Thanks to people gifting me a ton of photos, click the link above to access a pictorial spread of the original Los Angeles cast of Jesus Christ Superstar in the summer of 1972, at the (sadly late) Universal Amphitheater on the Universal Studios backlot in California. To be clear: this is a little album of every picture we've ever been able to scrounge up from the two weeks that Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson were in the L.A. cast before they ran off to Israel to make a certain film.

If nothing else, it just goes to show that when you let Tom O'Horgan cook, to use current terminology, he comes up with something less gonzo and more down-to-earth than an avant-garde treatise on futuristic insects play-acting a version of an earlier primitive civilization's myth. (Yeah, that's what the OBC's wild designs were about. I'll explain more someday.)

Background on the Location

Let's start with the venue: we find ourselves at a 3,800-ish-seat open-air Amphitheater on the Universal Studios backlot, built as a daytime arena where Studio Tour patrons could watch a western-themed stunt show and shootout. As the story goes, someone, likely a young person who'd been to concerts in unusual places, wondered aloud whether they could use it as an event space at night. As a test, they ran some old movies (Marx Brothers and so forth), passed out free popcorn and peanuts, and discovered that even without the tour, people would come, park their carcasses, and watch a show. Prime opportunity to make money -- now they just needed an event that would pull crowds.

Picking JCS was sort of an in-house deal. The parent company of Universal was MCA, which then owned a stake in the show along with the Robert Stigwood Organisation. A fully staged version had yet to play the Coast, though successful concert tours had cleaned up at the Hollywood Bowl and across the country. So they booked a month-long run and hoped for the best. Thanks to casting hi-jinks in the Broadway production (again, fodder for another post), Ted Neeley was set to play the leading role of Jesus, and Carl Anderson would co-star as Judas.

Background on the Staging and Design

My guess: O'Horgan knew by now that ALW and TR had toed the party line, but were generally not interested in what he did back in the Big Apple, so a square-one rethink was the order of the day. Moreover, the glitterati of Hollywood was likely to fill these seats at some point. He couldn't do some avant-garde-a-clue (as George Harrison would put it) theater crap in Studio City. So he went with something simpler, more... basic -- the Bible writ large for a comic book generation and an arena audience. (Perhaps this was why Tom felt the focus had to be more on Jesus, moving intermission to follow "Gethsemane" instead of "Blood Money," a choice that, to his credit, was frequently echoed thereafter in UK productions.)

The scenery was arena-level simple: the set consisted of three stone outcroppings backed by an 80-foot-tall (!) cross draped in cloth. On closer examination, the two small stone groups near the sides of the stage were gigantic hands, palm up, with fingers reaching for the sky, and the large stone structure in the middle was Jesus' face. (Per audience reports, when Judas died, he stood in stone-Jesus' mouth, which flamed bright red, and descended into hell screaming, "You have murdered me!")

Herod was wheeled onto the stage in a contraption made out of nude alabaster mannequins, whose arms raised on cue to allow the white-suited Herod his entrance (perhaps the most '70s thing ever). Pilate, almost a Goth King straight out of Conan the Barbarian or Flash Gordon, reigned from a throne of human skulls that was frantically whipped around the stage while he laughed maniacally. For the crucifixion, Jesus and his disciples climbed the uncloaked cross, and as Jesus got into position, the disciples made a halo out of their open hands surrounding his head that glowed in the spotlights. As they played "John 19:41," the cross slowly moved back from the stage until it disappeared into the darkness by the end of the song.

There was still a lot of "go big or go home" about it, in true Tom fashion. As the artist's rendering of the crucifixion on the Playbill's title page or in the mail-order ticket ad (seriously, see link) attests, when Norman Jewison quoted classic art, it was a simple Da Vinci. Tom O'Horgan, on the other hand, went for a straight-up, balls-to-the-wall, extravagant take on Gustave Doré. (Compare that rendering to "Souls of Warriors of the Faith Form a Cross.")

All things considered, it was sort of a forerunner of "pandering JCS" like the A.D. and Farewell Tours, but it had balls compared to what ALW considers an arena tour-worthy production.

Reception

Maybe because it was set up to be a crowd-pleaser instead of playing with weirdness for a supposedly sophisticated audience on someone else's dime, the L.A. production was a massive hit with both critics and audiences compared to Broadway. During the day, it was the Wild West show; at night, it was JCS, frequently filling the venue to 98% capacity. It kept extending and ultimately ran twelve weeks rather than four (of which Ted and Carl, as previously mentioned, played two before shipping off to the Holy Land) until cold weather forced its closure that September.

(Recalled Ted in an interview circa 1993, when the A.D. Tour returned to the now-enclosed Amphitheater, "We used to freeze our buns off with those Santa Anas whipping around. Especially me when I was in that loincloth, hanging up on that huge cross." Not that the image didn't have a huge effect. To quote Amphitheater treasurer Maggie Magennis, who "saw it at least four or five times a week" when it opened, "The most exciting part was at the end. Teddy was up on the cross. We were open air then, and you could see the lights of the Valley. There was something really awesome about the fact that he represented something so spiritual, and yet the temporal aspect of the lights twinkling down below was there.")

My Two Cents

If I had an unlimited budget, I'd give it some twists of the '92 Oz tour and bring this exact thing back. That's what tours arenas and sells tickets, not "Occupy Jerusalem." Who knows? Maybe someday someone will be crazy enough to give me that kind of free rein...

Sigils: A How to Guide

What are Sigils

A Sigil is a type of symbol used in ritual magic. The term Sigil usually has referred to a kind of pictorial mark or symbol that has magic power associated with it and is a representation of the creator's desired outcome.

Sigils have been around since the dawn of time. The first humans created Sigils in caves, and many different religions have some form of a symbol that represents the religion and its power.

Sigils used to be mainly associated with the summoning of Angels and Demons. Today Sigils are created to accomplish the practitioner's intent or will.  

The current use of Sigils was discovered by Austin Osman Spare, an English artist, and occultist. He accomplished this in the early 19th century.

Today's Sigils are extremely powerful and should be a cornerstone of any magic practitioners' spells. They are relatively easy to cast and have the flexibility to be used in many different situations.

How to Make Sigils

You will need a piece of paper, something to write with, and a statement of intent. Making Sigils is one of the least ingredient-heavy forms of magic you will encounter. This is one of the many reasons why Sigils are so beginner witch friendly.

