The Transfer Seven (Rainbow High OCs) Bio 4: Pepper Zielinski
Tumblr media
COLOUR: Pepper green
YEAR: Second
GENDER: Neutrois
FOCUS: Culinary Arts
STYLE: Retro. Active. Vibrant.
QUOTE: “Let me cook.”
BIO: Growing up in a cramped Polish neighbourhood in New York gave Pepper a deep love and appreciation for home cooking, and watching prime time bake-off shows with their mother after school gave them the inspiration to take what they learned in the kitchen to new heights. Now as the top student of Rainbow High’s small-but-thriving culinary department (and top chef at Rainbow Union), Pepper’s out to prove once and for all that just like fashion, cuisine is an art form all its own, and what the eye sees is just as important as what the tongue tastes. From the perfectly swirled tye-dye frosting on their cupcakes to the subtle spice in every bite of their kielbasa-topped pizzas, no one can deny that Pepper is a true artist in the kitchen—not even Vera.
OTHER:
-They’re a good friend of Kia Hart, bonding over their work at Rainbow Union.
-Their roommate is Magnolia Todd, and naturally they’re quite protective of her.
-They’re sixteen years old and from Greenpoint (ha), Brooklyn, NY.
-Proud of their Polish heritage, they incorporate elements of traditional food into more modern/American dishes (e.g. smoked kielbasa instead of pepperoni as a pizza topping; chruscikis with doughnut frosting and sprinkles).
-Predictably, their favourite food is stuffed bell peppers, prepared the traditional Polish way.
-Their dream job is as a gourmet chef or food stylist.
-They prefer to wear long sleeves to hide their kitchen-related burn scars.
-Though quiet and introverted IRL, they have a very active social media presence, running a food blog where they share their recipes, as well as an Instagram where they post pics of their finished dishes and timelapses of their food styling work.
-Pepper’s personal style is a mix of streetwear and formal, with sporty jerseys over button-down blouses and neckties, and baggy vis-keiesque pants over formal shoes. Patterns on their clothes are all inspired by retro diner decor, and they’ll even accessorize with an apron or cute soda-jerk hat.
-Vera Rougely seems to think of them as her personal set caterer, but Pepper’s true reason for catering her sets is because they feel bad for all the actors and techies she works half to death.
-Renzo frequently invites them and Magnolia for video game hangouts (on the condition that Pepper brings snacks, of course).
-They believe that makeup has no gender, and they prefer sparse but edgy looks in terms of eyeshadow, eyeliner, and lipstick. No false lashes, hair extensions, or acrylic nails for them, though—those would get in the way of their cooking.

In early 1995, U.S. Maple was born out of the ashes of two groups at Chicago's Northern Illinois University. Lead singer Al Johnson and "high" guitarist Mark Shippy were in Shorty, while drummer Pat Samson and "low" guitarist Todd Rittman spent their time with the Mercury Players. After the breakup of the two bands, the members met to see how they could deconstruct rock, only to leave its most basic elements. Since their development, they have released three different albums. The band recorded their first single at Easley Recording Studios in Memphis, TN in September 1995. It included the song "When a Man Says Ow!," which would later reappear on their first full-length album, backed with a number called "Stuck." Doug Easley manned the production boards for the session. Chicago independent record label Skin Graft took notice of the band and signed them on in the fall of that year. Shortly afterwards, the label released the "Stuck" single. Later in the same year, U.S. Maple stepped into Solid Sound Studios at Hoffman Estates in Illinois. It was there that they recorded their first full-length album, Long Hair in Three Stages, with renowned indie producer Jim O'Rourke. The record was released in October 1995. Before the band would go into the studio to work on their follow-up, they recorded a new single, as well as a contribution for a tribute album. Released on the Sonic Bubblegum imprint in early 1996, the band tackled and disfigured the 1961 Dion & the Belmonts' hit "The Wanderer." It was backed by a new original entitled "Whoa Complains." Then, in May of that same year, they re-recorded the AC/DC song "Sin City" for a tribute album on Skin Graft. U.S. Maple appeared alongside other Chicago bands like Shellac and Big'n. In early 1997, the group stepped back into Solid Sound Studios once again with the help of O'Rourke. What resulted was Sang Phat Editor, released in June. The fall of 1998 was a time of change for U.S. Maple, as they left Skin Graft. The band needed more support from the label due to their extensive touring schedule. It was early in 1999 that the group signed to Drag City Records, another Chicago-based independent label. Their interest in Drag City was a result of their contact with some of its artists one of which included O'Rourke. In late January of '99, U.S. Maple returned to the studio. However, they were now recording in Brooklyn, NY at B.C. Studios, rather than Illinois' Solid Sound. Not only did the surroundings change, but the producers did, too. Michael Gira, former lead singer of the goth rock band the Swans, was in charge of the recording sessions. What resulted was their third full-length album, Talker, which was released the following year. Acre Thrills arrived in spring 2001. That summer, Samson left the group and was replaced by Adam Vida, who had also played with Drag City artists like Edith Frost

Served as a member of the Collective - basically was the "muscle" and the mess-cleaner. Shadows... but merfolk basically? He's a human descendant, though.
