Quilts vs. Dohars: Understanding the Differences and Choosing the Right Bedding for Your Needs
In an era like this, where no matter how much we glorify the hard work, and the constant efforts to make ourselves like none other, it's the peaceful sleep that we crave the most and to be honest, it is the one that makes all the difference in how we function as a person, therefore the quest of a peaceful sleep includes a lot of things, one of them is the right bedding sets, among the flood of options available to us, two of the lot makes the place of themselves fulfilling almost everybody needs, i.e Quilts and Dohars. And if you have been scrolling around, being confused, sit back as you have arrived at the perfect place.
Being the perfect combination of aesthetics as well as comfort, these two dominate our hearts and often leave us confused as to which one to go for during the cosy winters. In the upcoming read you would be informed about both of them, based on their speciality, functionality and what makes them unique from one another.
The cosiness of quilts:
Being the synonym of comfort and simplicity, quilts are generally the traditional blanket having multiple layers consisting three main elements, the top fabric, the filling or batting in between and thereafter the backing fabric. The top most layer is often the decorative, designed one and so is the last one to cover it all and synchronised them together. The padding is made up of cotton, and Kapaas Katha’s Home and Kid Collection’s quilts have the softest padding which lets you have the cosiest naps, our designs over quilts are top notch which rightly showcases the craftsmanship of our local artisans.
There are many advantages of using a quilt especially during the chilly nights of winter, they are extremely versatile, have extensive durability, provide warmth as its basic feature and definitely fall right into the place for providing aesthetics.
We have an extensive range of colours and patterns that would make you go wow and let you express your own aesthetics and transform your sleep into the synonym of relaxation.
Quilted love, Dohars:
Dohars being the literal example of comforters, make their position such graceful because of the warmth and cosiness they add to our lives, with a layer added to itself.
So to break it down to you, dohars are much simpler when it comes to their construction. The light filling in between two fabrics not necessarily be cotton, made any soft linen material or fabric, usually the top layer is designed one and the bottom one is plain, the main key difference between a quilt and a dohar is that the quilt is quite thicker when it comes to providing the warmth and its overall structure. Dohar can be your perfect partner while sitting on a couch , watching a movie so that you can be at peace.
This comfortable dohar isn't just to provide us warmth, but also to enhance the living experience oneself, it's typically a visual fest to enhance all your aesthetics of the bedroom.
If we are just differentiating on the basis of which would provide us more warmth, then it is definitely the quilts, they take the lead because of the extra padding. At Kapaas Katha’s Home and Kid Collection, you do get a set of both bed sheet and quilt set, which makes it an easy choice for you to have the same designed bed sheet and quilt hence maintaining and elevating all the aesthetics of your bedroom.
If you are still confused about which one to go for among quilts and dohar, then let us point out some factors that would help you make the point decision easier.
Climate: Climate is an important factor if it's summer, or you are in a place that doesn’t get much affected by winters, you should go for dohar, as it is not only lighter but also more breathable. On the other hand, quilts will be the best consideration to add insulation to your much-needed body during the chilly nights of winter.
Layering style: Dohar can be the perfect essential for your layering during all the seasons as they are thinner, more relaxing, and flexible which helps you have blankets, and quilts over them and still won't get out of your comfort zone. Quilts on the other hand are complete on their own, being this thick makes them enough for themselves and eliminates any other option for winters.
Maintenance and care: This could be one of the essential factors as it depends on how well-maintained you keep your blankets and bedsheets. But both dohar as well as quilts require a certain level of maintenance as they both provide us extreme comfort, and it is necessary to keep a check on them. You can easily dry clean them and you will be good to go.
Aesthetics: It is one of the crucial aspects when it comes to choosing the essentials for your bedroom, a Quilt or even a Dohar must match the whole aesthetics or the vibes of your room, otherwise it would just look disorganised. However, lucky you, because Kapaas Katha’s Home and Kid collections have both Quilts as well as Dohars available in the most elegant patterns as well as colours and would definitely light up your whole bedroom.
These were not only the specialities of Quilts and Dohars but also included what features would be the deal breaker for you, this blog regarding your whole dilemma of Quilts vs Dohars is absolutely to not promote any competition of one being superior or better than the other, but a simple comparison which would let you decide what suits you, fulfils your necessities and match your aesthetics. The one that aligns with your preferences should be your go-to option.
You must invest your time while researching and exploring different options, while considering the climate of your place, understanding how much maintenance each type of bedding will require and whether or not you could fulfil it. This will let you have the most perfect combination for your bedroom and a secret towards the most peaceful sleep as well.
At last what you choose whether it's the utmost cosiness of Quilts or the comforter Dohars, choose it wisely as it will be the key differentiator for your better lifestyle. Though Kapaas Katha’s home and kid collection has some unique bedding sets, which include bed sheet and quilt sets as well as bed sheet and dohar sets, this makes them stand out as even though you can always buy them all individually but having this precise set which would be the aesthetical options for you is such a blessing, especially in a dilemma when everything seems like a great option.

