Saber Marionette L
- -
During the workweek the stressors of being a CEO provided the mental challenges to her mind, but Lena Kieran Luthor detested the lack of time for her physical health. Since a workweek would inevitably turn into a workmonth without any real sort of time off, the busy woman prepared a side room extension from her office. Other than her quick science lab runs down and business meetings that majorly happened in the building, Lena normally omitted going outside.
Blinking at the activated eye comfort shield that signified it had turned nine in the evening, Lena sighed and squinted out the glass windows all around her. She had a damn good reason for those glass windows with the lack of outdoor interaction she had. It was nearing Halloween in October, and she reprimanded herself for the hectic scheduling as of late, reminding herself of the last two day's missed workouts.
As the owner of Luthor Corp, Lena had the highest granted floor of the mega industrial building. Thankfully that also translated that during National City's cloudy days, she could also find some breaks of the sun's rays in her office. Being able to revel in the natural light was important to Lena, and the dark haired woman felt her mouth turn up into a self-appreciative smile. Supergirl enjoyed it as well. National City's hero was far from a stranger at this point, but Lena ensured her private quarters were reinforced with lead. She could feel the tell-tale twinge in her lower back as she pushed back from her desk and exhaled. It was the last Friday night of the month and Lena had adopted a new workplace policy that everyone got to go home an extra hour early. Normally that never applied to her, and even now Lena rolled her neck and stretched her arms above her head, reveling in the burning pull of her lower back as she pulled to the side.
It had been a stressful work week. Decision after decision piled onto her desk in the form of paperwork needing signatures, and Lena had taken to applying some anti-inflammatory lotions to her wrists as she'd focused on creating grants and overseeing work productivity in graphs. Eyeing the discreet door leading to her personal company home, Lena poured herself a glass of water and padded to the side. Turning off the lights as she left, the CEO dropped all pretenses as she crossed the threshold and swiped the hanging gloves by the door. Sliding into them, Lena toed off her high heels and dropped into a controlled squat, slow and steady as she exhaled, closing her eyes and focusing on the dull throb of her ankles supporting her weight before rightening herself and rolling her wrists, getting used to the heavy tech of her personalized gloves.
Stepping barefoot over to the middle of the room after swiping two lenses from the nearby desk, Lena took another breath and aligned her feet to the measured floorspace. Raising a hand, she reached up and slotted the wireless lenses in front of her eyes, fingers adjusting the VR tech to her head as it powered up and enveloped her in a blue glow. Years ago she had discovered Beat Saber and while the marketed headsets had been clunky, Lena took it upon herself to customize her own minimal tech which would expand to the base of the user's neck and slide around to magnetically float in front of the user's eyes. Wryly shaking her head, the former Fencing Champion adjusted her weight as she stretched to her full height and then down, slowly testing her flexibility and finally resolve after a full work day that started since this morning at four.
Lena liked the hard beats of a fast song, liked ramping her heart pace up to a speeding drumroll as her body lost itself to the flow the sabers chased as they slashed the incoming boxes. The past two days had been too hectic for her to indulge, and Lena felt herself grin as she started up the Expert Level trial songs for a quick speedrun. Hearing the opening beats, Lena felt her brain lighting up with the familiar tension from the hand-eye coordination, her body greedily thriving on the dopamine as she easily sliced through the minutes. There was something so enticing about the safety of an adrenaline rush through games, the youngest Luthor intimately familiar since her early childhood of being adopted. Her brother preferred the creation of machines, uniform even as they bulked up through the years. Lena loved the science of creation, down to the atoms, and had adopted the habit of testing out others' creations for games to learn coding and getting a handle of others' interests.
Beat Saber had consistently filled the fond spot for her heart. Lena knew she was raised to be a Luthor, to achieve the grace in the spotlight without a concrete emotional pillar to guide her. Her adoption had been closed and kept from the public, and Lena knew to not buckle under Lionel and Lillian, and even though Lex had been taken with her, Lena knew to expand her skills as best she could. Boarding school had pressured her to learn etiquette, and Lena had fought to find some semblance of anything that resembled humanity outside of the fake social circles that haunted the young women all around her. Fencing fascinated her, and Lena threw herself into it alongside her studies of specimens in science.
There hadn't been enough time to enjoy the short time after graduation before she was indoctrined into nanobot research to further her dwindling connection with Lex, her brother visiting few and far between as she slowly developed projects with the intent to alleviate society's problems. Lena had stepped up when her brother threw L-Corp to the wayside, relocating to National City. Still Beat Saber followed Lena as she found her time monopolized by an internally self-destructive company, then death threats, then a continued working with National City's hero, Supergirl. Life had continued with emergency after emergency, and finally Lena slowly saw an alleviation to her schedule as she shifted focus to diversify stock into Catco Media after making friends with Kara Danvers.
Kara Danvers, who she now called her best friend. Kara Danvers, whose office she had filled with flowers on Valentine's Day after the newly minted reporter had called in Supergirl to save her life, now a strong ally, even if the superhero came with a clandestine underground organization. Kara Danvers, who Lena discovered was not exaggerating when the blonde had told her she could outeat anyone she had ever met. Kara Danvers, who still didn't know Lena all that well, specifically, her musical outlet.
Lena hummed, feeling the burn in her thighs as she crouched, then sprung up, jumping over the holographic wall that appeared in front of her, turning sharply to avoid the bombs around her discerning sabers to slice at a particularly exciting beat drop box. Breathing was important in fencing, and Lena felt the likeness of her past sport as she relaxed after parrying. She hadn't had a quarter of the training she used to have daily in order to satisfy her own high standards, but Lena had come to accept her secret hobby was keeping her fairly fit. Granted, it probably had more with her own metabolism succumbing to stress, but that was besides the point.
Breathing heavily, she called up the main menu and gave herself a break as she scrolled through the community's uploaded songs, filtering through how many beats per song and high ratings. Pausing always gave Lena time to take stock of herself, and she felt herself relaxing into the energized sample intros. Clicking her teeth as she clicked on the song title, Lena smiled as she loaded an older Taylor Swift song she wasn't familiar with that started with a catchy beat. The woman had made a name for herself throughout the years in different music genres, and Lena would always give a nod of kudos to the hard work that she knew went into any path, least of all a live industry. The least she could do was give this rendition a chance.
