The Evolution of Leather Handbags: From Function to Fashion

Leather as a material has been in use for many centuries, it has been used as a protective material in shields, armour and also for clothing and footwear.

This was because of the comfort and durability leather can offer. 

As humans, we were always close to animals. We used their hides for warmth, to create shade, for clothes, and to make weapons. 

Over the years the process of leather making has more or less stayed the same. With technological advancements, the processes have become more efficient and sustainable.

Leather handbags were used in ancient times as well, in modern times their functionality has changed and they have become an icon of style and luxury.

Let’s deep dive into the history of leather handbags

Ancient times- in ancient civilizations leather was used to carry food and tools, the design was simple and had drawstring closures. The materials used were cotton or animal skins. 

Middle ages-  leather making became a specialized craft and leather workers and craftsmen came into the picture. The design improved and so did the quality of the bags. There were closures and compartments included now.

18th and 19th centuries- With the Industrial Revolution leather bag production became standardized, technological advances in tanning and sewing all lead to mass production of leather bags. 

Early 20th century- leather bags became popular with professionals in the form of leather briefcases and gained popularity among women as well in the form of leather handbags. Pop culture and movies also played a big role in this. 

Late 20th century- designer leather bags entered the scene and gained popularity. Overall there was more innovation and creativity in the design and functionality. Patterns and hues were introduced and big designers revolutionized the leather industry by introducing leather handbags that were an example of style, luxury and craftsmanship. 

Contemporary times- leather bags are very popular today, their functionality has become more varied, now they are used to carry laptops, phones, wallets, keys, and so many other things. There are different colours, sizes and shapes available. 

The future of leather handbags

The leather industry is changing, more sustainable and eco-friendly options are being used to cater to the conscious consumer. Designs of leather handbags are also getting changed as trends are moving towards more minimalistic designs.

 Leather bags are now used by everyone, right from professionals to CEOs to college students, everyone is looking for something that fits them.

Eco-leather handbags are making an appearance having the same look and feel of pure leather handbags.

Day 7 of @frattweek is a free space... I made myself a new leather trifold wallet that’s Fratt-themed. Figured I’d just post it as me fulfilling the final prompt.