History and Heritage:
The journey of Mulmul sarees can be traced back to the historical landscape of Indian textiles. The term "Mulmul" is believed to have Persian origins, signifying a delicate cotton fabric. Over the centuries, the art of handloom weaving brought Mulmul sarees to life, blending comfort with intricate craftsmanship.
Fabric and Weaving Technique:
Mulmul sarees are crafted from finely woven cotton fabric, known for its lightweight and breathable qualities. The weaving technique involves the use of a plain weave, creating a sheer and airy texture. This makes Mulmul sarees an ideal choice for various occasions, especially during warm climates or festive celebrations.
Characteristics of Mulmul Sarees:
1. Softness and Comfort:
The hallmark of Mulmul sarees lies in their soft and feather-light feel against the skin. This quality makes them exceptionally comfortable for all-day wear, enhancing the overall draping experience.
2. Sheerness:
The fine weave of Mulmul fabric imparts a sheer quality to the saree. This characteristic adds a touch of ethereal beauty, allowing subtle glimpses of skin while maintaining modesty.
3. Versatility:
Mulmul sarees come in a myriad of colors, patterns, and designs. From simple monochromes to vibrant prints, they cater to diverse tastes, making them versatile for both casual and formal occasions.
4. Breathability:
The open weave structure of Mulmul fabric ensures optimal breathability, making these sarees an excellent choice for hot and humid weather conditions.
Styling Mulmul Sarees:
1. Casual Elegance:
Embrace the casual elegance of Mulmul sarees by opting for pastel shades or simple prints. These sarees are perfect for everyday wear, exuding a laid-back yet sophisticated charm.

2. Avoid Direct Sunlight:
To prevent color fading, store Mulmul sarees away from direct sunlight. This helps preserve the vibrancy of the fabric.

Mulmul sarees may wrinkle easily due to their lightweight nature. Use a low-temperature setting on the iron to smoothen out wrinkles without compromising the fabric's texture.

Explore government-run handloom emporiums that promote traditional Indian textiles. These establishments often showcase a diverse collection of Mulmul sarees from various regions.
2. Artisan Markets:
Visit local artisan markets or craft fairs where independent weavers and craftsmen showcase their creations. This provides an opportunity to directly interact with artisans and learn about the craftsmanship behind Mulmul saree .
3. Online Platforms:
Reputable online platforms such as Jaypore, FabIndia, and iTokri curate a selection of Mulmul sarees sourced directly from weavers. These platforms prioritize authenticity and often provide detailed information about the sarees' origin and craftsmanship.

Top of Form
In the town of Bagru, India, the art of block printing with natural colour has been passed down through generations. Block print textiles have not only flourished but thrived in India and are popular around the world.
Organic Hand Block Print method is a method to print your own designs. Block Printing allows you to customize commercially available fabric. Block Printing allows you to create a consistant design multiple times. The most important centres for block printing in India are Sanganer, Jaipur, Bagru and Barmer in Rajasthan, Bagh in Madhya Pradesh, Anjar, Deesa, Ahemdabad, Jetpur, Rajkot, Porbandar and Bhavnagar in Gujarat, and Pilakuan and Farukhabad in Uttar Pradesh. Block Printing in India in other forms is widely known as “Woodblock Printing”, “Woodcut Printing” or “Hand block Printing”. The block printing art is done by following a beautiful process where the required designs are carved on the blocks and natural dyes are used for printing on fabrics.
Chinese Historians acknowledge that the Chinese invented xylographie (woodblock) printing between 712 and 756 during the great age of T'ang culture.
Beautiful Organic Handblock Sarees
Sanganeri Print
Beautiful Organic Handblock Sarees was the Chippa Community of the Bagru District in Rajasthan that brought to light the block printing techniques on fabric. The technique of hand block printing has introduced several printing forms such as Sanganeri Block Print, Bagru Block Print, Ajrakh Block Print, Kalamkari Block Print, and Dabru Block Print. Very This makes it an eco-friendly choice as it reduces carbon emissions.
Method
All my life, I have been exposed to and obsessed by block prints. I remember being in awe of the elaborate themes in the textile gallery of Jaipur City Palace, as well as strolling through busy bazaars filled with stores selling them.
What amazes me, though, is how artisan families with diverse skill sets work together to make the process possible. The way that block makers, rangrez dyers, chippa printers, and dhobis (launderers) collaborate to produce a single piece of hand-block printed textile is just remarkable. I was so thrilled to have the chance to travel to Bagru, a town outside of Jaipur. Bagru was formerly an island in the Sanjharia River and dates back more than 400 years. The town gained notoriety for its organic block (Bagru).

