It was a regular occurrence that Sami would drag you with him to pubs with his band, you loved that he wanted to spend time with you, if even if it was with his bandmates. You giggled softly, he was such a teddy bear, even in his sleep. Your right cheek pressed against his bare chest, you started to get sleepy, your eyes struggling to stay open. Just a few short seconds later, Sami let out a little moan, your eyes shot open.

well there goes all chances of sleeping, you thought to yourself. You moved to your other side, your ass pressed up against Sami. His hand went to your hip. You shifted a little bit, trying to get as close to Sami as possible. You soon realized he was hard, his sleepy form pulling you close against him.

You stared at the wall, wide-eyed. Sami face pressed against your back, his lips pressed against the nape of your neck, you shivered.

"Sami?" You called out again, your nails scratching lightly at his arm.

"Mmm," He mumbled. "Yes love"

"Are you uhm," you paused, thankful that it was dark in the room, otherwise he would more than likely notice your blush. "Having issues?"

"Possibly," His soft voice spoke out. "Help me?"

You turned your face to see his, the moon light provided just enough light for you to see his blue eyes stare at yours lovingly. You planted a soft kiss to his lips before lightly pushing him onto his back. You worked your way down his body, leaving little kisses and bite marks here and there. You pressed your soft, tiny fingers to his bulge, a tent in his boxers. You looked up at him, his eyes screwed shut, his chest heaving up and down somewhat quickly.

Slipknot’s second proper album, Iowa, was the most eagerly-awaited rock record of 2001, and both critics and fans of the masked nine-man band from Des Moines weren’t surprised when it crashed straight into the charts at the top spot in early September. But to anyone not familiar with the crushing music of this most uncompromising of groups, the sudden glut of media appearances that followed this triumph might seem strange, to say the least. After all, these are people who urinate on stage, offer fans the chance to inhale from rectally-inserted tubes and regularly vomit onto their audiences.

Despite the band’s fearsome reputation, drummer Joey Jordison was on relaxed form as he chatted to RC from his Mid-Western home. In fact, he was willing to provide an opinion on most subjects — so RC fed him a topic, and off he went. If only all interviews were this easy, eh?

A Night In With The Knot

Imagine you’ve invited us to a party round at your house. What tunes would you play for us? If I’m having a party I don’t really play much metal — because the chicks get more naked if you play something light. Old Bee Gees, or Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall, they’re all good party albums

I read once that you’re into the Cars and Fleetwood Mac. Oh, yeah. The Cars — I really like their Candy-O record, man, it was one of those records that really broke New Wave in America. They were one of the first bands to use the fuckin’ New Wave keyboards in their music, man.

The one-finger thing? Yeah, yeah, yeah, totally! Like ‘Let’s Go’ with that cheesy line that they use, but it’s so infectious. We played it before a show one time — we cranked that entire song through the PA right before we hit the stage. The kids were so fuckin’ loud and pissed off! They thought we were gonna cut the cong but we played the whole damn thing (laughing), just to irritate them.

What about a bit of dance or hip-hop? I like the new Ludicrous record. And chicks often get naked when we play that new Nelly CD for some reason (laughs). I also like the Wu-Tang Clan and Ol’ Dirth Bastard’s solo stuff, and of course old Public Enemy, and the old NWA stuff. I’m much more into the old school — I don’t listen to any of that current shit.

Did you ever get into any grunge at all? For a little bit, although I was pretty strictly devoted to metal. I really can’t stand Pearl Jam though — I’ve never been a fan of them. Alice In Chains was always a metal band in hiding, with a grunge umbrella. Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger was phenomenal, too.

What about Faith No More? A band I still devote a lot of respect to. Faith No More really turned things around for me — The Real Thing really shaped my awareness of musical styles and using them tastefully. Mike Patton is probably the most talented musician and visionary I’ve ever heard in my life.

Most people might also be surprised to hear that I’m really into glam shit too, in my other band, the Rejects (chuckles).

What — Bolan and Bowie? More like the New York Dolls and Hanoi Rocks, but it’s all good music.

Do you dress up in the appropriate manner on stage? Make-up, lipstick? Yeah, we do. It depends on the mood. But like the famous song said, though, just because I wear make-up doesn’t mean that I can’t kick your ass!