Tony uh — well. Tony likes loud girls who try and be aggressive. He thinks it’s adorable. There’s a bit of a complex there about being a protector, so it happens. But he also likes seeing a woman take care of herself. And — He likes the give and take of an argument.
Tony is a troll and loves trying to pick fights verbally

Tenaya Izu, giant dish towel / the Sidekick / pink ombré, 2018, Mercerized cotton thread bleached and dyed with hair dye, metal pole, meat hooks, chains, 29 x 54 x 2 inches
Ghost in the Ghost June 21 - July 21, 2019 Opening reception: Friday, June 21, 6-9pm Curator in Conversation with Anne Anlin Cheng: Saturday, June 22, noon - 1:30pm [Watch the conversation here]
[Buy Catalog ($20 + $5 S/H)] *SOLD OUT!*
[Images]
BROOKLYN, NY -- Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York is pleased to present Ghost in the Ghost, a group exhibition curated by Danielle Wu that brings together artists who engage with the strange and synthetic life of Asiatic “yellow” flesh: Charlotte Greene, Tenaya Izu, Candice Lin, Tiffany Jaeyeon Shin, Juana Valdes, and Elliott Jun Wright.
Featured artists confront the fraught history of how Asiatic femininity in the Western imagination has been repeatedly evoked through the perfected, manufactured, and assembled material, from anime (Charlotte Greene, Tenaya Izu) and porcelain (Candice Lin, Tiffany Jaeyeon Shin, Juana Valdes) to K-beauty products (Elliott Jun Wright). Anne Anlin Cheng describes this violent and deeply psychological process as “Ornamentalism,” or “the forging of the sense of personness through artificial and prosthetic extensions.” As Asiatic flesh continues to provide an ornamental, technological shell for the crisis of Euro-American personhood, Cheng asks, “What is inside the machine? The yellow woman: the ghost within the ghost.”[1]
Candice Lin uncovers correspondence between European merchants in the 18th century that described the impervious surface of Chinese porcelain as “a hard white body.” What unravels in her video projection is a perverse history of how objects within globalized trade began to supplant human flesh. Juana Valdes invites a re-examination of broad, uncomplicated terms such as “female sexual objectification” or Otherness. Valdes’s photographs of carefully arranged craft objects and housewares sourced from the 18th century China Trade explore the different materialities, textures, and affects of surfaces that reference Blackness and yellowness.
Given how the yellow woman has often been produced out of objectness, is retrieval or recovery futile, even as we dare to imagine it? Tiffany Jaeyeon Shin nurtures the wounds of fractured porcelain using milk, which contains casein proteins that act as a weakly biological bonding agent. Elliott Jun Wright assembles heavy signifiers such as face masks, dried anchovies, and jade; this ghostly assemblage troubles Orientalism as a framework by relinquishing the notion of cultural authenticity. Instead, these floating symbols activate what Cheng calls Ornamentalism as a tenacious theory of being. In their sculpture giant dish towel / the Sidekick / pink ombré (2018), Tenaya Izu crochets a Japanimated gaze that hangs from meat hooks; the precarious difference between meat and flesh, the consumer vs. the consumed, materializes an identity that is vulnerable and fungible. Charlotte Greene collages together found objects and images; manga competes with biological formations, inviting new racialized considerations to displaced images.
