Lavender and Nightshade
They came to me in a dream, and Lavender is....highly persuasive O///O Yeah, they evolved out of purple swapfell, but they’re most certainly different from Violet and Grape....mostly because Lavie can see with both eyes and Nightshade knows how to be prudent and patient.
info under the cut
Lavender is the older sister, a cunning potion seller and gifted with the magical gift of True Sight, able to see on first glance the true worth and disposition of a person. She keeps this dampened by covering one eye, but it’s still strong enough to get a good read no matter what.
Don’t get on her bad side when asking about her wares, or she’ll give you what you asked for in the worst way (the Jafar genie gambit).
She has no qualms about ruining the lives of people who treat her or her sister badly.
Both girls’ spells and potions only have a 24 hour effect at most, but it’s amazing what can happen in such a short time.
Nightshade is the classic witch, gifted with Transmogrification, the ability to change the nature of something. She uses this for pranks.
Poof! Your garden is a snake haven! Poof! Your dog can speak French! Poof! Your beehive hairdo now attracts real bees!
And she rides off on her broom cackling merrily at the chaos in her wake.
The two of them live in Skeleton Swamp, a desolate bog between the Thick Forest and Shimmer Lake. There are other huts here and there, but these two are the only ones living on the direct route.
Hallowstale is very Halloween central and the monsters take up roles of common costumes. The caprine residents of the hidden Thick Forest village tend to take on Occupational costumes, being the closest in proximity to humans. Bakers, Firefighters, Maids, Police, etc, their village is a quiet and peaceful one.
Skeleton Swamp is filled with the more tame spooky costumes, such as Ghosts, Skeletons, Witches, as well as common animals like Bears, Rabbits, Deer, and so on.
Shimmer Lake is home to tropical costumes and aquatic ones, mermaids, hula dancers, fish, sea monsters, all make their home in its waters or around the shores.
Through a guarded entrance at the bottom of the lake resides Dinosaur Cavern, where massive lizards, mammoths, cave men, and living flames reside.
With help from the scientific minds at the end of Dinosaur Cavern, a rocket has been built to blast visitors up to Cloud Core, the flying city that is home to robots and other futuristic costumes.
Lastly, via exclusive private hot air balloons, comes the Castle of Kings. Royalty, Knights, Wizards, and Princesses make their home here, among others.
No one is allowed beyond the castle into the Garden of Evil, so no one knows what lies there unless they listen to the oldest of legends. (hint. what’s the last letter in the old greek alphabet? y’know, the letters they use for fraternity/sorority houses?)
With such a journey into the fantastic ahead of them....why did Frisk start this quest anyway?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Before Papina was born, Lucia-Estrella, and Luan moved with their two year old child, Sanse, to a small community just outside Ebott city. The housing was much more affordable, and the community looked very friendly. In fact, there was a party held to celebrate the newcomers, and everyone pitched in to help the family move in. However, this small village community is not what is seems. The day after, the family was visited by Chara Evans. Chara shut the blinds, unplugs the television, and checked every nook and cranny for any hidden cameras before warning Lucia and Luan of the danger they are in by staying in this community: the Purity of Soul, the executions, the absolute hatred of monsters and monster-humans and those that show support for them, and lastly, the biases they have favoring soul mages so most rules don't apply to them. The family, due to being tight financially, don't have the option to move again; they got lucky with how cheap housing was here, even if they have to shuttle bus into the city. Both parents have to work, both jobs are in the city, and they are both out for most of the day. Chara volunteered to babysit Sanse while they find their footing and rack up enough money to leave; they even said they would help with financial things using their allowance.
When Sanse was 4 and their mother had just given birth to their baby sister, Papina, the Cortez family sat at home as they watched the live broadcast execution of Chara. Chara warned them about hidden cameras that would be watching them to make sure they watched, so the family had no choice. Sanse watched helplessly as their best friend and elder sibling figure disappeared into the depths of Mount Ebott. What Sanse just witness made them hope that they would turn out to be normal when they turn five, that they wouldn't accidentally put a target on their family's backs. Come their fifth birthday, Sanse's worst fear came true. On their doorstep was a plain brown package addressed to Sanse, and inside the package was a pristine white skeleton mask.