The morning after the party, what mellow tunes would you play for us? Let me check my current crop of albums. I’d probably actually wake you up with some Amen. ‘We came here to fuck you!’ That rules, dude. I love that band.

An unlikely pairing: (above) the Cars, whose ‘cheesy’ synth lines do it for Joey, and (below) the Bee Gees, for whom ‘the chicks get naked’, dude.

Gloom And Doom

The murky depths of extreme metal explored…

The introduction of Iowa’s first song, ‘People = Shit’, is pure Morbid Angel. Fuck yeah! If you’re gonna pay tribute to something, pay it to a band that kicks ass. My favourite Morbid work is Blessed Are The Sick — I think it’s untouchable.

Altars Of Madness was really cool, too. Fuck, that’s old school, man, that’s going back. I think they really came into their own around the time of Domination, when they started using the seven-string guitars.

What other metal bands are you into? I also really like Raging Speedhorn, and I gotta say Immortal’s Damned In Black is one of the finest black metal releases ever.

I thought In The Heart Of Winter was better. Yes, that fucker too — all Immortal is great. They’re one of the prime black metal bands of all time.

Have you got Slayer’s new album, God Hates Us All? Yes — it’s phenomenal.

‘Payback’ is a great song. (sings line from song) Payback, you bitch motherfucker! (sniggers)

Do you like Nile? I love Nile. Black Seeds Of Vengeance — I love fuckin’ Nile! They rule, man.

It’s a good time to be into metal, isn’t it? Look at it this way. Metal always stays here, it’ll never go away, because of the legions of devoted fans, man, they never go anywhere. They are always fucking gonna be there. The music will never go away. It’s been tested time and time again.

On the other hand, cheesy pop like Britney Spears and N’Sync has got a lot stronger at the same time, don’t you think? That’s very true, it’s a good point. Those bands are really big sellers for their labels. They’re all geared towards MTV; then MTV is geared to the kids; the kids bitch at their parents constantly, and then they go out and buy the record.

Sometimes these kids don’t know any better, they don’t know you can go out and get into the underground tape-trading scene, because they’re fed that shit over fuckin’ television. Which is a drug in its fuckin’ self.

We wanna turn these kids on. A lot of them have heard Korn and Limp Bizkit, but they’ve never heard a blastbeat. It’s great that we can turn them on to the underground — like a kid might never have heard of Morbid Angel, and might think that I’m the first guy to ever do a blastbeat and double bass. Which isn’t true.

Is it strange when Slipknot are included in the same nu-metal category as bands like Limp Bizkit and Korn? No. I can’t bitch about it because we are in that nu-metal group. We do have elements of the nu-metal sound, but the fact is, you can tell we come from a place that is more genuine and way more old-school than that.

Reasons to be angry

At the Ozzfest, Corey (Taylor, Slipknot singer) said ‘We’re going to kill everyone in the rock music industry’. Is the relationship between the band and the business really so bad? He’s always talking about that. A lot of the press — obviously not you, because you know what you’re talking about — when we were done with our first record, they said that there was no way we could top it, and were already slagging the second record. And then there’s the fuckin’ leeches that fuckin’ steal money, and the people that misquote you, and people that start fuckin’ bad rumours — and before you know it there’s a whole new list of problems that come with fame.

I’ll gladly take those problems because this is what I’ve wanted since I was five years old, but (getting annoyed) it doesn’t mean that it fucking doesn’t fucking totally fucking goad men, and totally fucking brings me to a fucking boiling point … (tails off in incoherent rage, then takes a deep breath and calms down). So a lot of those things came out, and we had a lot of personal issues when we were on the road. And we;re doing non-stop shows, so every day there’s something going on.

Didn’t you go drinking a lot with Casey Chaos when you were on tour together? Yeah, we do these drinking matches. I always lose. I got him one time, though. It took him a while, but he finally got fucked up and fell down the back of this bus — and Casey Chaos never pukes, ever, but he threw up this time.

I sobered up really quickly after I pissed myself in my bunk, and I came back out and I’m like, I’m ready to go again! But he had to go to bed. I may have fallen down first, but I came back for the second round. That’s been the only time.