The first step you will need to take to create a Sigil is to make a Statement of Intent. A Statement of Intent means what do you hope or want this spell to do.

Let's say we are writing a statement of intent for a Protection Sigil for our safety in our home. We could write something like this "It is my will to be safe and secure in my home."  When you write a statement of intent, it is best to use statement phrases that begin with "I wish" or "It is my will."

Another example of a statement of intent could be, "I wish John Smith and his energy to never come near me, my home, or my school again, so mote it be." In this example, we made a statement of intent for a Banishing Sigil.

Once you know what you want your spell to accomplish, write out your statement of intent, the next step is to cross out all of the repeating letters. Let's practice with the first statement of intent example, "It is my will to be safe and secure in my home."

Now that you crossed off all of the repeating letters, you should have W, B, F, D, C, U, and R, left.  We will now be rearranging of how our letters look to design our Sigil. You want your Sigil disguised, no one should be able to figure out what your statement of intent is, or it will lose its magic.

Here is an example of how you could change the U and R and how you can draw them together.

As you can see, I have taken apart points of the letters. You can do this, and you can also curve lines and change shapes. Do what feels right. Allow your subconscious to take over when you are disguising your Sigil. If it is obvious what the letters are, redo it until you no longer know what letters you used to create your Sigil with.

Now you know what you want your Sigil to accomplish, and you have written out your statement of intent. You have crossed out all of the repeating letters and designed your Sigil. Now what? You want to charge your Sigil to give it power.

How to Activate Sigils

There are many different ways to activate a Sigil, and everyone has a preference. Some witches will use the same method over and over again. I recommend against this. Depending on the intent of the Sigil will usually determine how I will charge it. I will admit my preferred method is to use personal energy. I find this to be the most effective for many of my spells.

Here are some methods of how you can charge your Sigil and which way might work best for the spell. The first four examples will be of the elements.

Activate your Sigil with the Fire element:

Draw it on paper (or something safe to burn) and burn it. Collect the ashes and take them to an open field. Toss the ashes into the air and let them blow away.

Carve it into a candle, light it, and let the sigil melt away. Collect the wax after letting the candle burn down and bury the remaining wax into the earth.

Charging with the Fire element might work best with these intentions: passion, desire, love, romance, protection, banishing, energy, inspiration, motivation, competition, athleticism, strength, empowerment, success, leadership, courage, bravery, anger, power, destruction, and purification.

Activate your Sigil with the Water element:

Draw it on something soluble and dissolve it in water.

Draw it on a rock (or something non-soluble) and place it in running water.

Charging with the Water element might work best with these intentions: change, adaptability, intuition, maturity, rebirth, renewal, mental health, emotions, dreams, sleep, psychic powers, travel, cleansing, beauty, appearance, and healing.

Activate your Sigil with the Air element:

Draw it on wind chimes and hang them up.

Draw it on a balloon, blow the balloon up, and release it.

Charging with the Air element might work best with these intentions: speech, eloquence, communication, intellect, memory, knowledge, information, education, school, song, music, mental power, divination, spirituality, and happiness.

Activate your Sigil with the Earth element

Draw it on something biodegradable and bury it.

Draw it in the dirt somewhere that the weather will wear away the Sigil.

Charging with the Earth element might work best with these intentions: grounding, centering, nature, growth, birth, fertility, health, the physical body, prosperity, money, savings, career, job, employment, business, protection, home, family, trust, stability, reliability, practicality, and strength.

Activate your Sigil with the Personal Energy method:

(Touch) Imagine your energy flowing through your body like blood. Imagine that energy starting to flow and gather in your hand. Touch the Sigil, keep the intent in your mind, and imagine all of that energy flowing through your hand into the Sigil. Let go of the Sigil to cut off the energy flow.

(Breathe) Take deep, purposeful breathes. With each inhale, imagine energy flowing into your lungs with the air. Each breath gathers more and more energy, pooling in your lungs. When you feel ready, take one last deep breath and hold it. Bring the intent of the Sigil to the forefront of your mind and exhale that pool of energy onto the Sigil.

Charging with the Personal Energy method might work best with these intentions: confidence, anti-anxiety, self-love, personal characteristics, anything intimate.

How to Use Sigils

The great thing about Sigils is you can use them in so many different situations. If you can develop the right statement of intent for that particular situation, you can use a Sigil.

Once you have charged your Sigil to use, it will depend on the purpose of the Sigil to determine what you do next—going back to our example Sigil that was for protection in our home. We would need to draw the Sigil somewhere in the house, away from where people may see it.

Here are some examples of how you can use your Sigil.

If the Sigil is to protect yourself, you can draw the Sigil on your shoes' sole. You can carve it into a piece of jewelry or a watch.

If the Sigil is for safe travels, you could draw the Sigil on paper and put it in your glove box, under your seat, or in the trunk of your car. Suppose the paper is too fragile for your liking. Another option would be to carve it on a piece of wood.

If your Sigil protects against nightmares, or maybe it's for adequate rest, try placing it somewhere in your bedroom or near your bed. You can use a marker and draw the Sigil on the tag of your pillow (make sure to keep an eye on it, so it doesn't fade away).

Portraiture

Group practical

we sat parallel to another person, we had our pencils stabbed through paper so we could not see the paper below and we had to focus only on the face and not look down, basically a blind drawing as far as looking at the drawing but we could see what the object was as we drew it.

i did the same thing again in graphite and had got a better understanding of proportion considering we could not see the drawing.

we then chose a unique image of ourselves, well mine was rather unique and we did a rough sketch to help us decide what we wanted to draw for our social realism drawing, i was quite impressed by my sketch the proportions were not half bad.

photo REALISM

i chose to just do the center of my face as i felt it would look the best in the social realism style, i then grid my drawing in 4 by 5 squares and did the same to my paper before then beginning my drawing of the outline and basic shapes in order for me to add tone and texture later on 

what is photo realism?

photo realism is a form of art where a drawing or painting looks absolutely identical to the object or photo it has been drawn from, so much so you cant tell the difference between the two, it takes time, patients and a lot of skill.

but most of the art community don’t consider this to be an art form.