It started out hard with a surprising knee drop, and Lena slid to one side, then back to the next as she braced a leg out. Her eyebrow rose, heartbeat racing in excitement as she was forced to stand, then move side to side as walls moved in towards her, the boxes bouncing in the upper and lower corners as the beats started to come in hard and fast, sped up and barely with patterns as the creator deemed it necessary to exert the ones who would beat this level.
"Every conquest I had made Would make me more of a Boss to you"
Lena felt her body surge in excitement as she slashed and jumped, landing to slide into a crouch before a the familiar pattern of the opening pattern finally presented itself again.
"I'd be a fearless leader I'd be an alpha type When everyone believes you What's that like?"
A laugh broke out, and Lena spun as she took a millisecond too late to reach back up to her full height. Instead she palmed the middle of her customized glove as threw her hand out, the saber in game slicing up by itself as she threw it, snapping the box in half with a satisfied slice. The lyrics were surprising, highly probable not popular in society, but words that Lena could feel a relation to.
"I'm so sick of running as fast as I can Wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man"
Running two multimillion companies and being the face of both for a time was definitely something Lena had made sure to take every advantage that she could. Her gender had been more of a hindrance, but that ensured she tried harder to lead properly without feeling the need she had to compensate. Realistically it was easier to provide products that worked and spoke for themselves, which is why during the first breakaways after the transfer of ownership, Lena took to the labs, getting to know her fellow humans and losing herself in the process of scientific breakthroughs.
"They'd say I hustled Put in the work They wouldn't shake their heads and question how much of this I deserved"
Breathing hard, Lena jumped and crouched and slid, the erratic boxes sliced open and smashed and ran through, and deep inside, she could feel the woman she had become solidify, the characters of how she had to present as CEO and perfect Luthor daughter, slide away, crumble, and what remained was a woman who cared, and in turn, mattered to others. Lena's mind went to Kara, who had never judged her, and had believed in her fiercely. Kara, who had been undeterred when she'd turned the blonde away, set on keeping their connection to a beneficial working relationship, but who had slipped under her defences.
"What's it like to brag about raking in dollars And getting bitches and models And it's all good if you're bad And it's okay if you're mad"
Kara, who couldn't believe that Lena had dropped a power move and made an investment into CatCo Media, instead delightedly coming back to work at the company when Lena had insisted. Kara, who had been so understanding and protective as her own mother had been behind the attacks of countless innocent aliens, and who hadn't backed down when she'd been arrested, instead striving to prove her own innocence even when the evidence had been piled against her. Kara, who had seen Lena so tightly wound, that the blonde had taken to dropping off food and even inviting her out to slow lunches and quippy conversations about OTPs and neighbor's dogs.
"If I was out flashing my dollars I'd be a bitch not a baller They'd paint me out to be bad So it's okay that I'm mad"
Lena swallowed hard, imagining the arrogance and entitlement of people who had bad days and terrorist ideas and struggled to not snarl as she spun and double sliced at the incoming boxes, realizing that the more she cut and fought, her own compartmentalized boxes were starting to break. It had been a long year, hard-earned percentages of L-Corp and CatCo Media stock slowly pulling out of the red and into the black as National City residents slowly started to rely again on the persistence of corporations well-run with transparency.
"I'm so sick of running as fast as I can Wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man"
Her breathing was coming out in harsh pants, and Lena could tell this was going to be one of her favorite songs for Beat Saber. It suited her emotions right now, been a good driving rythm for her to get her aggression and anger out. Years of fencing had taught her that every motion was to be brisk and sharp, no energy wasted, but Lena let herself go, letting her body act out what she knew she needed to let go of, to have a physical release, knowing it would be okay, she could take it--
"I'm so sick of them coming at me again Cause if I was a man Then I'd be The Man"
Before she knew it, red flashed across the top of her screen, signaling an incoming call from Kara Danvers. Lena blinked, partially distracted as the last wall holographically buffeted into her, and against her better judgement, Lena laughed as she watched her high score plummet sharply, answering the call with a quick salute against her temple.
"Kara, hey, what's up?"
"Lena!! Are you alright?"
The woman in question blinked, breathing hard and smiling as she took off the lenses and nodded her head, shaking her wet ponytail out as she slicked back her hair again and noted how hard she was sweating. A good workout indeed. Walking over to her water at the desk, Lena pulled her gloves off and hung them, walking back and taking a well-deserved drink.
"Of course, just finished up for the night."
Kara was shuffling something in the back of the call, and Lena smiled as she hung her head, realizing why Kara had called.
"I wanted to check in, make sure you're still down for the rest of Game Night."
Rolling her wrists and neck out, the CEO glanced at the time blinking from her clock. 10.15. Hmm.
"Are you sure, Kara, it's fairly late, you guys must be finishing up."
Even the blonde's huff was cute.
"Wellllll, we might be finishing up with Game Night and I've been missing my perfect partner, but we're going to pop in a movie while we wrap up. It's Friday, the night after Halloween, c'mon, Lena, we've got candy and pumpkin seeds and--"
"Alright, darling, I'll be there, give me thirty minutes."
Hearing the drunken cheers in the background, Lena smiled. She may be a largely successful businesswoman and scientist, but leave it to her friend to include her and double check she was still coming. Lena headed for the shower, unaware that on the other side of her balcony window, Supergirl had been floating, eyes wide as she had flown over earlier to check what was going on with Lena's racing heartbeat. Even though she hadn't seen anything in that lead-lined room, Supergirl had smiled and then left Lena to her activities. The CEO was busy, but she had made time for them, after all.
Kara raced off, happily joining her friends again as she zoomed around and nabbed all the spare blankets and pillows around to enjoy movie night. Lena arrived thirty minutes later, and that Friday, the night after Halloween, Kara pulled her down to her on the couch and wrapped her up in a warm embrace. Lena decided she didn't need to race to Kara's to find a spot, nor did she need to get there quicker. Kara would save her a spot, and Lena would gratefully settle against her, and it became another home away from home. One day, she'd invite Kara to know her better. For now, Lena would continue to play how Kara wanted to play. If blue eyes looked to her fondly and Lena responded by smiling and hands tapping out a drumroll beat, no one was the wiser.