Can you still get up and play the drums when you’ve got a sickening hangover? Oh, absolutely, dude. I’ve done it a million times. I’m not necessarily proud of it. But when the mask goes on and I fuckin’ slip into the fuckin’ boiler suit, something just happens to me, man. Everything goes away, and it’s all about us and those kids for that hour.

The Past

The bad old days…

Do you ever listen to Slipknot’s demo album, Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat? I never ever listen to it. I’m very proud of where we come from, man, and I’ll never forget where we come from, but … that was a totally different band back then, you know, and it’s not the same.

Did you know that people are paying over £150 in this country for original copies of MFKR, if they can find them? (shocked) Christ almighty. God damn, man … they must really like the band.

It’s a lot of money to pay for someone’s demo. Or do you regard the album as more than just a demo? It’s kind of a glorified demo. It’s glorified in that it sounds really good for a demo — it’s produced really well. But there’s only six people on that record, Corey’s not the lead singer, the guitar players are different — you know, the only original members are me, Shawn and Paul on that.

The first Knot guitarist, Donnie Steele, famously left the band after a religious conversion. Yes. He was like, I found God and this band is not for me.

Even though he’d been in Anal Blast and Body Pit beforehand — two extreme grindcore bands? I guess not. He really wasn’t down with the mask thing either — when it came up he was like, I can’t do that. So I thought, hmm, OK, you’re probably not gonna work out.

Then there was Cuddles … (yawns) Yes … … but maybe I won’t go into that? Don’t. We never talk about that guy (drummer Cuddles, a member of the band from 1997-8, is alleged to be suing Slipknot at the time of writing).

The Future

What lies ahead

You once said that Slipknot is just too intense a band to survive more than a couple of albums. I get asked about that in every interview I do. But it’s cool, because it’s the truth. I think if the band broke up right now — you can call this ego, call it what you want — we might even have some kind of legendary status.

You mean, if you stopped at the peak of your form, before it got stale? Yes, like the Sex Pistols did. They did it right, man, they didn’t fuckin’ let themselves become parodies. And that’s what we plan to do with this band, once I know it’s not working. Because of all the hurt in the band, and the fact that there’s nine of us, I think if it went on too long, it would become a parody, man.

Will your records keep getting heavier and heavier, as they have so far? Well, lots of bands say their next record is gonna be the heaviest one ever, but they’re full of shit. They just say this so their fans will go out and buy it. But I can’t do that to my fans, man, because they’re the ones that got me here, y’know.

Bach Ma Temple, Hanoi

Bach Ma, a Folk religion Temple is one of the four guardian temples of Thang Long (present day Hanoi).

The temple, constructed in the 9th century, is dedicated to Long Do, a Folk religion deity. Legend has it that Long Do overpowered witchcraft the Chinese are purported to have used during their rule to subjugate the Vietnamese.

According to lore, this deity appeared in the dreams of Emperor Ly Thai To informing him to relocate his capital to a location guided by a white horse. The horse tracks led the Emperor to Thang Long (present day Hanoi), where he built his new Capital. 

To commemorate the deity’s support, the emperor moved the Long Do temple to the current location to be a guardian of the East and changed the name of the temple to Bach Ma (White Horse in Vietnamese).

Ly Thai To, the founding emperor of Ly dynasty (1009–1225) and the third emperor of Vietnam, post-independence from the Chinese in 939, unified the country under a centralized administration.  The country then was known as Dai Viet, the then-name of Vietnamese Kingdom confined to the northern parts along the Red River. 

Emperor Ly Thai Lo, to guard his city against malevolent spirits, built a guardian temple, at each of the four cardinal points surrounding the city.  Bach Ma Temple is intended to guard against the malevolent spirits invading from the east.

It was very common in many S.E. Asian countries for the kings and emperors to build at each of the four cardinal points surrounding the city a temple, considered sacred, to honor spirits and deities who would guard his city and its inhabitants against malevolent spirits.

The shrine of the white horse that led the emperor to where to locate the guardian temple. During the Tet week celebrations, the locals visit the Bach Ma temple to pray and pay homage to the white horse.

So, what is Folk Religion?

Since ancient times Folk religions (or indigenous religions), associated with a particular group of people, ethnicity or tribe, have consisted of belief in fertility, worship of nature and spirits, and worship of man. Examples of folk religions include African traditional religions, Chinese folk religions, Native American religions and Australian aboriginal religions.

