A Curlie’s Guide to Terminology part I.

Whether you’re just beginning to dive into the world of curly hair, curly hair products, natural hair care or starting your end to hair straightening, it can be hard to know where to start, where to end or even what us “curlies” are talking about! So The Jessicurl Team thought it might be nice to add some new terminology for you all to help you understand and embody your curly hair routines and practices that will give you confidence to #Remaincurly!

We’ll hit lit on the terminology with this post and go in order of how you would practice these techniques and use products in your hair routine, so lets start with in the shower/hair washing.

“Co-wash” - A conditioner or conditioner-like, cream based product to cleanse the hair, people use this method as a gentler alternative to shampooing. Jessicurl’s “Cream Cleanser” is a great in between product for people that need more moisture when washing their hair but still want something strong enough to clear product build up.

“Deep Conditioning”- A deep-conditioner is a leave-in conditioner that you can leave in your hair for 10 - 20 minutes. For more intense moisturizing, some people may choose to wear a plastic cap or a Jessicurl “Hair Therapy Wrap” because the added heat opens up the hair cuticle so it can absorb moisture better; others leave it on over-night.  If you are interested in trying a deep conditioner, Jessicurl’s “Deep Conditioning Treatment” is a great option, whether is it used weekly or daily.  For those wanting to amp up the moisture levels,  try a couple drops of one of our  "Oil Blend” , either by itself or in combination with your Deep Conditioning Treatment routine

“Leave-in Conditioner- “Leave-in conditioner is a hair care product that is applied after a person showers, and which is left in the hair until the next washing.” All three of our conditioners, “Aloeba Daily Confitioner” ,“Too-Shea” and “Deep Conditioning Treatment” can be used as a leave-in. If you hair needs moisturizing throughout the day, you can combine a small amount of a conditioner with your styling products, which helps to create curl definition and makes the application of the products a little easier.. Styling is a crucial time when dealing with curls, here’s some more terminology that will not only benefit to add to your curl routine but give you options for hair styles and curl pattern formation. 

“Scrunching”- Method of product application where you use your bare hands, a “Micro Fiber Scrunching Towel” or cotton cloth/shirt to cup parts of hair to squeeze out excess water & encourage curls formation. This method reduces the possibility of frizz.  Jessicurl recommends finger raking any combination of our products; “Too-Shea” or “The Deep Conditioning Treatment” as leave-ins, “Rockin’ Ringlets”, “Spiralicious Gel”, “Gelebration Spray”, “Confident Coils”, “Oil Blend” and “Stimulating Scalp Massage Oil” as stylers,on your hair while soaking wet hair then scrunch right before you’re ready to “plunk/Plop”, this helps to coat the strands in product but doesn’t disrupt curl pattern and actually works to enhance it, creating more defined curls.

 “Plunking” or “Plopping”- Hair drying method for curly hair.   This is another common technique used to help distribute hair product and dry hair without disrupting curl pattern or creating more frizz.  This technique will create an "accordion" effect encouraging your curls to form. Using a “Micro Fiber Plunk Towel” is recommended but a cotton cloth/T-shirt will also work to soak up moisture without creating frizz while your hair dries! If you have fine hair or looser waves, plopping can create lift at the roots, since your hair is drying on top of your head rather than being weighed down.

Step-By-Step Photo Instructions!

Another huge concept in the curly world is 2nd day hair and techniques around elongating the amount of time curls can last in-between wash days.

“second Day Hair”- The state of one's hair on the day after it is cleansed, conditioned and styled, this process is also known as “wash day”. For some, it is a less-than-desirable look, often referring to frizz, loss of definition, shine or overall shape and for others it’s the opposite. A lot of curlies depend on second day hair to maintain moisture, for their hair can’t handle getting wet, or being washed everyday. Tight curl patterns probably won’t need a curl re-freshing on day 2 but if they do they can create their own water based leave in conditioner concoction with any of our conditioners; “Too-Shea”, “The Deep Conditioning Treatment”, “Aloeba Daily Confitioner” or for looser curl patterns you can use our “Awe-Inspiraling Spray” to add moisture and re-fresh curls!

“Pineapple”- A technique to preserve curls for a positive second day hair experience. You gently gather the hair atop the crown with a hair tie, or scarf. This technique is usually executed using a silk head wrap or “Silk Pillow Case”. By loosely keeping curls on top of the head they are put back into the accordion pattern to preserve and enhance curl pattern and aren’t at risk of being slept on top of which leaves curls flat and frizzy
