Collective Memory and Neo-Idealism

Hey yall! While reading Benjamin Tallis’s twitter thread and trying to better understand neo-idealism, I came across an interview he did for a Hungarian newspaper, Nepszava, where he discussed neo-idealist countries in Central-Eastern Europe and their focus on the shared memory of communist oppression to rationalize/prioritize protecting societal values.  The importance of collective memory and citing history is stressed.  Hungary, however, is missing from this Central-Eastern Europe block.  The article “Hungary marks treaty centenary as Orbán harnesses ‘Trianon trauma’” details how Orbán’s campaigns have completely ignored shared Soviet history and instead have focused on “Trianon trauma.”  Please read the article to learn more about what this looks like, and google the Trianon Treaty; it is very interesting.  The article illustrates how when one country in a region is either ignoring or denouncing shared memory, it causes tensions with the countries around it.  It provides context to potentially explain Hungary’s actions, and why it is missing from the rise in neo-idealism in Central-Eastern Europe.