Folk religions often have no formal creeds or sacred texts.  Gods (or Deities), sometimes numerous, if they do exist, can be ancient national heroes; imagined persons told in tales; spirits, often residing in nature (rivers, mountains, rocks); or even kind-hearted people.  Often shamans act as an intermediary between a person seeking benevolence and the deities.  Some of Folk religions' places of worship (houses of worship if at all they exist, or shrines at home) may also contain icons of other later-day religions.

He starts looking through all your vinyls and the first Queen album he sees is Queen II and you put it on and he is amazed by the contrast of White Queen and The March of the Black Queen

Fast forward a couple weeks and you start noticing Dreams hair is getting longer, his eyeliner is more prominent, and he puts a record on before settling down with you. Razzle happens to be a complete hopeless romantic and he lays eyes on the reader when they had been working at this diner that the rest of the band goes to often after their shows. (The band was just getting started) He wants to ask the reader out but can’t find the right words, it doesn’t help that his band mates tease him about his little crush. Even at one point one of his band mate threatened that he would ask the reader out of Razzle didn’t. This pushes Razzle to ask them out.

Your small handheld radio rattled out the newest Fleetwood Mac song as you walked along the sidewalk, basking in the bright summer air. It seemed the sun had finally come to stay awhile in England and you were quite pleased to be in its company.

You smiled as you looked further down the road and saw your friend Razzle waiting for you in your agreed meeting spot. His hair fluttered in the warm breeze as he leaned against the light post, his hands shoved deep into his trouser pockets. Your feet naturally quickened their pace as you walked over to greet him. When Razzle picked up his head and finally caught sight of you, his face broke out into a wide grin.

“You made it,” he said to you once you had finally reached him.

“Don’t I always?” you replied, nudging his shoulder with your own as the pair of you began walking down the road.

Razzle let out a small laugh and threw his arm around your shoulders, pulling you close into his side as you walked. Briefly, you closed your eyes and simply relished in the feeling of being so close to him.

“You still listening to that hippie bullshit?” Razzle teased, ruffling your hair a bit as he did so.

You rolled your eyes and swatted at his hands.

“Fleetwood Mac is not hippie bullshit,” you said, turning up your radio just to spite him. “Stevie Nicks is a god among us mortals merely blessing us with her song.”

At this, Razzle scoffed.

“Ah, right. God among mortals. My apologies.”

You laughed.

“Besides I don’t complain when you get all starry-eyed over Sid Vicious,” you added.

“That’s different,” he said, he said with a childish huff.

“Mhm. Sure. So where are we going today anyways?” you asked.

You had been following Razzle the whole time the pair of you had been walking, trusting him to guide you to where you needed to go.

“I was thinking of taking you over to Yaverland. We could look for fossils,” Razzle suggested.

Although he spoke in such a nonchalant way, you tell by the way he gazed at you out of the corner of his eye, he was secretly waiting for your approval of the idea.

“Really?”

“Yeah,” Razzle said. “I mean, it’s a bit touristy but it could still be fun. If you’d rather do something else instead though, that’s fine by me.”

He was still looking at you, waiting to hear what you thought.

You smiled at him, reached down and took his hand. Giving it a tight squeeze, you reassured him.

“Fossil hunting sounds perfect.”

“Fossil hunting it is then,” he said.

You didn’t miss the way he blushed when you let go off his hand.

If you were being completely honest with yourself, Razzle could have suggested something like dumpster diving or bear wrestling and you still would have gone along with it just the same. Whether it was known to Razzle or not, you were completely caught under his spell. You were head over heels for the boy, and would do anything to make him happy, or even better, feel similarly towards you.

You really weren’t quite sure what to make of yours and Razzle’s relationship. The two of you had only just met a mere couple months ago. You and your family had just moved to the Isle of Wright in the spring, and you had met Razzle shortly thereafter. Right from the start of your friendship, something felt different with Razzle than it had with anyone else before. Things had just felt right. Everything seemed to fall into place. With Razzle, it felt like more than just friendship.

You just didn’t know if he felt the same.

There were moments where you felt sure there was something there something mutual, but you could never act on it. What if you were mistaken? What if all those shared jackets and cigarettes were just a sign of friendship and not something more?

“Hey, Earth to (Y/N)? You still with me?”

