consistent you can explore.

A pioneer in lo-fi hip hop and ambient melody in the 21st century, Nujabes is also an example to follow of how to create in and engage with other artistic cultures in a mutually respectful way. That's as much a part of his legacy as his music. The world don't move to the beat of just one drum, but sometimes, maybe just... for 4 and a half minutes?

The Beatles - “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” - paul. babe. why would you write this. these lyrics are violent and mean. the synths throughout are nice but mom pls come pick me up i’m scared

Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment - “Windows” - i used to be a huge chance the rapper fan towards the end of high school, and a couple days before graduation, this album titled Surf which heavily featured him dropped. i listened to it basically nonstop and something about the gentle harmonies and instrumentation in this song in particular just instantly transports me back into that “it’s about to be summer and things are going to change after but for now we’re here and we’re happy” type of mood that i love. honestly you could just play me the sample at 1:14 where a kid’s running through the halls and i’m immediately in that headspace. it’s very good

Hyper Potions - “Surf” - oh hey speaking of Surf lol (this song is v bright and bubbly and i have a smile on my face just listening back to it rn)

Nujabes ft. Usama Hiroto - “Spiritual State” - this song brings me peace like no other song does. this composition is a miracle and if you listen to no other song on this list, listen to this one

29. three songs that influenced you most (some songs change or save lives)

Owl City - “Fireflies” - this was the first electronica/electropop song i ever heard and fell in love with. this is the first song that ever had me genuinely thinking “wow! how did they make this?” and pretty much singlehandedly sent me along a path to learning more about electronic music

Skrillex - “With You, Friends (Long Drive)” - the “Fireflies” path took me to this song, which has a ridiculous synth solo at around the 2:30 mark which had me genuinely thinking “WOW HOW DID THEY MAKE THIS” and eventually led me to the software that i use to compose and produce music to this very day. we’re v close to this EP’s 9th birthday btw which is absolutely wild

SOPHIE - “BIPP” - ok so i realize this three song list might not appeal the most to you if you are not a fan of electronic music..but i am a fan of electronic music, and hearing this song for the first time was the most liberating experience ever. there’s very little in the way of actual percussion in this song, just wild and careening swoops and swooshes and sub basses. there aren’t really any chords so much as notes that slip and slide around where the pitches are supposed to go. all that’s anchoring this track together are these really affected, dramatic, almost sassy bubblegum vocals, and even that’s not that strong of a structural anchor. everything in this song is freely floating and ethereal and it singlehandedly yanked me away from the hypermasculine hellhole of EDM, towards bubblegum pop and comfortable, uplifting forms of expression. this song actually made me feel more femme, and that went a huge way towards me getting closer to figuring out my own identity. i’m still figuring things out every day! but in its own weird way this song led me towards finally feeling somewhat comfortable in myself, which, in its own weird way, kind of saved my life! it’s a good song

I’m not sure what I can write to you here that I haven’t said to you before. But the point of this blog, that Alex and I made, was for you to have a tangible piece of us, close at hand.  It isn’t easy, being far away from the people you love. I wish we could spend time together in person. I wish we could laugh, and talk shit, and talk about real shit, and cry together. I wish I could hug you. I wish I could hold your hand. Words are all we have with all this distance between us. And I guess this friendship has forced me to sharpen my writing, because I want you to feel me there with you, even when I’m physically not. I write you hugs, and besitos, and crackhead laughter whenever you want, and whenever you need me.  Even though I’ve said this many times to you before, I think it’s important I cement it in this creepy love blog for you... I can’t explain what your presence in my life means to me. Like the white ass semi country song by Dawes, you came Right On Time. I was a jaded mother fucker, but you already knew that. There was something so earnest in your reaching out that even while I felt like it was a joke someone wanted to sincerely get to know me, I had to take you seriously.
