A Perry Mason x Ace Attorney idea

Let's have the court system start to implement juries. But of course, none of the current prosecutors were taught with the jury system, requiring them to have some re-training. To aid with that, they call up an old prosecutor who actually served in Los Angeles during the old jury system.

That prosecutor is Hamilton Burger, the former District Attorney had resigned in protest when juries had been disbanded and so while much older is happy to help reinstate the jurist system. And while he couldn't help but keep an eye out for what was going on in law circles, it's still a culture shock once he's actually among this latest generation of defense attorneys and prosecutors. And of course, he's a bit of a shock to them.

"Hold it! Aren't you going to state your opening statement, Defense counsel Wright?"

"My opening statement?"

"You know 'Members of the jury, I'm here to declare that my client is not guilty for such and such reasons'? Its how defense usually opens their case. Also, where are your witnesses?"

"I get to call witnesses?!"

"Objection your honor! He's leading the witness."

"You asked the same sort of question just a minute ago!"

"Yes, but you were supposed to object to it!"

*grabbing whip with bare hands* "Miss Von Karma. I don't know exactly how things are run in Germany. But here, we try to keep things civilized. And a civilized court atternories do not just whip defense attorneys, witnesses, and detectives for 'being fools'! How the heck have you not gotten arrested for misconduct?! And don't think you and your hawk are exempt in this, Mr. Blackquill! The two of you could actually kill someone!

Sorry that it's taken me so long to answer, I got a little distracted😅

7. Share a snippet from one of your favorite pieces of prose you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

"It felt like someone was looking through his brain in the most literal sense. Pulling out memories forcefully, flashing them in front of his eyes and then grabbing more. (The phrase 'pick your brain' suddenly seemed a lot darker.) He saw so many events from his life at once. But they were all out of order. His and Maddie's wedding. Sara dying. Vlad looking through his ghost binder for the first time. Pops glaring at him for speaking. Danny's first steps. Ma ignoring him because he wasn't Sara couldn't be Sara. Vlad smiling. Vlad's accident. Jazz dancing. Danny lying in front of the Interdimensional Wormhole possibly dead.

Jack would have screamed if he could. But whatever ghost or other entity was possessing him, was making sure that he was locked up tight. The ringing was so loud. The memories kept flashing in his mind. His and Maddie first date. Harriet's article. Jazz's first dance recital. Danny explaining the birth of a star. Falling out of a tree and breaking his arm in fifth grade.

Jack distantly felt his arm get burned. He almost wondered if it would hurt later. But the ghost didn't seem to be done invading his mind and memories. Ma and Pop looking disapprovingly as he sang Danny Boy for Sara at her funeral. Finding out that Vlad wouldn't let him visit the hospital. Getting a returned Christmas card from Vlad with his face scratched out and the words "I HATE YOU" angrily scrawled on it. Him Vlad and Maddie sitting and laughing and talking." -Five Times Vlad Defended Jack (And The One Time He Didn't) Chapter 6, 'A Bitter Reunion'

This section just turned out exactly how I wanted it to. I have other parts that I'm proud of, but right now, I think this is my favorite because it feels scared. (If that makes any sense😅) This entire chapter ended up how I wanted it to. But this section, where Vlad is possessing Jack and looking through his brain? It just turned out precisely how I envisioned it.

11. Is writing your passion or just a fun hobby?

A hobby. I like doing it, and don't plan on quitting any time soon. But it isn't my passion.

29. If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?

This is the question I had the hardest time with. Because like, I'm sure that there are tons of fics that I'd love to write a sequel or prequel for. But, I couldn't think of any. At all. And it aggravated me to no end. So I'm leaving this one open ended with an, "I don't know. I'm sure there's at least one out there. But I'm sure I'm under qualified."

37. Talk about your current wips.

I'm gonna just do all the ones I can think of off the top of my head. I'll link all the ones that are on AO3 already.

"The Twin Trap" is an AU fic I'm working on with @deaths-true-mortal-enemy about the Maximoff twins. Kind of a parent trap au. I think it's a lot of fun.

I'm working on a sequel to "On Pride And Failure." About the moments after the fight, and how it all affected Jack. (There's also a lot of mentions of his sister, and her death. It's a little dark.)

"I'M GOIN'..." is a fic (that I need to finish) about Danny's accident. It starts a second AU about if Kwan was on Team Phantom. And I think it's pretty good so far.

"From The Ghost Zone Into Your Home" is about the ghosts, and how they choose who they become. (Because in my AU they're not dead.)