Your train of thoughts was derailed as Razzle waved his hand in front of your face.

“Yeah, I’m still with you. Sorry,” you replied, a bit sheepish for having been caught trapped in your thoughts. “What were you saying?”

“Just that I was going to miss these daily adventures is all,” Razzle said.

Since you and Razzle had become friends, he had made it his personal duty to show you around the Isle of Wright, taking you on daily outings to explore the island. It had been one of the best summers of your life, seeing all the island had to offer with your new favorite person by your side.

“I’m going to miss this too,” you agreed.

Once summer was over, you and Razzle would have to return to school for your final year of high school (though Razzle spoke incessantly to you about dropping out). Once school began, there would be no more time for your adventures. You’d surely be too busy with classes and homework to run around from town to town and seeing the sights.

“School is going to suck compared to this,” Razzle sighed, “but at least you’ll be there with me.”

You couldn’t have agreed more.

By the time the two of you got to Yaverland, there were plenty of people at the beach. It wasn’t surprising considering how lovely the weather was. The sun was shining, and the air was warm. Couples with their children played in the sand and plenty of people were taking their dogs out for a stroll.

You let out a deep breath as you took in the smell of the salty air around you.

“You like it?” Razzle asked, noticing you taking in your surroundings.

You nodded.

“You said there’s fossils?” you asked, curious.

“If we’re lucky,” he replied. “Sometimes you can find some laying about in the sand. I found some here once when I was a kid. I thought we could look again.”

“Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s go!” you laughed eagerly, kicking off your shoes and practically running down to the sand.

You could hear Razzle laughing behind you as he followed your lead. You raced with him all the way down to the shoreline, only stopping once your feet were splashing in the cold ocean.

“Shit!” you cursed, backing out of the cold water quickly. “It’s freezing!”

Razzle, right behind you, cursed as well, as the waves came rushing over his feet.

“There’s no way I’m going swimming today,” he said. “That water is way too cold.”

So, the two of you decided to simply walk along the shoreline instead, carrying your shoes in hand and occasionally letting the ocean wash over your toes when you were feeling brave. As you walked the two of you talked about anything and everything-  school and music and jobs and family. Razzle told you all about his punk band dreams and listened attentively when you shared your own crazy and ambitious hopes for the future. You were also sure to look for fossils as you made your way along the beach, keeping an eye out for anything that stood out in the sand.

After some time, you and Razzle came across a nice-sized rock to sit down on and take a break on your walk. You had been walking for some time now and you were both beginning to tire. You placed your radio on the rock next to you, thankful it still had battery and was still playing out your favorite station.

“Today was a good day,” you said, leaning your head over to rest on Razzle’s shoulder.

Out over the ocean, the sky was beginning to darken. Sunset was starting.

“I’m glad,” Razzle said. “I wish we had found a fossil though.”

You’d had no such luck in uncovering any evidence of dinosaurs like you’d hoped.

“That’s okay,” you said with a shrug. “We can always look again next time,” you said with a smile.

Your smile broadened as the same song from earlier began to play on the radio again. Quietly, you began to hum it under your breath.

“Is this that same song?” Razzle asked.

You nodded, surprised he remembered it.

You were both quiet for a spell as you listened to the music.

You turned to face him.

“Yeah?”

“I- I have to tell you something before this summer is over,” he stuttered out, seeming nervous all of a sudden.

“Shoot,” you told him, feigning confidence while your own heart thudded terribly with nervous hope.

“This summer- this summer has been, well, it’s meant everything to me,” he said. “I really like you (Y/N). A lot,” he said.

He looked into your eyes earnestly as he spoke.

You met his gaze.

“I like you too,” you said.

Your voice was almost a whisper as you spoke.

“I think I might love you (Y/N).”

This time you didn’t need to speak at all. You leaned forward and captured Razzle’s lips in a sweet and loving kiss. That was all the confirmation Razzle seemed to have needed because, suddenly, he was throwing his arms around you and practically pulling you on top of him, knocking you both off of the rock you had been sitting on along in the process. Your transistor radio fell into the warm sand below too but neither of you made any move to reach for it, too transfixed with the other.

“I love you too,” you told Razzle as you finally broke apart.

You were practically sitting in his lap now with his arms wrapped around your waist, keeping you steady. He grinned widely at your confession.

