Speaking of Kimi Ga Shine (YTTD), Zero Escape (and undertale i guess), Something interesting about the Danganronpa fandom is how obsessed they are with the idea of "multiple routes". As you may or may not know, the original Danganronpa Game: "Distrust" had the idea of having who kills and who dies to be affected by the player with the "Trust meter". Currently, Danganronpa has only had bad endings with one where you make a choice but that's about it.
While I would like to see this and it would make the game interesting but the fandom acts like they were robbed of something amazing when they learn about this. I saw comments about how the lack of this feature was "wasted potential" or how they would rather play Distrust over Danganronpa. Idk, Danganronpa's killing game structure and visual scope would make the idea of different killer/victim routes overly ambitious. It's not impossible but it would be like writing 2 danganronpa games for the price of one. Especially if the original plan was for potentially multiple routes for EACH chapter like that's going to be a nightmare to write and develop for. There are probably some minor ways they can make it work like only ONE split divergence but the other games (YTTD, Zero Escape, Undertale) I mentioned have their entire premise designed with multiple routes in mind. YTTD, Undertale, and 999 don't have the visual scope Danganronpa does.
TLDR
Routes with Different Killers/Victims sounds cool but it's not absolutely needed and Danganronpa's killing game structure and visual scope would make it a nightmare to develop for.
i think anyone who thinks DISTRUST would've been better than danganronpa, a. has never even looked vaguely into game and narrative development, and b. thinks until dawn would've been the peak of gaming and storytelling if not for all the appropriation of Algonquian folklore, but i actually had a video script about this
the feature they're talking about would've been cool in terms of gimmick, but ultimately it would've never seen the light of day even if they stubbornly decided to make it work. again this is a long post
branching paths works with undertale because the genocide route is so fundamentally different to the pacifist route that you are basically playing two different stories, and it doesn't work with YTTD because it means that for all the 'realistic depictions of grief' (people do not develop hallucinations and go into depressed fugues while their lives are still actively in danger, that's why it's post-traumatic stress disorder), characters have to proceed with the notion that Ken Tanaka and Hana Watanabe could be both alive or dead, so they either proceed weirdly mournfully or weirdly okay with someone being dead. DISTRUST would inevitably have very similar issues - even worse, in fact. undertale was barely a glimmer in toby fox's eye in 2008.
so there's that problem - so why not solve it by having multiple writers writing down all the routes? well, let's do some math.
let’s say any character can kill any other on any runthrough, but the number of victims per case and killers per case is always 1, until Trial 6, where the mastermind is revealed. with 15 characters, potentially 16, and any of them able to kill any other, even if we eliminate the possibility of a character's trust meter reaching 0 and them committing suicide, we’re still looking at 10 kills per game. multiply 16 by 15 to account for no suicides. That leaves us with 240 possible pathways for the game to take, all needing to be crammed onto the PSP’s small cartridge space, because this was in the transition between the 6th and 7th console generation.
if we add in the possibility of anybody being the mastermind, that's 240 x 15 for 'no, naegi will never be the mastermind' and 240 x 16 for 'naegi might be the mastermind'. that's 3600-3840 branching pathways.
another thing im aware of is makoto being one choice for protagonist and kyouko being the other, a la Sonic Adventure 2's Hero/Dark stuff (one of the ideas i think was pretty good, getting to see the same events from a different perspective). but in conjunction with this idea, that means we double the amount of pathways again; 7,680 pathways.
then we add on 'well hold on, we might need new murder scenes each time so that even if Leon gets murdered in Chapter 2, it won't be the same case each time'. let's be kind and only add on an extra 2 ways the case could play out SIKE THAT'S NOT KIND IN THE SLIGHTEST.
7,680 x 3 = 23040
and if you think that seems doable, let's say kodaka has got a team of about 5 writers and they each have a deadline of 1 month to write an entire path before moving on to the next one - a completely unrealistic and insane time limit that nobody would be able to adhere to, but let's say the team are writing gods and can actually do it.
they would be writing out paths for the next 1920 years.
i.e they could have started writing these paths when christianity's first dogma and formulas regarding morality and the kama sutra were being put together, and they would've only JUST FINISHED just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
there's also the fact that you would sacrifice being able to tell a good thematic narrative but as the fandom has kind of established it cares more for novelty than any deep themes and so novelty is what drives fandom discussions

Now that I think about it, Nankidai has the chances to give us a prequel and sequel of YTTD, when he ends this one of course.
The prequel could be about "The Hades Incident", with the guy of the momerandum as protagonist. It also would explain about the origins of Asunaro and its motives with more clarity.
The sequel could be about ultimately ending Asunaro, with Ryoko as protagonist, since we probably we ain't going to see her in this game. It's also the perfect opportunity to add old characters we already seen, like Hana (from Nao's manga panel) or Stronghold (from Reko and Alice's backstory).