Many would argue that the technical skill required to make Photorealism art can be exceeded by a decent color photocopier or a computer, thus avoid to use the word art in such context, but this discussion brings us to an analogy of photography. If photography is merely capturing an image of what is already there, where is the art in that? It is right there in the photographer’s perspective, the exact choice made by the person wielding the camera in what to capture and from which angle, moment and perspective. If a person creating a photorealistic recreation of a photograph doesn’t have that “artistic” input of a photographer, then what is artistic about the process? Some would say even those renditions are not strict interpretations of photographs, instead, they incorporate additional, often subtle, pictorial elements to create the illusion of a reality which does not actually exist, or cannot be perceived by the human eye.

In the end, as in many things in art, and life in general, the final conclusion remains behind the individual perspective

Da Vinci

Long recognised as one of the great artists of the Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci was also a pioneer in the understanding of human anatomy. Had his ground-breaking work been published, it would have transformed European knowledge of the subject.

At the outset of Leonardo’s career, anatomical illustration was in its infancy. To convey the three-dimensional form of the body and to show how it moves, Leonardo had to develop a whole range of new illustrative techniques. His challenges were in many ways the same as those faced by anatomists today, and some of Leonardo’s drawings are remarkably similar in approach to modern medical imagery, such as MRI and CT scans and 3D computer modelling.

Studies of Human Proportion

While studying Vitruvius for his work on the Milan and Pavia cathedrals, Leonardo became captivated by the ancient Roman architect’s detailed studies of human proportions and measurements. In addition, when he was measuring horses for the Sforza monument, he became interested in how they related to human proportions. Comparative anatomy appealed to his instinct for finding patterns across different subjects. So in 1490 he began measuring and drawing the proportions of the human body.

The construction lines and all of the annotation almost take away from the actual subject and become more of the focus, which was the main idea anyway It was not meant to be a work of art, but rather a manual for how to create it.

Da vinci was a polymath, a person of wide knowledge or learning. He was not only an artist but a scientist, sculpture and an architect.

Frida Kahlo

was a Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico. Inspired by the country’s popular culture, she employed a naïve folk art style to explore questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with fantasy. In addition to belonging to the post-revolutionary Mexicayotl movement, which sought to define a Mexican identity, Kahlo has been described as a surrealist or magical realist.

Kahlo’s paintings often feature root imagery, with roots growing out of her body to tie her to the ground. This reflects in a positive sense the theme of personal growth; in a negative sense of being trapped in a particular place, time and situation; and in an ambiguous sense of how memories of the past influence the present for either good and/or ill.[110] In My Grandparents and I, Kahlo painted herself as a ten-year holding a ribbon that grows from an ancient tree that bears the portraits of her grandparents and other ancestors while her left foot is a tree trunk growing out of the ground, reflecting Kahlo’s view of humanity’s unity with the earth and her own sense of unity with Mexico.[111] In Kahlo’s paintings, trees serve as symbols of hope, of strength and of a continuity that transcends generations.[112] Additionally, hair features as a symbol of growth and of the feminine in Kahlo’s paintings and in Self Portrait with Cropped Hair, Kahlo painted herself wearing a man’s suit and shorn of her long hair, which she had just cut off.[113] Kahlo holds the scissors with one hand menacingly close to her genitals, which can be interpreted as a threat to Rivera – whose frequent unfaithfulness infuriated her – and/or a threat to harm her own body like she has attacked her own hair, a sign of the way that women often project their fury against others onto themselves.[114] Moreover, the picture reflects Kahlo’s frustration not only with Rivera, but also her unease with the patriarchal values of Mexico as the scissors symbolize a malevolent sense of masculinity that threatens to “cut up” women, both metaphorically and literally.[114] In Mexico, the traditional Spanish values of machismo were widely embraced, and as a woman, Kahlo was always uncomfortable with machismo.[114]

Fulang-Chang and I depicts Kahlo with one of her pet monkeys, interpreted by many as surrogates for the children she and Diego Rivera were unable to conceive. The painting was included in the first major exhibition of her work, held at Julien Levy Gallery in New York in 1938. In the essay that accompanied the show, the Surrealist leader André Breton described Kahlo’s work as “a ribbon around a bomb” and hailed her as a self-created Surrealist painter. Although she appreciated his enthusiasm for her work, Kahlo did not agree with his assessment: “They thought I was a Surrealist but I wasn’t. I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality.” Kahlo later gave this painting to her close friend Mary Sklar, attaching a mirror to it so that, if Sklar chose, the two friends could be together.

Tai Shan Schierenberg

Tai Shan Schierenberg lives and works in London. He graduated from the Slade School of Art in 1987 and in 1989 won first prize in the National Portrait Gallery’s John Player Portrait Award. He was then commissioned to paint Sir John Mortimer for the Gallery. The National Portrait Gallery also holds his portraits of Lord Carrington from 1994, Lord Sainsbury, 2002 and most recently Seamus Heaney from 2004. Other noted commissions include Professor Stephen Hawking, Sir John Madejski and a double portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. For Schierenberg, there is an emotional charge that comes from the different textures and densities, and ultimately the light conditions, that occur in a place at a certain time. He describes his process in 2010: Painting and painting and painting, endlessly exploring ideas in paint on canvas, always painting my way. Finding that over time I can’t see the trees for the paint. Sometimes its good to try a new way, a different path, expose oneself to the vagaries of chance - and see the trees again.

Before he finishes a commission, Tai-Shan Schierenberg usually splatters a bit of paint in the corner of the portrait. It’s not a stylistic move – the brushstrokes in his paintings are fluid but the images themselves are representative – but rather one which gives the subject something to complain about.

in the image above you can clearly see the texture and markings on the canvas, the artist uses oil paint on canvas and applies it using a pallet knife and a large brush, making various large strokes in the work. this gives a rough texture and edge to the piece.

These instinctive visual images refuse to betray the plasticity of the medium. Unlike Freud, Schierenberg sees paint simultaneously as flesh. It is exactly this technique that establishes the major paradoxes characteristic of his work. It is both abstract and realist, edgy and sensitive, grand and inconclusive, violent and melancholic, physically intense and aesthetically detache

Lucian Freud

was influenced by surrealism, but by the early 1950s his often stark and alienated paintings tended towards realism. Freud was an intensely private and guarded man, and his paintings, completed over a 60-year career, are mostly of friends and family. They are generally somber and thickly impastoed, often set in unsettling interiors and city scapes. The works are noted for their psychological penetration and often discomforting examination of the relationship between artist and model. Freud worked from life studies, and was known for asking for extended and punishing sittings from his models.

one of my chosen artists, tai shan sheirenberg seems to be heavily influenced by the style of lucian freud yet he made his own style, they both use the same meduims, oil on canvas also.