You giggled as Razzle began to pepper your face with more kisses as the sound of Fleetwood Mac and crashing waves surrounded you.

A/N: Sorry this took so long! I’ve been super busy the past few weeks but hopefully I’ll get back in the groove of writing soon.

     "Beach day! Beach day!" Razzle yells like a chant.

     You and the boys of Hanoi Rocks decided to hit up the beach. It's the middle of their tour in the US, and you flew out from London for the week.

     The gorgeous coastline and sweltering sun is different from the foggy London days, so how could you not have a beach day? Andy was a little pissy about the heat, but after he got set up under an umbrella on a beach chair next to Nasty he was set. 

     Michael laid on a towel and sunbathed, the blonde relishing in the persistent sun. Sami and Razzle are sitting together building a sandcastle, the dorks.

     You smile at the sight of your boyfriend, shirtless with blue swim trunks and sunglasses perched on his nose.

“Come help, Y/N!” He says, a bright smile on his lips. You get up begrudgingly, sitting down on the hot sand that immediately stuck to your skin.

You and the two boys build quite the impressive castle. A leaf for a flag sat on top and a moat that already began to soak into the sand surrounding it. You smile proudly and brush off your hands.

Razzle, always jumping from one thing right to the next, stands abruptly and grabs your hand, dragging you to the ocean. He was always like that, quick moving, not wanting to sit still for even a second. It made you a little crazy sometimes, but after a while you just found it part of his charm.

“Razzle! Come on, I don’t wanna get all wet!”

“Then why the hell do you have a swimsuit on?” He asks, a snarky tone accompanying a smirk. He drags you into the ice cold water, your body plunging into the sea when a wave washes over you.

You stand up with a wheeze, coughing up water from your lungs. Razzle, being much taller than you, barley got the tips of his hair wet by the wave.

You frown, running to him as fast as you could while submerged in water with a determined look on your face. You tackle him, you and Razzle plummet to the ocean floor.

You both come back up with a gasping breath.

“What was that for?!” He asks, shaking the wet hair from his face.

“You’re too tall! It’s not fair that the waves don’t take you down,” you say and splash him. He’s face sets into a deep frown and splashes you back, more forcefully.

This begins war.

Two, fully grown adults, splashing each other with as much water as humanly possible at each other. In fact, so obnoxiously, the surrounding people moved away.

You eventually admit defeat and swim away, making sure you get one more splash in. Razzle follows, wrapping you up in his arms and pressing kisses to your salty skin.

“Do you want to fuck with Andy?” He asks with that hell raising grin. You grin back at him.

“Of course.”

And so you and Razzle snatch up a lonely bucket by the shore and fill it water. You both wander back to where the band is camping out, Razzle holding the bucket semi-awkwardly behind his back and you walking in front of him.

Razzle sneaks behind Andy, lifting the bucket above his head. Nasty notices quickly, always more observant than his suicide twin. You put your fingers up to your lips to tell him to keep quiet, he smirks and looks away.

Razzle spills the bucket. The freezing water chilling Andy to the bone, and he jumps up. His hair sticks to his face and his white tee shirt is now completely see through. He opens his mouth, most likely to cuss you and Razzle out, but you book it before he gets a word out. Michael, Sami, and Nasty snicker at yours and Razzle’s fleeting forms.

You run all the way to the other side of the beach before collapsing to the sand. It sticks to your damp skin but you’re too out of breath and tired to care. Razzle follows, laying on his back with a ‘umph.’

The sun has begun to set, the oranges and yellows casting beautifully on the ocean. The people have mostly cleared out, peaceful quiet except from the ocean taken over the coast.

After a few moments of the silence, Razzle rolls on top of you. You groan from the weight, but his kisses distract from the lack of breathing.

His lips trail from your cheeks to your jaw to you collar bones. Occasionally he gives you a raspberry and you giggle. He never failed to make you smile.

“Have I ever told you how much I love you?” He asks. You pretend to ponder his question and make a questioning ‘hmm’ sound.

“I don’t know, maybe you’ll just have to remind me.”

“I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you.” He punctuates each declaration with a kiss. You blush wildly and hug him tightly. He sarcastically makes a strangled noise which makes you roll your eyes. How you got stuck with such a dork you’ll never know, but you’ll never regret it.
