One thing I really want to see explored more when it comes to Nightmare’s character is the fact that he doesn’t lie.

Nightmare “never lies, only hides the truth.”

Nightmare being manipulative, twisting people’s words and disguising meanings is much more interesting than him simply lying to someone’s face and giggling about it later…

The amount of intentionality and intellect that goes into twisting the truth is, in my opinion, infinitely more intimidating.

I adore the Dreamtale twins, I love their tragic nature. IT HURTS ME SO MUCH. And it always makes me happy to see works where they are happy or work together to heal.

I have no doubt that Past/Passive Nightmare LOVES AND LOVED his brother until the very end, he never resented Dream and always had the yearning to be as great as him. Nightmare did what he could when he had to, and if they met again you can bet he would want Dream to have the life he deserves; happy and filled with love.

"Never forget who I used to be!" Dream doesn't, but living with just the memory of his brother isn't enough, his life will forever be incomplete without his other half, no matter how much time passes or how much genuine affection he can find in the world.

If we look at Corrupted and Nightmare as the same subject, things maybe become a little more bittersweet. I've said it before but I like to think that the reason why Corrupted Nightmare can't kill Dream is because Passive Nightmare still lives deep inside that rotten shell. Passive and Corrupted have been together for so long that they've become one, their memories and feelings are too deeply rooted.

Likewise, Corrupted can only have small moments of kindness because of this same connection, because of this duality that exists within him.

If Passive were to break this curse, which in canon terms could be achieved with a part of Dream's soul (apparently, don't take this as something canon definitely) I think the poor guy would want nothing more than to live adventures with his brother as it was always supposed to be. And maybe start to make amends for all the pain he's caused, luckily, he can trust the most important person at his side to get through this together.

My favorite scenario is, though, Nightmare (Corrupted & Passive) making a truce and trying to build up his relationship with Dream again. Dream is happy to have his brother back, even if he is not like he used to be anymore, he still his brother no matter what, and Dream will always recieve him. Its a long way to walk on, but again, they are not alone! They have the time.

Over the hills – is a Dreamtale and Sonic crossover brough on by The Nine-tailed travel guide through the multiverse event conceived by Donelywell and mashed with my long time held dreamswap au idea of Dream taking Night and running away from the village after taking some drastic measures (the second chapter is being written baybey!!!!)

running from a Nightmare – another Dreamtale au, this time about corrupted Nightmare being set loose on the Sonic world by none other than Eggman and the suffering that comes with it (also fighting tooth and tail to get it written, you see a pattern here?)

the n 'n n's (read as m&m's) – unserious crossover where I put Nine Night and Nimona together and have them be silly (perhaps Nuzi will tag along some day too...)

Devious!Geno in a nutshell:

He's only half alive, technically

He was driven insane while being isolated in the save screen

Another outcode showed up, they fought, he killed them, and got the brilliant idea to start experimenting with souls

Outcodes that are more like Frisk or Chara? Not safe. They'll be massacred on sight

Eventually Geno gets free and starts an insanity fueled murder spree

He becomes such a big concern eventually that Dream tries to find and get rid of him

Dream can't find him. The bitch is hiding in the antivoid now, unaware that the longer he's there, the more it corrupts him

Geno eventually finds a Dreamtale AU and is the reason why the little itty bitty dreamtale brothers there are reduced to dust. That Dream dies because he was irritating and wouldn't cooperate, and that Nightmare died simply because Geno's "studies" backfired. Not like he actually cared about them in the first place, though

Geno is now such a big problem that OG Nightmare is also hunting him, right alongside Dream

Geno seeks refuge in the antivoid, expecting to be fine. He's used up all his safe time though and becomes warped, forcibly turning into a much worse version of Error than we're used to

Unlike OG Error, he retains his memories and wants to continue his highly concerning soul studies, with the goal of strengthening himself (via using other people's souls)

You know if you want to go the more canon route with Dreamtale and have Corrupted and Passive be two seperate people, and since Corrupted is born/created from the spirit of the dead human who attacked Nim and the negitive apples, Corrupted is technically Dream and Passive's younger (by 6 years) half sibling. As Dream and Passive were created by Nim with the apples.

