7 textile handicrafts items that are quite popular
India is a land of variety and diversity. You will find diversity in its culture, traditions, cuisine, and even its clothes. Every region of India wears a different attire and cloth used to make that attire becomes a specialty of that region.
Some years ago, due to the popularity of International clothing brand, Indian textile took a backseat. But now, it is gaining prominence globally, due to the fact that it is handcrafted and every piece uses natural material and is unique.
Every state of India produces a unique textile, but in this blog, we will talk about some of the famous textiles of India.
1. Kalamkari- Andhra Pradesh
Kalamkari is a type of block painted or hand painted textile which dates back to the Indus valley civilization. Some 3000 years old, it has still retained its grace. Craftsmen of Godwal and Pochampali still create contemporary kalamkari pieces, while some other artists have included new methods to make it more modern.
2. Shisha- Rajasthan
Shisha work is famous in Rajasthan, and you would find different chunries, sarees, and Kurtis with shisha design in the local market.
The mirror embroidery was brought to Indians by the Mughals in the 17th century, but now many Indian states work on this. The craftsmen here also produce shish Torana that wards off evil you can hand it on your walls.
3. Brocades- Uttar Pradesh
One of the most beautiful and precious textile pieces of India is its brocades sarees. In Varanasi, artists use gold and silver threads to weave magical pieces of brocades. It is absolutely beautiful and gorgeous and thus is still the most sought after textile pieces.
4. Kanjeevaram- Tamil Nadu
From the city of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, came the exceptional piece of textile- kanjeevaram. It is used to create beautiful pieces of sarees that have a heavy pallu woven with beautiful zari work.
They take around 20 days or even six months to weave and are a part of Indian bridal wear.
5. Chanderi- Madhya Pradesh
Chanderi is the traditional cloth of Madhya Pradesh used to make chanderi sarees. These are available in pure silk or chanderi silk or in a combination of cotton and silk. It is light with a sheer texture giving it the name of woven air.
6. Paithani- Maharashtra
Paithani is handwoven silk saree from Maharashtra. In the times of royal, they used to wear clothes of this material only. In Paithani sarees, the border of the saree is pretty heavy with the design of peacock engraved on the border. It looks beautiful from both the side and is found in the various price ranges.
7. Naga Shawls- Nagaland
Weaving is the primary occupation of people in Nagaland. It is made of red and black wool and every region of Nagaland creates a shawl with a distinct pattern specific to their tribe. They can also have figures of humans, animals or spear.