Interpreting line

The Visual Element of Line is the foundation of all drawing. It is the first and most versatile of the visual elements. Line in an artwork can be used in many different ways. It can be used to suggest shape, pattern, form, structure, growth, depth, distance, rhythm, movement and a range of emotions.

We have a psychological response to different types of lines:

Curved lines suggest comfort and ease

Horizontal lines suggest distance and calm

Vertical lines suggest height and strength

Jagged lines suggest turmoil and anxiety

The way we draw a line can convey different expressive qualities:

Freehand lines can express the personal energy and mood of the artist

Mechanical lines can express a rigid control

Continuous lines can lead the eye in certain directions

Broken lines can express the ephemeral or the insubstantial

Thick lines can express strength

Thin lines can express delicacy

A.K.A. How to Go from No Tarot Knowledge to a Functioning Understanding in a Short Amount of Time

Tarot can often seem like a daunting skill to learn, with so many cards to learn the meanings of, spreads to create, imagery to get used to, etc. This is a guide meant to get you from absolute 0 to a basic ability to use Tarot in a short amount of time - not because you need to rush, but because building up a working basis for your skill is vital before you can move on to truly mastering it, plus I know the impatience to be able to read Tarot very well. This was largely my technique to learning Tarot, plus a few corrections I’ve discovered in hindsight. Be warned, this involves a lot of reading and a decent amount of memorisation. 

Choose your first deck wisely. I would strongly recommend either Rider Waite or something closely based on Ride Waite, largely because the imagery is clear and often recognisable, and so much of what you’ll read is based on that deck. You can generally pick up Rider Waite cheaply at your local book shop or witchy shop if you have one, or here. If the original deck really isn’t for you, here are some decks heavily inspired by Rider Waite. I would also really recommend Everyday Tarot for a more modern take, plus the cards are smaller and easier to handle

Get familiar with the deck and learn to shuffle. By this, I genuinely mean just get familiar with the feel of the deck in your hands, before you even start on the divination side of things. If it’s a full-sized deck, they might feel a bit weird, since the cards are much bigger than a regular deck of cards. Shuffling is also vital, so find a technique that works for you. For some people, shuffling like a regular deck of cards works best, or you can repeatedly cut the deck into smaller piles before recombining it, or you could even lay them all out and pick them up in an intuitive order. Just find a technique that works for you both physically and spiritually, and practice if you need to. (x)

Learn the basic associations for the Major Arcana. Start with the 22 cards with the Major Arcana, it will make the whole process feel less intimidating. At this point, a few (maybe 2-4) key words is all you need, for upright and reversed if you choose to use reversals (you don’t have to be certain at this point!) The deck you buy should come with a guide with a succinct description of each card, and you can pull out a few key words or short phrases to use - writing them down in a notebook or on flashcards is a good idea. If you don’t have a booklet or the descriptions aren’t satisfactory for whatever reason, tarot.com has some good, simple and short descriptions here. You want to be at the point where you can draw any Major Arcana card and remember your key words and phrases

(Optional) Get familiar with the imagery of the Major Arcana. I was unsure whether I wanted to include this step, so I’m leaving it up to your judgement. I find knowing the imagery very useful in remembering the meaning of the card, and at this point if there’s just one or two images on each card that you can recognise, it’ll help with the memorisation process. You can find a dictionary of symbolism in the Rider Waite deck here, or  The Pictorial Key to the Tarot walks you through the symbolism of each card individually.

Learn the meanings of each of the suits. When you start to learn the Minor Arcana, take a slightly different approach. Start off by learning what each of the suits represents - Biddy Tarot has a particularly good page here, and there’s a more in depth page here, but here’s a general overview:

Wands: energy, motivation, initiative, fire

Cups: emotion, intuition, creativity, water

Pentacles: finances, career, material goods, earth

Swords: thoughts, words, communication, air

Learn the meanings of the numbers. Each suit has ten numbered cards, and once you know the meaning of each number and each suit, you should be able to work out the meaning of any numbered Minor Arcana Card. You can read about number meanings here, here and here, but here’s an overview.

Learn the court card meanings. Much like the numbered cards, there are consistent meanings in each of the court cards throughout the suits. You can read about those meanings here, here and here. 

Congratulations! You now have a basic understanding of Tarot card meanings. This is by no means comprehensive, but it should give you a basis from which to dive into more advanced Tarot reading. If you have any questions, please feel free to message me, and good luck!

As far as I know, there doesn't seem to be any English translations for the radio broadcasts yet. Since I'm relatively free at the moment, I decided to try translating them. This is my first time translating anything at all, so if anyone spots any errors/ have tips on how I can improve, feel free to let me know!

Our Disappearing Glaciers!

The Man on a Mission to Reveal the ‘Souls’ of Vanishing Glaciers

American adventurer Garrett Fisher flies in a ramshackle antique plane, dangling his camera out of the window to capture the beauty of glaciers before they disappear

Satellite images and the latest scientific studies may accurately inform us how quickly the world’s glaciers are melting. But Garrett Fisher’s mission is different: to reveal the “souls” of vanishing glaciers.

This, the American adventurer believes, is best achieved by flying solo over each glacier in a ramshackle antique plane and dangling his camera out of the window to capture their varied forms, textures and beauty – before they disappear forever.

Fisher, a financial consultant who is planning to devote his life to photographing glaciers, has completed his second book. Three years ago, he documented the glaciers of the Rocky Mountains. Now he’s brought his plane to Switzerland to record the glaciers of the Bernese Alps.

Satellite images “can’t replicate the stunning beauty of glaciers”, he says from his current home in Spain, from where he will be embarking on more glacial explorations this summer in his 1949 Piper PA11 plane, which he inherited from his grandfather, who had renovated it after finding it rotting in a barn in North Carolina.