Nightmare headcannons ✨

These are just headcannons I have for my favorite goopy boy. Some are from other people but a lot are from me.

(Trigger warnings- mentions of abuse, maybe body horror, animal death and eating, cannibalism, trauma, eating and sleeping disorders, self h@rm)

- Nightmare is FtM and uses he/it/king pronouns (I image he loves the idea of neos and xenopronouns to). He is a gay man, and is aro-specrum. To be more specific he is aro-specrum and cupioromantic, along with queer platonic. He is also ambiamorus.

- He is married to Cross, is dating Killer, and is in a QPR with all the Bad Guys+ Error, Lust, and Blue.

- Nightmare is generally very quiet and doesn't engage in conversion unless invited. He prefers to listen to others. His main love languages are quality time, physical touch, and giving gifts and acts of service. With the last two though, he doesn't like it when others give him gifts or do things for him. He likes to be the provider.

- Before his corruption he was pretty short (5'2) and is still short in his Passive form. After his corruption he grew to 7'6. He can change his height but prefers the height his goop makes him naturally. He has gotten very used to others being scared of how tall he is and doesn't care very much anymore.

- Because of his corruption, he is kinda uncanny. Certain features about him aren't normal looking. He has really long fingers that end in extremely sharp claws. His bones kinda clash together, an example is his ribs, which are melted together kinda, so he doesn't actually have individual ribs. His eye is also slanted and looks exactly animal-like. He has sharp teeth, and has rows and rows of smaller sharp teeth that go down his throat. He also purrs and growls like an animal. In all he looks less skeleton-like the longer you look at him.

- Nightmare use to be very abusive to the Bad Guys. After years of being a complete ass, he began to recognize his behavior and turned it around. He is now past his abuse and has made up to them all. He still has a lot of guilt from it, but knows he is better now. He started changing his behavior before Cross joined, so Cross beaver really got the bad part of Nightmare's behavior.

- Nightmare is made of two beings. There is the host body/soul which is Nightmare. And then the goop. The goop is an older creature that had followed Nim when she first came to the Undertale Multiverse. The goop and Nightmare live together as one, and can't separate without both dying. The goop can retreat back inside Nightmare though which makes him become passive. Nightmare has named the good Corrupt. Corrupt is a hive mind though, and is just the whole 'hive' acting together. Each of Nightmare's tentacles are part of this 'hive'. Each tentacle is named. They are named Jupiter, Venus, Orion, and Reginald.

- Nightmare is kinda animalistic. Thai is mostly because of Corrupt though. Nightmare purrs and growls, along with other noises like squeaks and chirps. He also makes nests sometimes. Nightmare also can ( and craves) meat. Usually he gets this from small animals like mice, rats, and bird which he can eat in one bite. But he has been know to eat just about anything fleshy. This includes dead deer, dogs, rotten meat, and sometimes human or other monsters. He still acts very proper though even as he eats a half rotten deer.

- The only reason he has eaten human or monster is to help Horror. Horror, like the rest of his au, had become addicted to the taste of humans and monsters. He hates the fact he craves is and Nightmare is trying to get him off it. But because it is such a strong addiction, he has to do it slowly. Sometimes, to help the process along, he will tell Horror he is feeding him human, while feeding his something like pork. The actual human meat Nightmare has eaten himself.

- Nightmare sucks at understand most social norms. After Dreamtale and Dream being trapped in stone, Nightmare pretty much locked himself away for over 20 years. During those 20 years he forgot how to be a normal person. It isn't uncommon to find Nightmare walking around the castle in little to no clothes, or have him walk in while one of the others are changing and just sit down and start talking. He doesn't care about norms very much either, so as long as the others are comfortable, he will do just about anything he wants.

- Nightmare has a lot of mental health and physical health problems. He has insomnia and hates sleeping also because of past trauma. He has a purging disorder, which is not binging but still forcing yourself to throw up. Nightmare is trying to get better about both of these things and is slowly making progress. He also has seasonal depression, C-PTSD, anger issues, and self harm tendencies. He is slowly getting better though.