Organic Handblock Saree
We traveled via tiny, pedestrian-only streets in Chippa ka Mahaulla, Rajasthan, to get to the Dheeraj Chippa printing unit. From there, we turned onto an even smaller gali—an incredibly narrow road—bordered by dye-stained open drains. The typically busy road was unexpectedly empty, and I could still hear his house, which also serves as his printing press, with its incessant "thak-thak." Dheeraj Chippa, the proprietor of his own company and an eighth generation block printer, took me through the labor-intensive process of natural dye printing, explaining its sustainability, the difficulties of commercialization, his experimentation with the art, and his response to the current pandemic crisis. Dheeraj Chippa, a graduate of design and craft school, founded his business in 2016 following the triumphant resuscitation of the traditional phadat print, a distinctive fusion of block and resist printing techniques that had all but vanished from Bagru and his family's studio. Because phadat print is so rare and demands such skill, he was able to persuade some of the top Indian designers and fashion houses to include it in their luxury collections after successfully replicating the ancient procedure. Naturally dyed and printed block print cloth has become a luxury due to a lack of material resources, the scarcity of high caliber karigars (workers usually connected with the handicraft industry), and rising material and labor costs. The market for unadulterated block prints has evolved today. The prints were initially made available to individuals 400 years ago.
His company is currently struggling, much like the majority of India's artisan communities. Many orders have been canceled and others have been placed on indefinite hold as the Indian government announced the first phase of lockdown intended to stop the COVID virus from spreading. The main markets are closed and the supply chain is broken. The financial shock that the epidemic has caused many artisan families in Bagru to experience is too great for them to handle, and they are in a desperate situation with no help from anywhere.
Before the global pandemic struck, Bagru's printing methods were being tested from a variety of angles. A craft that in the 1990s had not only survived, but thrived, is currently facing difficulties. Due to their water-intensive nature The traditional printing method is likewise becoming more commercialized with the arrival of large factories. For them, the lengthy and arduous process of printing with natural colors is the exact opposite of productivity because it raises the cost and decreases the profitability of the printed fabrics. Pigment dyeing, which is cheap, quick, and requires less water, is seeing a resurgence in Bagru in order to lower prices and satisfy the market's widespread need for vibrant colors.
Dheeraj, like the majority of Bagru's artisans, had set out to create exclusively naturally dyed and printed yardages on textiles made entirely of silk and cotton. He eventually, though reluctantly, had to accept pigment printing since it was essential to the survival of his entire means of subsistence. However, pigment dyes cause their own problems.
Bagru Print
Method
The preparation of the cloth is the first step in the Bagru block printing process, which continues using local techniques to produce the final printed fabrics. Two distinct techniques, direct and resist, are used to transfer designs with unique qualities onto a light-colored background using wooden blocks.
Where To Purchase
Ajrakh Print
Method
The easternmost regions of Sindh, Kutch, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, were the locations where Ajrak was produced following the division of India. There is some similarity between the names and Patterns and those found in Sindh. Since the Sindhi culture still has a significant effect in Gujarat and some parts of Rajasthan, there are no signs that new traditions are evolving in terms of the patterns that are used. An ancient Indian textile tradition is block printing. Block printed cloth from as early as 2000 BC has been discovered. This cultural custom is still practiced in villages today. We are committed to maintaining block printing as a craft that offers local families a stable means of subsistence.
Beautiful Organic Handblock Sarees

