no thoughts just a lot of feelings about Deacon teaching Buck to drive and other things when he’s sixteen.

he’d be so gentle (buck would get so frustrated) “it’s okay bean, take a deep breath, you can’t be a worse driver than Uncle Street. It’s impossible.”

when buck finally figures out how to parallel park (it was the last thing on his list) deacon’s practically cheering and kinda scoops him up in a big hug. “daddddd get off of meeee. we’re in public.” “sorry forgot you were too cool for your old man.”

this man would definitely buy buck his first car and buck would be obsessed.

he’d also beat annie to taking away buck’s keys after he’d sneak out “sorry kiddo, rules are rules”

he’d catch buck making out with someone in his car in their driveway and that’s how buck would come out and annie and deacon would be okay with it, as long as their son is happy.

Uncle Rocker would definitely buy evan cool led lights for the inside of his car because yes, buck is that guy

Deacon would go to check Buck’s oil, go to pop the hood, smell the scent of weed, find Buck’s weed, and it’s the end of buck. sorry buck. we’ll see you next year.

Uncle Street would teach him how to do burnouts and stuff.

“Dad, I’m in love. I love her.” “Evan, you’re only sixteen, you’re not in love with her.” “Ugh I knew you wouldn’t understand!” And he’s right, Deacon doesn’t understand because there’s no way in hell Abby Clarke is good enough for his little boy and she’s way too old for him.

Annie would kiss him on the cheek and Buck would pull a face, and squirm out of her hold. “Mommmmm.”

Buck gets the nickname buck because there’s three other Evan’s on the team and Coach says he’s as tough as a buck.

He’d throw a party and Deacon and Annie would just happen to go home early and catch him.

“Daddy,” Evan comes in sobbing. At fifteen years old, he’s all football and his friends, skipping homework and his classes, hanging up in that old treehouse. He’s all gangly limbs, and too long legs for his body. He’s growing pains, he’s “Dad, get of of me.” He’s all video games, and Tommy Rocker. And at fifteen, it’s been years since he called Deacon “Daddy.”

“Evan, Evan kiddo, what’s wrong?” Deacon exclaims, concerned, as his son throws himself into his arms for comfort in a way he hasn’t for years.

Between stuttering breaths, and sobs, Evan tells him everything and Deacon’s heart breaks for both his son, and a boy as close as. It seems like Val Rocker wasn’t done breaking Evan’s heart and this time, there was nothing Deacon or Rocker could do about it.

“Oh kiddo,” He whispers, pulling him closer. “It’s okay. It’ll be okay.”

“What if it’s not?” Evan sobs. “What if he hates me forever?”

And Deacon doesn’t have anything to say to that.

if yall haven't read it by now, go read @perfectlysunny02's "half grown" au! it's a 911 x swat crossover where deacon adopts baby buck and it's got me having thoughts of childhood best friends evan and tommy, so i'm gonna spill them here, call it "almost grown: the sequel" (heads up for val rocker hate):

tommy is donovan and val's kid, probably a year or two older than evan and his dad's double (bc ofc);

while still married to each other, val kept tommy away from the swat people and especially evan and deacon (for reasons sunny wrote and i love the juicy drama);

rocker ends up divorcing val because her comments get nastier and nastier and he gets the better end of the custody agreement;

tommy and evan grow closer as friends on a day where they're both at the swat hq and tommy gets evan talking a lot;

they grow up and grow closer, best friends, inseparable, despite val's comments and dislikes, rocker loves their friendship;

around 15 years old, their school friends start talking first kisses and evan has only kissed a girl in middle school, tommy hasn't kissed anyone so they get teased (not cruel);

while hanging out, evan brings up the kiss thing to tommy and suggests that they should kiss, they trust each other and it would just be for experience and shit, tommy agrees (tries to play it cool);

they kiss at the treehouse deacon built with rocker's help as well as the boys when it became very clear that evan loved climbing trees;

the kiss is soft, just their lips pressing but they go back for seconds, thirds, fourths, before they pull away;

evan's heart is pounding against his chest, not an unfamiliar sensation (taylor's kiss - yes i'm reusing names, it's symbolic - had felt the same) and he holds his breath as he looks at tommy;

tommy is looking everywhere in evan's face except his eyes, an unreadable expression in his face, not something evan is used to, he is used to tommy's smiles and laughs and yapping sessions, not silent and stone faced tommy;

"what did you think?" evan asks and is proud of his steady voice, there is a lot happening behind tommy's eyes, he may be trying to hide it but they've known each other for basically a decade and he wants to ask so many questions;

looking away, tommy shrugs "it was okay" his voice lackluster and evan nods through the feeling of his heart breaking in his chest "yeah, okay" "maybe we should keep it to ourselves" "yeah, okay" "i'm gonna go home" "hmm, see you tomorrow?" "yeah, okay"

what evan doesn't know is that tommy's heart had hammered against his chest at the feel of evan's lips, he doesn't know the feeling of rightness that filled him at the kiss;

what evan doesn't know is that, despite tommy's desire to kiss evan again, to kiss him always, his mother's voice screamed in his head, yelling, shouting, murmuring, whispering words full of hate, full of bigotry and ignorance and tommy didn't want that to happen to evan, didn't want him to feel like he was wrong, like he was broken;

what evan doesn't know is that tommy broke his own heart and what tommy doesn't know is that evan's heart broke with his.

this went on a lot harder that i was expecting...i don't think i'll write this for now unless it's like plot points like this and i'll bow to sunny's masterpiece that you should read right now!