A/N - I've been watching/listening to this beautiful piece of work for like five days straight, and I kept thinking about Lena Luthor being a fencing champion and what she did in her spare time, if she HAD spare time to get some sort of exercise, and I came up with this. I miss Beat Saber so much, and it's time I partake again since winter is coming zwz
youtube
Also, some random ass links that led to this fic being made, and lo and behold, it's a miraculous coincidence it's coming out on Lena Luthor's bday XD
"A fencer's ideal strength routine builds force production through the upper and lower body while also providing a foundation for developing power in the attacking positions. Core compound barbell movements of deadlift, bench, and squat should be the focus"
"Plyometric work, such as depth jumps and explosive push-ups are good ways to develop power, and given that you will push off from your toes when lunging, even jumping rope can help, as well as providing good conditioning work."
PS - oh, to build up my repertoire of expressing myself in fic form again XD one of my first anime was Saber Marionette J, and I think it would be hilarious to think of Lena as anything other than being the one who would create a Scientific Project to repopulate the world, but Lesbians XD

Lena
TW: mentions of drowning, dissociation, 4-year-old Lena in intense distress, and witnessing a dead body
The sky above the lake is painted black with a heavy brush– cut through only by the gray clouds rumbling above it. The moon, which used to be so clear, now hides behind the fog. It pokes out every so often to make the smallest of appearances, reminding Lena it’s still there.
At night the trees, all tall and stocky, look more like people than plants. They’re skinny giants with lanky limbs and their eyes are stuck on the little girl standing at the shore. It’s all Lena can seem to think about– how the air is so cold and her mom isn’t holding her anymore. She’s alone again as they watch her, waiting for the right moment to pounce.
Her mom always tells her monsters aren’t real. She checks the closets and under the bed every night before bedtime just in case. She always tells her they’re safe.
But the glimmering water they spend every Sunday dipping their toes in just swallowed her whole and sucked up all the air bubbles with her. The waves they paddled in together under shining skies had turned dark and suddenly, the world was upside down.
The lake was their spot. The water belonged to them. And now, her mom belongs to the water.
Lena stares straight ahead of her, as she’s done since the sun was still shining, and holds pieces of her swimsuit in her fingers.
The material is mostly dry now. It hangs loose on her body– the damp spots making her shiver whenever they meet her skin. Mom had told her she would grow into it. Lena isn’t sure.
She isn’t sure that the trees won’t come to life and finally attack. Isn’t sure she’ll ever be able to move again. Isn’t sure if any of this is real at all or if it’s just another bad dream she needs to wake up from.
Lena hopes it is. She hopes her mom is at the other end of it– ready to pick her up and rock her back to sleep.
As Lena tries to find the strength to pull her swimsuit away from her, she can hear something crunching behind her. It sounds like footsteps in the gravel only louder. It makes her wonder if the Monster Trees have decided to come for her– if they think she isn’t aware of their plans to take her too.
“Hey!” A deep voice calls out to her. “Hey, are you alright?”
More footsteps approach. They’re shining a light now too – a big one. It makes Lena shiver even harder and her stomach twist. When did it get so cold?
“Hey– kid.”
Slowly, Lena turns her head and wrinkles her eyes at the white beams hitting her. There’s an ambulance in front of her– over by the edge of the trail. It looks like the ones that sometimes drive by their cottage, to the house at the end of the road where Mrs. Porter lives. Mom says it’s because she’s so old, she gets sick very easily now. Sometimes, she needs help making it to the doctor.
“Hey…” The voice softens.
Lena squints at it– the light is getting unbearable– and tries to step backward. But her legs have forgotten how to move and the stones beneath her are so slippery. She stumbles in her haze and her feet slide beneath her. She falls hard onto her bottom.
A noise escapes as Lena looks down at herself. Her fingers dig into the sand, grasping piles of pebbles and sea glass.
“It’s okay– I’m not gonna hurt you.”
But it does hurt– her legs and her arms and her eyes and everything else. There’s pain shooting through her hips– the rocks are so hard. And as Lena’s fingers tighten around the pebbles, cutting deep into her skin, she can feel her face getting hot. Her jaw clenches and quivers beneath the tension so hard it feels like it might snap in half.
She should be crying, Lena thinks to herself.
It hurts worse than it did when she fell off her scooter in the street last week. But the tears don’t fall. It’s like her brain can’t remember how.
“Oh… sweetheart, you okay?”
When Lena looks up, she sees the man with the voice crouching down in front of her. He’s wearing big green pants and an orange vest that glows in the dark. They crinkle when he moves– like plastic bags being smushed together.
“Are you cold?” He asks, holding out a silver square for her. When Lena doesn’t move, he unfolds it and it transforms into some sort of tin-foil sheet. “It’s okay– you can stay there. I’ve just got a blanket in case you’re chilly. Sound good?”
Lena releases her grip on the pebbles and stares at him.
Even in the darkness, it’s clear how pale she is. Her face is ghastly and white– it’s as if it’s never seen the sun before.
“My name is Kieran,” the man continues. “I drive that big truck over there with my friends. I’m just here to make sure you’re alright and to give you some help.”
He waits for a moment then slowly approaches. Kneeling down at Lena’s side, he drapes the blanket over her shoulders. It’s thin and crinkly like an old sheet– laid on so softly it hardly touches her.
Goosebumps are covering her arms and legs. She must’ve been out here all day, he thinks.
“Here, kiddo… just want to warm you up a bit. We don’t want you catching a cold, do we?”
The blanket is big enough that it wraps around Lena’s front and falls behind her in a bunch. Lena glances at it for a second then looks back at the man.
Behind him, two other grown-ups are stepping out of the ambulance. They pull out something that looks like a tall bed on wheels with straps going across it. They look at her for a moment and pause, saying something to the other that she can’t quite hear. But they don’t go to her– they walk to the water. To her mom.