- Nightmare loves gardening, and has a giant garden filled with flowers. He loves his roses though, which he takes great care of. He has an area of flowers dedicated to certain events, and will plant a flower if something good happens. He also plays the piano and has an old one in his study. His study is what he calls his library, which takes up an entire tower in the castle.

- Nightmare is very protective of the Bad Guys and considers them first before anything else. If he had to choose between them and the whole multiverse, he would let the multiverse die and teleport them all to a different Multiverse. He loves them dearly.

like i dont have a fav specifically, its more like which one has the most tragic stuff too occur to them and how badly are their canon endings. like stuff that just my roman empire.

dreamtale is an example. canonically, passive nightmares dead and corrupted nightmare is just some basic parasite going around ruining things pretending to be him without dream know his real twins dead. and theirs only 3 canon endings and the GOOD ending hasn't been revealed. either dream dies and corruption wins, he kills the corruption take the black apple and sacrifices his own soul to plant it along side it and dies but also RESETS THE UNIVERSE AND IT TURNS INTO A FOREVER LOOP OF SUFFERING, or kills the corruption and becomes a true guardian (and most likely gets his human form) but never gets his brother back. not to mention he canonically has ptsd from the apple incident, was abused by the village and used as free labor by them and is basically the definition of the song The cardigans- step on me (A true people pleaser) AND CAN'T EVEN HAVE FRIENDS OUT OF FEAR THAT THEY ONLY LIKE HIM BECAUSE OF HIS AURA AND HE CAN'T TELL IF THEY LIKE HIM FOR WHO HE IS WHO JUST BECAUSE OF HIS AURA.

Dream and passive have suffered so much and we wont even get to see either of them ever happy or healed from their trauma. nim (their mom) never gave two craps about them and planned the whole dang thing cuz she thinks all mortals are selfish and hates them all. she knew what would happen to passive, SHE LIVED IN THE FREAKING TREE AND SAW ALL THOSE PEOPLE TELL PASSIVE TO GO OFF HIMSELF AND THAT HE SUCKS AND DID NOTHING!!! We wont even get to know passive nightmare because Joku has said that he dead forever and shes never bringing him back like NOOOOO.

the whole thing is just tragic and i wish they could just have a happy ending. the worst part is that realized that passive died in front of the tree surrounded by the people who hated him all alone, and the most ironic thing is the fact that often children often have tree stumps as gravestones to symbolize a life cut short, and passive died in front of the tree and later the corruption ripped it in half to destroy it leaving... just a stump. I doubt joku made it intentional but that fact has been keeping me up at night

YWA! Oh dreamtale is a super cool like... concept! Like eh its not an undertale au pER-SE but thanks to nim it kinda became one, or something like that. But goddam I am not even half way done to investigating about dreamtale as the story is just... too much. Like the emotions tree was "accompanied" by the life and death one, and the magic one, with different guardians in each one. and that they were kinda the source of all the multiverses and universes and stuff. Like the emo-tree gave emotions to all living creatures in every multiverse (like OUTSIDE undertale and stuff) and same with the other trees I think (might be wrong) and then Nim then fused hers with ut (because she heard a voice that told her to do so, cuz like the worlds where the trees are, are not connected to any other ) and that's why its named "dreamtale".

And that very complicated world building with lore COMBINED with dream and nightmares' separate lore makes my head hurt. But as you said the uh, very complex doomed siblings relationship between dream and "not his brother" nightmare. and the fact that most likely they will never get to Meet each other ever again is very very very GOOD... VERY VERY VVVEERRY cool. and sad, cuz they deserve happy.

Ok so, I have another AU idea that I may or may not persue 

Imagine the bad guys but in og Dreamtale

NM accidentally falls asleep while reading and Dream is in the village doing labour for the residents so no one notices when this little skeleton kid creeps up to the tree and starts counting the beetles on it, Nightmare wakes up and is- understandably- a little freaked out and demands to know Killer’s intentions. Killer points out the beetles like it’s the most obvious answer ever and Nightmare just stares at him until they begin to talk and eventually Killer declares himself as Nightmare’s friend- so yay! Nightmare now has his first ever friend!