After that, the blocks are carefully hand printed on simple cotton after being dipped in natural dyes. Making the mud resist combination with gum, lime, and white chaff is the next stage. The handmade art made with love
The most vibrant of colours and beautifully made products by hand found in rajasthan had caught my eyes during the summer of this year. The use of these colours has been here for ages and now have come to fashion industry once again with a new enhanced trendy look.
Rajasthan is known for its textile industry and how this art has been passed down to generations from decades. I decided to take the handloom from here as it has the most unique way of handling fabric with different methods which are the most authentic handicraft skill in this age.
Its very fascinating of how the artisans here have a sharp eye for fine details with incredible precision of how to mould a simple fabric to a beautiful product.
There are different kind of handloom arts present in this state of India.
The use of tie-dye has been used here for a long time and is the most worn type of pattern here. BANDHANI is one of the type in which a cloth is decored by plucking it with fingernails in different shapes and forms giving it a figurative design. It comes in sarees , dupattas, dress materials which after worn enhances the look of the dress. the colours of these dresses are mostly contrast.
There are emotions behind every form of art piece, every design in a bandhani cloth shows one's feeelings at that moment, like red represents a bride ,for yellow represents maternity.
Every design is made with pure form of love and respect for the technique which has been used for over 5000 years now.
LEHERIYA is also a very well known design in rajasthan which is inspired fron the word 'waves' that is the wave type layers which are seen on the sand in the dessert areas. the zig-zag patterns or irregular stripes or waves holds one captivated in its unique look and appear visually fluid. This type of design typically went trendy due to it giving a very mordern look.
These lovely patterns are made with resist-dyeing technique with certain where certain parts of the fabric maintain the original form where the others arrest the hues applied.
These traditional methods maintain the heritage styles of dyeing and are also sustaible or eco-friendly.
Handblock print is one of the most commonly worn prints in jodhpur rajasthan. It is made by carving diffrent motifs on a piece of a wood which is then painted and pasted on a cloth in a particular way .
It usually has intricate yet sober designs which gives the particular cloth a richer look and is also something can can be worn casually for outings or even festive fuctions.
Block prints shirts , kurtis are casual wear for the people living here and is one of the best classic outfits.
Shisha work famous in both Rajasthan and Gujarat, usually worn during festive season and weddings. It is made by sewing small pieces of mirror to a piece of cloth in different type of patterns. The mirror pieces are cut into different shapes depending on what design one wants to create.
It is also used in different decorative items like pillow cases, carpets, small sofa covers and so on, this type of work is famous all over India and is also found in some other countries to.
These material dresses need a lot of care as they could get ruined easily, but the look they serve after worn by one is just priceless!
JUTTI , they have been a part of Indian culture for decades and have still evolved to abetter version of itself according to the changes happenning over the years.
They are either pointed near the toe or are curved or are m shaped, these jutti's are made in such a way that the colour combinations of any jutti are easily paired with any type of ethnic or indo-western clothing.
Usually jutti's come in two to three types of materials, most common are leather, rexine, taiwanese sheet ,where. the leather jutti's are the most preffered one's from my experience as they last longer compared to the others materials, the only backlog you could face with a artificial leather jutti is that the odour at the start of its use is a little irritable.
THESE ARE SOME OF THE CREATIVE AND BEAUTIFUL HANDLOOMS FOUND IN RAJASTHAN , AND I SAY THAT EXPLORING THESE WAS VERY FUN AND INTERESTING!

The process of creating elegant Ajrakh print fabric is a wide journey, and the expert artisans wrap up this whole thing with intricate attention to detail and care. Here is a quick glimpse of the whole process of creation:
Select the right fabric.
The basis of creating marvels begins with the type of fabric we choose. For the Ajrakh print fabric, we use pure cotton-based textiles to introduce the finest art. Then we keep it overnight in camel dung, caster oil, or soda ash to remove the starch from the fabric. The next day, we wash it in water for further processing.
Block printing the fabric
Handblock printing is extensively used in making the fabric visually appealing by incorporating the motifs and design. The intricate design was carved into the wooden block, dipped in the natural dye, and stamped on the fabric. This whole process needs to be done with immense care. For every particular color, artisans used different wooden blocks to bring rigorousness to their designs.
Mordant application
After printing on the fabric, artisans use alum or clay for the mordant application. This process is responsible for sustaining the print in a deep-rooted way during printing.
The alum or clay bridges between the cloth and dye and binds the molecules of dye to retain the color after several washes.
Drying and oxidation processes
The fabric, after printing and mordant application, is now set to dry and soak under the sun. This process takes one whole day, and the printed fabric rests on the floor, adding a natural, vibrant shine to the fabric.
Resist printing
The next day, artisans employ the resist printing process on the fabric. As the name suggests, during the process, some of the parts of the fabric are covered with a paste of clay or gum. In this way, the dye will not get into the covered part, and you can add multiple colors and prints to it.
Manifold Dye Baths
The creation of the Ajrakh print fabric requires an extreme quantity of water, multiple thorough washes, and printing. That is why this whole process needs to be covered in 16 stages and also requires immense labor efforts.
Finishing
Now is the time to bring the creations of Ajrakh print fabric to rest. Artisans examine the whole process, whether they have achieved the final creations or not. Once it is done, the team prepares to drop down into the market.
Colors add a charm to the fabric, and we use natural dyes to achieve the desired color. In Ajrakh print fabric, we use scrap iron, alum, and indigo dyeing to bring the black, red, and blue colors to the fabric.