“Hey,” Kieran says when he catches her looking. “Hey… can you tell me your name?”
Slowly, Lena reaches for the blanket, wishing she could pull it tighter. She tells herself to move and tries to remember how her arms used to feel before this morning, when they still knew how to follow directions. But they soon fall beside her, unable to hold the material for more than a second.
“Were you here with your family?” Kieran asks. “With your mom?”
Mom. Lena’s stomach twists at the word. It makes her feel like how she gets when she’s been sitting in the car for too long.
She furrows her brow ever so slightly and the tiniest whine escapes her. Her head is hurting– it feels too tight.
Puzzled, Lena looks at the man. She stares at him with her knit brow and hard eyes, waiting for him to read her mind.
“You’ve still got your goggles on, hun,” he says. He stays seated on his knee and tilts his head, smiling at her. “Can I take them off? Is that why you’re makin’ noises?”
When Lena doesn’t say anything, he extends his hand slowly towards her face. Vaguely, she can see it approaching. She knows she should flinch. He’s so much bigger than she is. So much bigger than her mom. But she can’t move.
So she sits stoic as the elastic band pulls the hair that’s dried against it. It peels slowly away from her like a hundred bandaids being removed at once. But after a moment, Lena can feel a pressure around her forehead release.
“That must feel better, aye?”
Lena looks straight past Kieran at the other two grown-ups in green pants and orange vests. They’re still walking the stretcher down to the lake, talking to each other in hushed voices, muffled by the wind. They’re going for her mom, she thinks, they’re going to find her.
“Oh… no, you don’t wanna see that,” Kieran mumbles.
He catches Lena’s semblance of attention again and this time makes sure to keep it.
He whisks her up into his arms with a grunt as he stands back up, and keeps her securely wrapped in her blanket.
“You’re being such a brave girl, you know that?” He coos, settling her on his hip. “You’re so brave.”
He brushes a piece of damp hair out of Lena’s face as he speaks and smiles softly at her. She’s so light in his arms, bundled up in the tin-foil sheet made for someone three times her size. It engulfs her completely– leaving only her head exposed to the world.
“It’s all gonna be okay, yeah?”
For a second, Kieran looks past her at his partners. They wade into the abyss, water sloshing onto the shore behind them. Through the darkness– it’s hard to see more than the glow of the orange vests growing further and further away. But as they lock the stretcher onto the edge of the shore, he makes sure to bounce Lena ever so slightly to turn her away from it.
“Do you like rhymes?” He asks her. “Or songs?”
Lena tucks her chin to her chest and releases a long exhale. Her eyes are starting to sting from being held open all day.
“Why don’t we do some songs?”
He looks at her pale skin and the few freckles scattered across her nose. Her white chapped lips, cracked around the edges from being left out in the cold for so long, and the bags that hang below her eyes. And as the paramedics go deeper into the water, he watches how she stares directly below her, not looking at anything in particular, and takes in her green eyes. He tries to imagine what might be behind them– the memories of what she’s seen. The moment when her mother went under. The hours of looking and waiting for her to return, all alone in the frigid air, with nothing but a soggy swimsuit and goggles on her forehead.
She must’ve known she wasn’t coming back, he thinks. No kid could stand there for twelve straight hours and not know.
“Do you like…”
Kieran pauses for a moment, then starts to sing.
“Theeeee wheels on the bus go round and round,
round and round,
round and round.”
He bounces Lena gently to the rhythm as he goes through the lyrics, his words hardly above a whisper. It’s just loud enough that Lena will hear him, just loud enough that she’ll have something else to focus on.
“The wheels on the bus go round and round,
all through the town.
The wipers on the bus go–” He stops for a moment and gives Lena a poke. “How do they go?”
She continues to look past him with her empty stare as he fills in for her and rocks her from side to side to show the motion.
“Swish swish swish
 swish swish swish,
The wipers on the bus go swish swish swish,
All through the town.”
“What comes next?” He asks her. “Is it the babies on the bus? What do the babies on the bus do?”
In the distance– there are red and white lights poking through the trees. The first true signs of another ambulance coming to take back the woman in the lake. Lena’s mother.
But Kieran keeps going with the song, even when Lena looks away from him. Even when she stares at the lights with more awareness than he’s seen from her all day. He just turns her around again and finds another rhyme, another story, another anything to keep her with him.
“You’re alright, darlin’,” he says. “It’s all gonna be alright. We’re gonna take you on the truck in a minute and my friends are gonna check you out– make sure you’re not sick. And then you’ll get some stickers and you’ll get to turn on the big lights if you want. But it’s all gonna be okay.”
Lena doesn’t know if she believes him. She wants to. But everything is so wrong.
“Now… let’s do another song,” Kieran thinks aloud. “That always helps my little girl when she’s feeling scared.”
He adjusts Lena in his arms, takes in a breath, then starts again.
“Hush little baby don’t say a word,
Papa’s gonna buy you a mockingbird”
No, this isn’t right.
“And if that mockingbird don’t sing…”
Lena can feel her face getting hot. There’s something sharp in her throat– her belly is twisting again.
“Papa’s gonna buy you a diamond ring”
Her face is wet now. Silent tears creep from her chapped eyes for the first time all day. They make her cheeks burn with irritation and she wants to rub them– no, she wants her mom to wipe them dry the way she had this morning when Lena bumped her knee jumping off the sofa.
“And if that diamond ring is brass,
Papa’s gonna buy you a looking glass”
Lena can see herself back at home– sitting in bed with her comforter bunched up around her chest. She can see her eyelids drooping, see her mom’s hand holding hers, trailing her thumb across her wrist, as she sings her to sleep.
“And if that looking glass gets broke,
Mama’s gonna buy you a billy-goat”
Lena sees it so vividly she can almost feel it. Her fluffy pink pillow beneath her head, her teddy bear tucked under her arm, and her mom kissing her forehead as she allows sleep to gently embrace her.
This isn’t right, Lena thinks. Her mom is supposed to be here. She’s the one who should be singing. She’s the one who should be holding her.
Lena’s breathing increases rapidly. She squirms in Kieran’s grasp– she wants to be put down. She wants to go home. She wants her mom. She wants her now.