Through attending to the history of how objects have been used as humans and vice versa, Ghost in the Ghost invites us to reconsider the complacencies of posthumanism and cyborg feminism while still asking us to heed the very human stakes of artificial beings.
A catalogue featuring essays by Danielle Wu and Anne Anlin Cheng will accompany the exhibition.
Related programming: Curator in Conversation with Anne Anlin Cheng Saturday, June 22, noon - 1:30pm
Join us for a discussion between curator Danielle Wu and Anne Anlin Cheng on the vibrant and reverberating implications of Cheng’s recently published book, Ornamentalism. Focusing on the cultural and philosophic conflation between the "oriental" and the "ornamental," this study offers an original and sustained theory about Asiatic femininity in western culture. Drawing from and speaking to the multiple fields, from critical race theory to visual culture, Ornamentalism investigates what it is like to exist as a "person-thing" within the contradictions of American life.
Anne Anlin Cheng is a Professor of English and Director of American Studies at Princeton University. She is an interdisciplinary scholar who works at the intersection of aesthetics and politics, drawing from literary theory, critical race studies, film theory, feminist theory, and psychoanalysis. She works primarily with twentieth-century American literature and visual culture with special focus on Asian American and African American literatures. She is the author of The Melancholy of Race: Assimilation, Psychoanalysis, and Hidden Grief (Oxford University Press), a study of the notion of racial grief at the intersection of culture, history, and law. Her second book Second Skin: Josephine Baker and the Modern Surface (Oxford University Press), excavates the story of the unexpected intimacy between modern architectural theory and the invention of a modernist style and the conceptualization of black skin at the turn of the twentieth century. Ornamentalism (Oxford University Press) is her most recent book.
[1]Anne Anlin Cheng, Ornamentalism. (Oxford, England: Oxford University Press: 2018), 137.
Tiger Strikes Asteroid's 2019 Exhibition Program and Ghost in the Ghost are sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC).

These dogs are not displaying concerning behaviors in shelter, and the owner surrender profile (where available) is positive. Some dogs with Level 1 determinations may still have potential challenges, but these are challenges that the behavior team believe can be handled by the majority of adopters. The potential challenges could include no young children, prefers to be the only dog, no dog parks, no cats, kennel presence, basic manners, low level fear and mild anxiety. Level 2 Dogs with Level 2 determinations will be suitable for adopters with some previous dog experience. They will have displayed behavior in the shelter (or have owner reported behavior) that requires some training, or is simply not suitable for an adopter with minimal experience. Dogs with a Level 2 determination may have multiple potential challenges and these may be presenting at differing levels of intensity, so careful consideration of the behavior notes will be required for counselling. Potential challenges at Level 2 include no young children, single pet home, resource guarding, on-leash reactivity, mouthiness, fear with potential for escalation, impulse control/arousal, anxiety and separation anxiety. Level 3 Dogs with Level 3 determinations will need to go to homes with experienced adopters, and the ACC strongly suggest that the adopter have prior experience with the challenges described and/or an understanding of the challenge and how to manage it safely in a home environment. In many cases, a trainer will be needed to manage and work on the behaviors safely in a home environment. It is likely that every dog with a Level 3 determination will have a behavior modification or training plan available to them from the behavior department that will go home with the adopters and be made available to the New Hope Partners for their fosters and adopters. Some of the challenges seen at Level 3 are also seen at Level 1 and Level 2, but when seen alongside a Level 3 determination can be assumed to be more severe. The potential challenges for Level 3 determinations include adult only home (no children under the age of 13), single pet home, resource guarding, on-leash reactivity with potential for redirection, mouthiness with pressure, potential escalation to threatening behavior, impulse control, arousal, anxiety, separation anxiety, bite history (human), bite history (dog) and bite history (other). New Hope Rescue Only Dog is not publicly adoptable. Prospective fosters or adopters need to fill out applications with New Hope Partner Rescues to save this dog.