Sanse's parents did everything they could to learn about monster-human children, their powers, etc. in secret. They even had tests done at the Ebott City Soul Scientific Research Center to gain a better understanding of Sanse and the powers they posses. Sanse also met up with some of Chara's closest friends from the city, and they helped Sanse practice their powers in secret. All the while, the family kept Sanse's 'gift' a secret, even from Papina, as the young child proved from a very early age to be too curious and too talkative for their own good. For Sanse, that would be a bit tricky, as after school, they would have to pick Papina up from daycare and go straight home, only to then try sneaking off to train or to then be picked up by their mother and taken for testing.
They kept this up for four years, until Papina's fifth birthday. Another package, another skeleton mask. Papina always wanted to know what her family was hiding, but in that moment, with all the answers being flooded into her brain, she regretted ever wanting to know. The next few day, Papina was also taken to the same research center for testing. Sanse also gave Papina the rundown on the routine: while at the village and anywhere the PoS could be, they are to hide their masks. But they also can't leave their mask at home, because it will appear by their side when they leave it a certain distance away from themselves. So they are to use backpacks or tote bags wherever they go so they can hide their masks. When Papina told Sanse that they were scared and that they wish that they were brave like them, Sanse taught Papina that bravery is being able to acknowledge that you're scared, but still face what scares you so.
One day, during school, Papina witnessed a person being bullied by two older kids. Paps had also been bullied by these same people before, but they mysteriously left her alone one day (thanks to Sanse's secret private 'talk' with them). She didn't want to face their wrath, but she also couldn't stand by as someone else faces it instead. Pap's recalled what Sanse told her, and steeled herself. She took out her mask and put it on, and, using some abilities she learned from the research center, she stopped the bullies. However, the child she saved was a child from the village.
The Cortez family tried to run. But they were soon caught and taken to the top of Mount Ebott. For knowingly hiding the truth twice, and both children having full knowledge and hiding it as well, they were all publicly sentenced to death. They forced the children to wear their masks and tried to feed them the poison broth Chara warned the parents about all those years ago, but Sanse got on the defensive. And so did their mother.
Lucia being a patience soul mage froze almost all the PoS in place, except the Integrity soul mage council elder's soul in the crowd. They went to attack Sanse and Papina, but Luan took the damage. He fought with the elder while Lucia took Sanse and Papina in her embrace, told them that she and Luan loved them, and then pushed them into the hole. Sanse, held Paps close to their chest as they fell so only Sanse Saw their mother being stabbed in the back. Only Sanse saw their mother's beheading. And when they fell to the bottom, only Sanse saw their lifeless bodies drop down with them.
Torel found them as he heard Sanse's screams for help. He quickly led the children away and cremated the bodies, giving the urns and Lucia's soul to them. The two children would spend a year in Torel's orphanage before being reluctantly adopted by W.D. Gaster. Papina was happy to have a parent again and was eager to get to know their new mother. Sanse, however, could tell that Gaster had ulterior motives, and made sure to make her life hell. After some encouragement from Papina, and Sanse finally getting their answer (which yes, Gaster had ulterior motives to study Sanse and Papina, as it should be impossible for Soul Mages to give birth; Soul Mages are commonly sterile), and some bonding time, Sanse warms up to Gaster. Gaster teaches Sanse and Papina, and even takes Sanse to her work. They also occasionally are babysat by either Torel or Asgore.
One day, during one of Sanse's more private studies, Sanse proposes an experiment to not only give them a black soul, but also fuse both the human and monster souls together. Gaster initially refused vehemently, but Sanse blackmails her with telling Asgore and Torel about her black soul and all the lies she has told them and noted in her personal journal. Gaster gave in and experimented with Sanse. There were several hiccups, and several resets, and Sanse nearly dying several times over due to unknown DT overdosing, but Gaster used parts of her own soul to equalize the attributes.