With a whine, Lena turns her head and tries to wriggle out of his arms.
But what she sees behind her– it makes her freeze all over again.
The grown-ups in orange vests are out of the water. They’re wheeling the tall bed back towards the ambulance and there’s a woman on it. Her mom. Her mom is on the bed.
Lena whimpers. It can’t be her mom.
This woman is soaking wet. Her orange hair looks black– it cascades over the side of the stretcher, stringy and thick, all clumped together, dripping onto the beach a thin dark liquid, which leaves a trail behind it. This woman lays there on her back, frozen and still, like she should be sleeping.
But she isn’t. Her eyes are wide open.
Lena makes a noise and tries to lean away from Kieran. Her heart is starting to pound– she can hear it in her ears. Big and loud like a drumline, drowning out the sounds of everything else.
“Hey– hey, come back to me.”
The older man’s voice is foggy and distorted.
Lena sniffs as she leans further. She just doesn’t understand it– how her mom could turn so white and why her lips are so blue. It isn’t right– it isn’t her.
Her mom is supposed to be pretty like a princess. She’s supposed to be gentle. But now, she looks like the monsters Lena’s always been so afraid of. The ones she saw that night on the telly when she was meant to be sleeping and crept into the living room while her mom was watching a movie. She’d caught one glimpse and sprinted right back to bed so they wouldn’t be able to catch her, then hid under the covers, shaking, until she fell asleep.
Lena sniffs again, whining through her fast-paced cries.
Her mom is a monster and still, Lena wants to run to her. She wants to throw herself on top of her frigid body and shake her until she wakes up. Until she’s no longer sleeping with her eyes open like she’s frozen in time, paralyzed in the last second of her true existence twelve hours ago.
Lena wants to hug her. She wants to bring her back to life. She knows she can– she knows if she could just be allowed to try, she could do it.
So she fights with all she has to once and for all, throw herself right out of Kieran’s arms. She hurls her body forward– determined to run to her Mom one last time. She’s going to get to her. She’s going to fix her. She knows she can– she knows it, she knows it, she knows it.
But Kieran’s too strong. He pulls Lena back and holds her even tighter, turning his body around again so she can’t see her anymore.
He says something to her– something that’s supposed to be reassuring. But Lena can’t hear a word.
Her fast-past cries turn into screams and she opens her mouth as wide as it will go, wailing with all her might. She sobs over Kieran’s attempts to calm her down, kicking her legs with all she has because if she’s hurting– he needs to be hurting too.
It’s gut-wrenching to watch.
The cold air burns Lena’s throat and sears through her chest. Her cracked lips finally split from being open so angrily and each scream pounds in her temple upon its release. Her body is too tired for such emotion but Lena doesn’t care. None of it matters anymore. Her mom is gone. Her world is gone.
So Lena does the only thing she can do– she cries. Even when snot bubbles from her nose and trails down onto her lips. Even when drool drips from her mouth, down past her chin. She cries so hard that Kieran thinks she might make herself throw up. He freezes a bit when Lena gasps for air with a heave so intense her entire body lurches upwards. Her shoulders shoot to her ears and her face scrunches up.
But all that follows is an even heavier sob.
They get heavier and heavier until Lena’s entire body is shaking. Her screams grow raspy and strained– her vocal cords shot from the effort.
Kieran tries to calm her down. He talks to her and rocks her, tightens her blanket then loosens it again– anything to make her more comfortable.
But nothing works. Lena is utterly inconsolable.
Behind them, the woman’s body is loaded into the rig. The crunching sound from earlier returns, only quieter this time, when the ambulance leaves to take her to the morgue.
Kieran tries not to think about what’ll happen afterward. When the autopsy is done and Jane Doe is identified– a social worker will have to decide what should happen to the little girl in his arms. They’ll place her in foster care or if she’s lucky, with a distant relative. Perhaps a grandparent.
At some point, one of his teammates approaches him, holding a small ratty backpack patterned with mermaids. They tap him on the shoulder to catch his attention.
“We found this over by the benches,” The other paramedic says. She shines a flashlight on the tag on the inside, which is written on in neat cursive. “The name inside says Lena. Think it belongs to her?”
“Lena…” Kieran says softly, shifting the distraught child in his arms. “Are you Lena?”
Through her wails, Lena manages a nod. She gasps for air a few more times, her shoulders shooting up with each breath, then lets out a crackled whine.
“Oh, hun, it’s gonna be okay,” Kieran tells her. He rubs her back and tries to smile at her– not allowed to show that he wants to break right there with her. “Let’s get you checked out in the truck.”

Before the Storm
Before The Storm
"This should be it. Thanks for coming with me, Lena." Kara held the door open for her friend as Lena slipped past, the crisp step of her high heels getting lost in the bar's happy hour noise, patrons yelling over the pumping base and lively karaoke. Kyrptonian eyes were bright as she peered at the bottles lining the walls like an alcoholic library. They were both here on prelude to business for tomorrow: Kara for an interview with the art gallery that was setting to open tomorrow curating works from all human and alien walks of life, and Lena taking a financial investment in an up and coming woman-owned business in the arts. Their meeting inspired a casual stakeout of the places around, and they had stuck to the bar beside the art gallery where Kara had done some research and found out the owners were friends and visited to support often.
"Of course, Kara. It's nice to have a night out sometimes." Red lipstick parted in a fond smile as the CEO took in her blonde friend sweeping by her and leading the way. It was always interesting seeing Kara in different situations in her reporter role. While Lena normally didn't frequent these types of establishments other than the monthly get-together with the Superfriends, it was an even rarer sight to see the Kryptonian around other aliens outside of her Supergirl role.
Victoria Chase had made a name for herself after the storm of Arcadia Bay, photographing the horrific event and raising money for the town's rebuild outside of her family name years ago. The incident had piqued Lena's interest, the adopted Luthor feeling the tell-tale call of bloodline and needing to make a name for herself outside of it garnering many a look at the art portfolio Victoria had taken to posting online. After five years and times of travel capturing more and more natural horrors, Victoria had stated in a press announcement she was looking to open up her own art gallery, away from her parents' Chase Space, with her partner, Max Caulfield in National City. Their motivation to do so was for inclusion of all, aliens and humans alike, to come together and share in expressions of art concerning global warming and other natural events that had taken away homes and towns and cities. A portion of their proceeds would go to charities, and further the awareness of supporting more green ecological steps and inclusive diversity.
