Paul Resika, “Maison Baisse,” from his Houses in Provence series, 1980. Resika is one of the last living students of Hans Hoffman. His landscapes, particularly, his later landscapes such as this one “have become progressively more saturated in color, taking them out of the observed world and into the dream-like world of a Fauvist Arcadia.” They would seem to have nothing to do with the teachings of Hoffman. Yet that would be incorrect. His work is an exquisite rendering of relationships, quasi-abstract geometric shapes and high-pitched color. For those with a love of true painting by someone with the history of art at his fingertips, there has been no one like Paul Resika. Now a new book with 200 of his works pictured is causing a long-overdue appraisal of the AMERICAN master versed in 20th century art theory (namely Hoffman) but drawing on the entire Western tradition back to the Renaissance. This week the Spectator UK has published an appreciation of Resika.