With Sanse's black soul, they gained little extra abilities from each attribute: Faster attacks and consistent damage per second with Bravery, a skull familiar that holds their blast bullets and acts as a shield from time to time with Perserverence and Kindness, also general telekinesis with Perserverence, and gravity manipulation on the soul with Integrety. And because of Sanse's fused soul, their human body and skeleton body find a happy medium between the two. Sanse no longer needs to use their mask to transform between the two forms. However, the drastic changes happening to Sanse's body got Papina concerned. She did her own investigating. The thing that concerned her the most is that Sanse can fully remember resets, and so Paps goes to Gaster with the demand to giver her the determination trait so that she may also remember resets so Sanse wouldn't be alone. Gaster again tried to refuse, and she believed she would succeed this time, but Papina just sang at the top of her lungs, trapped Gaster's room, and made it where Gaster could barely sleep or go about most of their day without hearing the obnoxious singing. Gaster soon agreed out of desperation. Gaster did take this chance to see what would happen if a piece of her soul was added to another without all the other attributes also being used. So Gaster injected a DT mixed with a fragment of her soul.
When Sanse was 13 and Papina was 9, Gaster fell into the core and was erased from everyone's memories, except theirs. They didn't know this at first, so it comes as a surprise when no one they talk to remember the late scientist. Gaster was well known, so it would be impossible for people to not know her. Not knowing what else to do, they turn to Torel, who, like everyone else, doesn't remember Gaster. He believes that he and Asgore had adopted them. Sanse and Papina don't reject any of this and just try to move on. They spend several years trying to move on from Gaster's "death". Sanse takes to learning all that they can about what happened to their adoptive mother, and Papina opts to being even more of a beacon of positivity, especially for Sanse. They each try to keep something of Gaster's as they move in with Asgore. Gaster didn't have very many things of hers except books. Papina goes out to the Echo pumpkins and picks out Gaster's pumpkin; it lead her to a secret compartment book where she puts a small picture frame of Gaster, her, and Sanse at the pumpkin patch in it. Sanse takes Gaster's Journal of Scientific Inquiries.
One day, Sanse tries what they had set out to do by turning their soul the way it is: Break the Barrier. Sanse tried and tried, but the power needed was much more than what their soul could take. Asgore had to drag Sanse away before they could do permanent damage to their soul.
A year later, the River Person summons the two. R.P. had created a new soul mage child, named Patricia, using their mother's soul. River Person told the two that the very nature of this child shouldn't be told freely. Sanse and Papina both decided to keep this a secret. On the subject of keeping things a secret, Asgore had them keep Patricia's Soul Mage status a secret from everyone. She's afraid of another PoS member taking away another child's life just to keep people underground. They too promised. For Sanse, they would carry these promises and secrets to the grave, the only one that would here about it would be Chara. For Papy, she's not so good with secrets; that's why her best friend Flowey can hold them for her!
Over the next 7 years, Sanse takes odd jobs here and there to accrue enough money to pay for Gaster's old house in Halloween towne. Sanse also took up Gaster's position on overseeing all the different scientific departments. On the tale end of the last year before moving out, Asgore offers Sanse a more permanent job. She offers Sanse a job as an undercover sentry, and secret judge. She knows Sanse's soul works different than most, though she doesn't know how. She knows Sanse can see people true essence, and no secret can be kept from them. And with Asgore growing more paranoid by the day about secret PoS followers being underground, having Sanse as the judge would give her piece of mind for everyone's safety. Sanse took the job without hesitation.
With a more permanent and stable form of income, Sanse sticks with sentry duty, scientist, and occasional judge if anyone wants to see Asgore. And while Sanse thinks Papina doesn't know much about it, Flowey makes sure to keep Papy updated. Papyrus in return keeps everything tidy, takes care of Patricia, learns to cook, and in general tries to keep a positive atmosphere for her family.
When Alphys takes over as the new head scientist, Sanse takes up selling candy apples as a cover up for their three sentry stations.
With the rise of Mettaton, Papina became really into cosplay. Mettaton became her idol, and perhaps Papy formed the tiniest crush on the star.