Many glaciers are too inaccessible to reach on foot, or by drone, and helicopters are prohibitively expensive. According to Fisher, his plane, which has a maximum speed of 70 knots – and chugs along at barely 20 knots (23mph) when Fisher dares fly into a 50 knot headwind – uses about the same amount of fuel as a family car.

“With an aeroplane, I can ‘stand’ in a place where a human can’t stand because glaciers are just so brutally unforgiving to cross with their crevasses,” he says. “You can look down into the soul of the glacier from a close perspective.”

Fisher has spent two summers photographing the glaciers of the Bernese Alps, which include some of the most recognisable Alpine scenery, as depicted in the James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, for instance. He chooses the summer because the glaciers are visible and distinguishable from the surrounding snow. Weather conditions are also slightly more forgiving.

He has to wait for sunshine, with clouds often clinging to the glaciers, and then brave notoriously violent and unpredictable winds – as well as a lack of oxygen – to climb as high as 14,000ft in the Bernese Alps.

“It takes a long time to wait for the right kind of day. The conventional wisdom is that the wind cannot be higher than 20 knots but I’ve gone up in as much as 50. I’m a little special. At high altitudes, the wind tends not to be turbulent if you’re on the proper side of the mountain. So it’s a lot like surfing this giant wave: if you stay in the right spot, everything’s fine.”

He’s only twice been “utterly terrified”: once in Virginia at 3,000ft when his plane was turned upside down by the wind, and another time more recently near Lucerne, Switzerland, where he was “surprised” by vicious winds blowing out of the mountains.

In deep Alpine valleys, he is usually out of radio contact. If his plane got into trouble, the glaciers look like a decent emergency runway, but appearances are deceptive. “Those cavities are so large that if the engine quits and I go in one, the authorities probably wouldn’t ever find me again,” he says. “The risk is improbable, but it’s absolutely worth the risk.”

Experiencing glaciers from a small plane is “exhilarating, transcendental and spiritually elevating”, says Fisher. The images he collects are certainly spectacular. Konkordiaplatz, the meeting point for four glaciers, looks like a spectacular motorway junction of ice, snaking off through the peaks in multiple directions. One picture looks as if Fisher might be about to land on it but such is its scale he took it from 800ft up.

His pictures are taken by sticking a gloved hand out of the plane window with his wide-angle Canon digital SLR. According to Fisher, flying with one hand while taking photos with the other and looking through the camera viewfinder is not as dangerous as taking photographs while driving a car.

“I’ve actually once tried to photograph something with an SLR while driving. You’re in danger of killing yourself in four seconds – you’re 10 feet away from hitting something. In the plane, I’m going at the speed of a car and am usually 1,000ft away from the nearest obstacle. It’s a choreographed art to use what I’m seeing through the viewfinder.”

Konkordiaplatz looks colossal but Fisher’s flying is revealing the rapid melting of many glaciers. He researches each one on Google Earth but finds even recent satellite pictures can be inaccurate because by the time he reaches the glacier he often finds it has drastically shrunk or even disappeared.

Even Konkordiaplatz is 600ft shallower than its 1860 level. “It’s astonishing how much ice has been lost, almost beyond words,” says Fisher. He found another glacier’s “tongue” – its end point, where it discharges water – “scalloping and literally melting like an ice cube”.

Of course, glaciers are always calving and discharging ice and water but Fisher has found he is gradually seeing what’s seasonal and what is caused by global warming. When he flew over Plaine Morte glacier, he admired this “majestic” waterfall that was thundering from the glacier. Usually, the seasonal snow-melt would stop in summer but in 2019 it carried on. “I looked at it and thought, shit. That’s not cool. That was a melt. What drives me is these things are disappearing before our very eyes,” he says.

All but two of the Bernese Alps’ glaciers are forecast to be gone by the end of the century. “Everything I’m looking at will be gone in three generations. People will look at these photos like we look at the old British imperial photos of people dressed up watching the locals in Kenya and think, what a weird scene.”

Fisher has now set up a not-for-profit group, the Global Glacier Initiative, with the aim of assembling a personal pictorial record of glaciers around the world to record what is being lost and campaign for more decisive action to combat the climate crisis.

Topic: Biblical understanding and experience of waiting on God.

Rhema Word: Psalm 123:2 “Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until He has mercy on us.”

Let’s pray. Our Gracious Loving Father, thank you for giving us an opportunity to meditate your Word today. Thank you Holy Spirit for helping us to understand your Words which are living and active. Please help us to live a life as per your Word Lord. Father, we give all the Glory and Honour to you Lord. We pray in the mighty Name of your beloved Son Jesus Christ. Amen.

The God of the Bible is known for waiting. He never acts in haste. His very name is the God of Patience as Paul says in Romans 15:5 ”Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus,” In all His dealings with man, sinner or saint, He is patient throughout. If He had not been so, everyone of us would have been perished long ago. As He is patient with us, it is only right that He expects us to be patient in our relationship with Him. This is what the Bible calls as “Waiting on God”. Yes, this exercise “Waiting on God” is quite essential for Christian discipleship and growth. Today, let us try to understand the Biblical understanding and experience of waiting on God viz., (1) WHY wait on God?, (2) HOW to wait on God? & (3) What PROMISES God Makes to Those Who Wait?

(1) WHY wait on God?:

a] To Know God’s mind:

According to Apostle Paul, “God has given us the spirit of a sound mind” (2 Tim 1:7) and “we have the mind of Christ” (1 Cor 2:16). This does not imply that whatever we think is according to the mind of God. What is meant here is that under the New Covenant, God through His Spirit puts His laws in our mind and writes them on our hearts (Heb 8:10). In other words, at new birth He gives us the potential ability to understand His mind. But the truth always remains that God’s thoughts are higher than ours as the heavens are higher than the earth (Isaiah 55:8,9). “The carnal mind is enmity against God” (Romans 8:7b).

Waiting on God is an exercise by which we calm our minds and tune them up to receive signals from Above. An agitated and turbulent mind cannot recognize God’s voice. Psalmist David prayed in Psalm 25:4-5 “Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Saviour, and my hope is in you all day long.” This sounds like a morning prayer. Having made such a prayer at dawn, David had been waiting for the answer all through the day.

Remember, rarely does God reveal His mind instantly. His delays are purposeful. He knows when our minds are ready to respond to the revelation of His will. Our minds get prepared during the time when we wait on Him. We imbibe a spirit of reverence when we wait on God. In the same Psalm, David says in Psalm 25:12,14 ”Who is the man that fears the Lord? Him shall He teach in the way He chooses.. The secret of the Lord is with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant.”