Alien Amnesty had been put into place for the better part of three years, but Lena knew better than anyone a law passing would take time to cement itself socially. Noticing the ease of which Kara carried herself between the tables and people, Lena was grateful this establishment had succeeded in making aliens and humans alike comfortable. When Kara beckoned her over to a snagged table and three sets of double shot glasses in front of her, Lena made her way over and raised an amused eyebrow.
"Normally you're an eat first, drink later type." Her statement was met with a wide smile and sparkling blue eyes gently pushing the drink in front of her.
"You don't have to if you don't want, Lena," Kara started, then nodded up as she raised a toast to the ceiling. Lena's eye followed as Kara continued, holding her glass out for her friend to cheers against. "But there was a poster saying we would get a free appetizer if we ordered two drinks, and a free photo after five!!"
Polaroids draped down the pillars and sides of walls, and the ceiling was covered in stories. It looked like a community effort for interaction, and at that the dark-haired woman acquiesed to a quick clink against Kara's glass as she tipped her head back and took the offered drink. Warmth bloomed through her as she swallowed, her chest tightening as she watched Kara down hers, the blonde a mix between business and casual as she slapped her palms down on the table, letting out little taps against the hardwood.
"Whooo, that's new!!" Tilting her head, Lena couldn't help but laugh, Kara's outburst louder than the crackbreak of the pool balls behind their shared space.
"What is?" Kara fanned herself slightly, crossing her legs and bumping Lena's a bit as she repositioned herself. She had taken to wearing more pants as of late, explaining that she enjoyed her costume's suit better with coverage, and it reflected nicely of the fall weather. The blonde may be indestructible, but sensation was sensation and Lena knew better than most the effect of clothing and how it could be worn as an armored aesthetic.
"They serve alien drinks here. Wierdly enough, it tastes better than where we normally go."
"Are you sure you don't want to stick to human alcohol where it won't affect you so you can get more free potstickers?" Lena teased, leaning back and enjoying the relative ease the drink brought her. Kara gasped, mock glaring.
"How did you know my plan? And what if I wanted something else?" Lena threw up a hand in a motion that excused her friend's sentence and laughed. "Darling, I know you better than that."
Blue eyes blinked slowly at her, and Kara's smile deepened as she leaned forwards. Not for the first time Lena's eyes dipped to those pink lips, then blinked to take in all of Kara downing another drink. It had been a fairly hectic week with Alex and J'onn running Supergirl into multiple mob jobs, National City thugs scurrying under the last covers of summer parties and illegal rings where out of towners had taken to coming to. It wasn't anything outside of the ordinary, but Kara had confessed to Lena she preferred the direct fights of alien tussles where she didn't have to hold back as much to hurt anyone. There hadn't been a lot of down time as of late for a one on one get-together, and Kara seemed determined to catch up now since the season was changing and the last they had been out had been near the start of the summer. Lena didn't miss the assassination attempts as more and more time passed and the city understood she had a good communication with Supergirl, but the CEO refused to admit she looked forwards to the blonde superhero always arriving in the nick of time. Damn her and her masochistic streak.
Around them the place burst into a roar of excitement, and Lena blinked. Both her and Kara looked back at the open door where a pair of women had come in, and one was currently in a headlock by a tattooed punk who popped up from out behind the bar. The shorter brunette was laughing, freckles highlighted by the heat of the sun, and in a smooth motion stepped away and a shutter clicked from a polaroid camera. The print captured just in time as the pixie-cut blonde stepped forwards and hooked a leg behind the knee of the lean woman, effectively sweeping the blue-haired punk off her feet and nonchalantly tipping her back onto the floor in a move that would do Alex Danvers proud. Before a real scuffle could begin, a flash of red flannel had settled between the two women and Kara and Lena looked on with interest when another woman with a feathered earring playfully flicked both of them on the nose.
"Cut it out, Chlo, and really, Victoria? Couldn't you and Max have visited any earlier?"
A snort came from the taller blonde, elegantly righting her hair as she took the shorter brunette woman's hand in hers and walked deeper into the bar, where patrons nodded happily to the newcomers and raised hands for high fives.
"Tell that to this one over here. . . she really Maxed out her excuses with the jetlag from France."
"Tori!! You said we wouldn't kiss and tell."
"Oh, so it's YOU I should be grilling, Mad Max!! Not surprised, only disgusted. C'mon, I found a song that suits you both to a T."
Kara and Lena turned back to each other and laughed, a little surprised and both delighted. Victoria Chase and Max Caulfield had touched down in the area, and they were privy to a slightly hectic reunion with their friends. Kara recognized Chloe Price as the punk tattooed owner from the research she had done, and it was a bit of a shock to Lena as she recognized Rachel Amber, if only from her guilty pleasure of watching old campy horror movies in her rare spare time. The Oregonian actress was soon to shoot a movie, little else was known about it. While they watched the four set up by the karaoke where Chloe nodded to the host, Kara and Lena received their three free orders of potstickers and both asked for a different dish on the menu, plus Lena another drink. She'd asked a bit earlier, and Kara had told her she really only ordered 3 alien shots and normal alcohol. Their bar food was turning out to be quite delicious, and Lena noticed Kara was turning a bit red as she looked at her, finishing off the third of the doubles she had gotten.
Behind them, Chloe Price had picked up the mic and was mimicking playing an electric guitar while whipping the cord around in circle as she jammed. Kara and Lena could see the mischievous glint to her as she herded her two friends and partner into a round table and the bar started thumping as aliens and humans alike cheered -- how did Lena just now figure out this was a gay bar?
"To a happy belated birthday to Queen Bee of Blackwell, long may it suck ass so we can forget the fucking horrors there -- to Sticky!! Icky!! Vicki!!"