One day, there was a massive raid from the PoS members. Several empty souled humans purposely fell down into the Underground with the purpose of eradicating everyone. They were stopped quickly though before they had a chance to properly storm the Fallin paths into Halloween towne, thanks to the royal guard and secretly Sanse. However, many were severely wounded in the process, and several were 'Falling Down'. It would be only a matter of time before Sanse finds out about Alphys' failed experiment that caused the Amalgamations.
On Papina's end, she saw how brave an selfless the guards acted. No civilians were hurt, only the guards. They were so cool! Papy made herself a cosplay of her own guard outfit. And after a party where someone told Paps that she should try out for it, she took that idea and ran with it! She took the potential to become a guardsman very seriously. She used actual armor for her outfit, while still keeping it fashionable. Papina goes to Undyne's house to volunteer to join the Underground guard. Undyne turns her down. He knows who Papina is. He knows how strong she is from watching her in Waterfall during his patrols. However, he also has close ties with Sanse through their respective jobs, and Sanse would end him if he let Papina join. However, after a full night of Papina guarding Undyne's house and still having the energy to excitedly greet him as if she too had a full night's rest, Undyne decided to "train" Papy.
For the most part, they attained normalcy. Hopefully, everything will remain peaceful. But that simply isn't the case, not when Frisk enters the Underground.
Hallowstale Asriel/Flowey/Goddess of Hyperdeath
Flowey: Howdy Frisk! Time to play a new game for once! It's called 'Don't kill'. Good luck! You're gonna need it. Especially when we tell EVERYONE what you did.
GoH: Every time you die, they will forget you little by little. I will erase your horrid existence from their memories!
Asriel: I can see now that you aren't Frisk. I do apologize. I hope, mysterious soul, you can forgive me. And Frisk, if you are listening from within, and IF you gain access to the reset button again, which I highly doubt, please don't undo this happy ending.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wingate Dingo Gaster has always wished to be normal. Her mother died giving birth to her, making her the only female in a now family of four; she was the only monster-human in the family, and she was the smartest. One brother was a brainless jock. Another brother frequently hung around gangs. Her father was neglectful to her and her two elder brothers. And while the boys fought for their father's attention and love, Gaster never did. She stuck to her studies and scientific curiosities. Her brothers would pick on her for her fascinations and make all sorts of misogynistic remarks. She had to learn how to do things for herself, like cooking, going to school on her own, steal her dad's credit card to buy cloths and school supplies, etc. She also developed a cleaning habit due to the extremely messy house.
At the age of 8 she became fascinated with souls, how they shape a person, the intricacies, and how they differentiate between humans, monsters, monster-humans, and soul mages. She made predictions on her family's souls and jot it all down in her journals. Her brothers would trash her things, ruining her hard observed research. That didn't deter her, for she learned to always have a backup in case of instances like these. However, it was always upsetting to watch hard work be so easily destroyed, and then having to rewrite everything in a new backup from the backup.
At the age of 9, the dad was arrested for illegal drug usage, neglect, and child abuse. The children were all submitted into the foster system. At the age of 10, Gaster was adopted by a family that lived in a small community village. They noted how special she was and doted her with praise. But she never wanted such praise. She only wished to be normal. That only became harder when she moved away from her home, and into the community village. While she wasn't picked on or bullied, it was hard for her to make new friends, as she couldn't connect with any of the kids due to the walls she put up to prevent potential future bullying and lower levels of empathy. She became self-conscious of every minute thing that was pointed out about her. Her genius-ness, her skeleton monster form, her maturity at a young age, etc., all things pointed out as unique that Wingate hated about herself because it meant that she was not normal. But that would change with a set of new friends.