Waiting on God to know His mind is comparable to a servant looking to his master for orders and instructions. This is pictorially illustrated in Psalm 123:2 ”As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until He has mercy on us.” To hear the voice from Above, it is necessary we stop our ears to the voices from around. Remember the directions for the first missionary movement were received while a team of five prophets-cum-teachers was waiting on God with fasting and prayer (Acts 13:1-4).

Remember, we miss God’s will at critical situations just because we don’t withdraw ourselves for a while to wait on Him. We draw rash conclusions and rush into courses of action which are totally outside the will of God. The beheading of John the Baptist was not an ordinary news to Jesus. John was both a family member and a fellow minister to Jesus. The Bible says in Matthew 14:13 “When Jesus heard it, He departed from there by boat to a deserted place by Himself.” When Jesus heard that His friend Lazarus was sick, He waited a while to know His Father’s mind in the matter. The four days of delay paved way not only to perform a resurrection miracle but also prepared a pulpit for Jesus to teach precious truths on resurrection (John 11).

When we are at crossroads, and there are more than one option, waiting on God is indispensable. Deciding between “good and bad” is easier than choosing between “good and better”. What is apparent may not be the actual. Only God knows which is best for us. He alone knows the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10). We are concerned about the immediate but He cares for the ultimate. Many a headache and loss can be avoided if only we take time to wait on God to see how He would steer the events.

Eliezer made a trip to Mesopotamia to hunt a bride for Isaac. When he saw Rebekah, who was exquisitely beautiful and exceptionally helpful, he was quite excited. However, he “remained silent so as to know whether the Lord had prospered his trip or not” (Gen. 24:21). Interestingly, during that time, the groom was also waiting on God by spending time in meditation out in the fields (v 63). What a lesson for parents and youngsters!

b] To strengthen our hearts:

Discouragement is the most effective tool in the hands of the devil against the children of God. There is hardly any saint who has never been hit by the arrows of discouragement. Problems, pressures, perplexities and pains spare no believer. The only way to live above fear, worry and depression is to wait on God.

But for the difficult and dreadful terrain the Psalmist walked through, he would not have given us so many priceless Psalms. The call to wait on God is not so loud and repetitious in any other book of the Bible. Take for example Psalm 27:14, ”Wait on the Lord; be of good courage and He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!” David confessed that he would have lost heart if he had not waited on God in faith (v 13).

God alone is omnipotent. We all have weaknesses, but in different areas. God has blessed us with limitations and inabilities so we may walk humbly before Him and others. True we have our natural strengths and skills. When we wait on God, He anoints us with His Spirit so our accomplishments and activities for His Kingdom are acceptable to Him. When we wait on Him, the spiritual powers overrule our natural abilities. This is the meaning of the famous passage in Isaiah 40:29-31 ”He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.” The fear-filled disciples became spiritual revolutionaries when they collectively waited on God for ten days and received the power of His Spirit (Lk 24:29; Acts 1:5,8,4; 17:8b).

The Author of Hebrews says in Hebrews 10:7-10, 12-13 ”Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll— I have come to do your will, my God.’” First, He said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law. Then He said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all…But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.” Yes, Jesus is still patiently waiting for his enemies to be made his footstool.

Remember, God chastise those whom He loves. No parent who spares the rod loves the child sincerely. During periods of chastisement, our hands become tired, knees shaky and feet faltering.

Prophet Jeremiah’s testimony is enlightening and encouraging: ”I am the one who has seen the afflictions that come from the rod of the Lord’s anger.. The thought of my suffering and homelessness is bitter beyond words…The unfailing love of the Lord never ends! By His mercies we have been kept from complete destruction. They are new every morning… The Lord is good to those who wait from Him…It is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord..Let them all alone in silence beneath the Lord’s demands.” (Lam 3:1,19,22,23,25,26,28). There is nothing that strengthens our hearts like the remembrance of the mercies of God in reverential silence.”

The situation we find ourselves in may be just “mire and mud”. Yet, when we wait on God, He will not only bring us out of the horrible pit, but also set our feet on a rock, stabilize our walk, and stir up our hearts to sing! That is what Palmist David says in Psalm 40:1-3 ”I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.”

This does not mean we will experience instant deliverance always when we wait on God. Rather the night will shine as the day, and darkness as light! (Psalm 139:11,12). Yes, our hands may be fettered with chains but our hearts will be given feathers to soar high. That was the experience of Paul and Silas in the Philippian prison. There is no way to be triumphant in darkness except by waiting on God with trust and confidence. God will send His servants to encourage us at such times. We must not be disappointed if their shouts of prayer do not lift us an inch.

Here is the Scriptural prescription God gives in Isaiah 50:10 ”Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant? Let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on their God”

Just yesterday we would have witnessed the power of God spectacularly in fire from Heaven. Next day we may be sitting dumped in depression. There may again be wind, earthquake and fire. Based on our yesterday’s experience, we may look for God in these elements. But He may not be there in any of them. This is where patient waiting on the Lord helps. He will speak through “a still small voice!” Sometimes God’s ways are “in the whirlwind and in the storm” (Nah.1:3b). Other times He leads us through “still waters” (Psa 23:2b). There is no stereotype with God. Only those who habitually wait on Him will not miss Him.

c] To fight the enemy:

It is only natural to run for shelter and refuge on the face of threat and danger. But in this era of swift and lethal weaponry, no place is absolutely safe unless God protects us. Because our times are in His hands and we are in his palms, we must learn to relax in any situation. The profitability of waiting on God when we are threatened and hounded is explained in Isaiah 30:15-16 ”This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it. You said, ‘No, we will flee on horses.’ Therefore, you will flee! You said, ‘We will ride off on swift horses.’ Therefore your pursuers will be swift!” God says in verse 18 ”Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! Yes, He would wait for us even if we would not wait for Him. What a gracious God He is! God further says In Isaiah 59:19(b) ”When the enemy comes in like a flood, The Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.”