One day, Killer drags over a kid and his brother who are starving and injured and asks Nightmare to help them- Nightmare manages to heal them and Dream comes back, sees their condition and sneakily steals some food from the villagers (he is not a perfect angel). The kids talk after this and now Nightmare has another person (aside from Dream) willing to die for him.

Killer one day, along with Horror- drags up a kid who is very vocally NOT HAPPY with Killer and Nightmare is a bit scared of this kid who seems to be pretty angry and violent. Killer says that since Nightmare knows half of the gang he has to know the other half. Nightmare is a bit confused because there is not half of other people which Killer is dragging with him and asks about it. Killer says that the other member isn't allowed to come at the moment and Nightmare is introduced to Dust who is startlingly apathetic towards him.

It's been a few weeks since Nightmare's met Killer at this point and he isn't surprised to see Killer dragging up another kid at this point. This one seems to be very hesitant and talking to Killer about 'getting in trouble' or something. Dream is also here and he greets the two with Nightmare following after him. Cross is way too uptight with the twins even as they insist that (s)he doesn't need to use formalities. XGaster in this AU has drilled it into Cross's head that (s)he needs to treat the guardians with utmost respect. This eventually makes their meetings very awkward and Killer tells Cross to 'calm the fuck down' to which both Dream and Nightmare blank because where are these kids learning swear words? (Ignoring blatant hypocrisy here).

One day Killer runs up to Nightmare with a wooden sword and the rest of the gang and before Nightmare can react- Killer shoves the sword into his hands and demands he spars with Killer to prove he is strong enough to be part of ‘the gang’.

Killer is fast and confident but Nightmare has years of experience with fighting from protecting the tree so he quickly knocks Killer flat on his (non existent) ass and Killer, obviously, is a little butthurt (lol) but quickly gets over it and basically adopts Nightmare into their group.

Killer extends the offer to Dream after he is beaten by him too but Dream refuses, saying that he doesn't have the time. No one takes this to heart and boom shakalaka now Nightmare has some besties lets fucking goooooo

In this au, Nightmare doesn't get completely corrupted as a result of the apples- instead he's stopped by Dream and the gang from consuming more than 4 apples considering the fastest time anyone's eaten an apple in is like 30 seconds meaning that he'd have to eat at the speed of light to devour that shit quick enough. This results in Nightmare staying Nightmare but because of the apples- he has a vengeful spirit following him around and having short bursts of possession. This causes an immense amount of stress and Nightmare begins to get chronic pain from the weight the excess of the apples has on his bones.

The story basically follows a group of kids who have intense issues and a taste for pranks. There is a lot of shenanigans and hijinks.

Tldr; Nightmare becomes friends with the gang in his own AU where they're all children. they manage to stop him from eating all the apples and it follows their tomfoolery in the universe.

Has a fair bit of energy, but also enjoys the chance to just relax and rest.

Very imaginative and loves trying to get the Twilights to play with them, granted it usually ends with snuggling down together and listening as the other reads aloud.

While not the fondest of being climbed on without getting permission, if his owner has a little one he’s fond of, he will let them ride around on his back until they get too big.

He enjoys laying in the shade of a tree during the day with a book in hand and his family is allowed to rest their head on his side.

While often quiet, he loves to learn of stars and talk to his owner about them

Very good with healing and wrapping injuries, prefers to help with any injuries he can.

Nightfall

Not fond of children trying to climb on him unless they’re part of his owner’s family. Even then he does need to warm up to them to guarantee that they won’t try to pull on his tentacles or tail.

A bit of a bookworm, but will patrol the area around his home as he feels a need to protect and keep his family safe.

Does well with other bitties, mainly the ‘Bad Sans’ types, but will do his best to protect any bitty, and surprisingly any child that he may find that is being mistreated.

Fun facts about (corrupted)Nightmare and Killer in E.L.A

• despite not having a healthy relationship, Nightmare did try to be a good husband to Killer. He failed miserably.

• Killer is the one who is brave enough to criticize Nightmare taste in fashion and hairstyle. She can't stand looking at him if his hair look like a bed hair.

• Nightmare, despite being a king and super rich, he doesn't enjoy luxury life. But Killer enjoys it- so Nightmare just give Killer money and jewelries.