The family she lived with now sat beside two other houses, with very rambunctious children. One day, on a summer morning, while Wingate was reading a book in the front yard, she noticed it got very quite. She had gotten used the the loud children, that she was able to block out their noise and read. Now that they had gone silent, Gaster found she couldn't focus. When she looked up, Wingate was startled to see two goat heads poking up from the top of the fence. The two introduced themselves as Torel and Asgore. Gaster tried to shoo them away, but they decidedly sat in Gaster's front lawn a couple feet away from Gaster herself. Gaster tried to ignore them, thinking they would go away, but Torel asked if Gaster could read to them from her book. Gaster said they wouldn't understand half of the words in it, but Torel challenged that notion. Gaster became curious at the challenge laid out, and accepted it. While neither could fully understand what Gaster was reading, Torel would pipe up from time to time to ask questions. Gaster would answer swiftly and kept reading. Asgore then had an idea. They should all study their souls. They each took turns as Gaster Pointed little nuances in their souls. After some time, Gaster proposed an activity: stargazing. They laid there for hours, watching the stars, until their parents called to each of them for bed. The three agreed to meet up again the next day. For Gaster, it was why. Why go out of their way to try and befriend her? She knew what they were doing when Torel challenged her, but she let them because she was curios how long they would keep up the "act". She didn't expect them to actually enjoy her company, and expected them to stop trying when her interests popped up. That was when they revealed that she was just like them- different, unique. Torel explained about his hunches, and Asgore explained her ability to tell someone's emotional state or their true desires, not to mention her rare three soul trait. With that Gaster found her friends, two little wierdos who were just as unique as her. From that moment forward, they became the three amigos. They always made time for each other and keep each other in a healthy-ish lifestyle.
When Gaster was 12, 7 mages made their home in the community village. Gaster didn't care too much about the group as a whole. What Gaster did find intriguing, is the fact that it's a group of 7 soul mages, each with a different soul type. Gaster became curious, as always, and observed the group, and that was when she started noticing things. They had a mob mentality and hierarchy. Sol, the determination soul mage, was the leader; anything he said goes and the others either agreed or held their true opinions to themselves. Derrin, the justice soul mage, was Sol's right hand and enforcer; he tends to dictate who joins their inner circles. Following up in their hierarchy is Tamila, bravery, their keen eye and muscle, and Alex, patience, their brains. At the bottom of their hierarchy are Chloe (Kindness), Pier (Integrity), and Mags (Perseverance); the three that don't seem to gel with the rest and maybe follow along due to peer pressure, or something else entirely. Gaster also noticed that Sol has a bit of a disdain for monsters and monster-humans. He was charismatic enough to not outwardly direct that disdain towards them, especially if they approached him first, but certain things he said, and the way he acted afterwards made his disdain clear.
Over the years, Gaster noticed more odd behaviors from them. For one, each soul mage took up one very important leadership position in the community. Sol became mayor, Derrin became head judge, Tamila became head of the sheriffs department and local security manager, Chloe became head chairwoman of the Ebott Meadow school system, Pier became the main founder for the fine arts department and entertainment and distributor of information, Mags became chief engineer and real estate manager, and Alex became the deputy mayor. And that's not mentioning how they all funded a church for their religious organization, the Purity of Soul. Gaster didn't care for religion, but from how Asgore and Torel described it, it could prove dangerous if not dealt with. But what could they do when the 7 soul mages now are the most powerful people in their community village, and the powerful people in Ebott city being too "busy" to do anything about it.
When Gaster turned 16, she finished high school, and went on to attend college in Ebott City, which was only a hour long bus ride. It was also at this time that her parent were planning on moving elsewhere, due to the rise in popularity of the PoS, a group that hates monsters and monster-humans alike. Gaster, despite knowing the danger she could put herself in by staying, she also didn't want to leave her two closest friends behind to deal with this themselves. Luckily, Asgore had just bought a house, and Torel also moved in to help pay rent. Gaster begged her parents if she could move in with her best friends. After some discussion, and numerus talks with the chaotic duo, Gaster's parents signed a custody form for Gaster to live with Asgore and Torel, and they are her legal responsibility until Gaster turns 18. Her two best friends got her into Rune University, one of the most prestigious schools in the country, for her to get her doctorate for Soul Science. She would also work as an intern at the Soul Research Science Division in Ebott city, coming home at extremely late nights and falling asleep on the couch.