God’s silence and slowness in acting on our behalf when we are under the severe attack of our enemies may be due to two reasons. Ether God wants to strengthen us by delaying deliverance or He wants to sanctify us. It is when we wait on the Lord we will understand the exact reason. This is explained in Isaiah 59:1,2,9,10 ”Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear… Therefore, justice is far from us, nor does righteousness overtake us; We look for light, but there is darkness! For brightness, but we walk in blackness! We grope for the wall like the blind, And we grope as if we had no eyes; We stumble at noonday as at twilight; We are as dead men in desolate places.” Remember, taking time to sit before God in self-examination is the only way to experience victory.

There may come times when friends and family members may turn out to be our enemies. Prophet Micah tells us what we should do in such a situation in Micah 7:5-7 ” Do not trust in a friend; Do not put your confidence in a companion; Guard the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your bosom. For son dishonours father, daughter rises against her mother, daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own household. Therefore, I will look to the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me.”

When King Saul sent soldiers to watch David’s house in order to kill him, David sang in Psalm 59:9-10 “You are my strength, I watch for you; you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely. God will go before me and will let me gloat over those who slander me.”

Remember, the weapons of our warfare are not worldly. They are mighty through God to knock down the devil’s strongholds. We don’t wage war with human plans and methods (2 Corinthians 10:3,4). We sharpen our spiritual weapons in prayer and waiting before God with perseverance (Ephesians 6:13-18). The Lord of Hosts is with us. We stand still and know that He is God! (Psalm 46:9-11). In the passage of spiritual warfare explained by Apostle Paul in Ephesians 6:14-17, five out of six weapons are for defence! This explains how waiting on God is the most powerful means of wrestling against Satan. It is by staying under the authority of God, we exercise authority over the enemy.

Remember in fighting the enemy, we must be more conscious of the orders of our Captain than our strengths and experience. Though David was a man of war, he had the habit of inquiring of the Lord whether to go against the enemy or not, and how to go about it. In the case of Philistines, once the Lord commanded him to go, and next time He said, “Don’t go”. David surrendered his logical and reasoning powers to the Lord of the Armies and that was the secret of his victory (2 Samuel 5:18-25).

(2) HOW to wait on God?:

(a) Pour out your heart before God:

Waiting on God is more than just praying. In prayer we essentially present our requests before God and seek His favour for an answer. But while waiting on God we simply open up and throw up ourselves before the Almighty. It is not an exaggeration if I say that waiting on God begins only after presenting our needs before Him in prayer. Waiting for an answer to prayer, especially for guidance, is often part of the answer. Here is David with his testimony and teaching in Psalm 62:1,2,5,8 ”Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved…My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him…Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.”

Remember, prayer can be offered in a hurry; but without taking time we cannot wait on God. It is a time of uninterrupted communion in our spirit with God. There need not always be a specific subject to dwell upon. That is why Palmist says in Psalm 62:5 ”My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him.” Yes, it is just waiting on “God alone”. Yes, it is an exercise of all our heart, mind, soul and spirit being filled with God Himself. It is fellowship in its purest form.

(b) Saturate yourself with the Scriptures:

Psalmist says in Psalm 130:5 ”I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His word I do hope.” Waiting on God does not mean passivity or keeping our minds blank. This may attract the devil because he keeps roaming about to occupy vacant and well-swept houses (Luke 11:24-26). We must feed richly on the Word of God during seasons of waiting on God. This is what Jesus did during the forty days He spent in the desert before He began His public Ministry. The time of waiting on God can also be used to ruminate the truths we study during our regular meditations of the Scriptures.

Joseph’s example: God had revealed His plan to young Joseph through dreams. Everything that followed in his life was just the opposite. The imprisonment in Egypt on false charges of sexual misbehaviour provided for him an excellent time to wait on God who never fails His Word. Joseph had written the vision clearly in his heart. He had been assured that the vision was yet for an appointed time; though it delayed, he must wait for it; it would surely be fulfilled. (Hebrews 2:2,3). The divine record says in Psalm 105:19 ”Until the time that his word came to pass, The word of the Lord tested him.” If we are really waiting on God, we will not employ fleshly methods to work out things for our promotion.

Let us read and reread Psalm 37 until its message sinks deep in our souls. David says in Psalm 37:7-8 ”Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret—it only causes harm.” David starts this Psalm with ”Do not fret because of evildoers, Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.” (Verses 1,2), and ends with in verses 39,40 ”But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; He is their strength in the time of trouble. And the Lord shall help them and deliver them; He shall deliver them from the wicked, And save them, because they trust in Him.” Amen…Hallelujah!!

(c) Keep on serving God faithfully:

Waiting on God does not mean we stop working for Him. Priest Zacharias kept on serving God till his very old age while waiting for an answer to his prayer for a child (Luke 1:5-14). David once lamented, ”I am exhausted from crying for help; my throat is parched and dry. My eyes are swollen with weeping, waiting for my God to help me” (Psalm 69:3) Nevertheless he kept on composing songs for God which became the Messianic prophecies and promises, like this Psalm. Servants of God down through the ages have testified that they had been soaking their pillows at nights with tears, but anointed them with the oil of gladness when they stood on the pulpits. This is the power of waiting on God.

Remember, waiting time is not a wasted time. The time spent in waiting to find the will of God will be saved while carrying it out. Waiting on knees brings us to our journey’s end quicker than walking on foot!

(3) What Promises God Makes to Those Who Wait?

(a) God promises to reward and bless our faithfulness:

David says from his experience in Psalm 37:34 ”Wait on the Lord, and keep His way, and He shall exalt you to inherit the land; When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.”

Jeremiah laments in Lamentations 3:25-26 ”The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks Him. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.”

God promises in Isaiah 30:18 ”Therefore the Lord will wait, that He may be gracious to you; and therefore He will be exalted, that He may have mercy on you. For the Lord is a God of justice; Blessed are all those who wait for Him.”

(b) God promises to give us what we need to endure:

God comforts us in Isaiah 40:30-31 ”Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”

(c) God promises to hear us when speak to Him:

Micah says in Micah 7:7 “ I will look to the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation; My God will hear me.”

(d) God acts for the one who waits for Him:

God promises in Isaiah 64:4 ”For since the beginning of the world men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, nor has the eye seen any God besides You, Who acts for the one who waits for Him.”

