My notes on Memrise Korean 2 - Getting from A to B, More Transport, and Is It a Car? Is It a Plane?

I finally got through all 900+ classical reviews I needed to complete on Memrise. I know Korean 1 front to back, but I realised when i was reviewing Korean 2 that I am unsure of the content I learned so far. Thus, these are my notes. Please be aware that if I am confident with the majority of vocabulary in a sentence, I don’t bother to note the new vocabulary separately. I also didn’t note the content that I am already familiar with.

Getting from A to B

그럼, 오늘 명동에 갈까요? - Should we go to Myeongdong today, then?

버스 탈까요? - Should we take the bus? 

출근시간 - the time people start work (morning rush hour)

지금 퇴근시간이에요. - Now is the evening rush hour (time people finish work)

지하철이 더 빨라요. - The tube is faster.

티머니 카드는 버스, 지하철 환승이 돼요. - With T-money card, you can transfer between the bus and the tube.

티머니 카드는 편의점에서 살 수 있어요. - You can buy a T-money card at the convenience store.

명동역은 몇 호선이에요? - Which line is Myeongdong station on?

지하철 노선도에서 확인할 수 있어요. - You can check on the tube map.

명동역은 4호선이에요. - Myeongdong station is on line 4.

서울역에서 한 번 갈아타야 해요. - You should change once at Seoul station.

이번 역은 서울역입니다. - This stop is Seoul station.

한국 지하철은 진짜 편리해요. - The Korean metro is really convenient.

TTMIK Lvl 2: Lessons 16-20

Lesson 16 : Very, A Bit, Really, Not Really, Not at All

조금 - a little / a bit / a little bit

·         조금 비싸요. - It's a little expensive.

비싸다 - to be expensive

·         조금만 주세요. - Only give me a little bit.

·         소금 조금만 주세요. - Please only give me a little bit of salt.

소금 - salt

정말 - really / truly

정말 is considered a little more formal than 진짜, but they mean almost the exact same thing

·         정말 빨라요. - It's really fast

    빨라다 - to be fast

·         정말 이상해요. - It's really strange.

·         Sample Conversation using 진짜

A : 제가 방 청소했어요.

B : 아...진짜?

A : 예, 진짜! 보고 싶어요?

아주 - very / quite

아주 is the most standard way to say very in written form, but it is not used often in spoken Korean. 정말 or 진짜 is used instead.

·         아주 맛있어요. - It's very delicious.

·         아주 멀어요. - Its very far away.

멀다 - to be far

별로 - not really / not particularly

별로 is always used in negative sentences, regardless of whether the verb following has a positive or negative meaning. Rather than just using 별로, 안 must be used to make the sentence a negative. Using 별로 allows the listener to guess the sentence will end with a negative form.

·         별로 안 비싸요. - It's not so expensive.

·         별로 재미없어요. - It's not that interesting.

·         별로 안 나빠요. - It's not that bad.

    나빠다 - to be bad

전혀 - not at all

In spoken Korean, 하나도 is used more often than 전혀.

·         전혀 안 바빠요. - I'm not busy at all.

    바빠다 - to be busy

·         전혀 안 더워요. - It's not hot at all.

    덥다 - to be hot

 Lesson 17 : Can, Cannot

-(으)ᄅᅠ 수 있다 - conjunction to express that you can do something

·         볼 수 있다 - can see

·         먹 을 수 있다 - can eat

·         운전할 수 있어요? - Can you drive?

·         일본어 할 수 있어요? - Can you speak Japanese?

·         이거 읽을 수 있어요? - Can you read this?

-(으)ᄅᅠ 수 없다 - conjunction to express that you cannot do something

·         잘 수 없다 - can't sleep

·         잡을 수 없다 - can't catch

못 - used before a verb to express "cannot"

        In spoken Korean, 못 is used more commonly to express cannot.

·         못 읽어요. - I can't read it.

·         지금 못 만나요. - I can't meet you now.

 Lesson 18 : To be good / poor at...

잘하다 - to do (object) well / to be good at (object)

못하다 - to do (object) poorly / to be bad at (object)

Saying 못 하다  with a pause gives the phrase the meaning of being unable to do something.

Saying 잘 못하다 softens the meaning. It literally means that you cannot do something well. However, be careful because if you forget the pause, it changes the nuance to doing something the wrong way instead. Additionally, 잘못하다 means "to make a mistake".

노래를 잘하다 - to sing well

요리를 못하다 - to cook poorly

수영을 잘 못하다 - cannot swim well

잘 달리다 - to run well

잘 쓰다 - to write well

저는 노래를 잘 못해요. - I cannot sing well.

제 친구는 수영을 잘해요. - My friend is good at swimming.

저는 퍼즐을 잘 풀어요. - I am good at solving puzzles.

저는 글씨를 잘 못 써요. - My handwriting is not good.

매운 거 잘 먹어요? - Are you good at eating spicy food?

 Lesson 19 : Making verbs into nouns

-는 것 - general way of turning a verb into a noun

This can take many different meanings: "doing" something, the act of "doing" something, the thing which one "does", what one "does", the fact that one is "doing" or "does" something.

보는 것 - the act of seeing / the thing that you see

가는 것 - the act of going

먹는 것 - the act of eating / the thing that you eat

먹은 것 - what you ate

먹을 것 - what you will eat

사는 것 - the act of buying / the thing that you buy

산 것 - what you bought

살 것 - what you will buy

지금 듣는 것은 노래예요. - What I'm listening to now is a song.

지금 듣는 거는 노래예요. - What I'm listening to now is a song.

오늘 만나는 거 알아요? - Do you know that we are meeting today?

매운 거 잘 먹어요? - Are you good at eating spicy foods?

제 취미는 영화 보는 거예요. - My hobby is watching movies.

요즘 공부하는 거는 뭐예요? - What is it that you're studying these days?

저는 친구랑 수다따는 거를 좋아해요. - I like chit-chatting with my friends.

 Lesson 20 : Have to, Should, Must

-아/어/여 + -야되다 - conjunction for have to/should

-아/어/여 + -야하다 - conjunction for have to/should

자야 되다 - should sleep / have to sleep

자야 하다 - should sleep / have to sleep

써야 되다 - should write / have to write

써야 하다 - should write / have to write

집에 가야 돼요. - I have to go home.

저는 뭐 해야 돼요? - What should I do?

언제까지 여기에 있어야 돼요? - Until when should I be here?

누구한테 줘야 돼요? - Who should I give this to?

어디에서 사야 돼요? - Where should I buy it?