"Never Play Among Us With Two Lawyers, A Private Detective, And A Police Lieutenant (it won't end well for your receptionist)" is a goofy modern AU Perry Mason fic. Perry, Della, Paul, Hamilton, Tragg, and Gertie all play Among Us. (I started it back when the game was huge and haven't really touched it since.)

Ch 8 of "free-fall", Perry Mason HBO, Perry Mason/Hamilton Burger. At this point Ham and Perry just want the most idyllic life of homosexuals in hiding that they can ask for, but a blackmailer and the case she wants to stifle stands in the way. In this chapter, Perry does a lot of investigating and casework on both Brooks McCutcheon's murder and Camilla Nygaard, Ham meets Teddy, and Perry meets the elite homosexuals Ham's befriended in Los Angeles. It's a tightrope walk he has to be confident he can achieve in order to keep his feet steady.

When Della is attacked, Perry and Ham connect and stumble upon a chemistry together neither of them expected to find. After the attackers are discovered and eliminated as a threat, all seems to be well until Brooks McCutcheon dies and Ham receives a threat against himself and Perry the same day. Perry has his own plans on how to manage the situation, however...

Ch 5 of "free-fall," Perry Mason/Hamilton Burger, an AU set after S1 and heading towards the events of S2. In which Ham loses his mind over Perry throwing himself into danger, gets talked into joining in the bad decisionmaking, and we finally see the inside of the shady Morris Cooper's Church operation called Sinai. Ham and Perry get frustrated with each other, because there's at least one thing that needs to be hashed out right now.

@classicokid on Twitter noticed my Hamperry fic and asked if they could do some fanart for it. And, look, I'm rarely to never going to turn down fanart for any of my works, because I can't do anything visually artistic worth a damn and I respect fanartists more than you can imagine. (Like, if you're ever inspired and want to know if I'm cool with it, you can ask and I'll probably just spout a bunch of heart emojis and ask to see it.) That said.

It's weird because all I can really do is drop a link as they don't have their Tumblr up or going; they SERIOUSLY got the vibes from the fic, IMHO, and I'm just so pleased. Check it out if you're interested.

Ch 3 of "free-fall", Perry Mason/Hamilton Burger; an AU set in between seasons 1 and 2 where an attack on Della brings Perry and Ham closer together, and restrained revenge fuels Perry's obsession with the case of who attacked Della. In this chapter, Ham and Perry finally figure it out despite all obstacles.

🌸 Hi, do you have any plans for free-fall? I keep hoping and I know there are more Ham Burger/Perry Mason fans like me out there.

Weird that you mention it. I have the vast majority of the next chapter planned and visualized in my head, but other things have been jumping the queue. It'll be a hot minute if I do the Romestewy AA AU first - I just started it and the first half of the first scene is 1.5k alone - so there's a chance I sit down and try to knock out this Ham/Perry chapter this weekend/by Monday. It's basically written in my head, I just have to put words down. (I'll get back to Succ, I promise!)

I feel especially obligated to this now that the show's been officially canceled (I hope this isn't how people find out, but it's possible). I intend to work the season 2 events through this angle and an established relationship of sorts between these two, and find something through the other side. I also may eventually write a totally different post-canon Ham/Perry? It's a thought.

Things to look forward to: Ham tells Della, things get sappy, Perry does something immensely stupid and Ham makes sure a Conversation is had.

I only just noticed that somehow I didn't post the entirety of the third chapter of "free-fall." So there's a short, very shippy scene directly at the beginning that might inform the rest a bit, actually. Feeling silly for somehow missing this when I posted, but I like that scene, so here goes, if you're so inclined to take a peek.

"free-fall," a Perry Mason (2020) fic. 1/unknown. Perry Mason/Hamilton Burger. No E-rated content yet, but there will be.

Prior to Mason and Associates gaining the main case of season 2, Della is attacked by an unknown assailant with a single clue left in her purse. This is more than a case to Perry - and to Hamilton Burger, who he brings in as Della's friend and hopefully an ally in her case. It would be as simple as that, if only the two hadn't connected in a moment of weakness.

No matter how hard they want to (Perry wants to), there's no going back.

Ch 11, the final chapter, of "free-fall" - a Perry Mason/Hamilton Burger AU from the end of season 1 that folds the events of season 2 over the course of the fic. After a dark night of drinking worried over a threat to Della's life, Ham and Perry fall into a relationship together, facing religious cult leaders and blackmailers alike over the course of a tumultuous year. Perry regains partial custody of and a real relationship with his son, even as his worst impulses threaten to kick in years into his relative sobriety and care.