It was on a night exactly like that when the monster massacred occurred. Gaster didn't hear the alarmed shouts of other people outside, or the shouting of her friends and house mates, until she was violently yanked off the couch and dragged outside by Asgore. It was then she saw the situation at hand, burned down buildings, bodies and dust in the streets, people actively being killed. As Asgore and Torel went on the defensive by guiding survivors to safety, Gaster went on the offensive. Gaster created diversions and slaughtered any offender she could see out of sight of those she cared for most. A couple times she tried to kill one of the soul mages, but they were too well coordinated; Gaster couldn't land any significant blow to any of them. But they got a blow off her. Derrin managed to scar her right eye before Gaster had to retreat to the caves under Mt. Ebott.
While Asgore and Torel were labeled the unofficial leaders of the Underground, Gaster became the scientific advisor. While she did work heavily with the soul research department, she also made sure the other divisions ran smoothly, everything stays organized, and answer any questions along the way. She started a new journal, which she named Journal of Scientific Inquiries, where she would document life in the Underground, research, and code illegal experimentations, namely done to herself.
During an incident with Chara, Asriel, and a cursed mask, Gaster tried to make an artificial soul to save Asriel from their flowery state using the small piece of Chara's soul temporarily. However, two humans that had fallen down and been accepted in the Underground, who was actually a PoS worshippers, destroyed the rest of Chara's soul, destroyed the prototype artificial monster souls, and set fire to the lab, which contained the formal notes on the soul research, before dying by Gaster herself. And while Asgore and Torel would be more concerned for her safety and generally distraught over the loss of both children, Gaster would think that they were disappointed in her for failing to keep the two children safe.
Gaster would burry herself in her work. She went back to the ruins of the lab and got the souls of the two PoS members for research. She built a secret lab in the back of her house to store the souls and to test on them. She would start to detach from sentiment, becoming completely logically minded with barely any care for how she started treating other people. That is until she hurts Flowey as she demanded for answers. She self evaluated and realized how toxic her mindset was becoming and worked to changing it. However, that doesn't mean she would completely abandon that sentiment, as she would use it from time to time when experimenting. A rule she would always adhere to, never experiment on children, would be disregarded more and more often, especially when said children offered themself for the experiment in the first place. It started with Flowey when she offered to test reset abilities, and it would continue with two other children that Gaster comes into possession of.
Much later on in life, she would be coaxed to adopt Sanse and Papina, who had recently fallen into the Underground. While Papina would be easy to deal with, Sanse would be nothing but a source of contempt for her. They do work things out with each other eventually. One day, Sanse would offer themself for experimentation due to their unique soul type. And while Gaster tried to refuse, all it took was blackmailing to reveal Gaster's black soul -that she tried so hard to hide- to her best friends, Asgore and Torel, Gaster agreed. The experiment worked-ish, with a lot of errors, some resetting, the accidental discovery of DT poisoning, and Gaster infusing their soul into Sanse for stabilization, the experiment Sanse proposed was a success. Gaster hoped that would be the end of experimenting on her children, but Papina would change that. Papina would demand Gaster implant some determination into her, after reading the latest entry in Gaster's journal and seeing what has happened with Sanse and not wanting her sibling to suffer reset remembrance alone. Gaster would again refuse, but Papina would gradually wear Gaster down, tiring her out until Gaster agrees. Gaster would be much more precautious with Papina in experimenting. She would also use some of her soul as well to see if just a little of everything would have an effect, as a secret experiment.
Other than experimenting on children, her children, Gaster managed to heal and live happily with Sanse and Papina as a whole family. That happiness would soon abruptly come to an end, as another PoS memeber attack Gaster at work, sending both of them into the core and erased from existance and forgotten by everyone. Everyone, except the two children Gaster instilled a piece of her soul into.
From that point forward, Gaster would be stuck in the void. She would meet other Gasters, most of whom she doesn't talk to. The ones she does talk to, she tries to glean information from them in regards to their universe. When she isn't doing any of that, she watches Sanse and Papina grow up into capable young adults. And watches, helplessly, when Frisk falls down into the Underground and changes everyone's lives there.
And that is where Gaster's story ends for now.
Up next will be both Chara and Asriel.