"It's okay, it's okay," he hears Tommy says above him, but Evan doesn't dare open his eyes. He doesn't know if he can. He's terrified. "Baby, it's okay. It's okay, I've got you. I got you, it's okay."

Maybe it's the pet name, maybe it's because he's scared and desperate for comfort, it's perhaps Tommy, his best friend, maybe because at the end of the day, he's just only fifteen, but Evan's unable to remain glue to the floor.

"Tommy," He sobs, and Tommy is pulling him up. "Oh my god-"

"It was just an earthquake, we're okay. We're okay. The tree house just shook a lot, that's all, it's okay. Our dads are probably about to come storming in here. It's okay."

"It's okay," Evan sniffles.

"It's okay," Tommy repeats, blue eyes trained on blue with no hints of dishonesty or weakness. "Promise."

"Parenting is so hard," Deacon groans, scrolling through all the school options that Annie sent him for where to send Evan. It seemed impossible to choose between what seemed like the seven thousand preschools in LA. "We have to pick schools? He’s only four, and Annie was preaching to me last night that where we put him determined his entire future. Like no pressure or anything. The whole thing seems ridiculous.” “I don’t know, man,” Rocker says, shrugging while downing his energy drink. “School’s important.” “Yeah, and so is your health. Those things are going to kill you.”

“I’ll take my chances. But Val was looking for schools before our Tommy was even born. Some were booked out years in advance. Waiting lists were long as hell, he’d have graduated high school before some of these were even up. Annie’s got the right idea. You need to move fast. Good schools fill up fast.” "Yeah," Hicks laughs, joining the conversation, as he comes into the breakroom. "Yeah, and if you're not super careful, you'll end up having to send them to school with some wackjobs. Once, a teacher told Molly that the earth was flat, and she was a science teacher. I don't think I had ever pulled Molly out of something so fast."

Tommy came home in tears. Val didn’t seem to mind that much but I was furious. I had him pulled out too, and my mom watched him until another place opened up.”

✨- Maybe it is time to tell the team. 

“No,” He chuckles softly. “No, I’m not leaving. So you guys know how me and Annie have been trying to get pregnant?”

“Oh my god, you and Annie are having a baby?” Tan exclaims, and Deacon hurries to correct him before cheers and celebrations start going around the room. 

“No. No not exactly, I… we- his name is Evan. We met him last week.”

“Wait,” Hondo says. “I don’t understand, his name is Evan?”

“Yeah, we’ve been having issues, so our doctor suggested something like fostering or adopting while we tried. We have all this love to give, and we have no one to give it to at the moment, so we went through with it. We wanted a baby, but we walked in,” Deacon grows quiet at the memory of seeing Evan for the first time, and he blinked rapidly. “He was by himself, he’s five, and he’s tiny, and he doesn’t speak, and I just… I just couldn’t leave him there. So, we put in the paperwork. He comes home next week.”

“Ah, so that’s why you’ve been skiving off of group hangouts,” Luca says, and Deacon suddenly knows it's going to be alright judging by the look on Luca's face. “You’re a dad now!”

“Yeah,” Deacon laughs, wetly, his hand coming up to dash at his eyes, and luckily no one says anything or laughs at him. “Yeah, I’m a dad now. His name is Evan. Congratulations team, it’s a boy. He’s 3 feet tall, and two inches, and he’s twenty pounds.”

✨- “Yeah buddy?” Deacon asks, looking down as Evan tugs on his jeans. “What’s up, kiddo?”

Evan points outside with a look that Deacon can’t quite identify. He’s getting better at reading Evan, he is, but they’re not quite there yet. The little boy is still quite an enigma to him.

“Sweetheart, we can’t go outside, it’s raining. We’ll get all wet.”

Deacon thinks that should be the last of that but Evan stubbornly points to outside again.

✨- Evan doesn’t speak, and Deacon doesn’t expect him too, but he does relax slightly at his words, and Deacon takes the win. 

“This is my wife, Annie,” Deacon continues quietly. “Is it okay with you if we sit with you? We just want to hang out a little.”

Evan ponders his question, and if Deacon isn’t mistaken, chews the inside of his cheek, something he had to pick up from another adult, before nodding.

Deacon sends him a small smile before he and Annie settle down beside the boy.