The crowd went wild. Kara and Lena laughed along with them as the blonde prepared to lunge towards the cocky punk, and they both watched as Max yelled too as Rachel cheered and easily tipped Victoria back into her seat. Charisma flowed out of Chloe as the beat hit, and suddenly Chloe was singing as she mobbed the mic and took over the karaoke floor.
"I don't want a girl who gets a car for her Sweet 16 Or spends a stack of dollar bills on a limousine--"
Kara spit-takes into the air and gapes while Lena freezes.
"I want a girl who takes a bus and who wears baggy jeans--"
Their eyes meet and Lena's eyes hammer. Those words slam into her and she remembers the early first times of meeting Kara, where she had told her she'd flown there, on a bus, after not needing her parking ticket validated. God, her attraction to the blonde had been so very obvious in hindsight. Kara had stood for someone who understood in the first moments of meeting her, and Lena remembered how much it had hurt when the truth had come to fruition. They had slowly pieced it back together, but damn, had it been hard, and she had ached, ached to see how much of Kara she had missed after that reveal.
"Rockin' Nike Airs, what the hell are Louboutins?!"
The kryptonian watched with wide eyes as Victoria Chase kicked off her a sneaker and it hit the upside of Chloe's head. The punk just laughed and continued to skip around, showmanship kicked into high gear as she hit energetic beat after energetic beat.
"Don't want no fake tan, short skirt, Daddy's money don't work!! Shop until you drop on the toooown~!!"
Lena flushed hard as she watched Kara's gaze snap to hers, then down, almost helplessly sliding down her legs before the blonde looked up, guiltily wide-eyed. In the background Max was keeping Victoria from strangling Chloe, laughing a bit herself, and Rachel was getting up, slinking to join her loud girlfriend.
"I want a girl stronger than her father Someone who will laugh at tryna fit in the crowd~"
Kara's eyes are seeming to be an apraisal, and her fingers are grabbing for a potsticker. At this point the song is pointed and from what Lena knows of Victoria Chase, the photographer had been fairly successful in being everything that this song wasn't. Clearly Chloe was making fun, and as Victoria stopped promising violence, Lena watched as she saw Max gently kiss her, grabbing her polaroid camera and snapping a selfie of the four as Chloe pulled Rachel firmly to her side, where they started to sway, looking into her the actress's eyes.
"And all we used to dream about~ Is getting rich and getting out~"
They both watched as Rachel and Chloe touched their foreheads together, singing a beautiful symphony, and then Rachel pulled away to do a twirl, Chloe expertly pulling her close again and dipping her, then pulling her back up to grin at each other. Lena felt her heart clench, partly of her own history, but also because of Kara, who she could see watching her, seeing how she was taking the song. Somewhere deep inside, Lena felt a tie to this song, or at least to the chorus. What she wouldn't give for more time with Kara, especially after it had taken them so long to come back together. Her penthouse had only known happiness when Kara had been there, and it was slowly becoming something more than a place to cry as she pulled herself back together and out from her family's legacy.
"Move to the nicer part of town Where we'd have numbers on our house It took awhile to figure out~"
The Oregonians were all smiling at each other, clearly having remembered the horrors of Arcadia Bay and knowing all of their relationships and friendships were stronger after it. Lena looked to Kara and found her steadfastly looking back, and suddenly Lena is reaching out, Kara's hands in hers, and they cheer to Chloe as she gallantly spins Rachel away from her back to her seat and resumes her birthday callout to Victoria.
"What type of girl that I'm about Who brings the real man out of me -- Rachel knows!!"
The crowd laughs at that, and Lena hears the tempo pick up again, Kara's hand firmly in her own even though the kyptonian is trembling.
"I don't really want no trust fund baby I like my women independent. And I say to people, that's my lady And we don't need nothing e~e~else"
The room was stifling hot, the crowd around them joining the singing. Kara was looking at Lena like she had so many times before, and Lena wondered how many times they had been down this road of calling it friendship while giving to each other everything past friendship and any sort of label. Lena recognized this was ridiculous, but as a businesswoman and a Luthor, she had been raised to stamp down anything that was short of exposing imperfection. Two double shots in wasn't anything near what she could take, but Lena blinked and was reminded, she was in a gay bar with her best friend and it had been upwards of three years since she had Kara in her life. Kara, who had seen her so broken at her worst, and had promised to always protect her. Kara, who even when they were at their fallout and Lena had desperately tried to hate, had not given up. The Luthor may be in her blood, but Lena wondered now what that meant when Kara and her were just women at a bar. Not a reporter and CEO, not a Super and a Luthor, but two best friends, and this song-- Chloe was outdoing herself.
"Don't want a girl who takes selfies, Want her makeup free!!"
This time it's Max that launches herself at Chloe, and the punk laughs as they both hit the floor, wheezing and continuing the song, pushing the photographer away by a palm at her forehead.
"Don't want no mean girl lady, let's call her Sticky Vicki!!"
Victoria has launched herself on top of the pile and Rachel shrugs and joins in. Lena wonders for a moment if there's a chance tomorrow will be cancelled, and that's what it takes to shake the moment. As Rachel yanks the mic from Chloe and yells,
"HER DADDY TOLD HER HOW TO FIX CARS, MAYBE SHE COULD FIX ME!!"
Lena and Kara pull away from each other as as a couple more of Chloe and Rachel's employees head to the front, good-naturedly pulling them off of each other, and Lena thinks this is enough. It's enough that she's here in this moment with Kara, watching women who have built a life from scratch with efforts and the bonds of friendship and love, and she tilts her chin, wobbling a bit as she leaves money on the table and in an instant Kara is at her side, sliding the money back into her purse as she supports Lena's elbow. Kara leaves her own money on the table and they make their way out, giggling as they hear,
"Wanna girl with common sense Who's dripping in confidence DON'T WANNA DIE TO GET RICH BUT SHE LOVE FIFTY CENT!!--"
The shrieking laughing of karaoke dies out the moment they hit outside, and Kara pulls Lena to her front as she slips into a back alleyway beside the bar, Lena tucking into her front as she registers the DING~ of the bicycle's bell as it zooms by. It's not that late by any means, but there is a chill in the air as the breeze picks up around them. The slit in the length of her dress gives Lena some reprieve for how hot it was inside, and she heats up again when Kara unconsciously nuzzles a kiss to her forehead. The alleyways are the only shadowy part of the city's street, illuminated up by the full moon, and before Lena knows it, Kara is asking her a question.