(e) Whoever waits for God shall not be ashamed:

God says in Isaiah 49:23 ”Kings shall be your foster fathers, and their queens your nursing mothers; They shall bow down to you with their faces to the earth, and lick up the dust of your feet. Then you will know that I am the Lord, For they shall not be ashamed who wait for Me.”

Shall we wait on God like King David and Joseph so that He would exalt us on His appointed time?

Shall we look to our Lord until He has mercy on us?

Shall we submit ourselves completely to our Lord to understand His mind?

Shall we wait on God till He strengthens our hearts?

Shall we wait on God to fight our enemy?

Shall we pour out our heart before God while waiting on Him?

Shall we saturate ourselves with the Word of God so that we can defeat the enemy with the Sword of Word of God?

Shall we keep on serving our loving God faithfully till the end?

Let us Pray: Heavenly Gracious Father, we thank you for helping us to understand about Biblical understanding and experience of waiting on You Lord. As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until You have mercy on us. Father, please help us to know your mind, your perfect will, your plans and purpose of our lives, to strengthen our hearts besides helping us to fight the enemy Lord. Thank you Father for teaching us on how to wait on God by pouring out our hearts before You, by saturating ourselves with Your living Words and keep on serving You faithfully Lord. Please help us to be patient and stand firm, as Your Son Jesus Christ’s coming is so near, and run our race by fixing our eyes on you Lord. We give all praise, glory and honour to Your Holy Name Lord. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

A method of talismanic magic for Tamers.

With this document, I hope you will find a means by which results driven magic can be achieved with the assistance of one’s partners. This use of seals or signs inscribed on paper, parchment or metal can be observed in a number of traditions and magical systems. Whether it is the Fu Talismans of Buddhism, the Pentacles of the Solomonic tradition or the Ofuda of Shinto; in both east and west the functionality of symbols to affect the material realm via the astral is recognised as real and powerful. If you’re part of an existing tradition you may already have a means by which to achieve this. If you are an eclectic/solitary Tamer, though, you may find this method helpful.

“Give me a lever and a place to stand and I shall move the earth.” - Archimedes. The Talisman acts as the physical basis for movement in the spirit world, it is the light that moves the dark to create the change and the place from which the spiritual power we use can make changes in our world. For this reason, all care and diligence should go into the talisman’s construction and consecration. Don’t skimp on the effort, the more work you put in, the more effectual and long lasting the talisman will be. Where the use of sigils is most commonly a one-time only performance, the construction of a properly prepared talisman allows for it to be used multiple times as needed, rather than having to construct a new seal every time one wishes to achieve an end.

Naturally, all of this work should be performed in a properly prepared sacred space, circle, temple or lodge. The construction of which is a lengthy topic which would require its own treatise. Step 1. Consecration and conjuration of the Implements.

The pens, inks, paper, parchment or whatever other implements you wish to use should be duly consecrated. The consecration of the pens, papers and other items should be done in the day and hour of Mercury (purchasing the items in the day and hour of mercury would be ideal as well). Only virgin items, that is items that have never been used for another purpose, should be used. Holding your projective hand over the implements speak the conjuration:

“I conjure thee, o’ creature of (ink, paper, parchment etc), through the authority vested in me by my patron Sovereign (Azulongmon, Zhuqiaomon, Ebonwumon, Baihumon or Fanglongmon) who facilitates my Bonds. Through this holy name which resonates out from the (north, south, east, west, or centre), I compel and command that all evil and hindering (spirits/forces) be cast out from this creature of (ink, paper, parchment etc). I bid that ye assist me in all my tasks and goals, working faithfully to my will as a duly consecrated tool of the Art.”

Say the conjuration and consecration for each of the implements, if you have multiple pens or pages they can be addressed together, but only multiples of the same at any one time, never paper and ink together, but a number of papers together is fine. Taking each individual implement pass them through consecrated incense and sprinkle them with holy/blessed water.

Step 2. Devising the Seal.

Arguably the most popular method for devising sigils is the method developed by Agrippa and popularised by Austin Osman Spare, wherein the letters of a phrase or word are condensed into a pictorial imago. For this method though, we’re going to use an english to japanese dictionary to find a japanese word or phrase that encapsulates our intention. This word or phrase can then be drawn out in Digimoji or Digicode so as to disguise it from the conscious mind. You may like to invoke the aesthetic of the Ofuda and draw the Digicode down a long strip of paper. Conversely you might opt for the Solomonic style, where the talisman is circular in shape and the characters are written about the inner circumference. If you are choosing to construct the talisman out of metal, rather than paper or parchment, ensure that you are using a metal with properties aligned to the working. While the conceptualising of the design can be done at any time; the inscribing of the talisman itself should be done in a day and hour conducive to the intention.

Step 3. Consecrating the Talisman

Once the Talisman has been constructed in the day and hour conducive to the work, it should be duly consecrated. This ideally, should be done in the same hour as construction but if this is not possible wait until the next same day and hour to resume the work. Place the talisman on your digivice (or if using a card-style and a D-Ark, you might like to swipe it through the card reader) and say the second conjuration:

“I conjure and consecrate thee, o’ Talisman of the Art. Upon this, the Holy Device. May this crude matter be cleansed by the Legendary Digivice, which guides this world towards light and drives away the darkness. May you too, o’ Talisman, be the light which moves the dark to enact my will in the world.”

Cense the talisman in consecrated incense and sprinkle it with the holy/blessed water as before. The talisman should then be wrapped in silk, stored in the pages of the magical record or some other sanctified and sacred place until it is required.

Step 4. Initial charging and activation.

Before the activation of the Talisman, decide on two ‘Trigger-Words’. This is a simple, short phrase or word that is going to be the queue for the talisman to perform its task and a second to restore the talisman to rest again. Use something that is going to cause an emotional response; things like “Release!” “Hatsudo!” (activate) or “So mote it be!” might all be appropriate depending on taste. Note: The triggers do not have to be verbal, it could require a somatic gesture, a unique and distinct memory to be called on or some other form of activation. Again the timing of this step should be tuned to the most auspicious day and hour which lends itself best to the working. Surround the talisman along with your Partner Digimon and reach out with your senses to them. Allow your energy to flow between each of you, passing it around in a circle along the line faster and faster until it whirs and vibrates to a point where the energy being circulated is like that of a single line of power. Maintain this for as long as possible before moving on. The Tamer should then gather the power and project it out into the Talisman.
