FICTOBER 2020 - Day 10

Prompt: “All I ever wanted.” Original Fiction Story: Forte Rating: G

“Why are we outside an elementary school?” asked Melodie, slightly annoyed.

“There’s someone I would like you to meet,” Dorothea replied. A good friend of mine. Priya!” Her face beamed as she watched a short, thin woman walk their direction. She gave the small woman a tight hug. “Priya, this is Melodie, a friend from work.”

Priya’s face went from delighted to star-struck, then finally to agitated as she started to pout. “Why’d you bring her here? To rub it in my face?”

“No,” Dorothea said, crossing her arms. "This is actually a lesson for Melodie.”

“Me?” Melodie said, shocked.”

“Priya, here, plays viola. She really wants to be in the Halfield Philharmonic.

“I tried out five times.” Priya sighed.

“I’m sorry you didn’t make it,” Melodie said with genuine sympathy. 

“Don’t be,” There was a small pause. “My father tells me to give it up. He doesn’t think I can do it. He has no faith in me.  I really want to prove him wrong. That’s all I ever wanted.” There was another small pause, then she smiled widely. “But I’ll make it one day. I know I will.”

“I’m sure Priya would love a spot anywhere on the philharmonic; even last chair,” said Dorothea, directing the last part at Melodie.

Melodie realized now why Dorothea brought her to meet Priya. She’d been complaining non stop about being last char that she never took the time to appreciate the fact that she made it into one of the toughest Orchestras in the country.