• He says sorry through actions after he hurts Killer or the children. Killer doesn't appreciate it until Nightmare just give the children an actual allowance-

• They share the same bedroom but Nightmare started to sleep on his office since Killer have a breakdown after Angst death.

• Killer reminded Nightmare of his deceased wife back in Dreamtale.

• Nightmare like Killer long white hair because it reminds him of his deceased wife while Killer like Nightmare eyes because it reminds her of grass.

• Killer had to write a book about Merciless look nothing like Passivemare and looks just like her brother because Merciless got half of her family genetics.

• It took Nightmare 10 years to finish reading the book because he hates to read something that have Merciless in it.

• Nightmare do the talking for Killer. Surprisingly, everything he says will be correct. Killer just not good at communicating with people.

• Killer took care of the children when they are infant then leave it all to Nightmare when they are 3-4 years old cause Nightmare doesn't want Killer to get attached. Merciless is a special case tho-

• Nightmare is actually jealous of Merciless because Killer rather spend time with Merciless than him. WELL OF COURSE, THAT'S HER SON-

• Since Killer hates wearing revealing clothes, Nightmare always bought more comfortable clothes for Killer.

• Killer is actually not her real name, it's just a code name. Her real name is 'Amaris'. Only Nightmare know her name. Killer also know Nightmare name being 'Alphonse'

Dreamexile AU Concept

Lil context for the fellow germans between you who watched the masterpiece called Tubeclash back in the day when Youtube wasn't a trainwreck, I got the idea from the Intro and Outro songs of Season 3, Monster and Ghost. So that's basically half the plot. Because i like listening to music and daydreaming to it, often making little animatics in my head i know i won't be able to draw.

Anyway back to topic.

Dreamexile is another variant of Dreamtale. Everything goes as normal and when the twins are around 8 years old mentally (in my head they spawned when they were mentally and physically like 6) the apple incident goes as usual, however, this time Dream was able to react in time and was able to stop the corruption in Nightmare, banishing the corruption deep inside him and only leaving behind a broken eye socket dripping goop and a few tendrils on his back. Until they were 17 years old Dream managed to convince the villagers to let Nightmare stay, though at the age of 17 he gave in to peer pressure, with a heavy soul confronted Nightmare and in the end kicked him out of Dreamtale. Naturally Dream was celebrated as a hero, a big monument was built in his honor and he pretty much became the king of Dreamtale after that. Nightmare found himself in an Antivoid, one which he'd later lock himself in, and built his castle there. All he did was read, cry, sleep and think about why Dream did what he did, finding excuses for him etc. The proper story starts 350 years after the incident, when Dream meets a strange figure with a paintbrush and Nightmare finally decides to leave his self-proclaimed exile.

UnderRuin, a Dreamtale AU in which, Nightmare actually speaks up about his bullying. An au in which Dream and Nightmare try to escape the tree and its long spread roots tying their destiny right to it. Tying their destiny to disaster and pain.

The brothers decided to run away in the dead of night to escape the village and everything around it, even the tree, though, thinking they could potentially grow a new one in the wild woods nearby, in which they were hiding, they took as many apples as their arms could hold, only 10, five negative, five positive. Weeks and weeks passed of the brothers hiding as the villagers practically tore down the forest looking for them, and the brothers were low, if not out, of food. Taking a grave risk, the brothers ate the apples together, causing their half 'corrupted' forms now. Negativity spills from Nightmare like a disease, yet it is the glue that held him together. Positivity also spilt from Dream, burning hot energy pooling in certain areas to leave odd burns. Both had their respective energy rip out from their backs in a grotesque and painful show. Dream with one wing, Nightmare with one tentacle. The hurt and starving children have been lost in the woods ever since, unaware of how many days had passed. Unaware of how many years had passed.

How does Nootmare take a bath without washing off all of his goo?

His goop is his body, so the water and suds would probably be absorbed at best. Anything else in there is bound to be broken bone by now. So no, he can't wash away his goop by taking a bath.

Positivity is perhaps his most common and prevalent weakness, good hygiene won't really solve that. Though if you do come out fresh from a shower, your relief may annoy him.