"Do you trust me?"
She's nodding instinctively. It's Kara. The blonde had grabbed her jacket and she used that to tug around Lena, enveloping her in a blanket of warmth and the scent of her best friend. Lena's heart rate ratcheted up, not used to the easy way Kara seemed to hold her close. It had been a while since Kara had told her she was Supergirl, and while they'd hugged, Lena hadn't been in Supergirl's arms since before she had known. That changed now as Kara smiled at her, then gently pulled her into a bridal carry. Lena yelped, burying her face in Kara's neck in embarrassment.
"Shhh, I've got you."
"Kara, I can WALK!!"
"Mmmn, I like my women independent."
Lena pulled back to smack Kara playfully on her arm, then shrieked and held herself back close again. They were in the air, above the tree and cityline, and the moon was full and beautiful and so very big. It illuminated Kara's face as she continued to smile at her, and Lena couldn't understand how anyone could be so beautiful and kind and out of this world -- because Kara was.
"I didn't expect tonight to go how it did." Kara's voice was soft, and she was still looking at Lena, direct and open and with a look that Lena had seen before. Had seen so many times before, and she knew she had mirrored, whether they were alone or not. She mirrored it now, leaning into Kara's shoulder and taking solace in the solidness she knew Kara Danvers was. To her surprise, she could hear the kryptonian's heartbeat, and it was a speeding stutter.
"How did you expect tonight to go?"
In the silence that followed, Lena watched as Kara slowly pulled both of them steadily higher, away from the ground and the city, felt Kara's heartbeat start to speed even faster as Lena used the privacy of the moment to place her palm over Kara's pounding chest. The moon was so different to look at like this, a quiet observer of the earth as it reached out endlessly to touch everything with its light. Lena looked at Kara then, really looked at her as she had before Kara was a friend, before she had to hide her interest with respectable friendship. Kara's pupils were wide, and Lena felt supported in more ways than just the physical as she was shown the world as Kara saw it.
"I expected karaoke to shake you up even more than it did."
Lena let out a laugh, and Kara tilted her head to the side.
"Darling, I've heard Roxanne."
Kara snorted.
Then, a beat.
"I have a song for you, I'd like to share. If it's okay."
Lena could feel Kara's breath on her, a little shaky, and she smiled. Shifting a bit, Lena paused.
"Only if you let me step on you."
Kara's whole body flushed.
"Wh-What?"
The CEO couldn't help the fond smile she had for the reporter. Repositioning herself, Lena righted herself and stepped on Kara's feet, so now they were face to face. Even with the slight breeze around them, she felt safe and warm, Kara's body heat actively ramped up around her. The blonde's cheeks were red, and she shakily grinned as she pulled out her phone, Lena's hands seeking to hold onto Kara's shoulders.
"First met her on the west side of Cali Only took one look and girl you had me"
Lena could feel the harsh tremble of steel as Kara wrapped an arm around her waist, eyes bright and open as she gazes at Lena. They're so high up above everything that they're the only one that exists, and the brunette forgets that once upon a time she's ever been afraid of heights. She had been afraid of a lot of things before Kara, and even due to Kara, but never of Kara. She doesn't recognize the song, but she leans into the warmth of the blonde, bravely listening to what Kara wants her to hear.
"Driving down the Hollywood Hills through the Valley Coastline and even cruising Malibu"
A rumble happens, and suddenly Lena is listening to the silky croon of Kara Danvers singing to her so high up in the air, in front of the full moon and glowing from a soft determination as she holds her.
"There's nothing like that shotgun view Arm out the window, surfing old school"
On a whim Lena lets go of Kara's shoulders and spreads her arms out. She's painfully thinking about the Titanic, but Kara smiles as she sings and the superhero does a slow twirl in the air with Lena, slowly reaching out with her own wingspan and supporting Lena's hands, gently pressing their palms together as their fingers intertwine. Lena is watching as Kara's pupils grow, her body radiating an intense heat, and she presses closer, smiling as she listens to the blonde serenade her.
"Sunflowers black and yellow all over you One hand on the wheel the other holding you"
She's on fire. Her own heart is beating hard in relation to Kara and it's Kara who's in front of her who has always been there, who has been her anchor and her wings and her happiness. Slowly the blonde trails her hands back over Lena's forearms, her elbows, her back, holding her close and slowly twirling them, and it's Lena who reaches up and gently slides her hands into Kara's hair, tangling through and gently taking the back of Kara's neck and holding her. It's so intimate, she's wanted this for so long, and Lena knows, she's always known.
"Took a shot and knew I couldn't miss When you lean if for that first~ slow~ kiss~"
The song continues as Lena's heart pounds, and she can feel Kara steadfastly holding her, will always hold her, and she leans in, letting herself stop as she slowly closes her eyes and trusts in the moment and in Kara Zor-El.
Kara leans in.
"This is the moment that I reminisce. No matter where we are I can't help but remember~"
The song continues on perfectly, and Lena sighs against Kara, tasting her smile and feeling the fullness of her heart finally share the peace of perfection. She's surrounded by Kara, and for once, Lena is enough, has always been enough.
"I know you were the one for me~"
It's sweet. The present moment is so sweet and Lena holds Kara close, batting her eyes open and looking into vibrant blue. Kara's face is split into the largest smile she's ever seen her wear, and she's so beautiful, and Lena tells her, tells her how grateful and thankful and how much Kara means to her, and Lena can feel the purity of this moment as Kara holds her close and they spend countless other more moments just like this.

Happy Birthday Lena Luthor! 🎂
I was disappointed to find that there is not one single edit of the song "You're on your own, kid" with Lena Luthor in mind. (I later found a few in tiktok, but that's not important shh).
So, surprisingly enough, I was driven to make one myself. This is my first time doing an edit in this form, but I have to say I'm quite proud of how it turned out.
Here I give you something you never asked for lmao.
